[cobirds] Re: 1st Winter Harris's Sparrow, Fountain Creek Nature Center/Regional Park, El Paso County

2010-11-26 Thread Bill Evans
This morning at 10:45 I saw the 1st Winter Harris's Sparrow in the
same reported area. Alas, the Tundra Swans are gone from Big Johnson.

On Nov 25, 6:37 am, birdingspace...@aol.com wrote:
 November 25, 2010

Following an early closing at the office yesterday, I spent two hours at
Fountain Creek Nature Center Regional Park enjoying the outdoors. While
watching a mixed flock of White-crowned Sparrows, a few Song Sparrows and
Juncoes, I saw a sparrow I had never seen before. What struck me was the
whiteness of the underside, the brownish head and the distinct black triangle
on the front. I watched and watched and compared to my Sibley's. Then, upon
getting home checked other field guides and photos on line. I've thought and
thought and I truly believe this was a 1st Winter Harris's Sparrow. It was
found in a very birdy section of the park (for yesterday): if you are heading
south on the Regional trail, where it splits at the waterfall of Fountain
Creek - if you go right you continue to head south on the Regional trail; if
you go left you pass through a gateway into the Nature Center area, where the
pond comes right up to the shoreline. There is a small pavilion there with
bike racks. This sparrow, with the others, was working the ground area near
the bike racks. I spent about 10 to 15 minutes watching all these little
birds, comparing the new one with the ones that I recognized.

This particular part of the park was birdy yesterday - downy woodpecker,
 black-capped chickadees, a brown creeper (which I watched for a while -
amazing how beautiful a little brown bird can be and how well it matches the
bark of the trees it forages on!), juncoes (slate-colored and oregon) and
white crowned sparrows. The ponds and creek offered a lot of waterfowl -
Canada geese, green winged teal, wood ducks, hooded mergansers, gadwalls,
lots of mallards (the males looking very handsome). Also a couple of belted
kingfishers and two great blue herons. I loved watching the hooded mergansers
 - one small group of about six or seven birds dove in unison and ended up
popping up between a pair of gadwalls who looked a little surprises to have
these little guys popping up out of the water.

Then, as I posted yesterday, after stopping for a hot chocolate at the
Starbucks in the Safeway at Fountain I swung by Big Johnson Reservoir and saw
five swans. Nick Moore replied to me and said he saw the swans at about 2:00
p.m. yesterday and said they were Tundra Swans. There were other ducks out
there but I could not id them.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!

This morning I saw and photographed an adult Harris's Sparrow at the Fawnbrook

also had six male Evening Grosbeaks, but no Rosy-finches after almost two hours
of watching.

[cobirds] Huerfano County: Bonaparte's Gull, Eastern Bluebirds

2010-11-26 Thread Polly Neldner
What a difference a day makes!

Went up the La Veta Town Lakes and out to Lathrop State Park...such a
beautiful morning, warm, no wind but what a difference a day makes:
Swans, Ross's Geese and Snow Geese are all gone...along with the great
variety of ducks we have been seeing and the Clark's and Western Grebes

At Martin Lake , Lathrop State Park:
Common Loons and both Surf Scoters were present
Eastern Bluebirds (more than 2 dozen)
Bonaparte's Gulls (first winter) were also seen

[cobirds] bald eagles, Stearn's Lake, Boulder County

2010-11-26 Thread R Carol Cushman
The pair of wintering bald eagles have returned to Stearn's Lake. A
nice couple pointed them out this morning said the eagles returned
2 days ago. Also saw a prairie falcon, red-tailed hawk, tons of
Canada geese shovelers.

One of the things I was thankful for on Thanksgiving was the swan
that flew low overhead late Wednesday afternoon as I walked down the
drive to our home on Arapahoe Road in East Boulder. A little later I
saw it on Teller Lake along with hundreds of Canada geese one snow
goose. By Thanksgiving morning the lake was frozen the swan (too
far away to tell whether it was a tundra or trumpeter) was gone.
Maybe it was the tundra swan that Peter Gent spotted at Valmont
Reservoir??

