[cfaussie] OT : SQL DBA Jnr Position

2005-07-05 Thread Chris Dawes

Hello again,

If you have some SQL experience and would love to be a DBA with
lots of SQL 2005 training and the potential of a MS cert thrown in, drop me a line
off list.

This is a pure DBA role.

Cheers,

Chris Dawes

Sounds like you have an opportunity to set up a CF talent agency.

[cfaussie] Don't Eat At McDonalds WAS [WOT] Cheap Petrol

2005-05-02 Thread Chris Dawes
I've had enough of this rubbish,

Why don't we pick on Shell this time? Why is it always Bloody BP! Ever think this e-mail originated from Shell or an independent petrol network? Pushing petrol prices down anyway will just make the 2 for $5 V deals $5.50 and no-one likes a cranky developer at 3am in the morning!!

Less than 45% of crude oil is petrol, and less than 30% of all fuel sales are consumers. Do the math... (or don't... what do I care... as long as V is 2 cans for $5!!)

It's kind of like telling people not to buy Microsoft Project and then expecting that to be the demise of the company. Fools. (Security flaws in Internet Explorer and .Net will be the demise of Microsoft)

Oh and Don't eat @ McDonalds. That way McDonalds will lower the price of cheeseburgers and that will force Hungry Jacks, KFC and George's For Fish to lower their cheeseburger prices...
In summary:

Please take drugs into Indonesia. If you make it back alive, I'll stop buying petrol from BP.
Kind Regards,Christopher Dawes
Dawes International

---
Hey all,    This is a crazy idea that just might work.    Shane    ---Forwarded Mesage-- Subject:  FW: Don't buy petrol at MOBIL OR BP!    I called the number on the bottom of the email, and it is for real.  This initiative does come from Barry Minster, worth calling and  chatting to him if you need reassurance.  Apparently we are going to hit close to $1.35 a litre by the  winter. If this happens the prices will flow on down to the price  of every thing we buy! Want petrol prices to come down? We need to  take some intelligent, united action. Philip Hollsworth, offered  this good idea.    This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain  "day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil  companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't  continue to "hurt ourselves" by refusing to buy petrol. It was more  of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,  whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can  really work.    How that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us  to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at .89 / .95 cents, we  need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control  the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more  each day, we consumers need to take action.    The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is  if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And  we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.    Here's the idea:    For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petro! l from the two  biggest oil companies (which now are: BP and Mobil). If they are  not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their  prices.    If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to  follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally  millions of BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!    Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll  explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending  this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least  ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ...and those 300 send it to at least ten  more (300 x 10 =3,000)... and so on, by the time the message  reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over  THREE MILLION consumers!    Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.  (and not buy at BP and Mobil) How long would all that take? If each  of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of  receipt, all ! 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted  within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had  that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a  difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.    PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO  THE 80 cents a LITRE RANGE.    It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy  your petrol at Shell, Caltex, GAS. or Gull Outlets and drive past  BP and MOBIL Stations.    Barry Minster  State President    Ex Service, Service  Veterans Party  www.esvp.asn.au  13 Ermington Place  Kew 3101  Telephone: 03 9816 9713  Disclaimer:    Baker Love Lawyers  Wallsend Office Tel: (02) 4951.5766  Fax: (02) 4951.2146  Charlestown Office: Tel: (02) 4943.6266  Fax: (02) 4943.7125    This e-mail contains confidential information which may be subject  to legal privilege. [cfaussie] OT: Symantec

2005-03-22 Thread Chris Dawes
Hello Chad,
If I where Symantec I would sell a product that actually detects viruses! They also said Firefox had as many security problems as IE in a SMH article lately... Seems they found something no-one else has?

They also got C|Net into trouble over a review of their anti-virus product which stated that it was the best because it was the only one to pick up a 'test virus'. Later C|Net apologised after the embarrassing conclusion that there was no such thing as a 'test virus' and when that result was omitted the product actually performed worse than most of the other major brands.

