 All,

I'm going to be working on a dynamic PDF File generator. Has anyone on the
list had any experience with generating dynamic PDF files based on some
user
variables? Based on some user input I need to fill in the blanks in a PDF
document and present this to the user.

 Sincerely,

I've never tried this, but have you thought about making it possible for
the
client to download RTF versions of said content? If you search Google, I
think you'll come up with some templates for RTF documents. I was
researching this once, but the project never went through so I didn't
actually get a chance to try it.

If you control your own server, I believe there are also components you
can
install/call that allow you to write directly to Word or Excel and create
 fully formatted documents.

I believe somebody else on the list can pop up with information on how to
do
 a dynamic PDF document.

The other thing I would suggest is try to educate your clients when you
first sign them. Try to access their expectations and then educate them
on
what realistic expectations they should have. I've found this works best.

Anyway, I am *not* advocating that you go and try to find CF sites to hack
into or break. I *am* advocating that you take the time to send an email
to
sites that you find that are broken. The majority of them won't bother to
do anything, but you still know you did your best to make the 'net one
step
safer for other surfers. And you might get someone like me on the other

Or POST the packet using a form with a hidden input field where the
action page is where you want to go. The header can handle a lot more
info that the URL string. I've forgotten exactly how much (1024 k?) but
unless your struct has tons o' keys you should be fine.

A simple solution to this URL truncation problem may be to create a
table in your database to use a storage repository for the WDDX packet,
insert the WDDX packet into the db, and then just pass a UUID through
the URL variable, retrieve the wddx packet from the db, and then
 recreate your structure.

 cflocation url=sometemplate.cfm?packet=#urlencodedformat(packet)#

 Second template

 cfwddx action=WDDX2CFML input=#url.packet# output=myStruct

myStruct now exists in second template. Again be careful if this is
complex or it may get truncated by browser

You can only pass simple data as a url parameter not complex such
 as
structs. You could serialize the struct with wddx and then pass
 the
resultant string but you would quite likely exceed the character
 limits
  on
   a
url if you had a complex struct. You might consider storing the
 struct
  in
   a
session var or storing the serialized struct as a client variable.

Re: Cf code with ActivePDf

2001-08-01 Thread Steve Aylor

Ok ... so then you are able to fill in and open your pdf form with your cf
query data but you just cant get this toolkit method for formatting
[Tlkt.SetDBMultiRowSeparator] to work with CF?

I may be misinterpretting what your doing - but I dont beleive the ActivePDf
com object is intuitive enuff to fill in your form correctly with your db
data just because the pdf form's field names coincide with with the names of
your columns in the database.

As I recall from memory and how the Adobe Active X FDF Toolkit works, you
need to use a method for setting the values of the fields.

See anything in the active pdf docs like :

cfset ActivePdfMethodNameforSettingFieldValues = (PDFFormfieldname,
StudentPrint.LName[1])

All the best,

Steve

I found some archives that said the best way to do this is to use acrobat

create the forms and a fdf file. Then use this fdf file as a template to
create on the fly with cf populated with the data you want to use. What
I'm
hoping is that somebody has some sample code (would make a good custom tag

OK - different subject, so I'm following with a different email:

Let me point out a very good reason NOT to use CF for XML. When you get
XML, you have to compare it to your DTD and then parse it to get the data
out. I'm not sure about you, but writing a parser as complex as this in
CF
doesn't sit very high on the list of things I want to do.

On the other hand, there are plenty of Java (and other languages) XML
parsers out there. The apache organization maintains a very nice one
called
"xerces" which is seeing a lot of use. I think Sun may also distribute
their own version of an XML parser.

So, short summary - there are no existing CF parsers for XML (that I know
of...if I'm wrong, someone please correct me). Handling XML is pretty
process intensive, and lets be honest, thats not really CF's strong point.

