I would guess that this is being caused by your database drivers. You don't
mention what database you're using, but it's worth pointing out that there
are hotfixes available for database access if you're using CFMX 6.1:

Re: Can CF do this?

2004-01-19 Thread Matt Robertson
To add to the reasons given why this isn't particularly reliable, many ISPs now use rotating IPs during the same connection.  AOL is the most often cited offender, with oftentimes each page request in a single session coming from a different IP, but they by no means are the only ones doing it.

Then there's the dynamic IP I have on my home DSL connection, which are the rule if you are on SBC (although you can buy a static one).  That IP gets assigned every time I disconnect/reconnect.

Bummer, huh?

CGI.REMOTE_ADDRESS (I think - I'd have to look it up to be absolutely sure).

However, do not expect this to be 100% reliable.  The reported IP address
can be a proxy server's address, or may not be reported at all (depending on
the browser).

Not 100% reliably, as it's easy to spoof, but just check the CGI.remote_addr
for the user's IP.

Scenario 1

Error Executing Database Query.
Timed out trying to establish connection

Scenario 2

Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your

JRun closed connection.

I am using Sparkplug CMS and this is happening on the login page in a
very sporadic manner. I had HostMySite verify the DSN and they said it
was ok. He also did a stack trace and said it times out when trying to
establish a connection.

Anyone seen this issue??

Subject: Cached Query Help

CFMX 6.1 Cached Query Problem:
I have an XML file that I'm reading into a query object (to facilitate faster search) using the QueryNew(), QueryAddRow() and QuerySetCell() functions. Now, I need to hit this query often and I decided that caching it would be a good idea. Hence I did a query of query on it like so

Select * from
myQuery

where myQuery is generated from the XML file using the functions above. As can be seen, this was a self-defeating exercise, because even before control flowed to the cfquery tag, generating the "myQuery" query from the XML file would've already taken place. To get around the same, the first time I read the XML file into the query, I set a server variable with the LastDTModified of the XML file, and would compare the server variable and the current LastDTModified to effectively create 2 code blocks

Use cached query

Create cached query

Now the problem is, to use the cached query, I have to the same sql statement and tag signature. I tried this in the "Use Cached Query" block-

select * from myQuery

This actually worked! But without notice, every so often, it simply says "Query of queries error: No table myQuery found in Memory". I tried using cachedafter on both queries with the xml document's lastdtmodified to keep the queries same, but to no avail. The only way I've been able to make it run properly once it throws that error, was try flushing the cache more than once.
Any suggestions, ideas why this works but fails every so often.

RE: CFMX errors

2004-01-19 Thread Jeff Beer
Well, there's only one or two DB related errors for the past week in the
application.log, where the default-err.log file has 6 entries (like
before) in the last 20 minutes alone.  But, another server connecting to
the same DB, also running CFMX, is having no problems.

Odd..

You could put the top level and sub level headings in one table, but
for the current design your DB schema is fine.

What you should do is group your output:

  Heading

    Subheading

  Article

SOT: DB Design Question

2004-01-19 Thread Ben Densmore
I am building a few new tables to store some articles and notes on our
website. I want it structured so that it displays:

Top Level Header
 Sub Heading
  Title of Article

I built 3 separate tables:
One has just an ID and a Header field
The second has an ID and the Sub Heading
The third table has an ID, the Header Foreign Key and the SubHeading
Foreign key and then the title and where the file is stored.

The problem I'm having is when I do my query:

Select appNotesHeaders.*,AppHeadings.*,appNotes.*
from appNotesHeaders,AppHeadings,appNotes
where
AppNotes.HeaderFK = appNotesHeaders.appNotesHeadersID
And
AppNotes.HeadingFK = AppHeadings.App_Heading_ID

It displays my Headers and Sub Headings more than once if there is more
than one article in a given Header.

So right now I have a total of 3 Headers, I have multiple Sub Headings
that can be under one header and multiple titles under each heading.