I would concentrate on detecting viruses _before_ they do something to your system, rather than trying to fix them after. You only have to look at the virus bulletin results to see how much your not protected with their products.

I've been using Nod32 for two years and none of my customers ever get viruses in their e-mail. Can't say that for Bl**dy Norton's unconfigureware software!!

Stick to Fax machine software Symantec!!
Kind Regards,Christopher Dawes
Dawes International

That sky, you know, it's really big... so... I think we should all  be careful... 'cause it's gonna fall some day.    If I were Symantec, I would spend more energy spreading viruses and  less time warning people about what may happen.  Less legal but  more effective marketing.    Chad  Who has yet to unsuccessfully fully uninstall the adware they call  Norton Anti-virus    -Original Message-  From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]  [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of  Pragnesh Vaghela Sent: Wednesday, 23 March 2005 1:11 PM To:  CFAussie Mailing List Subject: [cfaussie] Re: Pros and Cons of  Apple products      http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/0,261744,39185501,00.htm      "TRACEY, Darren" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message  news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]      Pros  http://shrinkster.com/386  Cons  http://shrinkster.com/387    Regards    Darren Tracey  Systems Analyst  HR Systems and FastTrack, Web and Integration Services  p: + 61 7 3232 4091 (x64091)  f: + 61 7 3232 4744  e: [EMAIL PROTECTED]  l: Lvl 3, 388 Queen St Brisbane QLD 4000  m: Suncorp IPC IT048, GPO Box 1453, Brisbane QLD 4000      --   -  This e-mail is sent by Suncorp-Metway Limited ABN 66 010 831 722  or    one of  its related entities "Suncorp".    Suncorp may be contacted at Level 18, 36 Wickham Terrace,  Brisbane or on 13 11 55  or at suncorp.com.au.    The content of this e-mail is the view of the sender or stated  author and  does not necessarily reflect the view of Suncorp. HelloSteve,

cfmx7 dev can be used on two ip addresses

1) localhost and 127.0.0.1 are one ip (as localhost is a looback to 127.0.0.1)

so you can develop from two machines.

[cfaussie] Re: Melbourne CFUG Meeting : TONIGHT 23/02/2005 Featuring Tim Buntel - Direct from the USA

2005-03-01 Thread Chris Dawes

HelloRobin,

I appreciate your comments bro. I have talked to you about this a couple of times on the phone.

I was one of the people who watched the presentations from cfug nsw. I thought they where great, not a widescreen cinematic masterpiece, but quality enough for those who could run breeze to watch. I found little problem with watching them and wondered why they disappeared. To us who live way out west it was a lifeline, one that has been removed and (as you can see in this list's history) has sparked many a debate about how best to get those of us who work and live out west could be serviced by the cfug system.

Our problem here is that anyone in Western Sydney would have to knock off around 4pm to go to the meetings. How about making the sydney people come out here (45 mins away)... didin't think so.. We couldn't even negotiate to have someone come out to run a separate cfug for western sydney people. I'd be more than happy to host one here in Acacia Gardens (near Quakers Hill/Blacktown). We have broadband/projectors/large room/facilities here... I'd even be happy to stream it via breeze so the sydney people could see what they're missing! The offer is on the table.

As someone who has qualifications in television production, and also have experience in streaming media, I find your suggestion that one would require a tv studio quite humorous. A simple webcam, or pc connected camera with a solid color background is quite simple to set up and from my experience works quite well in professional applications. Even with a whiteboard setup with a static camera position works well in most situations. At worst you could still easily stream the audio from the meeting with the computer screen instead of video, or perhaps a digital camera photo. I find it ironic that it's so hard to set up considering MM says it isn't?? It's pretty easy using other streaming products, in fact I'm streaming a wedding in May from Country vic to people in the UK/US/Germany! I'm really surprised you haven't come up with a working model you can flog to other usergroups around Australia, maybe even (God forbid) Microsoft ones. Macromeda should hire some real marketing people, I mean people who know how to market, not people who allow their competition to come to their only AU conference. (sorry got a bit muddled with another bone)

The RIA Awards was a great example of how this can work. You hosted that ceremony (in your swish black suit) and heaps of cf'ers logged in and heckled you...

