[cobirds] Walden Ponds, Saturday morning

2021-03-13 Thread Richard Pautsch
I went out to Walden at 9:30 this morning and spent an hour checking the
ponds with a friend from Boulder Bird Club before the precip got going.
Didn't find any early migrants, but there were differences in the birds
present today from what I'd seen there on Sunday and Monday mornings:

Many more Green-winged Teal (45)
Significantly less Gadwall (17)
More Wigeon (9)
The small flock of 6 Ring-necked Ducks was gone, as were the Shovellers.
The Hooded Mergansers (18) were still present, as were the 4 Great Blue
Herons. There were still Red-winged Blackbirds on territory in the
cattails, but no flocks in the trees as there had been.
Only shorebird was a single Killdeer.

[cobirds] Riders on the Storm + Sparrow Challenge, Boulder

2020-09-09 Thread Richard Pautsch
>From my desk window on West Pearl today, I saw both Western and Mountain
Bluebirds, neither of which I've seen from home before.

I went over to Community Gardens as the sun came out late this afternoon.
Both Bluebirds were there as well, along with an Olive-sided Flycatcher on
a steel fence post, a very tired Western Pewee on the ground, and Pine
Siskins. A Kestrel came by and picked off one of the exhausted birds.

If you're restless at home and seeking a real birding challenge, check out
the numerous sparrows in the NE corner of the Gardens. With many of them
juveniles, you can spend a challenging hour or two trying to separate
striped upper breast young Chipping Sparrows from young Clay-colored from
young Brewer's Sparrows from young Lincoln's Sparrows. Or maybe it's a
juvenile gambeli White-crowned. And could that be a Field Sparrow, or was
it just an immature leucophrys White-crowned? Or was there some yellow
around the eye to make it a Savannah? (Today, it was even more
challenging, as many were disheveled, feathers scattered and hiding usual
ID marks).

[cobirds] Rabbit Mt, Brewer's Sparrow, Sage Thrasher, Boulder Co

2020-08-21 Thread Richard Pautsch
Rabbit Mountain open space, east of Lyons, has a different assemblage of
birds than other sites in the County. This morning, before we'd left the
parking lot, we had Blue Grosbeak, Sage Thrasher, and heard a Canyon Wren
up on the cliffs. We took the trail up the hill, then walked back down on
the closed gravel road. The most common bird was Sage Thrasher (Boulder
Bird Club had 17 on their trip two days ago). We also found Brewer's
Sparrows along the road, two Gnatcatchers, another Blue Grosbeak, and a
Hairy Woodpecker.

2020-06-02 Thread Richard Pautsch
There were two male Bobolinks this morning in the meadows surrounding the
big Cherryvale Trail parking lot (on the road to Open Space center), along
with several "singing" Savannah Sparrows. (They have been at this spot
around June 1 for several years)
There was also a pair of very active Rock Wrens near the end of the Open
Space area, just before the southern end of Cherryvale. To find them, turn
onto Cherryvale from Marshall Road, then pull over on the side of the road
at the first gate onto the Open Space land (across from the old
school/church). Walk east along the fence fence line going up the hill to
the canal, where there is a (wide) board bridge. On the east side of the
canal, walk diagonally uphill to the first small hogback area.

I had my FOS Yellow Warbler this morning at Walden. It was a male, flying

tree it landed in, as if it were attempting to claim a territory. Later,
there was a male Great-tailed Grackle in the same area, and a female in the
tall grass near the house. There was a pair of Wood Ducks in the trees
along the creek near the sewage plant discharge, likely nesting. A Say's

Other FOS birds for me this morning were House Wrens (several singing),
Rough-winged Swallows, and Cowbirds.

[cobirds] Re: Chestnut Sided Warbler present Monday a.m.

2018-06-19 Thread Richard Pautsch
The Chestnut-sided Warbler was singing from a dead branch at the top of a
tree near the beginning of the South Mesa trail Monday morning at 8 a.m.
Note that the South Mesa parking lot was closed this morning, but you can
park across the road at Doudy Draw parking lot.

[cobirds] Re: Mystery birds and juv Horned Larks

2017-05-28 Thread Richard Pautsch
Your note solved another identification mystery for me. I was birding last
week in snow-covered SE Wyoming. There were many birds sitting on the back
roads because of the snow (and it was hard to pull off the road to get a
good look at them). The majority were small brown sparrow-like birds with
markings on the breast. I first thought they must be female
Chestnut-collared Longspurs, but then began to wonder why I wasn't seeing
any colorful males amongst them. I watched the birds on the road fly, but
most didn't seem to have any white on the tail (and the ones that did
turned out to be Vesper Sparrows). It never crossed my mind that there
might be juvenile birds in mid-May (especially since it looked more like
February). Thanks for the very helpful note and reference.

[cobirds] Dippers, Wild Turkey, Boulder

There were 2 Dippers this afternoon near the "mill pond" by the first

Turkey gobbling, which surprised me, as I've never seen one nearby, along
with Towhees and Robins calling.

[cobirds] Bullock's Oriole, Bohemian Waxwing, Boulder County

2016-12-18 Thread Richard Pautsch
I saw the Bullock's Oriole on today's CBC (Area 3) at 8:30. It was
roosting in the tallest tree in the back yard of 820 10th St with a group
of Robins (looked quite disheveled with its feathers puffed up for
warmth). Best visible from the alley. It was not there at 11:30, and had
not been seen at the freshly-stocked feeder yet this morning. After
considerable searching, I also found the Bohemian Waxwing, eating the red
berries with multiple Robins and many Cedar Waxwings. The Waxwing seemed
very active, and is most easily picked out from the Cedars by looking for
the white wing bar (and light gray breast rather than yellow).

