[cobirds] Marauding Magpies and Bad Boy Blue Jays in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2023-08-26 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
Paula Hansley's recent post about a flock of Bushtits chirping and chipping
at her suet prompts me to report on a phenomenon I've not seen before in my
little townhouse yard near Holly & Arapahoe in west Centennial.    In the past
month or so gangs of 30+ Black-billed Magpies and 24+ Blue Jays have taken over
my yard, demolishing a brick of suet in an hour or less and terrorizing the
smaller birds (except the male Broad-tailed Hummingbird who continues to patrol
the hummer feeder and isn't afraid of anyone).  I finally stopped putting out
suet because it takes me a couple of hours to make a batch of 6 bricks and I
was starting to feel like Sisyphus.   I've had both species coming to my yard
over the years, but never before in such large flocks.  I'm also seeing them
foraging in the lawns around here, I'm hoping they're looking for the Japanese
Beetles & their grubs which have also shown up here in abundance this summer.
Another interesting note is that the small murder of American Crows that
usually is in the neighborhood has not been around lately.

[cobirds] New Summer Yardbird - Mountain Chickadee - west Centennial, Arapahoe county

2023-07-22 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
I've had Mountain Chickadees visit my little townhouse yard 1/4 mile northwest
of the intersection of Holly St & Arapahoe Rd in the winter, not every year but
often enough to not be a surprise. It was a big surprise today, July 22nd, when
one stopped by to sample my offerings of seed and suet.

[cobirds] New Yardbird - Western Kingbird - at my Little Townhouse Yard in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2023-07-18 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
I awoke ~ 7:30 this morning to a curiously melodic whirring sound wafting
in the open bedroom windows.  There was also an occasional chatter that I have
heard  before somewhere else but I couldn't peg it.  Looking up into the leaves
of the 60-foot aspens just outside the window I could see bits of bright yellow
near the top.  I put Merlin on the task and he didn't respond to the whirring,
but the first chatter he heard he identifed as Western Kingbird.  Once he told
me that I recognized it as well, the fact that it was 'out of place' had kept
me from identifying it.  What I had was a pair of Western Kingbirds feeding
four fledglings!  Assuming they hadn't flown in from eastern Colorado I have to
guess they'd been nesting somewhere close by, but I've never before seen or
heard them in my little townhouse neighborhood 1/4 mile northwest of the
intersection of Holly & Arapahoe.

Re: [cobirds] Digest for cobirds@googlegroups.com - 4 updates in 2 topics - 6/29/2023

2023-06-29 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Following up on the email comment expressing frustration about folks using
4-digit codes instead of the actual species name... I agree wholeheartedly that
we should not assume that everyone who reads CoBirds knows all the 4-digit band
codes.  When I went to the official government website to look up this CAQU
code I did not find it in their list of band codes.

Why are people using these 4-letter codes lately on CoBirds? I thought the
rules are to use the full name of the bird species. Not everyone has these
codes memorized. Also, please, everyone, include location and county.

I was at Brown's Park NWR in NW CO last Wednesday and heard a quail. I am
seeking input and guidance on evaluating this recording to determine if it is
indeed a CAQU, or simply a talented YBCH.

I heard it just west of the Swinging Bridge Campground near the trail. There is
a pond on the north side of that trail, and it was just north of that. I walked
north along the hillside on the east side of the pond, hoping to get closer and
get a better recording, and maybe even a sighting, but the one call is all I
have.

The shape of the call aligns with a CAQU, and I counted 8 YBCH in the area. I
have attached the recording. The quail sound is at the 22 second mark.

At the recommendation of a very experienced birder friend, I've added the bird
and the recording to my eBird list. You can hear it here:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S142299120

If there is consensus here that it may be a quail, I will submit it to the
records committee.