As for Tim's presentation, is there any chance you could bring Tim's presentation to Western Sydney?

Kind Regards,
Christopher Dawes

to the contrary, any service that is provided to an Australian customer can be taken to court in Australia, even if it's a us firm.

I sight the case where Joseph Sputnik (or whatever) sued The New York Times in an Australian court, and it was found that as the offence happened in Australia to an Australian it was within it's duristiction.

HelloMark,

if you're just looking for an api type sms provider (instead of the a direct connection from your sms gateway)

vodazone or clickatell (same thing) are still the cheapest for normal text message and deliver reliably to all australian networks including orange.

[cfaussie] Coldfusion MX 7

2005-02-22 Thread Chris Dawes

Ifanyonewants a working copy of Coldfusion MX 7 Demo/Developer Windows I'm happy to burn and express post you a backup cd with for $10 inc gst. I'll even put it in a cute little cd case and secure it so that it doesn't slide during transport. :-)

Express Post : $4.90 for B4 envelope + $5.10 for downloading/burning it and driving to the post office. And I'll throw CFMX7 Demo on the cd as an extra. (that should keep the legal geeks happy).

Of course I wouldn't be distributing it, just burning a backup copy for friends! (wink wink)

2005-02-20 Thread Chris Dawes

HelloGeoff,

Just playing devil's advocate:

1) How many people really have fp6+? Most estimates are less than 50% (unless you're macromedia)... flash player 5 has a much larger penitration

2) Lazslo is free. (Enter the argument ASP vs CFM here)

3) Lazso will no doubt upgrade to the 2.0 actionscript architecture soon.

4) On my measly p3 900 laptop their example apps run smoothly

5) In any case.People don't care too much about performance if the usability is ok

6) And most importantly... is that the time! :-o Damn it, I'm too late for Beer and Tim in the city!!! Will it be breezed?

2005-02-18 Thread Chris Dawes

I think what we are getting at here is that Microsoft is at a conference that was designed to promote Macromedia products. Perhaps it's hard enough trying to convince our clients that coldfusion is the way to go. Daemon inviting MS to join the 'coldfusion' stream in the conference would quite easily be the equivilent to Bill Gates inviting Corel to show it's new office suit at a Microsoft developers conference :- that will NEVER happen.

I digress... where's the beer...

We will be moving to a new box with CFMX7 E over the next two or three months (just putting the box together now) mainly for using the gateway stuff and also need the enterprise level of cfdoc processing for a rather large online ticketing app that will be released mid this year.

Can I say a huge Yay for the new data encryption function features in CFMX7 Yay, Yay, Yay... do I want Blowfish, no DES, no encoding, wait...

Without giving a case study on blacklists (there is enough in the archives already)...

I've been bounced more than once trying to post from gmail to cfauusie, and other lists.

It's not my filter dude, it's spamcop, spamhaus, etc. G-mail is a huge producer of spam. It's smtp servers are on the blacklists all the time. That's why you send through your isp and it always works. I don't know how you can work around this really. If someone sends a pile of spam from the gmail servers they will get blocked, whether it is temporary or permanent. I wouldn't believe they have a sufficient record to get on a whitelist.

[cfaussie] Re: ANZ User Group Meeting Wednesday 16 Feb (MXDU Day 0) 6pm for 7pm Star City

2005-02-05 Thread Chris Dawes

HelloSean,

Here are some of my ideas for Saturday...

