[cobirds] Snow Bunting--Larimer (nearly Wyoming)
Hi All, Yesterday (Dec 28) afternoon, we found an adult Snow Bunting at Hohnholz Lakes SWA in extreme northern Larimer County, at the parking area for Hohnholz Lake #2. There were no other birds that we saw besides a handful of Common Ravens and Rough-legged Hawks. To reach Hohnholz, drive north to Laramie on 287 (Wyoming!), drive west to Woods Landing/Jelm on WY230, south from Jelm on WY10 (which turns into CR103 once back in Colorado), and then a righthand turn at a large, green Colorado Division of Wildlife sign. After turning off of CR103, stay on the main dirt road for a mile or two and look for the sign for Hohnholz #2. This is about a 3 hour trip from Denver. CR103 does continue on to Fort Collins/Poudre Canyon, but we've heard that it's impassible in the winter. Good birding! [cobirds] First Sunday Birding at Walden Ponds, Boulder
Hi All, Joel and I led the Boulder Bird Club/Boulder County Audubon First Sunday Birding outing at Walden Ponds this morning. The weather, birding, and 40+ participants were all quite pleasant, and we tallied 56 species. Trip list below. Please forgive the archaic taxonomic order, just copying off of the checklist. Pied-billed Grebe American White Pelican Double-crested Cormorant Great Blue Heron GREEN HERON - Possibly two. One flew across Cottonwood Marsh while we were making announcement, and another was seen extremely well later in the day. Canada Goose Mallard Northern Shoveler Gadwall American Wigeon Redhead Sharp-shinned Hawk - One seen briefly by a few people along the Boulder Creek Path behind the water treatment plant. Red-tailed Hawk American Coot Killdeer American Avocet - Two flyovers on the Sawhill side. Spotted Sandpiper Rock Pigeon Mourning Dove Eurasian Collared-Dove Belted Kingfisher Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Western Wood-Pewee Cordilleran Flycatcher - Down on Boulder Creek. Say's Phoebe Eastern Kingbird Tree Swallow Northern Rough-winged Swallow Bank Swallow Cliff Swallow Barn Swallow Blue Jay Black-billed Magpie American Crow Common Raven White-breasted Nuthatch House Wren American Robin Cedar Waxwing European Starling Warbling Vireo - Both EASTERN and Western subspecies. Yellow Warbler Common Yellowthroat Blue Grosbeak Song Sparrow Red-winged Blackbird Western Meadowlark Yellow-headed Blackbird Great-tailed Grackle Common Grackle Bullock's Oriole BULLOCK'S X BALTIMORE ORIOLE - One adult male on the backside of Sawhill Ponds. House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow NO Marsh Wrens, which really surprised us. Also, stopped at the McConnell Drive-Saint Vrain River bridge afterwards. The Eastern Phoebe reported by Steve Mlodinow wasn't seen, but it is likely still in the area (our stop was extremely brief). We did have it singing yesterday evening (about 5:30 pm) just downstream of the bridge. This is the second Eastern Phoebe we have had at this location, the first was a one-minute wonder in May of 2009. [cobirds] Summer Tanager -- JeffCo (5-23)
Hi All, On our return trip from the CFO convention in Grand Junction, we took Clear Creek Canyon (Highway 6) from I-70 to Golden. At a random pull-off (This habitat looks okay, let's take a quick look...), our visiting birders from North Carolina, Ali Iyoob and Matt Daw, get out of the car and nonchalantly say Summer Tanager, referring to a call emanating from a roadside cottonwood. The CO birders among us, myself, Joel Such, and Nick Moore, immediately responded with No, you mean Western, right? With binoculars up, it was indeed an immature male SUMMER TANAGER. We observed and photographed it for a few minutes before it flew downstream. The elevation was 6825', and the GPS coordinates for this pull-off were Lat 39.736215°, -105.386840°. Good Birding! [cobirds] Pawnee NG Birding, Weld/Morgan (BLACKPOLL WARBLER) - 5/18
Hi All, Joel and I had a great day of plains birding with visiting North Carolina young birders Matt Daw and Ali Iyoob today. We managed to avoid the rain for most of the morning, but it finally caught up with us around 6 PM. Jackson Lake SP in Morgan County was especially productive, with BROWN THRASHERS, a CHIMNEY SWIFT, ORANGE-CROWNED and WILSON'S WARBLERS, and a couple of ORCHARD ORIOLES. The highlight though was an adult male *BLACKPOLL WARBLER* in the Russian-olive groves just east of the boat ramp parking lot. Murphy's Pasture (CR 96) in Weld was also pretty good, with a total of 26 MCCOWN'S LONGSPURS and 330 LARK BUNTINGS. In total, we counted 1360 plus Lark Buntings in our cross-county wanderings. In the Beebe Draw area, we also had a single WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on WCR 42 between WCR 45 and WCR 47. Also an interesting find was a single-species flock of 127 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES in a puddle on east side WCR 47, just south of WCR 40. This wass by far the largest flock of this species that I have ever seen, especially given that most of the Red-necked Phalaropes I've seen in Colorado are just in 1s or 2s or 3s mixed in with larger Wilson's Phalarope flocks. Hi All, Okay, so our probable Pac Loon was actually a Common. Also, I meant to write Eared Grebe instead of Horned . . . it looks like we're a bit rusty! We're going to have to try for the phalarope another time. We also tried digiscoping it, but it wasn't cooperative enough to get a shot. Also had a good raft of Western Grebes (counted 51), along with a few Horned Grebes, Buffleheads, Common Goldeneyes, etc. We also had a fly-over immature Bald Eagle to round off the trip. Re: [cobirds] Loon molt