[cobirds] Swamp Sparrow, Boulder

At 8:30 this morning there was a group of a dozen sparrows along the edge
of the paved path leading to the Boulder Creek trail from the East Boulder
Rec center (across from the NE corner of the parking lot). There was a
Swamp Sparrow (and two Song Sparrows) with the rest beingTree Sparrows.

(it's cold out there--the 4 intrepid members of the Boulder Bird Club on
our Wednesday morning trip only lasted half an hour this morning before we
went for coffee, but in that short period probably saw 100 birds in the
trees at the beginning of the trail--mostly American Goldfinches, plus 20
Tree Sparrows, 5 Robins, a Red-tailed Hawk, and the Swamp Sparrow and Song
Sparrows mentioned above)

[cobirds] Boulder Audubon trip list, Walden Ponds, Boulder Co.

2015-01-18 Thread Richard Pautsch
We found 28 species this morning in a 4 hour trip through Walden Ponds and
adjoining areas. The highlight was a pair of Great Horned Owls in the
western end of the site near the creek. We walked down the recently
reopened Boulder Creek Trail, then back along the shoulder of 75th (good
raptors and the far off eagle nests, with an adult Bald Eagle perched near
one of the nests). The only open water other than Boulder Creek was at the
first pond along the entrance road, where the bubbler is keeping an area of
the pond open, which featured a group of Ring-necked Ducks and single
Hooded Mergansers and Common Goldeneyes. Here's the complete list:

Canada Goose
Cackling Goose
Red-tailed Hawk (including a dark phase Harlan's)
Rock Dove
Tree Sparrow
Magpie
Starling
Ring-necked Duck
Gadwall
Robin
Ring-billed Gull
White-breasted Nuthatch

Re: [cobirds] Boulder County mountain birding

2014-07-25 Thread Richard Pautsch
On Monday, I had a Three-toed Woodpecker on the west side of Brainerd Lake
and a Pine Grosbeak along the closed road on the north side (and a singing
Fox Sparrow in the willows along the lake), plus a single Evening Grosbeak
at Mitchell Lake along with multiple Gray Jays and Crossbills and a family
of Brown Creepers along the trail.

On Thu, Jul 24, 2014 at 8:23 PM, William H Kaempfer
william.kaemp...@colorado.edu wrote:

I took advantage of a slow summer day at work to head up early into the

Lake entry gate (before 7:00 a.m.) where my good fortune meant that my
advance years allowed no-charge entry! (The gate keepers were already on
 duty!)

While I couldn’t come up with my primary targets (Three-toed and
Golden-crowned Kinglet) things were pretty birdy at the Mitchell Lake
trailhead (though not so much on the trail) and the willows on the
southwest side of Brainard Lake itself. The ML trailhead had a mixed flock
of more than 20 each of Red-breasted Nuthatches and Mountain Chickadees
with a few Gray-headed Juncos and Yellow-rumped Warblers thrown in and lots
of Red Crossbills calling in fight overhead. Alas, no kinglets of any
kind. So interpret that—post breading flocking. Similar birds were by
Brainard along with Pine Siskin, Wilson’s Warblers, Lincoln and
White-crowned Sparrows (in this case, the latter all still on territory).

I withdrew to the delightful Marrocco’s in Ward for breakfast. A place
worth a visit as it is right next door to one of the best feeder spots
(Band-tailed Pigeons almost certain right now) in Boulder County at Pete’s
(the Ward town Marshall) place. Pete and the entire constabulary of
western Boulder County were also having a working breakfast at the
Marrocco—so fear not for your safety in Ward, no matter what John
 Vanderpoel says.

Re: [cobirds] Eastern Wood-peewee in Fort Collins

2014-06-27 Thread Richard Pautsch
At Noon today (Friday the 27th), the Pewee was singing a bit farther north
on the trail than previously reported. Take the Poudre River trail to the
paved bicycle Rest Area, then a short path to the river, where it was
singing in an open grove of trees in a recently flooded (sand-covered) area.

This pewee is currently singing from the east side of the Poudre River

at Cottonwood and a very striking uniformly dark hawk with a whitish tail
ending in a narrow, well-defined black band in the trees bordering Dodd

[cobirds] Black Tern, Shorebirds, Little Gaynor Lake, Boulder Co.

2013-08-09 Thread Richard Pautsch
There was a juvenile Black Tern flying around Little Gaynor Lake this noon,
along with several Avocets. My scouting for shorebirds for tomorrow's
Boulder Bird Club trip in the immediate Boulder area was largely
unsuccessful--water is still high almost everywhere except for Cottonwood
Marsh at Walden, where there were lots of shorebirds (but they were all
Killdeers). We'll try Loloff tomorrow.

Yesterday's flock of 20+ Common Redpolls was still at Lily Lake in RMNP
around 11 this morning. They are feeding on the seeds of a large number of
2 foot tall annuals at the south end of the lake. If they aren't there
when you first arrive, hang around the area near the small bridge and watch
for white movements along the path in front of and behind the bridge.
