Re: Stus-List Sound exciter installation on a C&C 29 sailboat

2014-09-09 Thread Ted Drossos via CnC-List
Yes, the person who posted that video of the sound exciter installation on a
C&C 29 is a lister. Me. I have to say that I was very skeptical when I
originally started that project but figured that it was worth a shot. Cutting
6" diameter holes in my cockpit had prevented me from adding speakers for many
years. That YouTube video was taken with an iPad so the sound quality isn't a
true representation of the great sound that these little sound exciters can
produce. A typical speaker would also make nearby objects vibrate if they were
loose and in close proximity. It's not an issue. This is a great solution to
adding sound in the cockpit without having to cut holes. They stay dry and
can't be accidentally damaged by a foot going through them. I've seen that
happen all to often on other boats.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on C&C 44

2014-09-09 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
Thanks for all the input. I will summarize what I have found so far about
engine replacements.
Much to my surprise pricing for new Yanmar engines with similar hp (55 hp)
to the old engine pricing is better in Canada compared to the US.
With "boat show" pricing I have been quoted $14,900 US (list $18320) for a
4JH5E or 4JH57. Of course with Yanmar products they can't be shipped to
other regions so I would have to pick it up in the US and pay state tax,
followed by Canadian tax when it is brought into Canada. (total about 20%
:( )
Canadian pricing is approx $14900 CAN, roughly 10% less given the exchange
rate and I wouldn't incur the US state tax.

As many recommend Beta as an alternative to Yanmar I started looking at
them as well. The 50 hp option is about $14,000 CAN before any options
(higher output alternator, longer wiring harness etc) and this is before
adding any of the items required to change engine mounts, exhaust etc. I
don't see the significant savings I was expecting based on others
experience. It sounds like maintainability (parts, access) are better than
Yanmar so savings aren't only $.

I am likely going to put in a remanufactured Yanmar 4JH3 which I have been
told should be a drop in fully replacement with the same hp as my
turbocharged older model. It sounds like Schooner Bay have an excellent
reputation delivering fully remanufactured engines for less than half the
price of a new engine.

Thanks for everyones input. I will update the list as my project proceeds.

After three years my stereo is fully functional. I replaced the old
stereo with a Sony unit after I bought the boat. One of the 2 interior
speakers worked and the 2 cheapo West cockpit speakers worked.
After spending way too much time, I finally figured out that the speaker
wire was to corroded to carry a signal. Initially, I replaced most of the
wire with household wire. DON"T USE HOUSEHOLD SPEAKER WIRE. That lasted
about a season. I finally replaced all of the wire with marine grade
wire. Then I discovered that the rubber around the speaker cones
disintegrated. I bought 5 1/4 inch car speakers that fit into the
enclosures for the cabin speakers, and then found out the cockpit speakers
did't work. Turns out someone twisted and taped the connections. New
 crimp connectors fixed them.

 Finally, 4 working speakers!
Now, need to upgrade the cockpit speakers.

event. I have sent in my dock form. Do you know if there

are shower facilities? I am wondering what you expect

food access to be. My recollection is that Ft. Adams has

nothing nearby, but I have never

explored the area much. Should we plan for meals on

board, or do you think we will be going out somewhere local

 for some meals? Dave

Me three on the Kubota engines.

I replaced my Perkins with a Nanni, which is a French version of the Beta.
The I liked the exhaust elbow and intake silencer on the Nanni, but also
liked the serpentine belt on the Beta. As it turns out, the crappy
alternator on the Nanne, (something from Slovakia or somewhere) cracked and
I replaced it with some Balmer stuff which was pricy, but worth it, if
nothing else but for their service dept.

Boat shows coming up, you can finagle a deal with one of them and bring it

Jonathan,

When we replaced Perceptions Engine, we bought a Beta engine - imported it
from England - saved over the Yanmar, and can now use Kubota parts!

It was Yanmars Canadian pricing that caused us to look at other options -
the parts to rebuild were 2/3rds of the price of the beta - without touching
the transmission, starting system, alternator, cooling system ..

The Yanmar 4JH-TE on our C&C 44 went bang on the weekend. It was the last
thing on the boat that hadn't been replaced so in some ways it is a relief
to replace it. It is unclear whether we will go new or remanufactured at
this point.

I have been appalled in the past at Canadian pricing on Yanmar parts and I
suspect complete engines would be the same. Nonetheless I will probably get
a quote from a Canadian dealer.

Who in the US would be recommended to get a quote from? We were happy with
Bay Shore Marine on our way through Annapolis, does anyone have experience
buying a complete engine from them?

Is there compatibility with engine mounts , exhaust etc between the various
Yanmar models?

(4JH, 4JH2, 4JH3, 4JH4, 4JH5)

If so this could open up the number of potential replacements.

For remanufactured Schooner Bay Imports (Al Holzer) in WI seems to be highly
recommended.

Our current model is 56 hp but I think anything above 46 hp would be
sufficient so the non turbocharged versions would work fine and of course
the more recent non turbo versions have the same or higher horsepower.