When Joel and I observed the loon on July 26th, it dove frequently and readily enough (every couple of minutes). It would stay under for 30 seconds at most and seemed to have its head underwater for most of the time otherwise. It had a fairly good success rate, as it came up with what I believe were shad (a non-game fish which I know to be in the lake) every dozen or so dives. Marcel Such NW of Lyons, CO mps...@gmail.com suchboys.blogspot.com On Fri, Aug 27, 2010 at 5:25 PM, Robert Zilly bzbir...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Folks, I just returned from watching the Big Mac Pac Loon and it was diving frequently. Many of the dives were very short, 1 - 4 seconds. A few were closer to 10 seconds and one time when I got to 20 seconds I looked around and realized it had swum out of view while under. It was also spending a lot of time simply holding its head under. The clartity of the water was rather poor. You cannot see the bottom three feet from shore. There was just a slight breeeze and it was only making a ripple on the surface. I wonder if its behavior could be due to the water conditions rather than illness of injury? I also found a City of Longmont doc which states that fishermen could expect to catch carp, walleye, and crappie. And the shoreline has always been popular with large waders like Great Egret and Great-blue Heron. Bob Zilly, Longmont On Fri, Aug 27, 2010 at 3:27 PM, coloradodip...@aol.com wrote: Nick et al.: While wing molt may not be the cause of the McIntosh PALO not diving, there are any number of other possibilities, such as illness. However, it might behoove us to know what it's eating, if anything. If nothing, that could provide more suggestion in the vein of illness or other infirmity. However, loons eat things other than fish, though usually considered obligate piscivores. From the Common Loon BNA account (I couldn't get to the PALO account) -- bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/: Crustaceans—e.g., crayfish (Decapoda) constitute major part of diet when fish are scarce or water is murky (1.0 m visibility), up to about a third of diet for males and more for females (Barr 1973http://species/313/biblio/bib015). On some Wisconsin lakes, observed adults and chicks regularly observed foraging on snails (W. Piper, pers. com.). Leeches (Hirudinea) are occasionally an important food, and individuals that are stressed or ill sometimes eat vegetation (Barr 1973 http://species/313/biblio/bib015). Having no chance to go see the loon in question, others will have to provide the data on the bird's foraging, or lack thereof. Tony Leukering Villas, NJ -Original Message- From: Nick Komar quetza...@comcast.net To: coloradodip...@aol.com; cobirds@googlegroups.com Sent: Thu, Aug 26, 2010 11:47 pm Subject: Re: [cobirds] Loon molt Many thanks to Tony Leukering for setting the record straight on underwater wing-powered locomotion (or rather, lack thereof) among loons, and also for sharing his vast wealth of ornithological knowledge with our Colorado birding community, making us all wealthier (in knowledge, anyway). I should have done some basic research before sticking my foot in my mouth in a public forum like Cobirds. I have now done the appropriate homework to learn more about underwater locomotion among diving birds. A number of bird taxa including alcids, diving petrels, some shearwaters, and our Rocky Mountain dippers use their wings to power underwater diving as well as aerial flight, but not loons. Interestingly, I learned that some of these species undergo very heavy wing molt and yet still dive during these periods of wing molt. So, it begs the question (maybe Tony can answer this as well), why is the Boulder Pacific Loon not diving as would be typical foraging behavior for this species. Thanks again, Tony! [cobirds] Support the Tropicbirds!
Posted with permission from the COBirds moderator. Hi All, On April 24th, I will be joining forces with four other young birders from across the country to compete in the Great Texas Birding Classic (GTBC). Together we are the Tropicbirds, the American Birding Association's (ABA) GTBC team. We will be doing a Big Day in which we will count as many bird species as possible within a 24-hour period. That's right, 24-hours of non-stop birding fun with no sleep! This year we are doing the Upper Texas Coast, birding such legendary places as High Island, Sabine Woods, Galveston Island, and Anahuac. All entry fees support bird conservation and awareness. Additionally, this is the main fundraising event for the ABA's education and young birder programs, so I greatly encourage you to make a tax-deductible pledge. If you are willing and able to make a substantial pledge, that is great, BUT lots of small five or ten dollar donations are equally or dare I say even more powerful! The ABA's youth programs have helped myself and many other young birders hone their note taking, illustration, photographic, and writing skills through the ABA Young Birder of the Year competition. ABA camps for young birders bring kids together to bird and learn along side some of the best birding mentors in the country. And last, but certainly not least, the ABA's publications, such as *Birding, Winging-It,* *North American Birds*, and other brochures, help broadcast and educate the general public about birds, birding, conservation, and other vital environmental subjects. The future of birding and bird conservation depends on today's youth to carry the torch forward! I'd love to see a swell of support from across my home state of Colorado and beyond! To make a pledge or to find out more, go to this linkhttp://www.aba.org/yb/tropicbirds/pledge.html, or www.aba.org/yb/tropicbirds/pledge.html Be sure to select the Great Texas Birding Classic. Those of you who want to do a $$/species pledge, rather than a fixed pledge, will receive an invoice by mail after the event telling you how many species were tallied on the Big Day and what you owe based on your pledge. FYI, we are expecting to find about 150 species. If you make your pledge online, please put a note in the comment section that says through Marcel Such and send me a quick e-mail, so that I can keep track of who's donating on behalf of my fundraising efforts. I thank you in advance for your consideration.
