Has anyone ever seen this boat?

Two things come to mind that might be negatives, can you see over the

Second, thinking about being healed way over in 20 foot seas and coming down
the companionway ladder on a port tack, that could be challenge and then some.
Maybe that isn’t a thing on Lake Ontario?

OTOH don’t rig it and you have on hell of a Great Loop boat!

My boys are still using Corsair on occasion. But keeping it to sail twice a

David,
We had many of good battles with Corsair when I sailed on Zoomer, another great
C 40. I miss those days. Looking back, it was 15 years since we did our
last Vineyard Round the Island race on Zoomer. Someone told me she’s now in

the Yanmar diesel has been freshly rebuilt with only 30hrs operating time. We

coast sailing doesn't have lots of shallows that perhaps a swing board drop
would be needed for 5ft draft.    She handles well, sails almost as easy as my

most typical cruisers in her class with easy light breezes including the
popular choices such as Catalina 36 or Catalina 38 and can keep up with friends
who have a Catalina 42 on normal passages between the islands we sail to here.
These have a low 93 handicap rating and are nimble for their age. It's a lot of
boat for little money as there are a lot that have had deferred maintenance not
done for sale at bargain prices. We picked ours up in the height of the C19
epidemic for an extreme bargain! Everything in the articles written for

she looks modern go-fast just sitting in her slip 40 years on. Not dated at

draft on ours is 7ft as west coast sailing doesn't have lots of shallows that
perhaps a swing board drop would be needed for 5ft draft.
She handles well, sails almost as easy as my original Cal 20 on short handed
as I learned on as a youngster. She can outrun most typical cruisers in her
class with easy light breezes including the popular choices such as Catalina 36
or Catalina 38 and can keep up with friends who have a Catalina 42 on normal
passages between the islands we sail to here. These have a low 93 handicap
rating and are nimble for their age. It's a lot of boat for little money as
there are a lot that have had deferred maintenance not done for sale at bargain
prices. We picked ours up in the height of the C19 epidemic for an extreme
bargain! Everything in the articles written for Practical and others are pretty
much true. I still think her lines are sexy and she looks modern go-fast just
sitting in her slip 40 years on. Not dated at all. If she had a sugar scoop or
walk through transom, she would look like she's half her age by design lines.
We are happy with what we ended up with though all things considered.

Hello all,   My wife and I own a C 40-2 1980 model that is a retired
successful racer. We use it for cruising around the islands & Baja in Southern
California waters. These were quality boats and still a great deal for what you
get. A 40ft class boat with full interior and galley capabilities very nicely
appointed with wonderful teak wood interior throughout.  I have recently
upgraded the electronics on board again from RayMarine to B Zeus3 chart
plotter and full NEMA 2000 network. The stereo and all navigation systems can
be controlled by smartphone or tablet and the Yanmar diesel has been freshly
rebuilt with only 30hrs operating time. We inherited 9 bags of sails and we
have the tall rig plus extra cutter and baby stays for all kinds of sail
configurations. The draft on ours is 7ft as west coast sailing doesn't have
lots of shallows that perhaps a swing board drop would be needed for 5ft draft.

I tried and failed to buy one in Maine, the boat was gorgeous below but seemed

No deep keels for me anyway, 6 feet would be pushing it for where I am.

I had one and loved her. The only reason I sold her was for Baltic 47 that was
too good to miss.
I sailed my dktr 40 a lot. She was easy to singlehand. I delighted in the fact
that she sailed so well in the lightest breeze and felt sold and fast when the
breeze was on. Splendid boat; comfy to cruise and live aboard for weeks at a
time, with a great galley and roomy saloon and plenty of storage.we did most of
our cruising with just a #3 on the headstay and found it perfectly adequate and
when we went to the 150% genoa we did well in races. I’d buy another in a
heartbeat.

(Example, on the 35s the metal gas tank does a good job of condensing water to
rot the piece of wood it sits on)

Stus-List Re: C 40 rigging

2021-03-26 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I've told this story before, Joe, but here goes.

I had a toggle on one of the D2 shrouds on my 38 break. My rigger said that
Navtech had a recall in the early 2000s on the toggles, and mine was
probably not replaced at that time.

Since I had a bit of a trust issue on rod rigging that was already 33 or 34
years old, I wanted to have it inspected. Maybe reheaded. Navtech indicated
that visual and dye inspections arerelatively worthless, and the proper way
to do it was to have the mast down, rigging coiled up and shipped to them,
and they would xray the heads and rehead or replace as required.

Cost for R the shrouds, shipping, and testing was about $3500 as far as I
can recall. Other work extra.

