Stus-List Survey - C 30MKII - additional thoughts to share

2017-10-19 Thread kelly petew via CnC-List
Lisle, Hi,

Recently, as current owner of a 30 mkII, I sent you a list of things to
consider.
In response to your latest email below, I can share the following:

My boat's rudder is 'wet' also, based on moisture meter readings.
As others on this list have recommended, I will drill a hole in the rudder's
bottom so any water can drain [plug it in the spring].
In nearly 14 years of owning my 30MKII [1991 vintage], this is the only action
I've taken on this issue.
That said, I would recommend you check the rudderpost for a zerc fitting [a bit
challenging to access from starboard cockpit locker]. Apply grease here
annually. This might help keep out the moisture.
Also, check the muffler. Mine was metal, and it eventually corroded badly at
the drain plug and leaked. I replaced it with a fiberglass muffler [email me
for details, if you like].
Also, if the surveyor didn't do this, remove the aft cabin flooring [behind the
batteries], and check the strut bolts. Mine are showing some rust stains, but
I'm not seeing elevated moisture readings in that area of the hull.
I have always had some water in the bilge, from the mast. Not a lot, but some
[however, in a tropical storm, I would get a nearly FULL bilge].

Periodically, I get water intrusion [not a lot], below the hatches, both at the
mast and in v-berth. I think it's from the crazing of the lenses. I am
replacing them.
Last year, I had to replace the original water heater.
Currently, I'm dealing with a leak in the starboard water tank. I think the
leak is along a crack that started at the exit hole [aft end of tank]. This
tank is easily removed, but it is proving challenging to repair. I don't know
about extracting the v-berth tank.

Good Luck!

Hi all,

I've gotten the survey back on the 1987 30MKii I'm considering.

Above average condition overall, the surveyor was impressed by the
condition overall.

The rudder has significant water intrusion despite previous repairs, there
are slight depressions in the hull on the aft supports due to boat being on
the hard for over a year (surveyor thinks these will come out when launched
but need to address it now by putting wider pads), and there appear to be
two leaks - one at the forward hatch and one possibly around the mast
(there was a bit of water on the cushion just forward of the galley). Boat
has recent (2015) new sails, 2 new ST winches, and a new mast track.

FMV estimate is ~18% below asking price.

Given this, any final words of wisdom for me as try to negotiate a final
deal?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stus-List C 37+ xl for sale

2017-10-19 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
"Pac Cup Veteran" does suggest good gear and an owner that knows what they
are doing and has the funds to invest in the ~$100k to pull off a Pac Cup.
(vetted number from the boat I crewed on for Pac Cup and from another
entrant I know). I doubt the sails (sales) are nearly as tired as the
dacron bed sheets sold with most older C's. She's been raced obviously.
That said, every owner, I've ever raced with has taken better care of their
boat than the average cruisers I know and they don't often flog their sails
and rigging like many cruisers do. Nobody could say if there was
significant water in the boat as with any boat on the market.

Fact is, though we love our C's the larger and older boats are the least
attractive on the used boat market and are going for peanuts because of
this. People who have the skills and funds to own a 40' boat (not as a
liveaboard) are generally older and likely more comfortable financially.
These buyers are less likely to want an older boat that takes 'work' to
maintain or 'work' to sail, hence furling mains and jibs, and powered
halyard winches at least.

My 2 cents too.

Stus-List Aluminum Cleats on doghouse of 35 Mk I

2017-10-19 Thread Glen Eddie via CnC-List
Hello everyone.

Does anyone know who manufactured the cleats on the C Mk I. I have just
finished rebedding all the hardware save for the cleats on the doghouse and
cannot find the original cleats (long story and yes probably with the chain
plate that was, and remains, lost). I would prefer to buy the same cleats to

repainting the deck.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stus-List C 37+ xl for sale

2017-10-19 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
"Maggie" has been on the market for over a year at least. I've been keeping
an eye on the listing. I doubt there is anything wrong with her. In fact,
her keel has been dropped and rebed and the rudder dropped and serviced for
their Pac Cup run in 2012.

If the Bridge Deck on the 37+ was not absurdly high (my opinion) I would
really like this boat. The tradeoff of the very high bridge deck and ~3
extra companionway stairs for the walk around aft berth doesn't seem worth
it in IMO. Contorting underneath a high dodger every time you need to go
below for a beer seems inconvenient ;)

Otherwise, the 37+ is one of my very favorite boats and I still covet one.

Re: Stus-List Anchor links.

2017-10-19 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
For some reason, the first link connecting to the rope seems to get way
more corroded than any other part of the chain/rode assembly, possibly
because it is buried in the chain locker with a bunch of salty wet rope.
The swivel end was never a problem on my setup. Until the swivel itself
broke and dropped a nice 35-lb Delta to the bottom in 40 feet of water...
The best thing would be to see if there is an issue after a few months with
a galvanized shackle. At least that end is usually easy to keep track of,
especially if the anchor lives on a roller. Having that shackle on deck
also allows it to be rinsed with fresh water regularly.

Splicing the chain to the rode only fixes half the problem. What about the

Re: Stus-List survey says...

2017-10-19 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Lisle,

I’d get a quote from Foss Foam http://www.boatrudder.com/ if the previous owner
has been unable to fix the problem of water intrusion and take that cost off
the price of the purchase, and be sure to include the labor cost of removing
and refitting the rudder and steering gear (Edson radial drive wheels are made
to a precise fit to the closest .002” so that may need to be replaced as well
to fit the new rudder). Make sure to specify if the boat is full keel or wing
keel as the rudder size will be different for each model.

If the hull is intact (no cracks or delamination) due to the stand placement,
it will likely rebound once the weight is off the stands. I would also make
the sale contingent on a sea trial, because if the boat has been sitting on the
hard for several years, things such as stuffing boxes, through hulls, various
electronics, and running gear won’t be able to be fully vetted without putting
them in the water and giving the boat a whirl. Ask me why I suggest this…

Hi all,

I've gotten the survey back on the 1987 30MKii I'm considering.

Above average condition overall, the surveyor was impressed by the condition
overall.

The rudder has significant water intrusion despite previous repairs, there are
slight depressions in the hull on the aft supports due to boat being on the
hard for over a year (surveyor thinks these will come out when launched but
need to address it now by putting wider pads), and there appear to be two leaks
- one at the forward hatch and one possibly around the mast (there was a bit of
water on the cushion just forward of the galley). Boat has recent (2015) new
sails, 2 new ST winches, and a new mast track.

FMV estimate is ~18% below asking price.

Given this, any final words of wisdom for me as try to negotiate a final deal?

Thanks in advance.

Seems reasonable. The hull will spring back into place. Mine has done so a
number of years if I don't get to adjusting the pads just right after it gets
moves in the yard. Shouldn't be much pressure there anyways. The pads are only
to keep the boat from falling over. The two leaks are common areas. Mast boot
around keel stepped mast and new bedding of either the hatch or the glazing in
the hatch is likely all that is needed.
Enjoy.

I have been doing that for years. I found the back splice easier to do than the
splice where the anchor line continues along the chain weaving in and out, that
one is a bit more effort.

If it is I can put a galvanized shackle, but where the chain attached too the
anchor is a stainless mantus swivel, so the issue would be the same.
What do I do besides all stainless chain? If that is possible.