[cobirds] Grassland Bird Study at Daniels Park

Subject: Grassland Bird Study at Daniels Park. Call for Volunteers. We are
looking for volunteers to help conduct a grassland bird study at Daniels Park
in Sedalia (Douglas County) in conjunction with Denver Mountain Parks and
Denver Zoo. Daniels Park has been managed with one species in mind since 1938,
the American Bison. The park is a preserved piece of prairie landscape that
connects to 12,000 acres of open space, making it an important conservation
site. Research documenting avian populations at this site has not been done
before, so this point-count study aims to gain insight into the grassland bird
population in the park.  Our goal is to create a small team of volunteers who
are experienced in grassland bird identification to work in pairs, with one
observer and one recorder. We are looking for birders who are confident in
their grassland bird identification skills with species such as Say's Phoebe,
Western Kingbird, Horned Lark, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, House Wren, Western
Bluebird, House Finch, Chipping Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Song
Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Brown-headed Cowbird, and Black-headed Grosbeak.  The
study is currently planned to run from May 22- June 9, M-F from about 6-10 am
daily. Volunteers are expected to work 1-2 days a week for the three-week study
time frame.  Training will be held in early May to prepare for the count. The
24 survey points are located in the SW and SE bison pastures, which are not
open to the public. Safety training while working in proximity to bison is a
top priority. Please email Jennifer Redmond at redmo...@miamioh.edu to express
your interest in participating or give her a call at (303)250-3180 if you have
questions.

Hello Fellow Birders,
My neighborhood 1/4 mile northwest of Holly St & Arapahoe Rd was overrun by
robins this morning; the shriveled fruits on the various crabapple trees didn't
stand a chance.   I counted only 18 while counting birds in my little townhouse
yard for Project FeederWatch, but when I later took a walk I encountered
several different flocks of 25 - 30, totaling between 150 - 300 birds.  There
were a few Cedar Waxwings mixed in with some of the flocks, including some
identifiable as 1st-year birds.

[cobirds] Magpie Flyby - west Centennial near Holly & Arapahoe, Arapahoe County

2021-08-25 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders, While sitting on our east-facing porch this afternoon my
wife and I observed a flyby of at least 100 magpies.  They were flying west in
squadrons of 2 to 8 birds, 10 - 20 seconds apart.  All on the same 'path'
through the trees.  Mostly quiet, just a few calls from time to time. When we

[cobirds] Official Response from CPW About Use of State Wildlife Areas

2020-07-10 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
I have received an official response from CPW concerning use of SWAs for
birding, hiking, etc.  This came from their Communication Center in response to
my inquiry about being allowed onto properties that do not allow fishing, if
all I have is a fishing license.  I have pasted below what I believe to be the
salient portion of their reply:
You are correct, a valid hunting or fishing license will be required for
everyone 18 or older attempting to access any State Wildlife Area or State
Trust Land leased by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, beginning July 1. This does
not apply to State Parks. (SWA FAQ).

Even if the property doesn't have fishing opportunities, a license is still
required.
The rule change was adopted unanimously on April 30 by the Colorado Parks and
Wildlife Commission.
SWAs are intended for wildlife habitat and wildlife-related recreation (hunting
and fishing). Unlike national forests or local government parks, SWAs are not
“public lands” that provide for multi-use recreation. Most SWAs provide
important resting, feeding, birthing, or breeding areas for Colorado wildlife.
In that way, year ‘round outdoor recreation may have negative impacts on the
wildlife populations in those areas. The license requirement is an effort to
limit multi-use recreation on these properties, not encourage it. While hikers,
photographers, birders, and others may in fact be recreating by watching
wildlife, only those with a hunting or fishing license are contributing to the
purchase and maintenance of these properties.
...I'm hoping this response from CPW answers everyone's questions and concerns
about SWA access.

[cobirds] Re: Colorado's 350 State Wildlife Areas

2020-07-02 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
As I read the guidance CPW has put out on use of SWA's, I wonder if the idea of
simply buying a fishing license to gain access to all the SWA's really works.
In their FAQs on this subject there is an entry that reads:"Question:   If I
have a hunting license does it allow me to engage in any activity I wish on a
SWA?  Answer:   No. All other regulations still apply. It allows you to engage
in the outdoor activities authorized for that specific property." (emphasis
mine).  Many SWA's do not list fishing as an activity authorized on the
property.
Chuck Hundertmark, in an earlier post in this thread, suggested: "When
questions about policy or intent of the agency arise, the best approach is
probably talking to the agency."  I think that is an excellent idea, and I'd
like to suggest that one or more of our birding organizations (DFO, CFO,
Audubon Rockies...) contact CPW to get clarification that they can then
disseminate to the birding community.