SQL Server Processor Licensing Clarification

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/productinfo/multiplexing.htm

With the recent introduction of Processor Licensing for the Microsoft® .NET
Enterprise Servers, some independent software vendors (ISVs) have raised
questions as to the proper way to license SQL Server when using it as part
of the ISV's software application. This has particularly been an issue for
vendors of system management tools and their customers, who have requested a
more simplified licensing solution tailored for their specific needs.
Microsoft SQL Server and System Management Tools
As is true for all Microsoft products, SQL Server use is defined in the
End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA) that accompanies all editions of SQL
Server 2000 (or any previous version). There are two ways to license SQL
Server 2000:
Processor License
Server and Client Access Licenses (CALs)
The Server and CAL model is described in the EULA as follows: "SQL Server
2000 Client Access License ('CAL') Requirements. CALs that you acquire may
only be used in conjunction with your Server Software. You must acquire a
separate CAL for each device that.accesses or otherwise utilizes the
services of the Server Software."
Additionally, there is specific language that attempts to clarify the use of
applications that are installed between the end user and the SQL Server:
"'Multiplexing.' Hardware or software that reduces the number of Devices
directly accessing or using the Server Software does not reduce the number
of required CALs. The number you need is based on the number of distinct
inputs to the hardware or software 'front end.'"
Despite this language, our ISV partners have been unclear as to exactly how
many CALs are needed when using system management tools from vendors such as
Computer Associates, BMC, NetIQ, Intel, HP (OpenView) and Microsoft (Systems
Management Server).
Recommended Procedure-Processor License
Microsoft has implemented a processor-based licensing model to address the
special needs of the ISV community and to simplify the licensing model.
Under this new model, a customer acquires a Processor License for each
processor running their server software.
A Processor License includes access for an unlimited number of devices to
connect from either inside the corporate LAN or WAN or outside the firewall.
Customers do not need to purchase additional Server licenses or CALs. The
Processor License is all they need.
Based on a review of system management tool vendors and their products,
Microsoft will communicate that the appropriate licensing method for these
vendors is Processor Licensing.
All system management tool vendors should communicate to their customers,
field account managers, inside sales departments, and resellers that the
appropriate licensing method for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 when used in
conjunction with their product is Processor Licensing. Microsoft will be
communicating the same message to their field account managers and resellers
as well.

Subject: OT : embedding a PDF

This is a bit off topic but I was thinking about this earlier today and
I was curious if anyone else has experimented.

What I would like to do is be able to embed an acrobat document into a
web page. I don't mean that I want to use frames and just load a PDF
into a full frame. Instead I would like to be able to embed the acrobat
activeX control or Plugin into a web page, something like how I can
embed a flash move as a portion of a web page.

Right now I'm experimenting with IE. I found the ClassID in the registry
for both the OCX and the Acrobat EXE. Something like the following :

 object classid="clsid:CA8A9780-280D-11CF-A24D-44455354"
 width="300" height="300"
 param name=movie value="someNiceDocument.pdf"
 /object

So far I haven't gotten this to work. I think I'm going to go through
the Acrobat developers guide that details the API, but haven't had a
 chance yet.

Anyone have any experience or ever tried this before ?

and 4.5 supports SLDAP for security.

Larry Meadors [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wednesday, May 31, 2000
We've used NDS for NT and basic authentication. That works pretty well
because the NDS users get replicated as NT users. Easy to set up too.

With CF 4.5's enhancements to cfheader, you can really use any data
source to do basic authentication. We're also looking into using
Novell's ODBC driver for NDS and there's also an ActiveX control that
might work. Note: ODBC and ActiveX are not supported with CF by Novell
(translation: "If it works, great, but if it doesn't, tough.").

There are also some JAVA classes from Novell that are supposed to work
with the NDS. You might be able to use them (potentially from a cfx) to
 create other authentication schemes.

 Fun fun fun!