1) Take us all for a beer and explain how drinking beer is part of the development process.
2) Randomly pass out coldfusion MX7E licences while whistling something appropriate
3) See how many coldfusion programmers you can fit into one of those cars you can win at star city while it is still on the display stand and reiterate the need for teamwork in programming complex tasks...

or you could talk about how to seemlessly connect into .net applications from CFMX...

[cfaussie] Paypal in Aussie Dollars

2005-01-11 Thread Chris Dawes

Gotthis today...

--

New! Send and Receive Payments in Australian Dollars

PayPal Australia members! Now you can use PayPal in your local currency without hassles. With Australian Dollars added to the list of supported currencies, it's even easier for you to make and accept payments domestically without worrying about currency conversion or foreign exchange fees.

Sending a payment is simple. Select Australian Dollars from the list of currencies in the Send Money tab on the PayPal site. Or, you can make an Australian Dollar payment by clicking on the PayPal button included in many sellers' eBay.com.au listings.

In addition to using Australian Dollars, you can also make or accept payments in U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, and Yen. When sending money to someone or paying an eBay seller, your payment will automatically be converted to your preferred currency. The recipient will receive an email from PayPal stating the amount and currency of the payment. If your payment must be converted to another currency, the conversion calculation will be displayed to you at the time of payment.

Look for more enhancements to the PayPal service in Australia coming soon!

Yours sincerely,

PayPal

[cfaussie] Re: OT. ISP comparison

2004-12-21 Thread Chris Dawes

Hello,

We use Telstra at Home, Exetel @ work. Both are great. Our Telstra uptime ranges from about 200-500 hours before the router re-logs in and repeats that process. It hasn't been down in at least six months. We just moved from Optus Cable to Exetel ADSL at work. Optus Cable was quicker, but less reliable and didn't let us get to our internal servers via common ports)

Telstra had problems when it first rolled out, it's pretty damn good now...

Check whirlpool.net.au

Hi Geoff,

Now that sounds very interesting. I was contemplating having to write a
'site export' function for exactly the purpose you describe but this
just might save me from that...

My question is, do you know if it can be command line driven and hence
used as service/function by CF or is it purely a GUI Client tool?

Thanks,

The one I've had great success with is a commercial tool called: Web
 Copier (http://www.maximumsoft.com/products/wc_windows/overview.html)

The reason I liked it so, it converts everything (including the most
horrendously parameterised queries) to HTML and then rewrites all the
links to be relative to the static copy.

You can then take a single directory (and branches beneath) and redeploy
anywhere you like -- to a CDROM for example.

The only issue is that it seems to use a GUID for the filenames. But
then heh, if you just want a copy of the website and are not worried
about the filenames all is well.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with any particular

Should have been on sale today. We're running a bit late. Likely
tickets on sale Wednesday next week (or I will die trying).

I need to start thinking about lobbying my manager to let (pay for?)
me going, and I was looking for a time frame in which to do that!

Pricing? We're trying to keep this to the same as last year (750AUD)
with an option for an inaugral MXDU Banquet which will be an additional
billable item. We'll have a Conference Ticket+Banquet Ticket bundle option.

There will also be a set of hand-on, full day workshops on the 16th Feb
-- these will be Masterclasses with some fabulous options. Again an
optional extra cost.

(And obviously to do that I'm going to need to have prices and the
 rest of all that Jazz)

We should even have real Jazz -- stay tuned ;)

All the best,

[cfaussie] List Viruses WAS: Hello

2004-10-01 Thread Chris Dawes
I think Daemon need to install a virus scanner on the mail coming through
this list. One would have thought that server should have a virus scanner
for in and outgoing requests.

I use nod32, which picks up everything. All of my e-mails come in pre-virus
stripped. It's pretty sweet. Daemon should get something like that.

Hi Peter,

I see.
I've heard of similar things happening before. I just hope whoever it's
coming from will sort it out soon.

Unfortunately the chances are they don't even know they are doing it and as
these posts that we are seeing are via a List we don't even know who is
doing it as the original email headers have been stripped off.

