Don't force it, get a bigger hammer! Seriously, on the new boat I had to give
the cold plate a few "taps" with a three lb hammer to break it free.
Are you sure there are only two screws? Mine were fastened at all four corners.

I was surprised to find gate valves on my 1981 40'. I thought C & C would have
known better. Replaced them all with proper seacocks.

Agree with the comments so far.

To help understand comments/concerns on gate valves, Google images of them.
The issue with them is the stem may corrode so it no longer works or is no
longer connected to the gate. You turn the stem (handle) several turns until
it stops and think the valve is open or closed. However, the stem may not have
pulled the gate open or pushed it closed. So unless you pour water into the
scupper and see what happens, you won't know if it is working. The same
concern exists for globe valves although globe valves are not commonly found.

1/4 turn marine grade valves are the new standard.

If the hoses are more than 10 years old, replace them.

Kyle,

I have a 1977 C 26.
Your engine looks like a raw water cooled Yanmar. (Mine is a fresh water cooled
2GM20F)
As previously stated, the 2 large black gate valves are cockpit drains.
The red hose at the front of the engine is the raw water inlet to the water
pump. The water out will be ejected through the exhaust, probably via a water
muffler and then out the back of the transom.
When you start the engine, give it time to fill the water muffler and you
should see water and exhaust gases come out the exhaust on the transom
(probably at water level)
If you don’t get water out, shut it down and investigate:
Blocked inlet
Pump impeller
Blocked water jacket
Blocked “T” inlet into the exhaust elbow
Blocked hoses or water muffler.

I agree That’s Lotta boat for your price ! Would have snatched it up but I

where near that price X2+ for 3 more ft ! Being my first boat would have
been happy with 34 if I fit but was a local and fair deal. With exception of a
few small details and fixes I do love what I have now.

I looked with POP yachts as mentioned easy to cover a lot of turf! I put an
offer on Beny 36.7 in FL and accepted then got passed around to 3-4 people and
I bailed. Not comfortable. Kinda like independents , they get you to list when
and if it sell they get a piece or more if they sell it.

Best of luck she should go quick !

2018-08-21 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
The gate valves in the scoopers were probably quite common at the time the boat
was built. My C 24 had them there, as well (interestingly, they still worked
after over 35 years, but the boat was in the fresh water).

I would also have a very close look at the ball valve (on the red, cooling
water intake hose). It looks like it is a “normal” brass shutoff valve
(hardware store?). If you are sailing in fresh water, it is not a big issue,
but in salt water, you need a bronze valve or a Marelon valve (the brass would
corrode reasonably quickly).

I like Marelon, but some people (probably stronger than me) claim that the
plastic is not sturdy enough (if the valve is stuck you risk breaking off the
handle).

Good luck

Re: Stus-List USCG Notification of LED Interference

2018-08-21 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
I was just about to send out a similar email. Below is a link to a
Passagemaker.com article regarding “Potential LED
Interference With VHF, DSC, and AIS Communications “. In short, the main issue
are LEDs in proximity to antennas.

In my case, I have a mast head antenna and a LED anchor bulb. I have not
noticed any issues, but then I don’t usually have the VHF and the anchor light
on simultaneously. But the test they outline seems simple, so why not test all
LEDs.

1. Turn off LED lights
2. Tune VHF radio to a quiet channel (USCG gives Ch 13 as an example,
though this may not be the best channel in all waterways)
3. Adjust the VHF radio's squelch control until the radio outputs audio
noise.
4. Re-adjust the VHF radio’s squelch control until the audio noise is
quiet, only slightly above the noise threshold.
5. Turn on the LED light(s), do this for each circuit/type of lights
(spotlight, navigation lights, deck lights, interior lights (by area of the
boat).
1.If the radio now outputs audio noise, then the LEDs have
raised the noise floor. (Noise floor is generally the amount of interfering
signals / static received beyond the specific signal or channel being
monitored.)
2. If the radio does not output audio noise, then LEDs have not
raised the noise floor.

Re: Stus-List Water valves

2018-08-21 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
The valve in front of the engine with the red hose is a ball valve and it
is an inlet that feeds water into the raw water pump that is used to cool
the engine. This cooling water is eventually injected into your exhaust
system at the exhaust elbow, to cool the exhaust gas as it runs through the
boat to the exhaust outlet through a rubber hose that would otherwise get
too hot. That ball valve is not original to the boat, there would have been
some other type of valve there as ball valves were not common when your
boat was built.

The two larger ones (black handle and red handle), connected to the larger
black hoses are a type of valve called a gate valve and it is quite likely
they no long work at all. My guess is that the large black hoses connect
to cockpit drains in the cockpit floor.

