[cobirds] Red-eyed Vireo - Barr Lake - Adams County

2016-05-21 Thread Robert Martinez
After a long morning of birding Weld County my wife and I decided to visit
Barr Lake to see the Barn Owls, (we did), on our way back to the visitor
Center we happened upon a small group of birders looking at a Vireo in the
trees by the shore, looked with them and found a foraging Red-eyed Vireo
about 30 feet above the path. nice look at the stripe on his face and then
he turned into the sunlight and there it was a definite red -eye.

[cobirds] Bobolink west of Walden, Jackson

2016-05-21 Thread Charles Hundertmark
Late afternoon a singing Bobolink gave several nice looks just west of Walden.
The bird was on a fence along the dirt road that heads north beside the caboose
west of town. It was roughly 1/4 mile from the highway.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 5/21/16

2016-05-21 Thread meredith . mcburney
Today seemed to mark the beginning of real activity among Yellow Warblers -
We banded 6 new, caught 3 from prior years, caught another 6 banded earlier
this season. In several instances, we caught a male and female side by side
in the net. Our "best bird" of the day was a female American Redstart, a
species that we believe breeds at Chatfield but we rarely catch. Here's
the breakdown on the 22 new and 3 returns:

House Wren 3
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 3
Yellow Warbler 6 new, 3 returns (2 banded 2015, 1 in 2014)
American Redstart 1
Common Yellowthroat 3
Wilson's Warbler 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 2
Spotted Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 30. It is
almost always better to visit early in the morning. We are opening nets at
6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. There are
school groups every weekday, arriving about 9:45. We aim to close by noon
most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy.

Re: [cobirds] White-eyed Vireo Arap Cty Continues

2016-05-21 Thread Jared Del Rosso
I heard the vireo around 11:45, while walking my dog at deKoevend. There
was also an Olive-sided Flycatcher, a Western Wood-Pewee, and a Western
Kingbird farther northwest on the trail.

While watching the vireo, it went silent while two boys adventured off
trail, near the canal. I hung around for fifteen minutes after they left
and didn't hear the bird. The vireo has hung around the same 20 or so yards
along the canal for several days now, even as the town has mowed the grass
between the trail and canal -- and despite the regular activity at the
park. So hopefully it hasn't been scared off. If you go looking for the
bird this afternoon or evening, it'd be great to know if it is still
around.

[cobirds] White-eyed Vireo Arap Cty Continues

2016-05-21 Thread Steve Stachowiak
Cobirders,

The vireo is currently along the creek that flows through the park. The most
expeditious way to see the bird is to park at the Littleton ice rink. Cross the
footbridge to the park and take an immediate left along the highlight canal
trail heading north. Proceed approximately 1K to where there is an orange fence
along the trail. Make a 90° turn down the hill to the creek and that is where
the bird was a few minutes ago. It is singing sporadically.

[cobirds] Alder Flycatcher - Loveland, Larimer Co

2016-05-21 Thread David Wade
Greetings Birders,

I am sheepishly reporting that I saw and heard an Alder Flycatcher at the
Morrey Wildlife Reserve in Loveland today. Sheepishly because I didn't
realize I was looking at one when it happened. I spotted a flycatcher with
a white throat, moderate primary projection and the general shape, size,
and color of a Trails Flycatcher. Because Willow is the expected one here
in N Colorado, that's what I thought it was. Then, as I was looking at it
thru the bino's it belted out a little chippy brri sound. I thought it
sounded like a miniature Robin. Despite seeing it not give the wit call of
a Willow, that's what I thought it was and moved on in my merry birding
way. It wasn't until I saw a Dusky Flycatcher and it reminded me that
Willow gives a wit call and not the brri that I heard. I quickly returned
to where I saw it but couldn't relocate it. I checked xenocanto when I got
home and confirmed the Alder's call there. It was in the understory of a
group of large cottonwoods directly west of the putting green of the
nearby golf course.

In Fort Collins, I saw a Bobolink at Reservoir Ridge Natural Area today
too. This marks the third year in a row that I have seen them there.