We see squillions of these aliased posts every day, its a serious pain, and
a cost :-(

Here is a line from a bounce message I got back today from a mail server
somewhere for a post I allegedly sent:
..
Received: from mbcomms.net.au (dsl-210-15-204-246.NSW.netspace.net.au
[210.15.204.246])
..

Now if you peek at our address range it is not hard to discover that our
mail server's territory is 202.129.130.nnn (just look up mail.mbcomms.net.au
for example), we are certainly not a DSL connection via netspace in 210...
territory! :-)

From the IP address we know that whoever did send the email has a broadband
connection that has an IP address of 210.15.204.246 and is either a crook
(unlikely) or has an infected machine (very likely).

What we do is send off an email to the ISP concerned and hope they can sort
it, no great hopes

[cfaussie] Re: CFML Processors and Stand Alone Development Was (Re: Jeremy Allaire on ASP)

2004-09-24 Thread Chris Dawes
I'm not trying to start a flame war here, however Robin's sentiments seem as
heartfelt as a statement supporting the union movement might be from Mark
Latham. At the end of the day, what works best will be used, what is poorly
implemented may well fall by the wayside.

We all waved goodbye to Netscape during version four and hailed IE. Now it
seems the opposite is happening in the groundswell.

The gay implementation of CF's CFMAIL tag is one example of many! In fact
I'm still waiting to use the parameters that my tag libraries boast about!
Bar-humbug! Surely there's a work experience kid in there somewhere with a
couple of minutes to write the forty lines of code to make a poor excuse for
an e-mail tag great.

MM fudged the 6.0 release of it's product. If 6.2 or 7 aren't awesome from
day one... it's open season in open source land...

Well, they're still looking for people to contribute to the CFUG site if
you're offering. It's not going to be a very long list of CF clones at
present.

I also wouldn't hold my breath for a lot of other CF clones to come out,
or at least any that were reasonably useful. The initial development of
CFMX was one of the biggest development projects in Allaire/Macromedia
history, and a lot of very clever people were on the team.

Sure you can knock up a lot of the basic tags very quickly, but without
the more complex tags you may as well be using jsp.

BTW, in an earlier post you were talking about 9k for a ColdFusion
server - assume you were talking about Enterprise (which is a bit more).
If that's your baseline then there is a stripped down version of
ColdFusion - i.e. Standard. Last week we sold one to a client for $1650
inc - I wouldn't call that steep for an application server.

Forgive me but I just don't understand the rush to distance ourselves
from Macromedia. ColdFusion is a great product and a lot of good people
have worked hard to make it what it is. New Atlanta and others have
every right to build clones, but they don't automatically win my loyalty.

that will return a report with any issues, It may help you clean up your
wording and Subject line.

Getting through spam filters is becoming increasingly hard. Also look at
putting spf tags in your dns entries. The SPF and Caller ID specs have now
merged into one spec and will soon be standardised.

Here's some tools to help you create the records. The Microsoft one has the
new version incorporated already (v2) so I suggest using that wizard. Then
paste the created string into your TXT record in your DNS records.

Hey Ryan

Thanks for that but unfortunately no luck - still winding up in the Junk
Mail... Very frustrating. I've stripped the email back content wise for
testing purposes to a very basic email with no links or anything
'potentially nasty' and it still sent me to the junk.

Running out of options it seems :| Any more thoughts/suggestions?

Heya Chris,

Hotmail is probably picking up the MailerID as being Cold Fusion and
rejecting it on that basis...

You can change the mailer ID by doing something like this:

CFMAIL TO=... ... MAILERID=Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.3416
...
/CFMAIL

It will be as if the email was sent from Outlook...

bye!

[cfaussie] Re: Hotmail Junkmail filter

2004-09-22 Thread Chris Dawes

Am using CFMX 6.1 (now updator also). Use CFMX for text based e-mail, then
use a COM component for other multi-part e-mails.