So the output should look like:

 Application Notes
  General Application Notes
  Title 1
  Title 2
  Title 3

 Amplifier Application Notes
 Title 1
 Title 2
 Title 3

Articles
 Featured Articles
 Title 1
 Title 2
 Title 3

But right now I am getting:

Application Notes
 General Application Notes
 Title 1
Application Notes
 Title 2

Am I totally losing it and not designing the DB right? I have built way
more complex databases than this but yet I'm struggling to see my
mistake here.

Thanks,
Ben

Apologies if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find

My problem is that I need to convert a webpage, it's a coldfusion
generated stats page on a server, into an image (jpg, gif etc). This is so
that I can view the server status from my TV via tivo. I've managed to do
something crude using the cfx image tag but if I could capture the whole

Any thoughts ?

Personally I'd rather not see multiple inheritance in CFCs - it just
complicates things up to much in my opinion.

I personally would LOVE to be able to create packages with more complex
directory structures... but I'm not sure how you'd do it (I assume
you're
talking about "real" packages with package-level roles and such - not
just
accessing things relatively).  Still it would be nice - but I'd rather
CFCs
stay simpler than try to go "full-OO" on us.

CF's biggest strength has always been its ability to abstract complex
stuff.
CFCs (for the most part) continue nicely in that tradition. adding lots
of
other OO stuff could cause them to be become much less accessible.  Then
again, maybe not - but I think that care needs to be taken to keep them
as
simple as possible while keeping them useful for the vast majority of
application challenges.

I'm not sure what you mean by that last one?  Are you talking about
making
CFCs persistent in some way other than the shared scopes?

Add to that the ability to extend more than one component.

Built in ability to check where a CFC is being called from. i.e.
tagcontext.

Ability to have cfc in sub-directories under a package directory, so we
can organize cfc packages.

A easier way to initialize a cfc only once.

Cold Fusion Oracle DSNs

2004-01-19 Thread Ian Skinner
Can any of you very experienced Oracle types give me a quick overview of the many different ways to create an Oracle DSN?

As I understand it:

1) I can set up a ODBC driver through the MS ODBC manager, then set up a CF ODBC socket DSN.
	A) Oracle ODBC
	B) Microsoft Oracle ODBC

2) I can use the Oracle JDBC Thin Client and then set up a CF Other DSN.

3) Finally I can use the CF Oracle driver and set up a CF Oracle DSN.

Which one of these is best?  What might be the trade offs between one and the others?  This is just plain confusing.  Too many choices and not enough information on which choice may work best for me.

| Well, in my mind, you're not using inheritance correctly. The

| should be able to use the two objects in the following sentence:

| All that being said, you are correct that the parent class

RE: BlueDragon 6.1B2 issues

2004-01-19 Thread Vince Bonfanti
To get the number of active sessions in BlueDragon, use the following:

AppMgr=CreateObject("java","com.naryx.tagfusion.cfm.application.cfAPPLICATIO
N")>

Note that this gives the total number of sessions, and not the number of
sessions for a particular application (I'm not familiar with the CFMX
implementation, but the code snippet you gave implies that it's giving you
the number of sessions per application).

For the first one, if you remove the closing tag it will remove
the error (the closing tag is unnecessary; if you remove it your
code is still compatible with CF5/MX). This issue is documented in the
BlueDragon CFML Compatibility Guide:

"BlueDragon does not support closing tags for tags that do not
normally have a tag body. For this reason, BlueDragon does not support the
optional use of a closing when using METHOD='Get'. BlueDragon
does, however, support the use of a closing when using
METHOD='POST'."

For the second one, you're trying to create an instance of a class,
"coldfusion.runtime.SessionTracker" that is proprietary to CFMX and
therefore doesn't exist in BlueDragon. If you can tell me what you're trying
to accomplish, we'll see if we can figure out an equivalent way to do it in
BlueDragon.

Your example is a package. And your right about being stylistic, it just

Why would you want to exend a UDF CFC? I don't grok OOP very well
myself,
but it is my understanding you only use extends/inheritance when you
have a
"IS A" relationship. Obviously your CFC is just using the UDF CFC for

This is similar to another post today. It's not a good practice to "extend"
a component if you can't say that

[child class] is a [parent class]
car is a vehicle

What you should be using is composition (has-a relationship). To do this,
simply make some createObject() calls in the quasi-constructor area or in
your CFCs init() function.