[cobirds] Union and Ish Reservoirs

2010-11-26 Thread PETER GENT

All,

In addition to the 8 Sandhill Cranes flying over, there was an
immature Tundra Swan at Ish Res in very northern Boulder Co.
Earlier, Elena Klaver and I found a first-year Long-tailed Duck
in the south part of Union Res, Weld Co which is NE of Longmont,

Cheers, Peter Gent.

[cobirds] Re: Ross's Gull

2010-11-26 Thread Mary France
On 11/25 around 2 PM, Tom and Mary France found the Ross's Gull on the
south side of the lake - directly opposite the dam. We parked in a semi-circle
area near a sign saying Wetlands Preserve, walked directly north on a trail
that led to a Bird Watching Observation Area on the water. The bird was still
a ways out there fishing with a Bonaparte's Gull. Thanks to all who have
reported it!

[cobirds] Ross's Gull, morning Yes - afternoon No

2010-11-26 Thread Glenn Walbek
Folks,

I arrived at the Prairie Loop this morning around 9:45. The Ross's Gull was
close to shore, straight out from the bird observation area. Close to shore is
relative, since there is now a 50 ft. wide ice shelf on the south side. I
watched the bird for a couple of minutes as it circled low and flew east along
the shoreline. I stayed on the south shore for the next 3 hours, along with
several other birders. The Ross's Gull was not seen. I spoke to Jim Beatty
who stayed at Cherry Creek until dark, and as far as we know the bird had not
been re-found.

[cobirds] Ross's Gull early this morning

2010-11-26 Thread melgoff

Jeanne and I found the Ross's Gull at the sand spit on the west end of the
reservoir at 8:00am this morning.  We watched it work the spit for almost 30
minutes and as people began to arrive the gull took off following the north
shore.

It was a great site, and we thank all those who have reported it and those that
encouraged us to go. It seems early is the most reliable time to see this gull.

While this was a life bird for us, we also picked up a Colorado life bird when
we saw the Golden-crowned Sparrow at the Red Rocks Trading Post.

Good birding,

Mel and Jeanne Goff

[cobirds] Boulder and Larimer County Black Friday Birding

2010-11-26 Thread William H Kaempfer
After winding up our shopping this morning, 15 front rangers gathered to look
for some of the best birds in Larimer, Weld and Boulder Counties. We gathered
at Jim Hamm where a search turned up White-crowned and American Tree Sparrows.
We crossed the county line for a tour of the edge of Union Reservoir (Weld) to
find a first year Thayer's and one or two Bonaparte's among the gulls as well
as the first year Long-tailed Duck previously reported by Peter Gent tucked
back in the SW corner. We also saw a distant blue-phase Snow Goose on the far
side of the reservoir.

Then we set off on what I was pretty sure would be a wild-owl chase, going all
the way up to Rist Canyon to some hazily described spot (Whale Rock) to look
for a sure to be long-gone Northern Pygmy Owl. After a long ride from Union
including a stop with at a convenience store with suspect coffee and
insufficiently provided rest facilities, we found Rist Canyon. Now we began
scouring the canyon walls for some rock formation that looked like a whale to
somebody. Every time we found a wide spot in the road, all five of our cars
would stop and as we began to examine the hillsides, other cars transversing
the canyon would slow down until they discovered that what we were looking at
was only something like a Clark's Nutcracker, not a Mountain Lion or Big Horned
Sheep.

We continued to creep up the canyon when what to our wondering eyes should
appear but a big rock by the side of the road painted to look like a blue whale
(quickly followed by a sign for Whale Rock Road no less). So we had found the
first part of our Rist Canyon Holy Grail-Whale Rock, but still the likelihood
of a Northern Pygmy Owl being in the vicinity and detectible was not what you
would describe as a whale of a chance. Again we decarred (for no good reason
in the eyes of all of the Christmas-tree transporting cars coming down the
canyon). Connie Steinkamp picked out a Three-toed Woodpecker in the trees, but
I missed it because, alas, as we all rushed forward to try to see it out
flushed a (you guessed it) Northern Pygmy Owl which flew to a nearby
narrow-leaf cottonwood and scowled at us for about 10 wonderful minutes before
some diesel pick-up coming up the canyon convinced the owl that it had better
things to do.