CFMAIL and CFPOP work great from our box. We use Mailenable to send our mail
and it works super sweet! It also eliminates the problems some people have
with CFPOP. We did extensive testing and haven't had any trouble with CFMAIL
to date.

What version of CF are you running? I think 6.1 fixed some issues but
in general CFMAIL doesn't behave very well according to the email
specs. Spam filters pick up on this and treat its mail as spam.

We've had similar issues with SpamAssassin, but fortunately it tells
you what is wrong with each email.

Here are somethings we found that helped:

cfmail
from='#mailoutSender# #mailoutSenderEmail#'
to=#memberEmail#
subject=#mailoutSubject#
type=HTML
cfmailparam name=Message-Id
value=#createUUID()[EMAIL PROTECTED]
cfmailparam name=MIME-Version value=1.0
cfmailparam name=Reply-To
value=#get_mailout.mailoutSenderEmail#

The extra stuff in the from= attribute covers SpamAssassin catching
you out on the email coming from an email address only - not a real
name and an email.

The cfmailparam thingos are required mail headers that cfmail doesn't
include by default.

Have a look at these pages to find out more about these headers:

Message-Id Reply-To - http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2822.html - section 3.6
Mime-Version - http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2045.html section 4.

Also have a look at http://spamassassin.apache.org/tests_2_6x.html

[cfaussie] Re: soEditor 3 alpha 1 AND FCKEditor beta 2

2004-09-16 Thread Chris Dawes
Brett,

I can't see why tinyMCE should break your forms. One would suggest that it
is a clash of JavaScript functions.

From what I can gather from being involved indirectly with some other
editors there is an event that needs to be fired in firefox for the content
to be returned in the form. I'm not sure what it is, I've just heard it
talked about a lot on the FCK forums. Maybe have a look around FCK and you
might find your answer. I do believe this is on the 2do list at mozilla to
make it native.

Hi Chris,

I tried tinymce but it breaks my forms... In FF the textarea doesn't get
returned on the form and in IE6 the textarea is there but it is blank. I
tried the latest version (1.30) and even went back and tried 1.19 but
had the same problem. Any ideas?

Sorry, I can't be bothered joining the tinymce group. Maybe later...

Thanks,

Brilliant for browsing CFCs and seeing all the methods in the

I can eventually see Eclipse destroying dreamweaver as a

and eventually dreamweaver will just have a designer user base.

You can pay half an arm for DreamWeaver or get a far much
superior product
that is free :).

I know what the majority of CF developers weapon of choice will be in a

If you want AU support you would need to
use paymate (paymate.com.au) although this doesnt have an api as yet,
only a payment popup that you can integrate as a step.

[cfaussie] soEditor 3 alpha 1 AND FCKEditor beta 2

2004-09-14 Thread Chris Dawes
Both of these work in mozilla now...

Both have now implemented themes, the theme changer seems to be quicker on
soEditor (not that it would matter in a production environment!)

FYI :

SoEditor 3 alpha demos
http://www.siteobjects.com/siteobjects/soeditor3/pro/demos/

Actually not much to see here at the moment. Not many of the buttons are
functional. Notable is the full screen mode which unlike some other editors
stretches the layer to full screen -- _VERY_ nice!

FCKEditor Beta 2
http://www.fckeditor.net/Demo/

I really like the link editor in this product. The ability for a user (ie
me) to create popup windows natively in an editor product is quite something
else! This is a lot further along than soEditor (obviously) but some
extremely promising developments here. This is currently heading toward
beta3.

Enjoy...

Mike,

Of course that largely depends on Microsoft for IE and Mozilla for Firefox
implementing full functionality in their particular control. I know they
boast XHTML 1.0 'support' however I am unaware of the extent of the
implementation.

I also forgot to mention that a feature of soeditor now is the dynamic
scripting api that sits behind it so that you can change the featureset
realtime (ie add/remove buttons, change the content on the fly via
JavaScript)
