Re: Coldfusion hosting question.

2007-09-22 Thread Dave l
the headers shouldnt cause a slowdown and it may not say your website but it
still is probably on the same server and the point of doing the ping is to see
where it is slowing down between your computer and the server which doesn't
necessarily mean that it is either your computer or the server but many times
it is somewhere in between.

If you have a decent host you should be able to send them the ping trace and
they can tell you were the slow down is at.

It's common to use host headers with web servers in general, as it allows
you to map multiple names to a single IP address.

I don't see why they would.

RE: Coldfusion hosting question.

2007-09-21 Thread Scott Stewart
There's a lot that goes into it, that someone who's a network admin may be
able to explain better but

You may have a dedicated "virtual server" which uses something like VMWare
to create virtual boxes, isolated instances of the operating system, on the
same machine. Each network card can support up to 5 ip's and the physical
box can support up to 5 network cards (this is all according to Micro$oft,
Linux may be different.

There's a ceiling on how many virtual instances you can create based on the
amount of memory in the box. As this ceiling gets close performance can
degrade.

Hope this helps

Thanks.
Are these "USING HOST HEADERS" are common practice as a hosting company ?
My server is dedicated server...not shared hosting.
Are these host headers caused the slowness ?
If yes.. then...what should I complain to the hosting company ?
Thanks again for explaining to me.

Sounds like their using host headers, which would redirect to a directory
based on the domain passed in the host header. This allows for multiple
domains on the same IP

Re: CF Hosting Question... 25+ domains with one account.

2007-02-19 Thread James Holmes
I just signed on with Viviotech and everything works well. For a lot
of 3-5 page sites the smallest VPS will be fine, especially if you
choose Bluedragon instead of CFMX (the resource footprint is smaller
and it's cheaper). Vivio will do the DNS for you on their servers, so
you don't have to run you own nameservers. Each site can get its own
account on the box, with its own email etc. Finally, Jordan and the
others are very helpful on the forums and via email.

And no, I wasn't paid to post :-)

A dirty solution could be to use domain aliases, and then have your
index.cfm do a lookup on the domain from a db and point to a sub directory

I would still contact hostingatoz as I doubt the costs would be much (based
on past experiences with them). They seem to be very flexible.

Well - you need to have your own CF license (or Blue Dragon or another CFML
engine alternative) but CrystalTech still has the best prices I've seen for
dedicated servers: $50/month for Linux and $80/month for Windows.

I've used one of their cheapest windows servers for years and never had a
problem. You get a lot of softwarein the kit and can add dedicated IPs at 4
for $4/month.

Really a great deal considering some hosts are still charging $200 a month
for virtual servers.

RE: CF Hosting Question... 25+ domains with one account.

2007-02-19 Thread Ian Skinner
I just recently started using Godaddy for my personal website. You can have
unlimited domains and sub-domains, restricted only by your disk allocation and
bandwidth. You also get 1000 emails with a shared hosting account. I found
their administration tools to be fairly straight forward and self-service, if a
bit slow.

If you check these and the Adobe forum's archives you will see quite a few
complaints about Godaddy's CF technical support. I have only had to use it
once to date. The first level support was clueless concerning my issue of
creating a custom DSN pointing to a non-Godaddy database server. But after a
few moments of confirmation that he did not have the answers to my questions -
I asked for the next level and was immediately put through. This support
person was knowledgeable and was able to converse with me and explain why
Godaddy does not do this with their shared hosting accounts.

Of course they would be happy to do it with a virtual dedicated server at ~$25
a month, but this was not important enough to me to compensate more then
doubling my monthly expenses for this account.

---

Hmmm. I'll have to check them out. Thanks, Adrian.

If you dont need to use createobject() / any other shared hosting banned stuff,
then I would guess that godaddy are very hard to beat on pricing.

Che,

I should have mentioned:

1)
I've not tried the godaddy hosting myself, so I dont know what the catch is
(there always is one, isnt there)

2)
Make sure you read the T&C's
http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/legal_agreements/show_doc.asp?pageid=HOSTING%5
FSA
Especially the bit about website content.

If you dont need to use createobject() / any other shared hosting banned
stuff, then I would guess that godaddy are very hard to beat on pricing.

Seems like you can have unlimited websites / 1000 GB transfer a month for
about $9 USD a month (incl CF)

I can do that ..   i dont charge extra per domain.;

my cost factors are disk space and bandwidth everything else is
unlimited (meaning have as many as you need, fitting inside the bandwidth
and disk space limits).

I recently purchased 25 related domains and I wish to create 25 simple 3-5
page CF web sites. Can anyone recommend a host that can do this with ONE
ColdFusion account that doesn't cost a fortune?

Aside from a SQL database, I don't need anything fancy since the sites will
basically be monetized/affiliate pages. Also, I have no preference with
regards to Linux/Windows.

