[cobirds] burning question about the CBCs
Dear Cobirders CBC participants: There is something that I and my cohorts (leading teams for upcoming CBC in Boulder) have been wondering about. Since the National Audubon Society allows for (I believe) a two-week window for getting the counts done, is the data good no matter when we turn it in during those two weeks? Because a weather event (like the one that may occur on Sunday) can skew all the data for the season if THAT DAY ONLY carries data weight, but not the count-week data also. This makes no sense to me whatever. We looked it up on Audubon FAQ and the answer was not very helpful. It said that count week data birds would be categorized as cw. OK--but does that mean that they are as meaningful as what we gather on our chosen local day, or not? I know it's fun to gather data all together on a given day, and to make a bit of a contest out of it, but speaking statistically, the two week spread data ought to be of equal significance, IMHO. What do the rest of you know/think about this? [cobirds] Costa' Hummingbird - GJ - Mesa County

[cobirds] Higbee Canyon Rd (804) (Otero) on 12/11
I tried to do some research and photo work for a future The Hungry Bird column today at Higbee Canyon south of LaJunta. Taking a cue from David Dowell's recent post from this area, I was trying to locate Ladder-backed Woodpeckers in cholla cactus. I did not. However, I did see: Cassin's Finch (1m, 1f) along the road eating wild sunflowers Mountain Bluebird (a few 100) in sunflower, on rabbitbrush, flycatching from wires, going to the ground Northern Shrike (2) Loggerhead Shrike (1) Curve-billed Thrasher (2) Canyon Towhee (5) Canyon Wren (heard) on the big rocky bluff to the north of the road Say's Phoebe (1, maybe 2) Pine Siskin (8) in sunflowers Western Scrub-Jay (2) foraging within pinyon pine crowns in the cemetery no Rufous-crowned Sparrows no Greater Roadrunners (probably entrenched near the homes and ranch buildings) no Ladder-backed Woodpeckers no Wild Turkeys Total of 25 spp. If anyone knows of an area where they see ladderbacks foraging in cholla consistently, I would appreciate knowing the specific location. Ideally, what I need is a specific part of a specific plant being worked on by a woodpecker that flies away at my approach for the purpose of doing an autopsy on the plant. Second best would be an area where the woodpeckers have been foraging in recent days. Examination of either type of situation would require permission from the landowner, of course, which I am certainly willing to pursue. Thank you. Re: [cobirds] burning question about the CBCs
The CBC data must be from the calendar date selected as the count day (i.e., only one 24 hour day). The Audubon Soc. gives a broader window in which to select a single date for the count. The only thing that counts outside the selected date are additional species (not numbers of individuals) found in count week but missed on count day, but these are tallied additionally as count week birds beyond the total form count day. Count week extends for 3 days on both side of the count day. Weather certainly does affect results, but these things balance out over the long run of counts conducted in a circle over many years. [cobirds] Rare bird resource at CFO
Hello birders, Here is a tip, in case you didn't know. Say you read Steve Mlodinow’s post yesterday afternoon about his great find of a Yellow-billed Loon at Boyd Lake State Park. My reaction was, “Hmm. That sounds like a rare bird. I wonder how rare? - Go to cobirds.org - Click on Colorado Bird Records Committee - Click on Reports from the data - Click on Reports by species - Type in Yellow-billed Loon, and there you have it: only 25 approved records since 1944, the most recent 6/29/2010 in Gunnison County. That’s rare. Click on the camera icons to see photos. Click here. http://coloradobirdrecords.org/Reports/SpeciesDetail.aspx?id=59 Isn’t that neat? Thanks to volunteer Rachel Hopper, to CFO’s contractor Ann Johnson, and to many other CBRC volunteers over the years for this great resource. You can support this by joining CFO or renewing your membership. Barb and I enjoyed seeing the YP Loon this morning here on the map: Click here https://goo.gl/maps/dmdu2. Hope it sticks around and you have a chance to see it. To learn more about a Colorado rarity, I often check the species out at Wikipedia, and also at Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Here is a beautiful little video about the YP Loon on its arctic breeding ground: Click here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyRTu-VJM1Q. What a great bird! Thanks to Steve and all the generous birders who share their sightings with us at COBirds. [cobirds] Yellow-breasted Chat, Carbondale Garfield Cty
Hi all Whilst birding with Al Levantin today, Thursday, we found an unseasonal Yellow-breasted Chat at the Ranch at Roaring Fork, Carbondale. Photo and video obtained. Other species present included at least 9 Barrow's Goldeneyes. Teaming up with Tom McConnell and Linda Vidal we birded Rifle Gap reservoir (still 99% ice-free) where the highlight was two Black Scoters. [cobirds] Summit County birding
While skiing at Keystone this morning as well as some dedicated birding in the afternoon, I had a nice “Corvid” day seeing 6 species: Am. Crow, Common Raven, Clark’s Nutcracker, Gray Jay, Stellar’s Jay and Black-billed Magpie. In the Wildernest area, there were good numbers of Pine Grosbeak, Pygmy Nuthatch and Mountain Chickadees. At the Blue River water treatment plant there were 4 species of duck along with an American Coot. There was a single female Common Goldeneye but no Barrow’s, at least in the ~3 p.m. time frame. Full reports by location have been submitted to eBird. Charlie Nims Silverthorne\Bartlett, NH -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