My rigger turned me on the Dyform wire. The wire is slightly bigger diameter
(a few thousandths), slightly heavier (under a hundred pounds but I can't
recall now - see my former posts), and actually stronger than #10 rod. Swage
on fittings are available to match the existing fittings on the mast and at
the ends of the spreaders. Rigger put Norseman fittings at the chainplate
end of the shrouds to simplify installation (make the wires a little long
and then cut to fit the turnbuckles at the chainplates. All told, the cost
for the complete rerig was 3 or 4 hundred dollars more than the cost for the
inspection alone.

Minuses: the shrouds are a bit larger so more wind resistance, and there is
a bit more weight aloft. Plusses, I have a high degree of confidence in a
rig that is now only 8 years old, and I am essentially a cruiser who does
occasional fun/charity races and probably am capable of screwing up a tack
and losing more time than I would ever gain with a rod rigging. I'm a happy
camper.

YMMV, and of course everything will cost twice as much if you do it in the
Annapolis area as opposed to eastern North Carolina.

Ran into a snag:

The rigging shop I called told me rod rigging from 1981 was NOT going to
pass their survey just from age and some the fittings used back then could
not be inspected, taking them apart is a one-way trip. Does anyone have an
idea on the longevity of rod and the cost to replace it all?

It doesn't have to be rod again, does it? Dynaform wire or Dyneema maybe?

Not sure what you mean by sign off, Joe –

On my last survey, this is about all he said about the standing rigging –

The standing rigging is stainless steel rod and appears in good condition where
observation is possible.

The turnbuckles as well as the chainplates that are integral to the deck all
appear in good condition with

no signs of cracking or stress. The backstay is split and is constructed with
Dyneema and is

reportedly being replaced, as it is original to the vessel, which is the
recommended course of action.

The survey was included with the Insurance application, and they didn’t mention
anything about it.

I would think that is the only higher authority you would need to please.

No way it was antimony. That is an alloying metal. They use it in keels to
give it a little more strength than pure Lead. Most likely it was
stainless, and could have chewed up the threads in the turnbuckle barrel.
Stainless on stainless should be lubed with Tefgel, stainless with bronze
Tefgel is fine, (thaty what I use) but probably any water resistant Grease
works.

I am having the rod rigging on my 1991 34+ inspected and replaced as needed
by “The Rigging Company” in Annapolis. They replaced the lifelines several
years ago and did a good job for a fair price. The mast is down and the
rigging is in their shop now — just got an updated invoice which increased
a little due to some parts which need replacing.

Joe,

It may take some searching to find someone who will work on older rod
rigging but they do exist. Here in the Boston area, North East Rigging out
of Concord MA has this expertise. Call around and hopefully you can find
someone in your area who can do the work. Does it save money in the end vs
going with a newer dyneema solution - I am not sure and it will depend on
what problems the rigger runs into as they go along? Inspection is a
challenge if the rig hasn't been taken apart in a while - last year on my
1981 C a lot of my fittings were seized and could not be inspected so
that did require complete disassembly and reheading all of the rods. One
rod had to be replaced as did the turnbuckles and the fittings on the end
of the spreader. The spreaders ended up being a lot of work and parts
because the threads stripped on a part and no replacement was available.
Replacement parts then required machining the ends of the spreaders. Also
the aluminum through bolts in the mast all had to be replaced which
required custom machining of the ends to accommodate replacement stainless
steel threaded. Including a new wire forestay and harken furler it came to
~$12k for all the parts and labor including setting up and tuning the rig.
The rod rigging does seem to last a long time so I am hopeful that this
will be good to go for many years to come.

2021-03-25 Thread Riley Anderson via CnC-List
FWIW, our 1976 38-ii was partially rerigged in 2013. The previous owner
swapped all of the shrouds for Dyneema and new turnbuckles. The forestay
was replaced with wire before the PO bought it. Probably around the time
the harken furler was installed (my guess is 2003-2006). The backstay is
still rod and I believe it is original. The hydraulic tensioner just failed
last season and I replaced it with a Dyneema cascade using some of
Colligo's Dyneema fittings but the amount of force need to tension it was
insane. This year I'm just putting in a large turnbuckle and a stay
extender. We don't race so it might as well be static.

The Dyneema shrouds are still in excellent shape. They need tuning every
season but it isn't hard to do. Our stays are the heat-set Dyneema which is
pricey but I've always imagined one could build their entire rig from
oversized standard Dyneema and just pay more attention to tensioning it as
it stretches (strength is not the issue, elongation is the problem).
Defender always has cheap offcuts of 12-15mm Dyneema in lengths up to 60'
for dirt cheap (~$35). You have to go into the store to find these,
however, as they don't sell them online.