Some cable companies block port 80, so you may have to use another. Is
this just for testing or are you going to run an actual site? If they
see a lot of traffic, they may get suspicious

RE: Hosting Question --- sorry should have put the (OT) in the or iginal post

2003-02-11 Thread seth.turetsky
Some cable companies block port 80, so you may have to use another. Is this just for
testing or are you going to run an actual site? If they see a lot of traffic, they
may get suspicious

RE: Hosting Question

2003-02-11 Thread Robert Bailey
Yeah, I had nothing but problems with them. I had my credit card stolen so I
cancelled it, it was the one that I used to pay for hosting, and tried for 3
weeks via email and phone to give them my new number, as they were emailing
me telling me that they can not bill it, and NEVER got it fixed, so they
cancelled my account and I went somewhere else. Always had problems logging
in to the FTP, my mail server went down too many times. I went to
http://www.experthost.com/, for MX hosting, and have had nothing but GREAT
things to say about them, they are responsive and never had any problems.
www.hostmysite.com is also a great host as well.

I don't think you're going to see much, if any, improvement if you're
using Access as it is pretty much the weakest link in the chain. In
reality, you should set the concurrent connection limit to Access at
5 or less, and if the data is important to you, then you should set
it to a single concurrent connection to assure the db doesn't get
fried if there is even a "chance" that 2 people could be updating the
same record at the same time.

For a cost effective solution to start, I'd suggest simply using MSDE
on a single server. I ran that setup for awhile with a substantial
amount of traffic to about 5 SQL databases and didn't have any
problems. With the money you'll save initially, I'd suggest putting
AT LEAST a gig of RAM on the server and as much CPU power as
possible. You can upsize the Access dbs at your leisure and by then
you'll know if you need to migrate your new SQL databases to a
dedicated SQL server.

RE: Access/SQL/hosting question

2001-04-24 Thread DeVoil, Nick

Vernon,

That is too much traffic to expect Access to handle.

IMO you will possibbly get more performance improvement from
going to SQL Server than going to a dedicated server.

The amount of Access database activity done by other users
on the server you're using shouldn't affect you that badly.

The dedicated DB server sounds like overkill.

I'd appreciate any and all advice and comments on the following situation.

I work for a non-profit membership association (translation, not a huge
budget, but web stuff is getting to an important means of communication
with the membership.) We've been running our web site on a shared server
set up, but for a variety of reasons are pretty sure that we want to move
to a dedicated server.

Currently we are serving 20-40,000 pages on a good day, around half involve
database queries, and there are a couple of hundred credit card
transactions per day also. Most of our traffic is concentrated during
standard business hours.

So, here is the question, one consultant has recommended that we not only
move to a dedicated server, but also upsize the databases to SQL, and get a
dedicated database server as well. This seems like a fairly drastic leap,
and I'm wondering if our relatively low volume really demands this? I know
Access gets a lot of flack, but is it reasonable to expect it to perform
better on a dedicated server?

Any recommendations for what the most cost effective solution for us would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Vernon Horn

Vernon,

I would suggest trying out the dedicated machine prior to jumping into SQL
Server unless you can get a good deal on a server package. It sounds like
you understand your needs. There are also a few tweaks that you can do with
access database to improve performance. You won't see SQL Server numbers
though. I am curious, how many database hits per second are you seeing on
average throughout the day? This would probably be a good indicator as to
how much headroom if any you have left in your access database.(I am
assuming you can get this data from CFSTAT, bet I am wrong) One last thing,
I don't know that you can necessarily assume you will see better Db
performance on a dedicated server; you don't really know how many database
hits other users on that server are making. Your provider might give you
some numbers.

Any recommendations for what the most cost effective solution for us would
be greatly appreciated.

Access/SQL/hosting question

2001-04-23 Thread Vernon Horn

Thanks in advance,
Vernon Horn

Amazing. I now count 20 solicitations to the list in less than 3 months.

Please don't consider this a flame, as I just don't like to do that.
But I was asked by a potential client the other day to give some CF
hosting recommendations and I purposely left atswebnet off the list
for this very reason (I told him I couldn't host him because he
doesn't have a development environment and I don't allow development
on my server). I'll bet I'm not the only one that leaves atswebnet
off their list. :)

I host CF also and I also have a killer shopping cart, but when there
is a request for recommendations, if it looks like I may be able to
fill the person's needs, I mail them off list and tell them what I
have to offer. Because I know that if I post "Check out cf_ezcart"
and "Check out twcreations" every 3-4 days, pretty soon I'll be
blackballed. LOL

You should at least include "I may be biased because I own (or work
for) the company" instead of making it look like you're just a
satisfied customer.

Again, please don't take this as a flame, just as some friendly advice.

Same experience. I even went out and bought my own server so I
wouldn't have to keep moving my ColdFusion customer's sites from host
to host. After going back and forth with them for months and them
always saying there servers performed wonderfully, and that the
problem was on my end (and I presume all of my customers ends also
that were calling at midnight wondering why their site wouldn't
load), they at least admitted there was a problem.

My suggestion to them was to stop offering CF sites at 5.00 per month
with unlimited traffic and unlimited datasources and limit the number
of CF sites to 50-75 per box.