Re: Stus-List Pop yachts

2018-08-21 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Kevin,

I wouldn’t consider POP Yachts as a scam but as an internet based brokerage
that covers the entire country, they’re going to have limitations. I speak
from experience having bought Half Magic, my 1983 35 Landfall through them.
Bottom line, they had what I was looking for.I first made contact in the
spring several years ago when I first saw the boat listed. At the time, there
were very few Landfall 35 for sale on Yacht World and none in New England so
when I saw this one online in my general region with a comparable price to
other’s around the US and Canada, I went to look at it. POP Yachts’ broker was
local in Gloucester and she came to show the boat on the owner’s property north
of Boston. Being a powerboater, she had limited knowledge of the vessel and
certainly couldn’t speak to its overall condition other than to recommend a
thorough survey prior to any purchase. While interested, I chose to wait and
many months past before I got a follow up from a different broker from POP
Yachts asking if I was still in the market. At that time, I was in a better
position to buy and went again to see the boat, and the broker they sent to
“re-show” the boat was a sailboater from New Hampshire. His knowledge of
specific issues with the boat was slightly better, but again, suggested a
survey. After deliberation, I made a VERY low offer on the boat, mostly
because it had been sitting on the hard for several years and assumed the owner
would be somewhat desperate to sell. As it turned out, he wasn’t. And the
primary reason he was rather married to his price was that he had originally
listed the boat with POP Yachts at a VERY inflated price and over time had
whittled the selling price to what he considered to be a rock bottom price. In
a private conversation, the seller felt that I should walk away from the deal
and then contact him directly after he “fired” POP Yachts and would negotiate a
price that would be amicable to both of us. While intrigued at the prospect
of buying the boat at a cheaper price, I had problems with doing an end around
on a broker that had, up to that point, been up front with me and had taken the
time to show the boat twice. It just wasn’t ethical in my mind and it may
very well have held up the sale if the seller had violated the terms of his
contract with POP Yachts.

So, once I made my offer, the regional broker didn’t handle a lot of back and
forth between me and the seller although he was present at the survey. Most
negotiations were conducted by phone through another POP Yachts agent, this
time in North Carolina. I would say that the negotiator did a good job of
softening the seller enough for a deal to be made, but was patient and listened
to all my concerns. He was good..

Once we made a deal, got the survey done and addressed the costs associated
with fixing what the survey revealed, the paperwork, contract, Coast Guard
documents and every detail was completed by POP Yachts and for what its worth,
made the purchase process somewhat easy.

Now whether the seller considered his experience with POP Yachts as a good
investment, I can’t tell. He didn’t seem thrilled to be paying a commission
for their efforts and the boat sat on the market for quite a while. Then
again, it was far from being in “sail away” condition and not everyone wants to
invest the time and money in a 35 year old sail boat to make it serviceable. I
suspect that if the boat had been a mid nineties Boston Whaler 23 Outrage with
a 4 stroke Yamaha, POP Yachts might have been the answer to a quick sale and
pulled in a more qualified customer than say Craigslist or Ebay who are looking
for a free boat or something they can virtually steal for a few thousand. Talk
to a brick and mortar broker sometime and they’ll tell you, the 25 year old
sailboats, maintained by their owners are just not a hot item. And posting an
ad on Yachtworld isn’t cheap by any means.

Caveat emptor, right?

evening, and is actually was POP Yachts with a California number.

Never fails, when you list something for sale, you get more crank calls than
worthwhile calls.

Kevin,

I was contacted by Pop Yachts shortly after listing my boat on another web
site. They seem genuine, but the online reviews I have read haven’t painted a
very good picture. A lot of one start ratings. Evidently they mark the price
up to make their profit, but if you get your bottom line, it seems like an ok
deal. I just haven’t taken their bait yet.

Hey everyone

As you saw I just posted my '82 34 for sale yesterday. Today I got a message
from Pop yachts in FL asking if I would like them to market my vessel and tack
their fee on top of the sale price.

Has anyone has any experience with these guys? Are they reputable? Anything I
should know about them good or bad?

Thanks!

Kevin

Re: Stus-List C 29-2 Topping Lift Setup Question

2018-08-21 Thread David via CnC-List
I find using hold up the boom the main halyard is a simple solution to
eliminating the topping lift and the unsightly boom sag I see on many solid
boom vang supported booms. You can also haul down the main sheet for a stable
boom when grabbed for balance and your boom vang is not in a constant state of
compression (and will eventually stay compressed).

If you have a Boomkicker, get rid of the topping lift completely. One fewer
thing to remember when you set sail.

Before you remove it completely, maybe try moving it to the mast and not using
it for a while to figure out if that works for you. If you remove it (fewer
lines to worry about, less weight aloft), I would suggest running a messenger
line in the mast, so that you could reinstall it, if you decide you want it
back.

Thank you for all of the quick replies.

I assumed there was too much stress as the cheek block is pulling away from the
boom. This was from the previous owner.

I was considering removing it all together since I have a boom kicker but since
it was rigged with both when I got it, I left it on

Maybe a simpler setup like yours Dennis would serve the purpose when I am
moored.

I totally missed the twist in the purchase and the strain you can see through
the eye strap.not sure why it is there. The boat was rigged when I got her
so slowly working through things.

Would be great if you could send pictures of your setup Tom.

Thanks again all

Colin,

First, as a suggestion, it is not the best practice to sail with a wire topping
lift. The wire can abrade the stitches in your main sail necessitating repair.

I use an entirely different configuration on my 35-1 although topping lifts are
fairly generic for older boats. See this pic:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=18pfxqfS8i9ypk1RkMVnbcnruCOZtOjyr

Note the springhook that attaches to the shackle on the end of the boom. I
detach the topping lift and carry it forward to the mast when I use the main
sail. In the photo, the block you see is a small block with a V-cleat. The
upper block, which is not shown, I believe is the same as the upper block on
your lift.

This small purchase is adjustable and, in my opinion, easily removed or
re-attached.

One caveat. Touche' has a rigid boom vang for lifting the boom if needed while
sailing. If you have a rope vang and like to use the topping lift to elevate
the boom while the main is hoisted, Touche's rig is probably not the best for
you. However, you may consider replacing the wire with line.

Ours seems to have been modified at some point and I think the cheek block is
seeing too much strain with this setup.