[cobirds] Four Robins and a Cooper's Hawk along Little Dry Creek Trail, west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2020-04-10 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
Today's constitutional was on the trail along Little Dry Creek, from where it
crosses Holly Street just north of Arapahoe Road toward the northwest to
trail's end where it meets the High Line Canal Trail a little ways south of
Orchard Road.  Just as we were approaching the canal trail bridge over the
creek there was an explosion of frantic bird chatter immediately behind and
above us.  I looked up to catch a glimpse of 5 birds in close formation flying
very fast and passing about 20 feet above.  I was able to peg a couple of them
as robins and guessed another two were also, but the trailing bird was a little
larger and had a banded tail - Cooper's Hawk!  They disappeared into the
overstory and a few seconds later the chatter stopped.  Then a few seconds
after that two of the robins reappeared and flew - rather nonchalantly it
seemed to me - back in the direction from which they came.

[cobirds] New Cornell Lab Project: Nest Quest Go

Hello Fellow Birders,
Many of you remember the Cornell Nest Card project of the late 1900's, some
of you probably participated in it.  That project ran from the 1960's into the
1990's and they amassed over 300,000 handwritten notecards of bird

[cobirds] Bullocks Orioles in west Centennial Arapahoe County

2019-05-07 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
A pair of Bullock's Orioles deigned to favor my little townhouse yard near
Holly and Arapahoe with their presence today.  The suet was their reason for
stopping by, they fed at it several times during the afternoon.  They added the
orange blend to the primary colors of the House Finches and American
Goldfinches, brightening a dreary day.
A pair of Chipping Sparrows have become an irregular part of the cleanup crew -
gleaning tidbits on the ground dropped from the various feeders.  They started
showing up mid-Winter, I'm surprised they're still hanging around.

[cobirds] American Tree Sparrow and Cedar Waxwings in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2019-03-13 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
Recent unusual visitors to my little townhouse yard near Holly and Arapaho
include an American Tree Sparrow and a flock of 7 Cedar Waxwings.  The waxwings
were one-day wonders this past Monday, the sparrow has hung around for a few
days.  A month or so ago a Song Sparrow was here for a couple of weeks before
moving on to greener pastures.  Some of the Pine Siskins I reported a few
months ago continue to come in with the American Goldfinches, though numbers of
both have diminished.

[cobirds] Waxwings! In west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2018-10-28 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,
A small flock of Cedar Waxwings just invaded my little townhouse yard in
west Centennial, near Holly & Arapahoe.  Gobbling down the little fruits on the
"crabapple" tree (I have no idea what kind of tree it really is, something the
builder planted when these places were built in the early 80's).
We've also been inundated by robins the past few days.

[cobirds] Black Grosbeak and Apparently Breeding Chipping Sparrows in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2018-07-22 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

A Black Grosbeak has been hitting the cup of peanut pieces in my little
townhouse yard in west Centennial, near Holly & Arapahoe.  I'm guessing it's a
first year bird, though I can't tell them apart from adult females.

Also, I started seeing an adult Chipping Sparrow (never saw two) around my
yard in early- to mid-June.  About 2 weeks ago I observed it several times in
my front lawn and each time it was collecting small insects.  It would then fly
up into a large silver maple tree.  About a week ago I watched it collect bits
of seed from under the feeders.  It then flew into a dense crab-apple tree from
which a din of chips then erupted - it was feeding fledgling(s).  A few days
ago I started seeing Chipping Sparrows with streaky breasts (kids) foraging
under the feeders.

As for the flock of crossbills that graced my yard with their presence for a
couple of months, they have moved on.  I took down the feeders in mid-June
because I was seeing sick House Finches, plus I was going to be out of town for
a couple of weeks.  Haven't seen the crossbills since.