I have a hard time swallowing that there are only 40-50 CF "users"
per box. Heck, I had 12 on a single 105.00 per month account (50.00
for base account and 5.00 per additional domain). But, I was probably
considered 1 user (with 12 ColdFusion domains). So at those numbers,
that's like 600 CF sites per box. LOL

Anyway, I had the same issues with folks questioning my programming.
Now I have about 25 CF sites and 90+ static sites on my server, with
a meager 512 Kbps connection, and everyone is extremely pleased with
the performance.

Agreed. I know a few people who have had relatively positive experiences
with Intermedia. They just aren't me. :) I hosted with Intermedia for
about 6 or 8 months, with varying # of domains throughout, and one of my
clients had some serious issues with the fact that it took so long to log
into the site, and kept raising questions about my coding (he was NOT a
technical person) and if it was "the way you programmed the site" making it
so slow. I ended up moving the site because he was so unhappy with it.

RE: Hosting Question???

2000-11-07 Thread Steve Pierce

Remember Motor Trend magazine picked the Chevy Vega as car of the year in
1972. Today the Chevy Vega routinely is in the top 10 of the worst cars in
history. I watched a movie reviewer for a local television station say that
Star Wars was one of the worst movies of the year. They later fired him for
being an idiot. I read a review of Word Processors and it listed Mass-11 as
the best word processor ever beating out WordPerfect 4 and Word. Mass-11 for
the younger crowd is the worlds only word processor written in Fortran.

It often times gets down to the old school yard saying, "My dad can beat up
your dad." I wouldn't put much faith in these rankings. Asking people on
this list what are their experiences with hosting companies will probably
yield a better set of hosts that can meet your needs then looking at some
arbitrary ranking.

Fortunately there are many to choose from, pick one and if it doesn't work
out, there are plenty more to choose from.

Good Luck,

 - Steve

Ick...I moved away from Intermedia...I had LOTs of problems with my mail
server/web server being unreachable for hours at a time. THey could never
explain the problems. There connection speed was always totally random.
One minute I'd be blazing, then the next pages would timeout. Very
inconsistent. I mean, the internet in general is not all that constant, but
this was REALLY inconsistent. I had times when a simple username/password
validation to a SQL datasource took 4.5 minutes to execute.

That all being said, Intermedia's signup process is slick as can
be...totally automated, all login and control info sent via e-mail as soon
as you sign up...web directories generated instantly upon signup...if you're
moving domains, they give you your IP to browse to until the DNS switch.
They have a pretty nifty control panel for managing datasources, your
webserver, mail server, mail boxes, etc., though it can be a little
confusing trying to find charges and billing info.

The other thing that I REALLY didn't like, is that you can go into the
charging section, and it gives you a history of your billing, including FULL
credit card number. I have issue with them making it that easy to display
the credit card number I'm using for hosting. That should be on a separate
server, and at the very least, they should be transferring PART of the CC
number from one server to the other, internally. JMHO...

Connecting to the control panel IS on a secure connection, so I guess I'm
just overly paranoid...

Re: Hosting Question???

2000-11-07 Thread Leong Yew

Yes, I'm currently testing their services as well. So far the host seems
excellent. Try the control panel demo. I haven't seen anything like that.
You can install custom CF/CFX tags and activeX components, set up DSNs, all
in realtime. Tech support always responds (but since so much is automated,
you wouldn't need to contact them so often), and if you plan to resell,
they'll even supply you with the CF/ASP script for automated account
activation.

On top of that they're using CF 4.5.1 Enterprise. Their load balancing and
clustering option isn't established yet but their tech support says that
they plan to offer this in the future, although this might mean more
expensive plans.

I'm also waiting to see what atswebnet.com has to offer. Their website isn't
ready but you should email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your
requirements.

releases a new control panel which is pretty cool in itself. Their best
features for CF is that you can register your own CFX tags and dlls on
your own withut having to contact one of their admin guys to do it for
you, and there is no extra fee for it. They also have a feature where
you can start and stop your own web service, I havent used that yet so
Im not sure how that works. There are about 4 of us here work who use
them and so far we all like them the best.

Someone just recommended www.webexpose.net Their basic account is 50mb

sounds to

RE: Hosting Question???

2000-11-07 Thread Kevin Langevin

The question of abiding by licensing agreements is the responsibility of the
company that owns and operates the hardware. You have no obligation to
insure that the company is holding the appropriate licenses and cannot be
held liable in any way if they don't.

>From a practical standpoint, I don't think it is realistic to be provided
proof of licensing, but a good barometer would be to look at hosting
companies "partners or alliances" page and see if they are "certified
partner" of the software in question.

Besides that, there is no substitute for good judgement.

My 2 cents...

Is it reasonable to ask a hosting provider for proof of licensing for
server software such as NT, CF server, SQL server, e-commerce
applications, mail servers, etc.? Has anyone done this?

On the one hand this would seem very intrusive - especially if the host
has multiple servers and you insist that they prove they have sufficient
licensing for all servers (and cpu's, where applicable). On the other
hand, it strikes me that a large host might save tens or hundreds of
thousands of dollars by not fully licensing software, with little
likelihood of detection.

If your site is being hosted by an outside provider in a shared
environment what do you feel are your obligations for assuring that "you"
are properly abiding licensing agreements?

Thanks,
Jim
