FREEDOM IS NOT ENOUGH The following excerptcomes from a letter, written by James Harry Reyos, which appeared in the Austin Chronicle on 24 June 2005: I humbly appeal to you, Gov. Perry, to intervene and help bring my wrongful conviction to an end. Dont give me the deaf ear, governor! Dont ignore my cry of innocence, governor! Dont ignore my call for justice, governor! Dont allow my wrongful conviction to linger on and on and on, governor!One thing is for certain, and has been proven to be true: I did not kill Father Patrick Ryan. I was innocent yesterday! I am innocent today! And, I will be innocent in perpetuity! You may have never heard of James Harry Reyos, but I can tell you he is a gentle softspoken man from Texas who is a trueinspiration tomy soul. Hehas beendriven for a very long time bya spirit of unsatisfied justice, but he called me tonight to share some very hopeful news. Before I share his message, let me tell you just the basics about about James. In 1983 James Reyos was jailed after being convicted of the murder of Father Patrick Ryan, a Catholic priest who had been found brutally murdered in a Texas motel room two years earlier. Jamesmaintainedhis innocence throughout his years of imprisonment.Many believed him. Even C/Os wrote letters of support to the Texas Parole Board but to no avail: James served the full thirty-eightyears that rightfully belong to another man.What that manmay havebeen doing all these yearsshould weighheavy onthe conscience of all involved in James' incarceration Ifyou still believe our justice system works,this caseshouldhaunt you because it is representative of what's happened to too many Americans. In a statement released Friday, the Nashville-based company said federal prosecutors for the Southern District of New York issued a subpoena for documents HCA believes are related to the sale of its stock by the senator. Frist's office confirmed the SEC is looking into the sale. The SEC also contacted HCA on Friday to informally request copies of the subpoenaed documents, HCA spokesman Jeff Prescott said. "We of course will comply with that request," he said. Frist traded using only public information, and only to eliminate the appearance of a conflict of interest, Frist spokesman Bob Stevenson said in an e-mail Friday. "Not surprisingly, the Securities and Exchange Commission contacted Senator Frist's office after the story appeared in the press about the sale of his Hospital Corporation of America stock," Stevenson said. "The majority leader will provide the SEC any information that it needs with respect to this matter." Frist spokeswoman Amy Call again declined to comment on the timing of the sale, saying, "His only objective in selling the stock was to eliminate the appearance of a conflict of interest." HCA, the nation's largest for-profit hospital company, was founded by Frist's father. His brother was formerly its CEO and chairman and remains on the board of directors. Frist asked a trustee to sell all his HCA stock in June, near a 52-week stock price peak of $58.40 and at the same time HCA insiders were selling off shares. Reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission showed insiders sold about 2.3 million shares, worth about $112 million, from January through June, said Mark LoPresti of Thomson Financial. The sale came about two weeks before the company issued a disappointing earnings forecast that drove its stock price down almost 16 percent by mid-July. They still have not recovered, closing Thursday at $45.90. The value of Frist's stock at the time of the sale was not disclosed. Earlier this year, he reported holding blind trusts valued at $7 million to $35 million. The sale of stock was first reported Monday by Congressional Quarterly. On Tuesday, The Associated Press reported that the stock was sold at or near its peak between June 13, when Frist asked the shares to be sold, and July 1, when he was told the sale was complete. On July 8 he was informed that his wife and children's shares had also been sold per his request, his spokeswoman Amy Call said. For years, Frist was criticized for holding HCA stock while directing legislation on Medicare reform and patient issues. He and his office have consistently deflected criticism by noting that his assets were in a blind trust and not under his active control. But Senate ethics rules allowed him more control than most observers realized. Under the guidelines, senators can directly order the sale of any asset in the trust to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest. The senator also can communicate to the trustee matters of concern, including "an interest in maximizing income or long-term capital gain." That is not how blind trusts normally work, said David Becker, who was general counsel at the SEC from 2000 to 2002. Frist, a Tennessee Republican, is widely considered a potential presidential candidate in 2008. HCA said the subpoena seeks the "production of documents," and said it plans to fully cooperate with the investigation. On Thursday, SEC spokesman John Nester would neither confirm nor deny that Frist or any officer or director of HCA is the subject of an investigation, citing the agency's policy. "This country is in crisis, and since politicians are incapable of creating jobs, they create fantasies." Irizarry quickly clarified that his municipal government would not invest in the project. Instead, he has promised to help Rios get the proper building permits. UFO beliefs widely held The mayor insists his goal is to attract tourists to his small town. But he is also among Lajans who believe they have seen UFOs in the area. "It's a very mysterious place," said Irizarry, who says he once saw red lights zigzagging above the hills. "A lot of people have seen things." Francisco Negron, the farmer who put up the sign and allows UFO watchers to gather at his ranch, volunteered his property for the landing strip. He and Rios estimate the project could cost up to $100,000 and are looking for money from private companies. Negron, a soft-spoken grandfather, has applied for a permit to build a road to Indian Hill, the chosen site for the strip. Negron and others say a UFO crashed on the hill in 1997. They claim they heard a boom and saw the hill go up in flames. Rios, who leads a group called "UFO International" that holds nighttime vigils to search for signs of alien life, lets Negron worry about details like investment costs and permits while he envisions the design. What's blimp looking for? But it's a little-known aerostat off the Extraterrestrial Route that inspires UFO lore in Lajas. The U.S. military uses the aerostat, a tethered blimp with a radar system, to detect low-flying drug smuggling planes. But many Lajans don't believe that. "We've had to move the international reserves from U.S. banks because of the threats," from the U.S., Chavez said during televised remarks from a South American summit in Brazil. "The reserves we had (invested) in U.S. Treasury bonds, we've sold them and we moved them to Europe and other countries," he said. Chavez, a sharp critic of what he calls "imperialist" U.S.-style capitalism, has often criticized foreign banks for the power they wield in international financial markets at the expense of poorer countries. Chavez again proposed the creation of a South American central bank that would hold the foreign exchange reserves of all the central banks in the region. "I'm ready right now with the Venezuelan central bank ... to move $5 billion (euro4.15 billion) (of Venezuelan reserves), to a South American bank," Chavez said. Central bank officials could not be immediately reached for more details. Chavez has also argued against central bank autonomy, saying excess foreign reserves should be spent on economic development projects. Under his presidency, Venezuela's mostly pro-Chavez Congress changed central bank laws earlier this year so the government could tap reserves for spending, despite criticism that it would lead to devaluation of the local currency and higher inflation. Every year the central bank must now compute an "optimum" amount of reserves and hand over the rest to a newly created national development fund. Money held in the fund will be used for overseas purchases and to pay off outstanding debt. Many listservers would interpret the bounce as confirmation, since it contains all of the just hit reply and include this phrase. Then the function as a user would be to bounce all messages back, and listserver would accept those bounces as subscriber emails. I just used this method to subscribe a member of this group to my Day of the Dead group. Please, that person, just delete the mail and let it expire (unless you really want to join, of course). I just did this to show how easy it was.