 John,

We are building shipping tables for one of our national distributor's
sites,
but some smaller retailers don't want to spend the money to build those
tables into their sites. I've looked at AbleCommerce but didn't notice
the
Able Shipper tag. I'll check it out.thanks.

  Laura,

Since UPS only changes their rates once per year, you could always
 implement
a "local" rate lookup on your own rate data. Our Able Commerce
 storefronts
use a tag they created called Able Shipper. It consults rate charts on
 our
own web server and avoids the UPS site bottleneck. I don't know if they
make this tag available as a stand-alone, but they might
  (www.ablecommerce.com).

  Shane,

We initially thought it was general internet traffic too, but this
occured
more than 50% of the time over a 2 week period and not always at peak
internet times. That's when we contacted UPS. They now have these
extensive "on-line" tools based on java, etc., that are just too time
consuming to implement -- but, hey, they're free :)

We're now trying to steer our customers to a standard shipping price as
opposed to individually calculating shipping per order. Not all are
happy
with this, tho', so we are searching for alternatives.

Well, it was a good run, but I guess this pretty much wraps it for Cold

now they can get something much better for about the same amount of money.

Oh well, nothing lasts forever. Time to move on.

Apple Drops WebObjects License Price From $50,000
to $699
New Version to be Entirely Java-Based
WWDC, SAN JOSE, California-May 15, 2000-Apple® today unveiled aggressive new
pricing for its industry-leading WebObjects® web application server
software, and also revealed that the next version of WebObjects will be
written entirely in Java. Starting today, customers can purchase a complete

using 100 percent pure Java technology. WebObjects 5 for Java will enable
Internet developers using Java to quickly build complex solutions which can
be deployed on virtually any server. WebObjects 5 for Java also will support
a wealth of Internet standards including Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) for
interoperability and JDBC for universal database connectivity.

"WebObjects is the premiere software for rapidly developing and deploying
web applications to millions of users worldwide," said Steve Jobs, Apple's
CEO. "With its new pricing and support for Java, WebObjects is now

WebObjects is an end-to-end application server with tools, technologies and
capabilities that make it an easy-to-use, standards-compliant solution. It
has an object-oriented architecture that promotes quick development of
reusable components. WebObjects provides scalability, load balancing and
fault-tolerant capabilities for multi-threaded applications running across
multiple CPUs that support high transaction volumes.

Apple is also offering new consulting services for customers who would like
to implement a customized web application developed in WebObjects as part of
its expanded professional services organization which delivers consulting,
integration and training services for WebObjects, QuickTimeT Streaming
Server and Mac® OS X. The expanded services organization, Apple iServices,
will provide professional services for Apple customers and developers in the
creative, education and business markets.

Re: reading out my xml packet

2000-05-17 Thread Steve Aylor

With 4.01 try htmlencodedformat or

cfwddx action="cfml2wddx" input="#UrlEncodedFormat(your2darray)#"
output="wddx_packet"

or after the db insert when pulling the packet out of the db

cfwddx action="wddx2cfml" input="#UrlEncodedFormat(wddx_packet)#"
output="YourVar"

or

cfwddx action="wddx2cfml" input="#HtmlEditformat(wddx_packet)#"
output="YourVar"

You'll probably need to play around with a few different combos to see which
will work.

Not sure of the sitch, but likely all the percent (%) signs are wreaking
havoc on allaires wddx parser.

Re: You have nice cookies .. mind if I have a look?

2000-05-16 Thread Steve Aylor

Like I said .. turning off cookies won't save you from someone getting to
the cookies you already have stored on your machine. Besides, the problem
ISN'T with cookies .. it's with crappy MS security .. supprise, supprise.
Notice how the only people affected by this at all are people using IE and
Windows ... quite the dynamic duo.

The problem has NEVER "really" been about cookies anyway. Its the
"PERCEPTION" of what site developers may or may not be storing in cookies
that is freakin out the surfers/users at large. And these whores in the
media are just trying to capitalize on this overblown issue as a way to pump
up the banner ad impressions and click thru's. The media should be roasting
the site developers that place sensitive info in cookies, and do a more
thurough job of discussing the real issues.