Keep Smilin',

[cobirds] Unusual Yard Birds in west Centennial - Arapahoe County

2018-05-13 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

The flock of ~ 15 Red Crossbills I first reported in mid-March is still
hanging around my little townhouse yard in west Centennial, near Holly &
Arapahoe.  Sometimes we see one or two, sometimes the whole gang.

More recent visitors include a Chipping Sparrow who's been here this past
week, a few Pine Siskins who were here for a week or so but appear to have
moved on, and yesterday's cameo by a male Black-headed Grosbeak.

Chickadees are on eggs, resident Broad-tailed hummers are back, and the
first fledge of 'great-horned' House Finches are haranguing their Dads for food
while their Moms are probably incubating the next batch.  Which reminds me,

The Red Crossbills I reported visiting my little townhouse yard last Wednesday,

[cobirds] Interesting Variations of Common Birds at the Monte Vista Crane Festival, Rio Grande County - Plus Tidbits

2018-03-13 Thread kevygudguy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Saw a few interesting variants during the MVCF this past weekend:

-  A melanisitic Lesser Sand Hill Crane whose neck and head feathers looked
'terrible'.  Speculation was that it might have feather lice.

-  A white-headed Redhead duck.  This year-old female was a real trick to
identify; my companion and I finally pegged her as a partially leucistic female
Redhead because she was in the company of a standard male Redhead and her body
feathers were consistent with a female Redhead.  But how, you might ask, did we
know she was a year-old bird?  Well, when I described her to a USFWS person who
works on the Refuge he said he'd banded a juvenile female Redhead with a white
head last year!

- A Cinammon/Blue-winged Teal hybrid was seen and photographed by several
people (not me, I just saw the photos).

Tidbits:
- There were still all three species of Rosy-finches at the Hochstettler
property.
- Lots of Mountain Bluebirds moving through.
- A paucity of raptor species, but lots of Red-tailed Hawks and Great-horned
Owls.  One Prairie Falcon, one Bald Eagle, One Rough-legged Hawk, a couple of
American Kestrels.  I saw no Ferruginous Hawks, Merlins, Peregrines or Golden
eagles - all species I've seen there in past years.

Hello Fellow Birders,

I apologize for the late post, I needed to get confirmation.

The bird was first seen around 7:30 Sunday morning and left the pond around
10:30.  It was in a near-empty retention pond at the NE corner of Rio Grande
County Roads 8S & 5E.  I took several photos that require significant
enlargement to identify the bird, they arte not included here but I'll email
them to anyone who asks.  A local birder told me it might be an early record
for the Valley but that's not yet been determined.

[cobirds] Mountain Chickadee in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2017-08-13 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

A slightly tardy post... Yesterday morning a Mountain Chickadee joined
the crowd at the feeders in my little townhouse yard near Holly & Arapahoe
in west Centennial. Not unusual to see one or two here in the winter, but
I don't recall ever seeing one here this time of year.

[cobirds] Blue Grosbeaks near Larkspur, Douglas County

2017-07-26 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Yesterday (Tuesday, July 25) our intrepid nestbox monitoring team
spotted a pair of Blue Grosbeaks within 100 yards of where we saw a singing
Dickcissel two weeks ago. Just west of Spruce Mountain Road about 2 miles
south of Larkspur, they were in a small thicket of bushes and trees. Another
lifer for one of our crew! We also saw a Lesser Goldfinch in the same
location.

[cobirds] Dickcissel near Larkspur, Douglas County

2017-07-11 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Another Dickcissel sighting to add to the long list this year. While
checking bluebird/swallow nestboxes just west of Spruce Mountain Road about
two miles south of Larkspur three of us encountered a singing male
Dickcissel. He gave us great looks, turning a couple times atop his mullein
to
ensure we saw him from all angles. A lifer for one of our crew!

[cobirds] Dickcissels and a Mountain Plover on Burlington BBS Route, Kit Carson County

2017-06-17 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

I apologize for the tardy posting. Last week I worked the Breeding
Bird Survey that runs north and south on Kit Carson County roads about 8 miles
east of Burlington. I occasionally get a Dickcissel on this route, most
years I don't. This year I detected Dickcissels at 20 stops for a total of
46 birds! I also detected the first-ever-for-this-route Mountain Plover
foraging the lightly weedy corner of a center-pivot plot just north of
I-70.