Best of luck,

In my opinion, this is just a money making scheme. Has anyone ever heard of a
rig failure of rod rigging? My boatyard hasn’t and they were C dealers a
long time ago.

I had mine inspected and some reheaded about five years ago on my 1981 40. We
had to replace the D3/V2 because when it was reheaded the fitting where it went
around the spreader would have been in a different place. I think we replaced
some turnbuckles, too. Just did something similar with my 1995 Baltic two years
ago. I am pretty sure you will not have to replace all the rod. The area to
really look at is the spreader tips and the fittings there.

We are going to put an offer in. They agreed to through in a 10 foot Avon RIB
and outboard for a “strong offer”. Should I even bother with lowballing at this
point? The dinghy and engine would sell for quite a bit unless they are beat to
crap. The outfit selling this boat seems to keep their stuff in top shape, so I
doubt it. It is a 2007 boat with an 8 HP Yamaha. That will probably get swapped

I have no real feel for what old boats sell for now. Sadly it seems a chore to
even give away a C 35, they seem to have aged out of the market.

I did the ICW returning my boat from CRW in 2019.(Charleston to Beaufort+)
While things may have changed for the better now, I found it not a matter of if
I run aground but when and how often:
Ran hard aground in the middle of the channel just north of the last bridge
before Charleston. (The local TowboatUS referred to it as his 'honey hole'.)
Also skimmed the bottom near a few inlets where the official advice is that
because of constant shoaling, tidal currents, etc. the markers are more like
suggestions!
In addition, I misread a local dredge's floating marks (and failed to reach him
on his working channel) and ran hard aground again, waiting ~ 3 hours for the
tide and TowboatUS to float us free.
I was not paying much attention to the local tides but I would be astonished if
an 8 ft draft boat could do this portion of the ICW without running aground
hard and often!
I have done few off-shore runs but after this ICW experience, I am not sure
which would be more nerve-wracking--facing the real ocean or the so-called ICW!

Speaking of C 40's, I was down at our club
today hanging out on Alera, under the winter
cover that still has to come off. As I walked
the docks I saw that there is a 40 there that has
been neglected. I checked and according to the
registration sticker on it, it looks like has not
been used since 2017. I called the club
dock-master and apparently the owner is on notice
to vacate the slip by the end of this month as
the club requires boats to be both properly
maintained and used. This is neither.

I reached out to the owner but have not heard
back yet. Not sure of the year but from the cut
of the ports I suspect it is from the late
80s. If anyone in the PNW or anywhere else with
the will to relocate the boat is interested, I'll
see what the deal is the let everyone know. I
think it would be an awesome deal for
someone. Maybe even a freebee! (Yes Dave, I'm thinking of you and Dave).

times and believe the Brochure.
On the other end, the quoted Bridge clearance is 60'4"' per the brochure. I've
never tested it , but believe it is correct, not allowing for the Windex or the
Wind direction/Wind speed Instrument. The instrumentation  may add another 12
-14'". So, if you believe the corps of Engineers the 65" along most of the ICW

often stated to be 55" , will be a problem!

Don the 41 is a beautiful boat! I looked at one and would have bought, except,
that I was worried about getting under the bridges around my area! My 37 gets a
bit close if the rivers are up and running!

2021-03-21 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
You're right; the numbers for our boats suggest that (although a larger
boat should ride better, the 40 isn't that much larger), so it's probably
just my lack of experience in keeping her balanced, and maybe the bagged
out sails at times. It's hard to tell from a video I guess. We generally
see pretty short steep waves around here, which can really stop the boat,
and sometimes make tacking a challenge. We tend to reef later than we
should since it's all at the mast, and my wife is less confident helming
the boat when the wind picks up. The boat in the video looks like it has
one reef in the main, and is nicely balanced. I will see about improving
our reefing setup while we're in maintenance mode over the next month.

Based on comparison data from the sailing calculator I would say the 35
MKII would perform as good or better than the C 40 in such conditions
considering motion comfort factor, capsize ratio, speed and tracking.
Tracking is a function of balance and I can certainly say that the 35 MKII
tracks remarkably well upwind and rides the waves very well too. Does
anyone else use the resources under technical info on the cncphotoalbum
site to see predicted performance criteria and compare boats.

The auto pilot on Corsair is quadrant mounted and it is amazing. Quartering
10’ seas are not even a problem. Gotta love algorithms.

I'm impressed how well the boat tracks, and that the auto pilot seems to handle
it well - looks like a quadrant driven unit. My wheel pilot certainly wouldn't
cope in those conditions. The stern wake is impressive - they are moving along
well!
