[cobirds] American Three-toed Woodpecker, Brainard L. Rec. Area, Boulder County
This morning we decided to hike along the north side of Long Lake (destination Lake Isabel). We saw an American Three-toed Woodpecker flaking wood off a tree. It was only 30 ft. off the trail about 3 feet off the ground. On our way back down from our hike, again along the north side of Long Lake, we first saw 2 Three-toed just 20 ft. off the trail; a short distance farther 2 more; and then a little farther along yet another 2! Three of them were males. Not sure if I'd say we saw 7 total since we may have seen the same bird we saw going up the trail when we came back down. But, a confirmed 6 American Three-toedWoodpeckers! After trying to see one several times in the past with no luck we hit the jackpot today! [cobirds] Bald Eagle talon-lock display, Adams County
This morning I was driving east on Hwy. 7 and was just west of the Platte River (near Brighton in Adams County). As I'm always on the lookout for birds I noticed two large raptor-sized birds fly north across the Hwy. I kept glancing to try and figure out which species (not the best light). All of a sudden they were talons-locked and tumbling downward while the light was catching the white heads and tails of two Bald Eagles. I saw about 3 somersaults before they separated. I admit I had a very wow conversation with myself seeing this display! Also, saw a Western Meadowlark on a power line today. My FOS Mourning Dove pair in my yard was sighted March 26 (a couple of days earlier than last year - same pair?). I expect they will remain all season. This morning of group of 9 from the Boulder Bird Club visited Sawhill Ponds and found the Pacific Wren in the west section along Boulder Creek. The other one was in the top of a tree not far south of there at the SW corner of Monarch Court and Franklin Avenue (a short block east of Keith Helart Park). [cobirds] Common Grackle and Mourning Dove, Louisville, Boulder County
I knew I should have posted this earlier. I had my first Common Grackle last Friday, March 22, just before our big Saturday snow. I really didn't want to brag about it because i know I'll probably be invaded by a bunch of them all Spring and Summer. But I've not seen one in the yard since then. (They can stay on Paula Hansley's side of Louisville and visit me once a week.) I did see my first Mourning Dove in the yard this morning and they look so small next the Eurasian Collared Dove that briefly attempted pecking order with it. The Boulder Bird Club's 1st Sunday birding at Walden ponds back on Jan. 6 also observed a Prairie Falcon in the same exact area that Cara Stiles saw this morning. [cobirds] Western Scrub-Jay Louisville, Boulder County
While taking a walk for exercise (and birding without binocs) we saw a Western Scrub-Jay in the Coyote Run Open Space (Louisville) at the intersection of the east-west trail and where one can take a trail and head north toward S. Boulder Road. This was about 1:00 p.m. today. The bird had what looked like a peanut and landed in a shrub and put it down on the limb or leaves. Then it picked up the nut and flew to another bush and ultimately decided to fly down to the ground and hide the nut in short grass at the edge of the trail. We were lucky we stopped to observe hummingbirds resting in the bushes or would have probably not seen the jay. We do not often see the Western Scrub-Jay in Louisville. [cobirds] Mourning Dove mating ritual, Boulder County, Luisville
Around 5 P.M. today I glanced out the window and noticed a pair of Mourning Doves briefly in the act of mating upon the fence of my yard. Interestingly, I observed the activity following the actual mating which was each bird taking turns pecking (not sure how else to to describe it) at one another's face, so near their eyes which they closed as the pecking neared their eyes, and also around the upper neck. The male and female each took turns doing this for more than 5 minutes. Then they each preened themselves and then flew to the grass to feed under the bird feeder. I was able to discern the size and colorization difference between the male and female (male larger with more color/iridescense on the head and neck. I have seen Mourning Doves in my yard for years, but this observed activity was a first for me. Not sure where they may be nesting. [cobirds] Western Tanager - Louisville
I was shocked to see a Western Tanager flash through my yard around 4:00 PM today. It briefly landed on the bird bath, but something spooked it and I didn't see it again. Certainly a new yard bird for me! Sharon Norfleet Northeast Louisville -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Harlan's Hawk, Boulder county
We observed a beautiful adult-morph Harlan's Hawk this afternoon about 1:00 PM at the intersection of Hygiene Road and Crane Hollow Road in Boulder County. Another Red-tailed Hawk was present and we heard the Harlan's calling repeatedly.