Any guidance on who to contact based on your experience would be
appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

Sounds like a fine solution. 1/1 review said the transducers are not reliable

I would think the quality of the sound would be greatly influenced by the
material it is mounted in. Fiberglass works well as a speaker cone? I wonder
what the high end would be like. Bass would probably do well. And if anything
else was mounted loosely it would add a bit of extra percussion at resonating
frequencies.
Seriously though this is an intriguing alternative. I'd like to hear how it

May I suggest an alternative? I replaced the stereo in the cabin with a new
Bluetooth-capable head unit from West Marine. On those rare occasions when I
desire music in the cockpit, I use an Eton Rugged Rukus Solar Powered Wireless
Sound System:
http://www.mec.ca/product/5033-782/eton-rugged-rukus-solar-powered-wireless-sound-system

I use my phone or my tablet as my music player / remote control.

As an added benefit, this system gives me a Bluetooth speaker phone in the
cabin for making or receiving cell phone calls. Also - no holes!

Subject: Stus-List Stereo finally works

After three years my stereo is fully functional. I replaced the old stereo
with a Sony unit after I bought the boat. One of the 2 interior speakers
worked and the 2 cheapo West cockpit speakers worked.
After spending way too much time, I finally figured out that the speaker wire
was to corroded to carry a signal. Initially, I replaced most of the wire with
household wire. DON"T USE HOUSEHOLD SPEAKER WIRE. That lasted about a season.
I finally replaced all of the wire with marine grade wire. Then I discovered
that the rubber around the speaker cones disintegrated. I bought 5 1/4 inch car
speakers that fit into the enclosures for the cabin speakers, and then found
out the cockpit speakers did't work. Turns out someone twisted and taped the
connections. New crimp connectors fixed them.

Finally, 4 working speakers!
Now, need to upgrade the cockpit speakers.

Re: Stus-List Stereo finally works

2014-09-09 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
All,

I have a “car” stereo on board the Enterprise, which worked fine with
speakers inside and out, but now I’m removing it — so before you go running
wires and drilling big holes, I suggest you consider this: A portable bluetooth
speaker.

We all have our iPhones, iPads Galaxy’s and Droids all loaded with
Internet radio and your own playlists of practically every song you’ve ever
heard in your entire life. Most can be charged via USB and you can put them
wherever you want them and some have controls to pause, skip or replay songs
right on the speaker, so you can leave your phone or tablet down below where it
won’t get wet or fall overboard. I have one that even lets me interact with
Siri, so I can, while my phone sits in the chart table below, push a button and
say “Play songs by Train” and after a second, Siri responds with “Here’s your
Train”, followed by Hey Soul Sister, Drive-By, Angel in Blue Jeans, etc. Sweet.

I’ve seen some which are completely waterproof and even let you receive
calls.

The sound quality is great, there’s no drain on your boat’s batteries,
and there’s no annoying DJs or commercials (I used to be a DJ). Plus there’s no
big magnets interfering with compasses and no cursing that there’s music in the
cockpit while you’re lounging on the foredeck.

Have a bunch of CDs? Rip them into digital files and store them on your
computer/device. The first CDs made are starting to fail now. Get your music
off of them and get rid of them. One rainy day and you can do a ton. I have so
much music digitized that I could play my iPhone for three days straight and
never hear the same song twice. Most radio stations can’t go four hours without
playing the same song twice.

Better listening experience, no wires, no holes, no battery drain, and
no magnetic interference.

All the best,

Edd

Joel, that's where I put my cockpit speakers. The inspection port holes
were ever so slightly bigger than needed for the speakers, but we made it
work. We installed Alpine boat speakers (6.5" SPS-M600, I think
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-veRQ4gwHTdV/p_500SPSM600/Alpine-SPS-M600.html)
and they are working fine and sounding good after four years.

Stus-List Stereo finally works

This is what I'm planning on doing for cockpit speakers:
http://www.parts-express.com/tectonic-elements-teax32c30-4-b-32mm-balanced-exciter-4-ohms--297-224

No cutting fiberglass, no disintegrating cones. No waterproofing issues It
drives the surface it's mounted on as a cone. Look it up in Youtube
there's a guy whom installed them in his cockpit and it seems to work
really well.

Traffic and submissions on the old Forum were minimal and it did not appear to

Re: Stus-List Stereo finally works

2014-09-09 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
I did the same - two different set of 'marine' speakers lasted about a year
each before they disintegrated. Now, I have some neat starboard covers for
where they used to be - the inside ones are OK. I guess I never really wanted
outside noise.

I cut holes to put so-called weatherproof cockpit speakers on Alianna, wish I
had not done that. We hardly ever used them and now one has a bad crackle
noise already.I suggest spending that extra money on better cabin speakers. I
just disconnected my cockpit speakers so now they look like air vents

I'm thinking of mounting the new speakers in the inspection port covers in
the transom. I hate cutting holes in my boat! I'll wait for the Defender sale
to shop for speakers, but I rarely sail with the stereo on, so I'm not looking
to spend big bucks.

After three years my stereo is fully functional. I replaced the old stereo
with a Sony unit after I bought the boat. One of the 2 interior speakers
worked and the 2 cheapo West cockpit speakers worked.

After spending way too much time, I finally figured out that the speaker
wire was to corroded to carry a signal. Initially, I replaced most of the wire
with household wire. DON"T USE HOUSEHOLD SPEAKER WIRE. That lasted about a
season. I finally replaced all of the wire with marine grade wire. Then I
discovered that the rubber around the speaker cones disintegrated. I bought 5
1/4 inch car speakers that fit into the enclosures for the cabin speakers, and
then found out the cockpit speakers did't work. Turns out someone twisted and
taped the connections. New crimp connectors fixed them.

Finally, 4 working speakers!

Now, need to upgrade the cockpit speakers.