I now see what your saying. However (and I guess this is just a stylistic
difference between you and I), it doesn't make sense in my mind to have a
factory object in a parent directory and then the objects that the factory
can create in children directories. Using your example, I'd do something
like

DAOFactory.cfc

and then in the same directory have CFCs for

Oracle.cfc
SQLServer.cfc
MySQL.cfc

Again, that's purely stylistic and I'm not saying in any way that you're
wrong for organizing your application the way you do. But that is just in
response to your DAO factory example. In general, I agree with wanting the
ability to use access="package" with CFCs in sub-directoriesa sometimes
very frustrating limitation for me.

OK, I see what you're saying. However that functionality, in my experience
at least, is not common enough to warrant an enhancement in the CFC
implementation itself. I would say that at least 97% of my CFCs (if not
higher) rely on the ability to create as many child objects as necessary.
Again, in no way am I saying that you're "wrong," but I just think that this
functionality *should* be left up to the developer.

Dave.

Well, in my mind, you're not using inheritance correctly. The "rule" I
strictly go by for using inheritance is that you should be able to use the
two objects in the following sentence:

[child class] is a [parent class]
car is a vehicle

In your case CFCmain is *not* a CFCdao. You should be using the notion of
"composition," which is to say that CFCmain *has* a CFCdao. To use
composition in your case, I'd probably just make a createObject() call
either in the quasi-constructor area or in my init() function (of which all
of my CFCs have) of the CFCmain class and pass in the name of the dsn to the
CFCdao's init() function.

All that being said, you are correct that the parent class does not have
access to THIS.dsn in the child class. The child class has access to the
paren't variables, but not the reverse (that I'm aware of).

Dave.

What I'm looking for is the ability to place a factory cfc in a folder
and have a sub-folder under that directory that has a dataobjects folder
that holds db specific CFCs. Now I want to be able to add
access="package" to the functions in the db CFC where they can't be
called by any other place but from the factory.cfc. I know it possible
to write code to enforce this, but I want a easy built in way to do so.

Right now AFAIK that functions with the access="package" attribute must
all be in the same directory. So the factory CFC would have to be in the
directory and not a directory above. I don't like this method because it
is unorganized.

> Not sure about what you mean here either. What's wrong with the

Code can be written to have a CFC initialize only once, but often times
it's a pain. I would like to see some built in way to initialize a
component only once.

RE: CFC problems - portability workaround

2004-01-19 Thread Dave Carabetta
>Add to that the ability to extend more than one component.

I disagree with this one (and don't think it's even possible anyway). The
ability to extend more than one class does not exist in JAVA either, and I
think it's a good thing. If you've ever worked with multiple inheritance, it
becomes very confusing very quickly. I love that JAVA got rid of it, however
they were also smart enough to give interfaces, which, in my mind is a huge
missing feature from the CFC implementation.

>Built in ability to check where a CFC is being called from. i.e.
>tagcontext.

OK. I personally don't have a need for that, but I could see where others
might (I think this just came up on the CFCDev mailing list as well).

>Ability to have cfc in sub-directories under a package directory, so we
>can organize cfc packages.

Am I misinterpreting what you're asking for? Are you suggesting that you
currently can't have com.foo.myCFCs or something? I'm able to put my CFCs in
sub-directories.

>A easier way to initialize a cfc only once.

Not sure about what you mean here either. What's wrong with the
createObject() function or cfobject tag?

Dave.

Persistent Login issue

2004-01-19 Thread Cutter (CF-Talk)
Ok, I'll try the question again...

I have a few different areas of my site that I only want registered
users to have access to.

1) I set up a session.allowed variable in my Application.cfm (defaulted
to 0) if the variable isn't already present. Code:

2) I set up switches in the necessary pages to show a login include if
the session.allowed var equalled 0. Code:

 What's Here?