Hardly any "secure" sites are storing "sensitive" information in a cookie.
Decent security for web sites is based on both something you "have", and
something you "know" - not just a cookie's value - sensitive or
insensitive. If a web sites sole security mechanism is cfid cftoken - Id
have to say then its flawed and needs to be fixed - the solution isnt to
eradicate cookies - fix the security model. If someone can buy stuff from
Amazon.com based solely on the value they store in my cookie - then I'd have
to say that Amazon.com's "Patented 1 - Click" checkout horse pucky is
severely flawed - as well as MS's IE. Maybe Amazon should have spent the $$$
on security experts vs. patent attorneys..

Netscape doesn't have this problem and
neither do any other operating systems. I say don't worry about it and
use
your cookies .. just, now we have to take on the added responsibility of
designing our sites to provide Microsoft's cookie security for them. Now
..
anyone have any usefull ideas on how to do this?

Does the security breach discussed apply where the developer is setting
cookies to be seen only by webservers in the "domain" that set the cookie??
Isnt that a specific cookie setting "option"?

well... gotta go... .. got to go turn off Javascript in in many computers
now shesh

formatting if they desire, but I DO NOT want them to be able to submit
CFML,
since I have CFFILE and CFDIRECTORY enabled .. and so-on.

I have found several tags that remove HTML or HTML and CFML .. Is there a
 tag that only removes CFML?

Would there be any reason not to allow them to submit HTML as well? If
so,
is there a way to limit the HTML to only the basic formatting tags (font,

 br, etc.)?

Re: Email-to-Fax Services?

2000-05-08 Thread Steve Aylor

www.efax.com!!!

You can now send an email as a fax - like:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

word/pdf/txt/ whole list of other file types as allowable attachments or
juts plain text in the message body works fine too :-0

As long as the "from" address is a valid efax user - the fax gets sent...
$.10 a page though. You may be able to get a better deal for volume - i
dunno. The other email to fax server I liked was GFI Fax www.gfifax.com.
Protofax is another you may want to look into.

Subject: Email-to-Fax Services?

I just received a call from a client who is helping out a client of theirs
(I feel like the top of the food chain... or maybe the bottom). The third
party is a car rental service, and they have an "online order page" that
simply generates an email request. They'd like to move one step backward
in the world and have that email generate a fax as well. (I hate to enable
people who won't check their email regularly, but as long as I don't have
to deal with it, I'll do the research.)

We've set up a process to do exactly this for one of our partner companies
-- an online form gets routed to both an email address and, through
cf_fax, to a fax server. However, we've had some problems with this
process, mostly due to the fact that we can't afford to monitor the fax
server to detect its numerous failures.

I'm hoping to recommend a service to them. I'm pretty sure I've seen
services like this, but I was hoping for some feedback from others:

Has anyone used a service like this? Preferrably not one of the
free-fax-number services, but a company dedicated to providing
 high-quality email-to-fax service?

Are there any CF service providers out there who would offer something
like this as a customized service?

 TIA,

 Dave

Re: Cf Studio resources hog? anyone see this?

2000-04-18 Thread Steve Aylor

I agree, and have theorized the same on NT and 98. But, alas.. I was
presented with a tip just this afternoon for WIN98 usage that may
improve" -not fix - the sitch

start | Control Panel | System Icon | Performance Tab | File System tab |
Select Network Server from the drop down

and perform the glorious William Gates - salute - "reboot".

Supposedly the win98 default setting for this option (Desktop...) does not
handle memory mgmnt as well as the Network Server setting. Caveat emptor
and YMMV. I have instituted this change on my win98PC with no current
problems. However the change/benefit has been unoticeable so far - 2 hrs
worth of use.

