Well, yeah. :-)

I've heard about the support for your stuff, from others, and I know
your personal beliefs regarding support, from the side of the
supporter and the supported, so it's not just because I like you, ya

We need young, fired-up coders (and users) to carry the standard, as
it were. Seems like they're mostly all excited about open source
languages.

Linking up with JBoss is just one of those ideas that strikes me as
synchronistic, if you will. It would be really great for the
language, and those who use it.

Seeing as how CF *is* Java based, and JRun's headed out... really,
from several angles, it's a swell idea.

Tactical, even.

I think it's great news for the CFML community in general, that one of
the engines will be so readily available. However I disagree on the
comments about Smith; it's more likely to me that Smith would cease to
exist. Its primary reason for existing was the fact it's open source,
but it was always the least-compatible 'alternative' engine and
possibly the slowest to develop.

Mark would know more but I just want to echo his sentiment. For something
like this to get put together it takes a while. That being said its still
what 6-8 months out? So there is a lot of time for more
announcements/changes (not FUD this is meant to be a positive statement).

I also take issue with the quote of "has to go open source" which implies
that is the only way for these alternative engines to survive and that is
simply not true. Both companies came to a conclusion that Open source is a
viable business solution and are taking that step. It is an awesome step and
should be encouraging, maybe some folks and blow life into Smith Project, or
maybe Smith can merge with one of the big 2? This is a great annoucement,
and for the first time ever there are now more open source CFML engines than
closed source CFML engines. Pretty freaking sweet.

If you've read some of my posts in the past, you'll know I think it is
crucially important as well.

Yup, I'm excited too. I loved Railo the first time I read about it, and the
more i looked into it and used it, the more impressed I was. I'm really glad
now that I put in the work to make sure my product ran on it, and I recently
felt confident enough to put a customer on their own VPS running Railo (on top
of Resin). Working more with it also has allowed me to give feedback on things
that could be tweaked to make it easier for other CF applications to run on it
with minimal compatibility issues, and I look forward to having more people
trying it out as that just means they'll be able to really make it a good,
solid, well-tested product. I was really impressed by how quick they would get
out an update that fixed a compatibility problem versus having to wait for the
next major release months or years down the road. They really seem to be
committed to making it easy to use, lightning fast, and with some really great
features that the other engines don't offer. Maybe it's because I am a
small-time, independent developer myself that I love someone that goes out and
takes on the big boys...and produces something really great.

What?!? And Mary Jo likes their customer service? That seals the deal!

I'd say it takes CF to the next level, and all us CF devs with 'it.

If we play our cards right, this can be very lucrative for everyone.
Commercial/product based, and open source/service based.

It'll hook some new blood, and, well, you know... mindshare is important.

This is a smart move that keeps CF fresh and whatnot... which is
really good for anyone involved in CF in any respect.

JBoss had been impressing the heck out of me, anyways. And they're
working on stuff that will deploy "anywhere", as well, which just--
well, all these paths are converging, and it's quite pleasant to see
ColdFusion getting in there. Maybe I won't have to push my other
skills as much in the future. LOL.

Makes what I've already invested in worth more, and who doesn't like
being worth more? Heh.

I'm genuinely excited to see where this leads, and the possibilities
it, um, makes possible.

The LGPL2 license is much more attractive than a straight GPL license. I am
really not up on the nuances of OS licenses but from what I understand you
can package an app with the Railo runtime and not have to release the code
of your app as OS. The GPL license for Open BD was a deal breaker for us.

Having a cf runtime rolled into a major java app server like JBoss is
awesome. Railo's cf offering is very impressive. The thought of getting the
JBoss developer community getting behind a cf runtime makes me giddy.

God I love CF.

I think (and know) you are wrong.

Do you think it takes a week for a company like Railo to turn open
source with someone like Red Hat? Two weeks? ok.. a month?

Its a big business decision, that was taken before BD even announced
their intentions.

Gert Franz is the guy that runs Railo.