3) I set up my check so that, if login was successful, the
session.allowed var is set to 1. Code:

After a user logs in I see, using debugging, that the var is now set to
1. But, when I go to another page (within the site), I see that the var
is reset to 0. This shouldn't happen as the code in the App only sets to
0 if the var doesn't exist in the first place (see item 1 above for
code). Anyone have any ideas?

RE: MX 6.1 Internationalization

2004-01-19 Thread Mike Townend
briefly looking at the zip file... my first thoughts are that the
Application.cfm file included in the root of that zip file is incorrect as
it looks to be the CFIDE Application.cfm file rather than what I would
assume to be a blank Application.cfm file

Try removing the Application.cfm file and see if that helps

I need to get up to speed on Internationalization in CF MX.  Went to

and downloaded the .zip file.  Instructions on that page say "When the
file decompresses, a folder named internationalization_example_pages is
created on your system", so I assumed that it's coded intelligently
enough to find what it needs Unzipped and put in a directory on my

Where am I supposed to put this unzipped directory so that it will
actually work?  Are there any other I18n guides for MX 6.1 out there?

As just an FYI, when calling methods inside a CFC, you should NOT use

this.METHOD()

instead, you should use

METHOD()

Why? When you use this.METHOD(), it acts as if you were calling the method
from the outside. That means you will be prevented from calling private
methods.

Open the C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\WEB-INF\web.xml . You can modify the extension

Java is a programing language. Not a 'live chat' application.

I usualy suggest a Java applet hooked into a IRC server at this point.

An example of a zipcode ending in a zero would be Boston, MA  02210.
When importing it into sql server it becomes 221.
I can try your suggestion of inserting them into a properly padded string,
but how would you determine which zips have leading or trailing zeros? There
are 43,000 records, which to confirm one at time would be a chore in and of
itself.

You are not losing the initial zeros. You can't be, because they
are not there. What you are storing is just simple numbers
without initial zeros, and you have set up a display filter (the
Access equivalent of an automagic NumberFormat()) to make it look
like they have initial zeros.

Add an extra field in the Access table and insert them as
properly padded strings in there. Then convert from there to MS
SQL Server.

As for the trailing zeros, do you have an example?

In a copy of your Access database run the following:

ALTER TABLE table ADD COLUMN zipstring char(5);

UPDATE TABLE table
SET zipstring = zipnumber;

UPDATE TABLE table
SET zipstring = '0' & zipstring
WHERE Len(zipstring) = 4;

UPDATE TABLE table
SET zipstring = '0' & zipstring
WHERE Len(zipstring) = 4;

UPDATE TABLE table
SET zipstring = '0' & zipstring
WHERE Len(zipstring) = 4;

UPDATE TABLE table
SET zipstring = '0' & zipstring
WHERE Len(zipstring) = 4;

Then try importing the table with the new zipstring field in MS
SQL Server.

Cf template gives 404

2004-01-19 Thread Hugo Ahlenius
[I'll resend this, in case it got stuck in the server problems at
hof...]

Hi,

I have mystical problem, to amuse you on a Friday afternoon.

After upgrading from CF4.51 to CFMX there is one template that returns a
404. This is Solaris machine, running CFMX and Apache.

* It seems to be Apache returing the error, not CFMX
* If I rename the template, it works
* If I move the template to a different directory, it works
* If I rename the directory, it works
* Moving Application.cfm away doesn't change anything.
* It doesn't matter what is in the template (the code)
* A directory with the same name works at other places in the
file-system
* I can't find anything in the Apache docs that indicate that we are
using any reserved words

The template is called sendpass.cfm and is under a folder called
"administration" (it is used to send out the password to users that have
forgotten it).

Any clues/suggestions are welcome!!!

/Hugo

Is this your biggest concern - doing an accurate "Who's On" list?

I'm not certain you can use CF to get any kind of an active-session list for
a given application, so you'll need to maintain the list yourself anyway.