All the best/HTH,

Steve

Does anyone else have this problem:

When I have CF Studio 4.5.1 running it seems to take over about 40% of my
 resources.
I run in the yellow / red (sometimes no color at all) with the MS resource
 meter most all the time.

Ok, I tend to keep lots of apps open I would be happy to be able to run:
 CF Studio
 MS Access
 FTP Access
 2 or three Netscape windows.
 Outlook
 AOL Instant Massager 4

I consider this minimum running set of apps.

I would be nice to also have these apps open too:
 SQL Manager
 winamp
 PCanywhere
 MS Query

It seems that when I open and close apps my memory (ram) becomes
fragmented.
So I just leave them open. (note: I am not saying this as a fact. Just a
 theory.)

Does anyone know of anything I can disable in CF studio that saves
resources? Or any tweaks that helps? Would Windows 2000 help?

 System:
 Pent III 500
128 Mb RAM (tried 256MB no change)
 Win 98

Re: Best DataBase software?

2000-04-13 Thread Steve Aylor

Sounds like a good question for the sql server lists: www.swynk.com

SQL7 and MSDE on the laptops might be workable. Im not familiar with 2 way
replication scheme's so the best place to ask would be sql7 list on
ww.swynk.com

hth,

Steve

Here is one for you all.

I am running a new site and the database is currently Access97. The
conditions any prospective database must meet are as follows.

 1) Fast (already 1/4 million records and growing fast, probably into the
 10's of millions)
 2) Replicable. Sales staff in the field (World Wide) need to enter
information into a copy of the database on their laptops then dial into
their regional office and synchronise their data with our master, this
must
be 2 way replication not just upload.
 3) Internet Replication is desirable so we can synchronise the data with
the
web server without needing to upload 50-200Mb files via FTP to synchronise
 20kb worth of changes.

The web server is a Dell, dual PIII 600, 256Mb Ram, 32Gb Raid5 HDD,
redundant PSU etc... so the server is fast, the current access based
system
runs queries in under 250ms. We are thinking of upgrading to MS SQL
Server,
but if there is a better option I want to know about it.

 Any suggestions?

Re: Text Editors vs Site Editors Version 2

2000-04-13 Thread Steve Aylor

I like to get my cf coding done FASTER by dragging and dropping cfml code
snips all over the place and then. I actually enter the outside world once
in a while (ya know... sunlight) grab the horse from out in th meadow,
hook ol bessie up to the carriage and take a buggy ride to the farmers
market... milk a cow by hand, slaughter a another one for some steaks and
while Im at it kill myself a chicken for some barbecue all the while
listening to my walkman.

Cuz ya know... that modernized store bought stuff and automobiles is for
damn sissies..

The difference in the homesite/studio "tool" is.. it doesnt do the coding
for you... it leverages the developers existing knowledge and lets them
speed up the doing of many of the "mundane-brainless" tasks requireing
excessive "typing".

I dont think studio has taught anyone how to properly use
session/application/server scoped variables and where to place them.. or
stored proc's or code cfml etc... - it just saves time. Period. Being able
to type real fast in Notepad or some other text editor doesnt make for a
smarter better developer than someone who is able to leverage the tools in
studio - its just makes them a better typist. Equating studio to cheating
yourself of the knowledge learned by notepad coding doesnt fly.

Well.. out a milk... gotta go...

steve

Here's the deal, i'm so used to the keyboard mentality, that i just want
to
 quick in and out...

I do use other tools, to help with the database stuff like SQL Navigator
3,
 Benthic's Golden32

I just like the olde KISS standard of not using tools that do or have more
 than I really need.

When I first got started in CF, Studio just took up more memory and time
to
learn, than just using a test editor to plug away and type and peck and
hack
 at the coding...

Now I'm not trying to say my approach is superior or meant for
everyone...But I have noticed a Conformist Attitude towards everyone
wanting
 to be a like

I really dont't care to do things the way everyone else does...

