Re:[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe--No, Montezuma Main Pool

2015-12-30 Thread Jay McGowan
Tried again for the grebe on the Main Pool this morning, again without
success. I did finally find a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE out on the far
side of the goose flock.

Yesterday picking Livia up from the Syracuse airport we found a well-marked
SNOWY OWL sitting on a snow pile north of the overflow parking lot.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe

2012-02-17 Thread Brad Walker
To elaborate more on the grebe's position: Tim and I were looking from the
Swan Pen at Stewart Park when I spotted the grebe this morning. From
Stewart Park, if you look to the northeast along the east shore, you'll see
a squat, yellow shed near a break in the trees where the road is visible.
The grebe was swimming around there looking back and forth. For the last
five minutes we were there, the grebe was swimming alongside a Red-throated
Loon for a great comparison.

Also present was a gorgeous adult male CANVASBACK, in the canal next to the
boathouse. I've never seen one so close.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at East Shore Park

2012-02-16 Thread Donna Scott
Thanks, Brad!

I arrived at E. Shore Park an hour after your posting and was able to see the
Western Grebe in the distance towards that bluish-gray piling with a light that
is north from the red lighthouse.
The W. Grebe was still close enough to see with just binocs. It stood up in the
water and flapped its wings, then a few minutes later, flew a bit towards
Stewart Park.

All the photos people have posted helped me to identify the bird.

I drove over to the park to get a different view, but did not see it again even
though I went from one end to the other. Maybe it went into the Inlet?

thanks again, it is a life bird for me!

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at East Shore Park

2012-02-16 Thread Meena Haribal
This repeated sighting of a single grebe vs. two grebes together makes me think
there are/were three birds on the lake.
But I must also say this, past Saturday I was sitting at Myers and watching
bird movements, some seemed very random, but I watched lots of Common
Mergansers head to south-end of the lake and they were flying quite high and
sometimes not visible without binoculars, but they seemed to be heading further
south than stopping at Myers. I saw several groups with total of more than 150
birds. My thought was the that the north end was getting frozen, so birds moved
to south end of the lake. It would take them an hour plus if they flew 30 to
40 miles an hour. So the grebes probably can also do this.
Yesterday afternoon I was home for an errand and I too heard a Bluebird singing
in the yard from top of a Norway maple!
Today at the bus stop near East Hill Plaza, I heard robin's chuck chucking, but
could not see any robins and then I realized a pair of starlings were engaged
in romantic moments and one of the starling was making that sound. That was
very cool!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe

2012-02-14 Thread Dave Nutter
A WESTERN GREBE was visible far to the northwest from Stewart Park until at least 10:30am. I wasn't sure if I could see a light loral spot. The flank seemed more uniformly gray than I recall from my previous closer sighting from the southwest corner of the lake, and the only whitish part may have been associated with the bird's leg. The black hind-neck stripe was plenty wide (like Gary's photo). The bill was long and dull yellowish. I don't know if this is a different bird than I saw before. Also present: COMMON LOON  - 1 far to northwestRED-THROATED LOON - 2 together middling far to northBALD EAGLE - 1 immature on log where cormorant often restsDOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT - on log only before eagle arrived; later off swimmingunidentified carcass floating belly-up south of piling cluster - possible Canada Goose - large webbed black feet in air; white bellly & undertail; gray breast; brown wing/side? ; black bill poking up out of waterI didn't pick out any unusual gulls or ducks.--Dave NutterOn Feb 14, 2012, at 08:51 AM, Brad Walker wrote:One of the Western Grebes is swimming and diving often between the red light house and the pilings, headed towards the east shore, seen from Stewart Park.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe - Cayuga Co.

2012-02-08 Thread Tom Johnson
Cayugabirders,
A few photos of the two Western Grebes that Jay and I saw this afternoon on
northern Cayuga Lake are here: http://www.flickr.com/bonxie88

Just to clarify the location of the grebes - they were associating with a
huge (>15,000) flock of Redhead, Canvasback, and other ducks at Twin Oaks
Marina/ Campground. The location is found at these coordinates:
42.872017,-76.70453. If you copy/ paste those into Google Maps, you can
visualize the spot. The grebes were mostly hanging out between the duck
flock and the shoreline.

Good birding!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe - Cayuga Co.

2012-02-08 Thread Dave Nutter
About 2:40pm I got a call from Jerry Lazarczyk saying he and Doug Beattie had
briefly seen a Western Grebe at 2pm near the red lighthouse close to a Horned
Grebe, but they were giving up on refinding it. I did it get a chance to look
thoroughly because I was working, but a brief limited scan from the taxi a half
hour later did not show me any grebes. I think it's inconclusive whether there
are 3 and our southern bird was playing its usual hide and seek or whether it
flew north and joined another bird for a total of 2.

Did anyone look for the grebe this morning? There are quite a few people from
other parts of the state and around here who would like to see it, so please
post if you do go look for it.

Thanks,
Chris Wood

RE:[cayugabirds-l] WESTERN GREBE

2012-01-10 Thread Chris Tessaglia-Hymes
Big thanks to Chris and Jessie (note, the "ie"...cold fingers slipped up on
my iPhone in my message below)! Also, thanks to Bob McGuire, Chris Wood, and
Dave Nutter for use of optics! Excellent find and it's about time this
showed up here again...it's on the Basin List, but I don't know when that
was.

Good luck and good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

The Western Grebe, first sighted by Chris Wood and Jesse Barry, is still
visible on Cayuga Lake from the Myers Point lighthouse in the Town of
Lansing. Moving North. Way out there.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at Chimney Bluffs, 4PM Wends.

2010-03-18 Thread david nicosia
All,

I am planning a trip up to Lake Ontario this Saturday with my wife.
I will be stopping by Chimney Bluffs in the hopes of seeing the Western
Grebe. I also heard that there are many other great spots up there for
other birds. Does anyone have any suggestions on locations
in that general area around lake ontario? Please email me at
daven1...@yahoo.com if you have any suggestions. The weather
is going to be awesome on Saturdayupper 60s and sun.

Thanks so much

Good birding to all!
Dave Nicosia

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe at Chimney Bluffs, 4PM Wends.

With beautiful calm, sunny weather I was able to find the
Western Grebe this afternoon, Wednesday, at 4 PM. It was straight out from the
parking area, swimming, snoozing and preening. Over about an hour it swam
leisurely
west until it was behind the bluff. I was able to pick it up again by scanning
from the State Park shore.

  I noticed a couple things;
it doesn't associate with the Red-necked Grebes at all. Once when crossing
paths with another Grebe it dove and swam underneath to avoid a close encounter.
Many times it looked like it had something trailing behind like a tail
extension, but was only dragging a leg. I've seen other birds stretch their
legs, but this guy seemed to do in constantly mostly the right leg. Sometimes
he would windmill his leg around the side of his body. I don't think anything
was wrong, maybe it just felt good. When past the bluff toward the State Park he
resumed actively feeding, diving about every 30 seconds and staying down about
20 seconds each time. He came up with a fish on very many of those dives. This
lasted about 1/2 hour. He then resumed swimming out to the northwest in a
straight line, but not diving anymore. He must have been full. When I left at 6
PM he was still visible in the scope.