So we were a long way from home, still hadn't had our lunch and wanted more
birds-what to do? We headed back to LaPorte, then down Taft Hill. Grandview
Cemetery was certainly a siren, but Dave Leatherman hadn't reported
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers recently enough for us to give it a try and we went
all the way to Flatiron Reservoir for our lunch. Next we went up and over the
Carter Lake Road to get to the mysterious Dry Creek Reservoir which didn't
disappoint. Totally open (due to the warm, down-sloping water of the
Colorado-Big Thompson project) it was full of birds. Even though we had seen
many of the species before, it did rewarded us with a scoter. We watched it a
long time before it spread its wings to dive under the surface and clinched the
i-d that it was in fact Nick's Surf not Cole's (earlier) White-winged.

Light was at a premium, so we hustled our way all the way back to Boulder and
the Legion Park overlook at Valmont. There, at the exact spot where it had
held court for the past 24+ hours was a Tundra Swan, and there was enough light
to pick out an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in the growing gull flock at dusk
(come along on gullapalozza with Ted Floyd and the gang at Valmont starting at
12:00 noon on January 8, 2011).

All in all, a great but not unexpected late November day in the northern front
range: six gull species, two unusual diving ducks, a swan, three geese species,
a Three-toed Woodpecker and a Northern Pygmy Owl as part of our 60+ species.
Oh, and did I mention that there was a super rare gull about 40 miles to the
south?

[cobirds] Sapsucker spectacular in Canon City

2010-11-26 Thread SeEtta Moss
I had an astonishing day today--I saw 20 sapsuckers in/near Canon City in 3
hours of birding! Following is the tally:

   - Lakeside Cemetery: 5 male and 3 female Williamson's Sapsucker

   - Rouse Park: 2 male Williamson's Sapsuckers

   - Centennial Park: 2 female Williamson's Sapsuckers

   - Canon City School Admin: 1 female Williamson's Sapsucker

   - The Abbey: 2 female Williamson's and 1 male Red-naped Sapsucker

   - Just outside Canon City: 1 male and 3 female Williamson's Sapsuckers

The latter location is the one I have previously posted on that is near
Canon City where I have observed 1 male and 1 female Williamson's in the
non-native (siberian-like) elms. There are only 2 elm trees, both with
multiple trunks (but less than 20 feet tall), in a dry wash in which these
sapsuckers are feeding so as I watched 4 sapsuckers appear in these trees it
was as though there was a magician who was pulling sapsuckers (instead of
rabbits) out of his hat and releasing them into these trees. Needless to
say there was not enough 'tree' for these pretty territorial birds so they
spent a lot of time chasing each other away from their favorite sap wells
and occasionally off the trees and into the surrounding pinyon-juniper
habitat.

This is far more than have ever been seen in and just outside of Canon City
before. And I didn't even get to check some of the secondary locations that
are on private property and where I have seen fresh sap wells. So I believe
there are more than 20 sapsuckers here at this time.

This causes me to wonder why the explosion of sapsuckers this year. One
thought is that this is actually a late migration and for some unknown
reason they decided to stop-over here. Another thought is that this may be
an indication that at least Williamson's Sapsuckers are wintering a
significant distance north of their usual wintering area like many other
birds documented in *2010 U.S. State of the Birds Report *(yes, we need to
see if they stay for the winter and if this is repeated in future years).

I have uploaded some photos I took today of a few of these sapsuckers and
will add more later to my

[cobirds] Other Canon City area birds today

2010-11-26 Thread SeEtta Moss
While watching one of the male Williamson's Sapsuckers in Rouse Park today I
heard Red-breasted Nuthatch calls and saw 2 of this species, that are pretty
uncommon in Canon City, in some blue spruce trees.

In the two very busy elm trees near Canon City where there were 3 female and
1 male Williamson's Sapsuckers today, 2 Juniper Titmice and several Mountain
Chickadees took advantage of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of fresh sap
wells. If that wasn't more birds than these trees should have to host, 2
Townsend's Solitaires that apparently didn't want to miss the party stopped
in for a brief time.

The Pacific Loon was still at Brush Hollow Reservoir. During the short time
I watched it, the loon appeared to be swimming away from the two motorized
fishing boats and avoiding the several groups of fishermen on the shore.
The Common Goldeneye that I saw there yesterday had left.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I saw one-two Sage Thrashers a few miles
from Brush Hollow Reservoir in semi-arid juniper-grassland-cholla habitat.