I like collecting little tools to do exactly and no more than what I need
them to do...I dislike the feeling that studio is to the coding, what
frontpage is to the web, a kludge application to help people do the code
for
 them...

I know that isn't true, but it feels like it...After having worked in Tech
Support, and so many people who use Front Page demanded results without
wanting to learn about how to get that results

This may be totally inaccurate as to why people use it...

CF Studio just feels like too much of a tool...I like simpler tools...

This isn't a competition, but I was majorly curious as to if I was alone
or
 not...in being a TextPad/ Text Editor user...

It looks like I am to some extant...and that's okay...

Are there any other tools people use other than studio for coding? like
SQL
 Helpers and so on?

Another trend I've noticed is that people who code like to listen to
winamp
or other music over the internet while working

 What do you do?

Re: Text Editors vs Site Editors

2000-04-12 Thread Steve Aylor

What amazes me is the number of people who consider themselves senior cold
fusion programmers, and have never used the query builder, or even know
about it. Apparently the little build button in the query tag edit has
 completely escaped their attention.

I would "NOT" call myself and "advanced" CF developer, however; the studio
query tool is good for about helping you remember the names of the tables
and columns of the db and thats about it - especially in sql server -
otherwise SQL7 EM / ER Studio or Visual Interdev (IMO) provide far superior
DB design and query tools. I like the ability in Visual Interdev for
example, to edit the table data when testing stuff. Typically anything that
studio's db toolset can do, can be coded by hand. Noticebly absent is gui
for stored proc's. Besides the missing functionality... its slow (on my
system.)

Now if we could drag and drop column and table names from the window on the
left (thats where I have it) into the cfml/html code on the right window
pane... then we'd have a productive db tool. (Hint Hint Hint)

I cannot imagine trying to code Cold Fusion apps using anything but CF
Studio. Kinda like trying to build a house without a hammer or nails.

As customizable a studio is for CF... its da bomb...

Re: CFX_FEDEX_RATE

2000-04-06 Thread Steve Aylor

With all the discussion of shop carts and cfx's etc... I thought I'd mention
this. I had lunch with one of the founders of goShip.com, and he told us
that they are very interested in working with developers to integrate their
service(s) into cf, asp, jsp etc. You might check them out. Plus they just
launched their web UI, these guys have been doing shipping software and
rates for quite a while.

Also, if anyone is interested, one of my client wrote a web based app (i
think its browser based. need to dbl chk) that tracks carriers on-time
delivery guarantee's. So if you do a bunch of small shipping, or a bunch of
shipping, it helps you track your refunds available from UPS, if they fail
to deliver on time. I thought that was pretty slick. especially since he
said the number of late shipments is near 25-30%.

FYI...

Steve

I have a CFX_FEDEX_RATE tag that rates shipments based on relevant
information; however, with FedEx a person actually has to certify their
apps, they cant just grab a cfx tag and deploy...

If you want more info on the tag, contact me off list.

 Hi all,
I've been approached by a colleague to look into speed test results for
the
following situation. I have been a member of this list for a long time now
and closely followed (and implemented) the suggestions for using the Len()
function as opposed to the CFIF myvariable IS "" method. However, is it
 quicker to use the following?

 CFIF Len(myvariable) IS 0

OK, I know the first reaction is "no way." At least, that's what mine was!
BUT, after thinking about it for a minute, i realized that the 0 is *not*
a
string (because I am not using quotes around it), and in machine code, the
number 0 is all zeros, which a computer processes the fastest of any
evaluation. Therefore, it would make sense to me that it is quicker for
the
machine to process the zeros rather than having to search the results of
"Len(myvariable)" for a 1, which would evaluate the statement to false. I
realize that this might seem *extremely* tedious, but it does make a
difference. If someone with the ability to do some load testing has a
second
to run a comparison and post your results, I would be forever grateful. I
am
always in search of ways to speed up my templates, no matter how miniscule
 the improvement is!

 Regards,
 Dave Carabetta.
