Hi Everyone thanks very much for your suggestions.

Tryfan is a 1985 C and I’m reasonably sure the source of the water
ingress was the toe rail.

The wooden bulkhead is for sure rotten on the RHS, but only about 1/4 of the
entire bulkhead is compromised.

The anchor locker is completely glassed in (heavy duty, solid) and no way to
get to the wooden bulkhead from there. This makes me think that the wooden
bulkhead is nothing more than decorative.

I like the idea of utilizing an oscillating tool (or other?) to cut out the
damaged portion and replace just what was removed, as per Martin and Bruno’s
suggestion.

Then cover with some sort of veneer or paint or both.

I really appreciate all the suggestions though - thanks again!

Andy

Shawn,

An anchor locker on a 35 mk2 ??  My Mk2 has only a open rode locker
forward of the v-berths with a series of limber holes leading aft, no
floor , just the v of the hull at the bow.  Two Danforths anchors  (14 &
25 lb) are carried in the port cockpit locker, not at all convent for
cruising, but good for racing.  There are plastic chocks to hold the 14
lb on the companionway cover for lunch and evening stops.

For repairing Calypso’s plywood bulkheads I used a oscillating tool to “plunge
cut” at a angle (start of a scarf joint) far enough into the good wood to be
sure all the rot was removed.

I improved the scarf joint angle with sanding/grinding equipment. I made a
pattern from cheap plywood and cardboard the allowed me to test the fit and
adjust to allow for any interference in installation of the new piece.

I bonded in the new piece with an epoxy mix that included high density fillers
and milled glass. To hold alignment and climb the scarf joint tight I drilled
holes on both sides (left and right) of the scarf joint, used Mylar sheets to
prevent bonding my clamping boards to the repair then used bolts to drawn the
scarf joint tight.

When possible I added a doubler behind the bulkhead to reinforce the repair.
If that was not possible I added epoxy/glass cloth over the repair area.

I am fortunate that Calypso’s interior has always been finished “Herreshoff”
style, painted white with teak trim. (The white paint allows one to see
mosquitoes them smash the little bastards and clean up quickly.) It was easy
for me to fair out the repair and paint. (Part of my misspent youth included
doing auto body/fender work and painting.)

With a varnished bulkhead that you want to keep varnished adding a door skin or
1/4” teak vernier plywood skin over the part of the bulkhead that shows may
recover much of the original look.

Lots of good info on this thread. I'm not too familiar with the 33-2, but
will share a bit of what was done (by the PO) on my 35-2 which might be
relevant if the water from the anchor locker is a problem (it appears to be
from higher up though). On the 35-2, the original anchor locker appears to
have had a "floor" above the hull. This was cut out to allow the chain to
fall all the way down. The new lower locker was then glassed all the way
around, and a drain pipe glassed in, with a hose running through the
vberth lockers and exiting into the bilge just aft of the mast. This seems
to have worked well at keeping the water where it should be, as I've never

my 135' of chain is a bit lower in the boat, and there is more freefall if
I want to add more chain (previously there was 200'). The original large

of the bulkhead on the port side. The cause of the rot was that there was
no limber hole in the bulkhead so that any water that seeped out of the

I ended up cutting and grinding out the rot and a previous attempt at a
repair. Then I tabbed and glassed in a new piece that was about 1' x 1'.
Dave Syer coached me through the job.

Would recommend that rather than attempting a full bulkhead replacement.

First off, as Dwight mentioned, you need to find out why it is rotting. No
sense in doing anything until you resolve that problem. Then, some pictures
from the other side would be helpful to you. Also, take an ice pick and find
out how rotten the wood is. If this is one of those deals, where they put it
in as the boat was being built, it may be difficult to fit a new piece in
there once you remove what is there. It might not be a bad idea to just
leave it, and sand out all of the rotten stuff, if it is rotten, and just
glass the hell out of it to where it is already tabbed. You're going to have
to do that anyway, so if you just did that, you could just paint a border
around the edge where the glass is and just have white there. Save a little
bit of the mahogany look for the middle if you want to. Or paint the whole
thing white.

Stus-List Re: C Forward "Bulkhead"

2021-05-27 Thread Bruno Lachance via CnC-List
Hi Andy,

Like Dwight said, i would make sure it is no longer structurally sound and
inspect it from the anchor locker side. In doubt you could beef up the
glasswork in the anchor locker as a less intrusive method. Then make sure you
fix the water leaks that could be from the anchor locker, toe rail or deck
harware (water will drop in the liner and migrate to the bulkhead). When
completely dry you could paint the bulkhead cream white and brighten up the
area a bit.

If you really need/want to remove it, this would be a fairly big project.

i see two ways to do it:

no1: cut the rotten part on the perimeter and try to save has much of you can
of the remove pieces to use as a template. cut new plywood pieces, glue them
with thicked epoxy, seal the wood with clear epoxy on the anchor locker side
and add tapered layers of fiberglass to consolidate the puzzle. Redo the
tabbing to the hull and deck from the anchor locker, paint.

Or no2: Cut it all out from the anchor locker and remove the whole bulkhead in
pieces. Obviously the new bulkhead will have to be fit in place from inside,
pretty sure you can unscrew the shelves but even then you probably won't have
the clearance for a panel of the same size as the original. Maybe you could
laminate pieces of wood around the perimeter in thicked epoxy and fit the new
smaller panel inside with a tongue and groove puzzle (actually more like an "L"
with lip forward) + good radius fillet and new glass tabbing from the anchor
locker side. Relying only on the thicked epoxy bed on the cabin side and small
tabbing between the wood pieces. (the hull liner will block acces and limit
your options here. i think i shoud be strong enough and knowing how other areas
of this model is built, there is a good chance anyways that the tabbing from
the cabin side is minimal.

Idon't see other way to do it without major intrusive surgery. Not a boat
builder nor an expert but i have done a lot of projects on my boat and i'm
familiar with composite work.

If it was my boat i would try hard to save it and reinforce the actual bulkhead
from the anchor locker with heavy weight glass and maybe even shape a
transverval or X stringer or use additional plywood or G10 pieces to add
stiffness. seal and paint the wood.

On my 33-2 i had to redo bulkhead tabbings in various areas like other 33-2
owners, have done extensive reinforcement of the keel sump and completely
rebuilt the mast step.
I absolutely love this boat and want to keep it for a long time but honestly
sometimes i am not impressed by the built quality of some areas. i only had
C (29-2 and actual 33-2) so i can't really compare with other manufacturers.
But she is a blast to sail for sure!

Good luck

As Joel said, cut it out. Start in the middle with an adult human head-sized
hole to investigate the sitch. The bulkhead is tabbed to the hull, probably on
the aft side under the liner, maybe both sides, though I doubt it.

Question is, why so much moisture… chain locker yes? With no access hatch? How
old is Tryfan?

Also, I am no expert. I’ve just been cutting out the interior of Inconceivable

Hi Joel

Much less complicated but I replaced the forward bulkhead in 2 J/22s in summer
2019 and documented on a web page. With the 33 I would expect removal of the
pieces surrounding the bulkhead would pose a big challenge. The bulkhead
replacement process would be the same though.

Go to www.hoytsailing.com<http://www.hoytsailing.com> and click on the J22
