The two do entirely separate things. How can a rich client interface technology replace an application server tecnology? My vision is clouded so i'd like to ask it plainly as if I were not a CF developer. Is CF on the way out and is Felx the intended replacement? Re: lay person question
Flex is really just for front-end stuff. It still needs a back-end technology such as CF (or Java or ASP). Somebody blogged recently that Flex isn't really good for regular websites, but is great for intranet applications. I think we'll start to see some pretty cool website stuff too though. RE: lay person question
Nope, if anything Flex could lead to much more ColdFusion being used. Flex is a front end, presentation level tool. It can do very little for back end, data and business logic for you. It is designed to integrate with ColdFusion very natively. I am currently building a model/proposal to redo one of your flagship applications with a flex front end feeding of the ColdFusion CFC back end. It took me a couple of hours to build that backend. It has taken me a bit longer to get my head around the OOPness of the flex front end. -- Ian Skinner Web Programmer BloodSource www.BloodSource.org Sacramento, CA - | 1 | | - Binary Soduko | | | - C code. Re: lay person question
Flex is going to replace CF in the same way that carbon-fiber car bodies are going to replace engines. Both have to do with cars, but the statement doesn't make any sense, right? CF is a server-side scripting language and Flex is a new toy for building front ends / GUI's. In order to use Flex, you're still going to need to use ASP, PHP, CF, Java... to do the work on the server when the user interacts with the Flex front-end. You've got to have an engine to move that sweet carbon-fiber body down the road. --Ferg kurt schroeder wrote: I've developed cf for 10 years now, love it, love dot.net too for that matter, but what about Flex? LOL, I have no idea! I parked next to a car in the lot this morning that had a paint job meant to look like carbon fiber (can you say cheesy) so that came easily to mind! * Ken Ferguson 214.636.6126 * Steve LaBadie wrote: Ken, Want type of time frame are we looking at? Re: lay person question
Well this is what i was hoping for. Thanks everyone. Anyway, the anouncement of a server side element, so i was told, is what started the discussion and the idea of it possibly replacing CF. Thanks Again i asked the question and hoped to get the answers you all gave. Thanks KES I've developed cf for 10 years now, love it, love dot.net too for that matter, but what about Flex?