I'd recently read that populations of Red-winged Blackbirds are in
decline. On this BBS route I see lots of Red-wingeds disappearing into the
wheat, I'm guessing they're nesting there as they would a cattail marsh. But
it seems to me that if the wheat gets harvested before the nests come to
fruition they'll lose those nests and the habitat in which to try again.

[cobirds] Talon-Grappling Ravens - Southern San Luis Valley

2017-05-21 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Today as I was driving CO 142 from Romeo (Conejos County) to San Luis
(Costilla County) I saw what appeared to be antagonistic behavior between
two ravens (probably a mated pair) and a third raven, guessing 100 feet above
the ground. The episode climaxed with one of the pair and the outlier
bird engaging in a talon grapple, one foot each, and spiralling/somersaulting
each other in a plummet toward the ground. They broke off about 5 - 10
feet from earth and both landed upright and hopped away to be about 20 feet
from each other. That's all I saw as I sped by at 65 mph.

I knew that raptors do this and I've seen Prairie Falcons and Bald
Eagles doing it, but I didn't know that ravens did it as well. Pretty
spectacular stuff.

[cobirds] Monte Vista Crane Festival last weekend

2017-03-14 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
The Sandhill Crane migration is in full swing in the San Luis Valley. I
was there during the official festival weekend and saw the expected
thousands of feeding, loafing and flying cranes, geese and ducks. Always an
amazing spectacle.
   Four unexpected sightings were:
- Seeing a dozen Bald Eagles congregate into a thermal just north of Home
Lake late Friday morning, ride the air up and head north.
- A very leucistic Red-tailed Hawk hanging around near the intersection of
Roads 8S & 5E, reported by others later as being harassed by a
Rough-legged Hawk. The bird had a few random dark feathers and an orangey
bill. A
friend got pictures that I'll share with anyone who's interested.
- A lone Tundra Swan seen Friday evening in the ponds along Colo 15 just
south of the old Refuge HQ, seen again flying the next morning.
- An extended flow of cranes from the south Sunday morning, apparently
they'd flown up overnight from the Bosque del Apache region. Line after line
(do we call them skeins when they're cranes?) of birds appearing as dust
flecks in binoculars trained on San Antonio Mountain, a new line appearing
every few seconds for the two hours I watched, getting closer and closer till
visible with the naked eye. I've seen the feeding flocks and flyouts many
times over the years, but this is the first time I've experienced a
massive influx of cranes migrating up from the south. It was something to
behold.

[cobirds] With Apologies to Mr. Poe...

Once upon this morning dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chimney capping...

heard, for the first time this year, a Northern Flicker drumming on the
chimney cap of my little townhouse in west Centennial. Seems hormones are

[cobirds] Cruisin' for Cottontails

Hello Fellow Birders,

Yesterday evening, around 7pm, I was driving about 30 mph down a street
in my neighborhood when a Cooper's hawk overtook and passed me, going 35?
- 40? mph at about 3 feet off the ground and parallel to me about 10 feet
to my left. She was flying easily, an occasional flap-flap and mostly
glide. I watched as she went on ahead straight down the street, then made a
left turn at a side street and continued down that street till I lost sight of
her. The streets around here are bordered by lawns and we've had a bumper
crop of bunnies this year. I'm guessing she was hoping to pick one up for
dinner.

[cobirds] Spotted Towhee in west Centennial, Arapahoe County (Denver Metro Area)

2016-05-07 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

I was chatting on the phone ~ 7pm last night (Friday, May 6), when I
heard that distinctive "Drink, Drink, Drink your tea-ea-ea-ea" song. I heard
it a couple of times before it registered that I was hearing a towhee in
my little townhouse yard near Holly & Arapahoe in west Centennial. An hour
or so later I also heard it call, then sing some more. Never did see it.

I have occasionally seen a towhee in my yard in the winter months, and
had one here pretty regularly the past winter. I suspect this is that same
bird, apparently it lost its map and doesn't know the way back to the
foothills.

