Stus-List Selden sprit kit install

2015-10-29 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
Two years ago I purchased the Selden sprit at the Annapolis Boat Show. It sat
in my basement for the winter and in the spring I tried to install the sprit to
no avail. The problem was the anchor roller alignment and the bow cleats did
not allow the sprit to fit under the furling roller. I returned it and received
a full refund, my only cost was the shipping cost to return it.

I race my 36 and fly an asymmetrical and have done very well with the chute. We
have learned how to gybe it and when the air is light from the stern we heel
the boat and wing to wing the sail. The trimmer and I (I steer) need to work
together very closely. JSI out of Florida made the sail and I can point fairly
well, when on a beam reach she flies - no one can touch me.

Stus-List Fuel vent option

There is a product on the market that solves the fuel vent line from taking on

Stus-List Looking at a second boat - must be out of my mind

2016-02-05 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List

Joel,

The Hylas 44 is a great sailboat, I did not own one - a friend did. I had
purchased a new Hylas 47 in 1989 and sailed her to St Thomas from Ft Lauderdale
to join the CYC fleet which was all Hylases. I met and became friends with
another Tom and he had a new Hylas 44. We did some sailing together over the 5
years of the program at CYC. The 44 would stay with me in every condition of
sailing in the US Virgins and the BVI. I sailed my Hylas 47 to Annapolis in
1993 and kept her in the area for another 5 years. Joel, we met a few years
ago when I raced my C&C 36 Frolic II from the Magothy to your club, you were
the race chairman. I think you will find the Hylas 44 to be a great sailboat,
the size will spoil you and the Admiral.

Stus-List Cushions smell

2016-02-25 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
I have an odor of diesel in all of my cushions. It is not a strong smell, when
you first go below it is more revelent - after you are there for awhile it is
not as bad. If anyone has had a similar problem and solved the issue, I would
love to know how. Obviously, a total replacement would work. The Admiral
refuses to sleep on the boat because of the odor. I have taken the cushions off
for the winter and steam cleaned one and sprayed it with Fabreeze, not much
different.

Stus-List portable generator on sale at harbor freight

2016-02-28 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
I looked at it yesterday at my local Harbor Freight and decided not to
purchase. One of the big factors for me was the weight, just under 70 lbs. That
is too much for me to put in a locker and get out. The price is right
considering the comparable Honda is $999.00.

Stus-List Frolic II 36' cb will be for sale soon

2016-03-25 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
After some great years of sailing and racing I have decided the 36' C&C is a
little too much for this older body. I regret to say that Frolic II will be for
sale very soon. I am looking at a smaller sailboat and like the Alerion 28 and
the Harbor 25, both have some good pedigree.

I will talking to a broker tomorrow about a listing, in the meantime, if you
know of anyone that would like to discuss the sale with me, feel free to email
me at tvince...@msn.com or call 302-540-2078.

Stus-List Stanchion support problem

2015-08-13 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
Not paying attention this past Monday I hit the piling at the fuel dock with
the stanchion on the starboard side that is used as part of the gate. The
stanchion was not damaged, the stainless steel support was bent and I am trying
to figure out if I should try bending it back or replace it. The tube is 2'
long, 1/2" outside diamater, and 3/8" inside diamater. Also, the cast aluminum
bracket that holds the stanchion to the toe rail is cracked.

Any suggestions where either piece can be located ?

Stus-List Too cold to email

2015-01-09 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
Kevin,

Were you a Navy Seal? No one in their right mind would go for sail in the
conditions you described.

When the temperatures get as low as everyone is describing, you want to be home
either reading a book or watching a movie- maybe taking care of the children's
mother.

I am going to the marina tomorrow to check out Frolic II, she is in the water
and the temperatures on the Upper Chesapeake have been in the teens at night.

Stus-List The stern squats at high speed

the stern is way down. I have a martec 18'' folding prop and I do not know the

Stus-List Where is my old 30' C&C now

2015-01-20 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
I was wondering where my original C&C 30' is now. I purchased her in
1975, brand new, from Havre de Grace Marina in Maryland. What a beauty,
chocolate brown hull with a cameo deck. It had the Atomic 4 engine
that ran like a dream. I had never sailed in my life when I purchased
her and Arvid, the marina owner, took me out several times to show me
what everything was for. Needless to say I have been hooked ever sense.
Fusty, the name I gave her, was the 30 footer that C&C had at the
boat show that year in either Montreal or Toronto. She was totally
decked out with all the goodies because of the show. I sailed her on the
upper Chesapeake the first year and gradually started sailing with a
larger head sail, she came with a 110, 135, and 170 headsail. Not
knowing anything I started with the 110 and worked my way up to the 170.
I loved the thought of racing and during the first winter on the hard I
had spinnaker gear installed, B&G hornet series gauges, and had a
spinnaker and tallboy made at Concord Point Sail maker. Unfortunately, I
can not find any info with the hull number and the marina has changed
ownership and they have no record. Is there a way to find Fusty now?

Stus-List Leak in Fuel Tank

2016-05-03 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
Two years ago I had the aluminum fuel tank replaced with a fiberglass tank. I
started noticing the smell of diesel the year before, the Admiral noticed it
more than me. The bilge area under the engine started showing signs of diesel
and it got worst over time. The aluminum tank was pulled by the marina mechanic
and it was decided it was beyond repair. It was like the tank had cancer on the
bottom, a lot of little pin holes - especially in the areas of the tank that
sat on the wooden frame that was holding the tank in place. The odor of diesel
is the most difficult smell to eliminate, I run an ionizer 24/7 when the boat
is in the slip.

Stus-List Assymetrical spinnaker pole

2016-06-17 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
I race on Wednesday nights on the Bohemia River in Maryland and lately the race
committee has been doing a better job having a windward start and a down wind
leg. Unfortunately, I use an assymetrical spinnaker which does very poorly dead
down wind, even gybing has not helped. One of my crew was wondering if we used
a regular spinnaker pole, if it would help us down wind. I was wondering if
anyone on the forum has any experience using a pole with an assymetrical
spinnaker.

Stus-List Transmission/prop woes

2016-07-01 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
It seems this is the year for the shaft to remove itself from the coupler. I
race on Wednesday nights on the Bohemia River and 4 weeks ago I had decided to
go out early and warm up a little. I had to return to the fuel dock to pick up
one crew member. I was adjacent of the pier and he hopped aboard, I slid the
gear shift lever down, this puts the trans in forward, and nothing. We were
slowly moving forward to the rock pile jetty at the end of the fuel dock and I
start shouting for the crew to raise the main and get our butts away from the
rocks. The wind was blowing abeam and it was impossible to raise the main, one
crew member quickly unfurls about 10' of the genoa and we develop enough
forward motion to provide me steerage. We barely missed ending up on the rocks.
I had the marina haul the boat and they replaced the coupler and many boat
dollars later, I am back sailing.

Stus-List Possible upgrade to a C&C 36 cb

2016-08-27 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
This has been an interesting topic to follow for several days as I have owned
and raced a C&C 30 and now own and race a C&C 36 cb. I bought the 30' new in
1975 and raced her on the upper Chesapeake Bay in the Columbia Sailing Assoc.
(CSA). I had a 160 genoa, deck sweeper, and could carry it in breezes up to the
high teens. It was a hanked on sail, which was a pain to reduce to the 135. My
36' cb is more tender with a 150 and we need to reef the main or furl in the
genoa some (luff tape) when the wind goes in the mid teens. I can still out
point the fleet with the 150 and the center board is always up as I race on the
Bohemia River which is very shallow.
