Good idea.  A piece of synthetic chamois from an auto store or Walmart
might work as well.

Actually, the wicks I used were plain and uncolored.   However, in the
spirit of extreme vanity, Touche' does have customized red dock lines.  (I
didn't buy them.  They were a gift.)

For the rest of us, I’d like to point out Dennis may have painted his boat red, 
to go with his wick?  

On my “beater boat ” we use a ripped terrycloth rag, works just fine in rainy 
Seattle and looks “natural”, turns green in a week.

I use triangles of cellulose sponge stuck through the toe rail. The points
are far enough outboard that they don't drip down the hull.

While you are re-bedding things, if any of the deck penetrations are
through core, be sure to overbore, clean out any rotted core, fill and then
bed.

If anyone is not familiar with this process, search the archives or just
ask.  Many of us on the list are old hands at re-bedding stuff.

routed in the compartment behind the fuses.  Stupid in my view.

Actually, that's what we have now on our 37XL, they are hidden under the
front outboard edge of the cockpit lockers lids and are teed into the line
that drains the cockpit lockers.

Stus-List Toe Rail Water Drain

I have seen little "spouts" you can buy to keep the water away from the
hull.

Here's the easiest way to keep the black streaks at bay: Keep your deck
clean.  Especially on the 1st couple inches near the toe rail where the
crud accumulates.

Doing that regularly has reduced my black streaks to almost nothing. it
takes 20 minutes to clean the light residue once or twice a month using the
Star Brite black streak cleaner.

On my past C 24 I used a piece of yarn (about 10 cm long) to wick the water 
out. Worked.

Or you can take a leap of faith, and cut a hole in the low spot of your deck, 
and put a little drain in there. I noticed all the newer models had deck drains 
in them, so I popped two in.  I routed the drain hoses back to a T into the 
cockpit drains.

Christian, Water pooling on the side decks is an issue, along with the black 
streaks that seem to radiate from the toe rail.  I have seen others use small 
pieces of sponge or cotton rope to let the water wick over the side.  I would 
certainly try this before cutting into the toe rail.  Give it a shot. Jake

Do not lift or cut toe rail – just asking for trouble and a heck of a lot of 
work to say nothing of messing with the structural integrity of hull deck joint.

 

To drain the puddles, we use a face cloth cut in half and folded over on each 
side put through the low point of the toe rail.  Not all that elegant but very 
functional to wick off the water. Helps a lot to minimize the black streaks

IIRC, at least on my 36 XL, the toe rail bolts also hold the deck to the hull 
at the hull-deck joint. 


I had an old water leak from a collision 15 years ago repaired this past 
summer. The leak was at about 6 ft aft of the bow on the starboard side. The 
fix was to undo the toe rail and bolts from the bow aft to about 1/2 way to the 
stern. The hull deck joint was then pried open to remove the old sealant at the 
joint and re bed it for a length of about 2 feet. This was a 2 man operation on 
the hard done by yard personnel and it only involved opening the rail 1/2 way 
aft on one side--about 80 yard hours!


Thus re bedding the entire rail would be a formidable job requiring 2 persons. 
Further, in the process you may open up a leak where there is none now and not 
realize it until the rail is back in place. 


A simple sponge or 'wick' would do the trick without disturbing the toe rail 
and/or the hull deck joint.

Don't do it.  Don't rebed it.  Don't cut it.

I use pieces of cotton oil lamp wick to wick the water over the side.
Minimizes the puddle and minimizes the streaks down the topsides.

Try that first and see if it works for you.  Won't completely eliminate the
issue but should reduce it quite a bit.

As far as rebedding the toe rail, that's quite a job.  I just run a few
beads of Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure down the toe rail/deck
interface each spring.  Stops leaks.  Takes just a few miniutes per bead
application.