[cobirds] Spotted Towhee & Bushtits in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

2015-09-29 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Bushtits are usually year-round denizens of my neighborhood near Holly
& Arapahoe, but they were missing in action all summer till about a week
ago when I heard a good-sized flock moving through the area. Today they
finally deigned to stop by my yard and get a little suet.

A single Spotted Towhee also visited my yard today. I typically see
one each Fall, though usually much later than this. If the past forecasts
the future this bird will stick around a few days then be gone.

[cobirds] Unexpected Birds in West Centennial, Arapahoe County

2015-07-20 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

My little townhouse yard near Holly Arapahoe in west Centennial has
had three unexpected visitors the past three days. A White-breasted
Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee and what I believe is a juvenile Chipping Sparrow
have all been hanging around since Saturday.

I host a couple of Mountain Chickadees here throughout the winter and
rarely hear or see a White-breasted Nuthatch in the neighborhood, but to
have these three show up simultaneously mid-summer has been unique.

[cobirds] Tail-less Birds

2015-06-21 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Every once in a while I see a House Finch with no tail feathers at my
feeders. I've wondered about it, but never gave it very much thought till
this year, when I noticed other species with the same condition.

This Spring/early summer I've seen an American Crow in my neighborhood
(who on first glimpse made me think Black Vulture!), a Mourning Dove in
my yard, and a Black-billed Magpie about 2 miles from my house, all of whom
had no tails. Now they have me wondering why birds of various species
occasionally lose all their tail feathers at once. It's obviously not their
typical molt pattern. I've not seen missing primaries or secondaries, and in
the dove which I could observe up close over many days I didn't see
problems or 'baldness' on the body of the bird; and it has since grown in a
new
set of retrices.

If anyone has theories or factual knowledge of why birds might lose all
their tail feathers at once I'd love to hear what they are. Thanks!

[cobirds] Stumped by Bird Song in Yuma County

2015-06-02 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Sunday I encountered a bird song that I can't figure out. The bird was
in a small grove of some green/some decadent deciduous trees, all that
remains of an old farmstead about 25 miles SSE of the town of Yuma and about
20 miles WNW of Idalia.

It was a simple, seven note song, short whistles in two alternating
pitches. First note was higher, second lower, third higher, etc., ending on
the high note. It reminded me of a Tufted Titmouse Peter song but slower
and always seven notes. I never got a good look at the bird, the only
'jizz' I got was it seemed about the size of a tanager or large finch and
seemed to have a seed-eater's bill.

Any suggestions or ideas would be gratefully received, please contact
me off-list.

   Thanks!

[cobirds] Bluebird Monitoring Class - Denver Metro Area

2015-03-10 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds

The folks at the Colorado Bluebird Project are planning to host an
educational session for anyone interested in monitoring nestboxes and/or
learning
about bluebirds in general. It will be held at the Audubon Center at the
south end of Chatfield State Park (no Parks Pass required) on Saturday,
March 21st, from 10 AM till Noon. We will have a 45-minute presentation on
the
birds' nesting cycle, nestbox design and installation, nest monitoring
protocols, reporting to Cornell's NestWatch database, handling problems and
predators, etc. We will also show a 10-minute nestcam video that shows the
entire nesting cycle inside the nestbox, from nest-building to fledging.
There will be display boxes containing the nests and eggs of various box
users such as bluebirds, tree swallows, etc., a variety of literature to
peruse, and we will have the best nestboxes in the world available for sale
(we
know they're the best because we made them!) There will be several
experienced nestbox monitors available to chat with and answer your questions.

Refreshments will be served.

Please RSVP to 303.973.9530 so we know how many chairs to set out and
how many cookies to bake!

Directions to the Audubon Center from C-470 and Wadsworth: Drive south
on Wadsworth about 4.4 miles, just to the point where it starts turning
west. Turn left onto Waterton Road. Drive about 100 yards and make the
first left at the large stone sign that says: Audubon Center at Chatfield
State Park / Discovery Pavilion.

