Christian-
How come the Tuesday sighting e-bird report never up on the daily e-bird
reports? I even went back and could only find it by searching by bird name,
not by date?

I’d just like to know how the RBA can get info out faster to public.

Thx,

[cobirds] Blackpoll Warbler, Great Crested Flycatcher @ Fountain Creek (El Paso)

2019-05-09 Thread Sam Fason
Hey y'all,

Lots of activity at Fountain Creek Regional Park this afternoon despite the
snowy weather. Highlights were a male Blackpoll Warbler and Great Crested
Flycatcher, both on the west side of the pond adjacent to the Nature Center.
The Blackpoll was in the large cottonwoods near the small footbridge south of
the pond, and the Great Crested was working the open field foraging from
locoweed stalks. Was unable to get a shot of the Blackpoll but photographed the
Great Crested. Tons of Yellow-rumped Warblers, several Virginia's and
Orange-crowned Warblers, three Yellow Warblers, a Wilsons Warbler, and FOS
Plumbeous Vireo, Warbling Vireos, and Western Wood-Pewee rounded out a very
birdy few hours. Also had a Bobcat being scolded by the Great Horned Owls
nesting just south of the Nature Center.

Cheers,
Sam Fason

[cobirds] Empid ID Help

2019-05-09 Thread Reed Gorner
Hi all,

I found this flycatcher at Main Reservoir in Lakewood around 12:00. It
strikes me as a Willow Flycatcher because of the brownish back and thin eye
ring along with the pale sides. I am also considering Alder Flycatcher as a
possibility because of the thin bill and prominent wingbars even though it
would be quite rare in the area. I tentatively ruled out Hammonds
Flycatcher because of the brown, not grayish, head. If anyone has any ideas
on the identification of this flycatcher it would be very helpful.

Thanks, Reed Gorner

[cobirds] Holly rest area and Lamar (Prowers) 5/9

2019-05-09 Thread snowy.owlets
Hi Everyone, I took a week and some to drive from Longmont to Ohio and back to
catch a swath of migration. I'm now back in Colorado. I entered at Holly and
stopped at the rest area. It was cold, windy, and rainy, but there were some
birds about, notably four Harris's Sparrows in different flocks. Someone has
put out bird seed, and many sparrows came out to feed. One of the Harris's
Sparrows sang while he ate. (So, yes, he sounded the way you'd expect if you
sing with food in your mouth.) I then drove to Lamar Community College, where I
ran into Duane Nelson. Between the two of us, we found Worm-eating Warbler,
Northern Waterthrush, Yellow-throated Vireo, Gray Catbird, and Least
Flycatcher. Later, I ran into the Teutons, and we found a Plumbeous Vireo with
yellow-rumps. I heard a Veery, but did not see it. Mark Miller Longmont, CO

I finally found it on the east side of the gravel pit pond just south of
the parking lot at about 3:00 PM. Clear Creek Valley Park is a new location
for me. It is bordered on the south side by I 76 and is kind of tricky to
locate. 58th and Tennyson on the east side of Tennyson. Also 10 avocet, one
willet, half a dozen Spotted Sandpipers, an assortment of Anatidae, and
about 25 grounded Cliff Swallows on a very cold day (38). And one wet
bedraggled fox on the I 76 side. Urban no-mans-land wildlife!

[cobirds] songbirds central Bldr Cnty, incl. Harris's Sparrow rehearsing

2019-05-09 Thread Linda Andes-Georges
The yard, probably like everyone's, has been popping with visitors and new
residents all week. I've posted a few FOS's, but since the Oregon weather
arrived, it has gotten really interesting.

Yesterday I had two Harris's Sparrows, one of which was singing so loudly, and
so badly, that I almost held my ears. By badly, I mean it was singing its
typical song but emphasizing all the flats and sharps in a most 21st century
way, none of that harmonics, thank you. And did I say LOUD? Today there were at
least two others--and I know they were others because at least one of them was
doing the complex song more often than the simpleflat-and-sharp whistle notes
on a single pitch. And the song was so weird that I went to XenoCanto to make
sure it was not a Great-tailed Grackle trying to fool me.

A short while ago, two beautiful male Bullock's Orioles began mixing it up with
the flocks of other rabble (RW Blackbirds, CO Grackles, lots of WC Sparrows,
and 3 or 4 GT Towhees) outside my office, and were soon joined by a female. A
Black-chinned Hummer has been sputtering around the yard for 3 days; I'm daring
to hope it will stay and breed.

I wish some of those uncommon sparrows would show up so I could practice IDs on
them. An Ovenbird would be super: Not on the yardlist! Thanks for all the news,
everybody.

[cobirds] Hooded Warbler in Crowley County 5/9

2019-05-09 Thread Brandon
I birded Olney Springs SWA, in Crowley County starting at 11:57am, for 41
minutes. It wasn't raining, like it was most of the way from Lamar to
there. The dirt road off the canal into where you park, was certainly
muddy (which I think most dirt roads are in SE Colorado today). I didn't
visit any of them today, since I figured they might be too muddy to get
to. Hopefully they will dry up for the weekend birders.

The highlights from at Olney Springs SWA today, including a male *Hooded
Warbler* (first heard chipping, then seen well), also Broad-winged Hawk,
Barn Owl, a Violet-green Swallow, singing Plumbeous Vireo, Western
Wood-Pewee, single Virginia's and Wilson's Warblers, and many
Yellow-rumped, Orange-crowned, and Yellow Warblers. A pretty good stop,
for the trip home.

I ended with 21 species of warblers in SE Colorado (May 2-9). Happy to be
home, after a fun trip, birding with many friends from around Colorado.
Thanks to the local Lamar and SE Colorado birders, and all other birders
for all their help! It was fun to see many great birds. Certainly the
Painted Redstart, Lesser Nighthawk, Prothonotary, Worm-eating,
Black-throated Green, Hooded, Chestnut-sided, Tennessee, Blackpoll,
Black-and-white, Black-throated Gray Warblers, Northern Parula, American
Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird, Baltimore Oriole, Summer Tanager,
many shorebirds, among others were the highlights for me.

We just marveled at the spectacle of hundreds of swallows on the two
Franktown 'pits' -- McClain & Walker. At least 4 species (Cliff, Violet-green,
Tree, & Barn) and likely the other two as well. They continually swept across
the water, close to the surface. At Walker they twice rose up, moved away, and
came back.

At our house, the summer color birds have arrived: Today 5 Lazuli Buntings, 4
Black-headed Grosbeaks, as well as the red House Finches and other regulars. A
Western Tanager only once, 3 days ago.

We saw migrant sparrows along the roads: Vesper, White-crowned, and Chipping.