How you manage that list needn't be related to your login-session managment.
You'll need to maintain this list in a persistent data store such as CF's
application scope, or in a database.  You keep the list current by adding new
users to the list when they enter the room, then you keep updating their
"last visited" date/time whenever they retrieve a page.  Drop users from the
list by setting some timeout value of 'X' minutes and deleting those that
have expired.  This timeout value needn't be related in any way to the
timeout of the user's login session.  You could, for instance, have a session
timeout of one hour, but could use a "Who's On" timeout of 10 minutes.  Keep
in mind, though, that with a very short who's on timeout, you might see what
looks like odd user behavior.  Most likely it will look like you have users
who come in and leave and keep coming back again and again during what is
actually a single visit.

Doing this would most likely have exactly the opposite desired effect.
Someone goes to your chatroom page, and this bit of code keeps refreshing the
page and keeping the user's session alive indefinitely.  With absolutely no
interaction on their part.  They cold have left the computer and gone on
vacation for all you know, but they'll appear to remain logged in.  Same
thing if they (like I do) have 20 browser windows open, forget about the chat
window, and go off and visit another site in a different browser window, or
start doing something else on the computer for a few hours.

If you have very short session timeouts (15 or 20 minutes qualifies), then
it's going to be an inconvenience for shoppers unless you keep their shopping
carts intact between sessions.  Someone puts a dozen items in a shopping
cart, gets a phone call, their session times out, and now they have to start
shopping again - or not.  An inconvenience for them, but ultimately the
seller's loss.

With reasonable timeouts, a single application is probably best.  Probably
easier for you to keep track of when coding and easier for your users.  It's
annoying to be forced to login repeately on different areas of the same web
site.

Cfc inheritance and best practices

2004-01-19 Thread Hugo Ahlenius
Hi,

I'm a fairly new to CFCs (which seems cool). I have a little issue:

I have two CFCs, let's call them CFCmain and CFCdao. CFCmain extends
CFCdao, the former supplies the main interfaces, while the latter
provides the data access (SQL) functions.

I designed these to be unaware of any shared scopes. I set the dsn to
use using a property on CFCmain (it sets a default value when first
instatiated).

But, the property value on CFCmain (THIS.dsn), is not accessible at all
to CFCdao -- right? And there is no way to have this property on CFCdao,
and it is then inherited to CFCmain (since you are not allowed to use
the this scope on a "base" object, right?).

This means, in practice -- that the dsn string needs to be passed to any
of my CFCdao functions (where the dsn is needed).

Please let me know if my logic is correct, and if there is any
preferred/alternative way to design this!

Thanks,

Hugo

Apologies if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find
anything in the archives.

My problem is that I need to convert a webpage, it's a coldfusion
generated stats page on a server, into an image (jpg, gif etc). This is so
that I can view the server status from my TV via tivo. I've managed to do
something crude using the cfx image tag but if I could capture the whole
page and convert the html to an image I would be really happy.

  Any thoughts ?

  Cheers

txt file which lines don't have the same length

2004-01-19 Thread Nicolas CHALLEL
Hi,

How can I make a request by using a txt file which lines don't have the same length ?
This txt file is generated by a compiled program that make lines of this type with ";" as delimeter.

example lines...

date;code;lib;value1;value2;value3;Name;First name;value;
13/01/2004 11:36;345;London;0025;0415;0012;SMITH;Deborah;0085;
13/01/2004 11:36;202;Paris;0144;0002;0711;CLIFTON;Jack;0055;COLLINS;Jenifer;0033;
13/01/2004 11:36;711;TOKYO;0125;0075;0102;PAUL;Sean;0077;BOSTON;Mickael;0114;CHRIS;Helen;0072;

On line #2 you read Clifton and Collins attached to {13/01/2004 11:36;202;Paris;0144;0002;0711;}
but on line#3 there are Paul,Boston and Chris attached to {13/01/2004 11:36;202;Paris;0144;0002;0711;} and I can't duplicate my columns' name
I just can have one Name column, one Surname column and one value Column and yet, this txt files contains 2 or 3 or 4 persons for one record...

I've tried to use

Error processing CFFILE Error attempting to read 'C:\Documents and Settings\myName\R54T01.txt.'
and I typed this code :

#file.message#

the option box CFFILE is properly ticked in the CF administrator settings... but I can't read anything and I need to create a requested table no matter how many people by line

Can someone help me ?