For those of you who have a group of folks interested in setting up and
monitoring nestboxes, but are not in the Denver area or just can't attend
on the 21st, we can also bring our 1-hour program to you at no cost to you.

[cobirds] Birds at Roxborough State Park, Jefferson Co. on Tues, 9/9 and Mon Evening, 9/8

2014-09-09 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
A few birds of note from my hike on the Fountain Valley trail today, Sept
9, not including the usual suspects:

- I put up a flock of ?200? chipping sparrows on the west leg of the loop
just north of the fork. I glassed about 20, did not see anything but
chippies.

- As I was glassing 2 Cooper's hawks circling above I noticed swarms of
small birds far above them, silhouetted against the overcast. Too small to
see with the naked eye, I guessed by their general shape and behavior they
may have been cliff swallows. They were flying in disorganized patterns as
if they were hunting insects, moving in a general northerly direction. They
covered a large area of the sky, perhaps a tenth of it, and I would guess
there may have been thousands of them up there.

- A lone Swainson's hawk grabbed some air over the Dakota hogback and
circled up to several hundred feet, then broke off and made a beeline due
south. I watched it till it disappeared from view, and I had a broad view of
the sky. I guess not all Swainson's migrate in flocks.

Monday evening the folks on the moonlight hike (Ha! dark as pitch with
thick cloud cover) were serenaded by upwards of 4 poorwills.

[cobirds] Followup on New Species on BBS Routes in South-, Central- and North-Eastern Colo

2014-06-04 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Again,

Following up on my post this past Tuesday in which I asked for ID help
on birds I'd seen on my BBS routes...

Quite a few people reviewed the pictures I had of what I thought might
be an Ash-throated Flycatcher in Baca County and what I thought might be a
Hooded Oriole in Kit Carson County. The consensus was that the
Ash-throated Flycatcher ID was correct and the Hooded Oriole ID was not - the
bird is
actually a first-year male Orchard Oriole.

I thank everyone who helped me on this. Over a dozen people responded,
which I think speaks volumes to the remarkable nature of the folks on this
listserv.

[cobirds] New Species on BBS Routes in South-, Central- and North-Eastern Colorado

2014-06-03 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
I just finished my BBS Routes in Baca, Kit Carson Yuma Counties, had a
few surprises including two birds I need identification help on.

Baca County south of Springfield was very wet and produced the biggest
surprise: an ephemeral lake near County Roads N and 42 that held a
Canvasback, an Avocet, 3 Wilson's Phalarope and 5 Blue-winged Teal; all new
species for the Edler BBS Route. Later I saw what I believe to be an
Ash-throated Flycatcher at County Roads N and 1/2 mile east of 32, another new
species
for the route and one I need help ensuring I got it right before I report
it. I did get a couple of pictures of it, not great, but I think good
enough to be diagnostic.

Kit Carson County east of Burlington, despite winds in the mid-20-mph
range all morning, produced a ton of Lark Buntings along with a few Blue
Grosbeaks, Orchard Orioles and Brown Thrashers. The new bird for the
Burlington Route was a Hooded Oriole in a small clump of trees (which also
produced 2 of the thrashers and 1 of the grosbeaks), on County Road 57 between
CR's JJ KK. This oriole is the other new species that I need help in
identifying, I have a few pictures of it as well.

Yuma County southeast of the town of Yuma failed to produce two of my
favorite 'semi-regulars', Greater Prairie Chicken and Upland Sandpiper.
Lark Buntings were rather scarce but it seems to be a banner year up there for
Lark Sparrows, they were everywhere. I was surprised to see 2 Northern
Rough-winged Swallows on County Road 10 between CR's Y.5 and AA; though
they'd been seen on the Abarr Route sometime in the past I hadn't seen any in
all the years I've run the route.

On the way home I got good looks at a male Baltimore Oriole in fine
breeding plumage, at the bridge on US 36 over the Arickaree 'River' at the
east/south end of the town of Cope in Washington County. He had a singing
male Bullock's Oriole for company.

Please, if you would be willing to render an opinion on the ATFL and/or
HOOR please let me know and I'll email you my pictures off-line. Thanks!
