Re: [cobirds] Hummingbirds

I had my first hummer of the year on Friday evening in Fort Collins. It
was a female-type Broad-winged (no whistle as it flew) and was seen around
6PM near Whedbee and Prospect in a friend's backyard.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds, Boulder County

2019-11-19 Thread Paula Hansley
CObirders,
I was standing in my front yard at
10 am when two hummingbirds flew into my crabapple and catalpa trees. They were
chipping loudly. I instantly recognized the chips as hummingbird sounds. The
chips were very similar to those of the Broad-tailed Hummingbird, as recorded
by Sibley.

I stood there listening to them for several minutes but never saw them before
they flew away.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds at Audubon Nature Center

2018-07-13 Thread 'Bea Weaver' via Colorado Birds
Yesterday all four Colorado hummingbird species were seen at the Nature Center
in Waterton Canyon. Both the Rufous and Calliope males were present plus our
two breeders: Broad-tailed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds. The immatures are
here too, making their IDs difficult if not often impossible. Most action is
in the native plant garden behind the Nature Center under the last tree. Last
year’s site has some small feeders, but raccoons were a problem here earlier,
so some feeders were moved. Humans have been a problem also, stealing three
large feeders and accessories; Nature Center volunteers donated replacements.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds in Wild Display

2017-08-08 Thread mvjohnski
Well it has been a very exhilarating time watching and photographing the
fall migration of hummingbirds through the San Luis Valley. Based on
numbers alone, this year seems to have surpassed most other years by far! I
had numbers of 20 birds buzzing the feeders and vying for feeder
domination. The species include Broad-tailed, Rufous, and Calliope.
Strangely, we rarely see Black-chinned in the Valley proper. The birds are
extremely challenging to photograph and are actually faster than
"autofocus", which creates challenges in and of itself. Anyway, I thought
you might enjoy seeing them at my website. johnrawin...@zenfolio.com under
"Recent Additions". Enjoy the rapidly changing fall season. Numbers of
hummers have declined since last night!

[cobirds] hummingbirds and other migrants and residents

2014-09-14 Thread 'arvind panjabi' via Colorado Birds
Today I woke up to a mini-fallout in my yard with lots of yellow-rumped
warblers and robins, plus 2 orange-crowned warblers, 1 Townsend's warbler, 3
blue-gray gnatcatchers, 1 yellow warbler, 1 western tanager, 1 green-tailed
towhee. I only got to watch them for a few minutes. There were probably others
but they all suddenly left in a big whoosh.

Yesterday was a four-jay-day here. Scrub, blue, steller's and a single pinyon
jay at my feeders. To top it off, a Clark's Nutcracker also visited my yard
yesterday, not seen here since early June, which was also unusual.

I've seen several posts eluding to late hummingbirds, but my feeders have never
been this busy all year as they are right now, with as many as 15 or more here
on friday and saturday. Today there seem to be fewer, but still at least 6-8.
The make-up has been mostly young broad-taileds, but within the last week I
have seen individual young/female rufous, black-chinned and calliope.

Old news: Its been a while since I've
reported anything on cobirds lately, but it hasn't been for a lack of
interesting birds around this fall. Its been a decent migration overall,
starting off way back in July with good numbers of Bullock's orioles passing
through (8-10/day). They were all but gone by early august, when an
olive-sided flycatcher stopped briefly to flycatch in my
yard, followed by large numbers (like 6+ at a time) of western tanagers,
especially in late august. Black-head grosbeak numbers were also good this
year, with 3-4 in the yard on any given day, until late august. A single
Evening Grosbeak was heard labor day weekend. A hairy woodpecker has been
around off and on since late august, as has a red-breasted nuthatch - or
perhaps these have been different birds over time. they are still seen
regularly. Other migrants this fall include a macgillivray's warbler,
white-crowned sparrow, and a spectacular swallow flight (barn, cliff and
violet-green) on labor day. I have not seen/heard many crossbills lately, in
constrast to reports in town. Spotted Towhee's have been coming through in
good numbers, with mostly juveniles starting about 2 weeks ago, and now mostly
adult males (6-7 in the yard). Oddly enough, i have yet to detect a Wilson's
warbler in the yard this fall.

2014-07-28 Thread Pam Piombino
*PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME!*

*Saturday, August 2, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.*

Hummingbirds and a Potluck!

We will start the day by meeting at the Park and Ride in Lyons (7600 Niwot
Road), for a walk along Old South Road for a look at resident breeders.
Birds commonly found here are Canyon Wrens, White-throated Swifts,
Catbirds, Orioles and Grosbeaks. Then, it will be on to Davis’s feeding
stations at his beautifully located home in Spring Gulch. There, we can
count on at least three species of Hummingbirds and maybe four:
Broad-tailed, Rufous, Calliope and even Black-chinned.
His feeders and nest boxes attract many other foothills species, including
Nuthatches, Bluebirds and Pinion Jays. Stay to share a relaxing pot luck
while you enjoy these flying jewels. Bring something inspired and
nutritious to share. Questions?

Ira lives in the foothills near/(in?) Golden, Tina on the east/northeast
side of Marston reservoir. But I am distinctly further out on the plains in
Centennial, near Orchard and Colorado Blvd. So my feeder today had the four
expected species of hummingbirds...calliope (one yesterday, another two
today), rufous, broad-tailed, and black-chinned. Never as many as Tina's
numbers, but feeding times correspond...many for a brief visit as the sun is
up, intermittent visits during the day, many more visits from about two
hours until 45 minutes before sunset.
A great proportion of the black-chinneds are imm males.

We had our first broad-tailed hummingbird at our feeder in Evergreen (Floyd

[cobirds] Hummingbirds - Larimer County

Today at our feeders we've had male and female broad tail, male
black-chinned and male calliope hummingbirds. Black-chinned about on
schedule, calliope seems very early.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds!

2012-04-18 Thread Julie R.
Hey all!

Heard my first Broad-tailed Hummer in Fort Collins today in the garden
off of Lake St. Has anyone else heard them around yet?
If hearing a Black-capped Chickadee doesn't make you smile, a hummer
sure will.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds in Weld county residence

2010-07-19 Thread Norma Erickson
This is proving to be an unusual year in my yard for hummers. It is early for
Hummingbirds in my yard. Since last Wednesday, July 15, I have seen 4 different
individuals. The first was Thursday, a very aggressive Rufus that I assumed was
a male. Friday a very calm Rufus male visited the sugar water for about 3 hours
straight. Over the week-end about Saturday, I saw the Rufus fly with a green
backed, (I assume a Coliope, as I get them about now.) Today another hummer
surprised me by flying out of the flower bed and has not been back yet. It had
a green back. That was all that I could see clear without binocs. The Oriole
families are still coming to the sugar water. So there is some color in my yard.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds, Orioles and Yellow-headed Blackbirds in Huerfano County

2010-04-30 Thread Beverly
Just a note for whomever is interested in such things: While the
Broad-tails arrived same day as last year, the Black-chins seemed a
day or two late...but they are here.

Last night I came home from work, dropped my stuff off and walked
through the house and came around the corner nearly came face-to-face
with the most beautiful, male Bullock's Oriole I've ever seen. He was
at a nectar feeder just outside my kitchen window (I always drill out
every other port for the orioles) and stayed several minutes. He was
so richly colored, his chest looked as orange as burning embers; a
warm russet so bright, one could hardly call it yellow.

And this morning, I watched a couple Yellow-headed Blackbirds feeding
with the other black, feeding machines. Even the blasted Brown-headed
Cow Birds are here, I'm sorry to say.

Oh, and the vultures have taken up roosting in the tree in my front
yard. While that is somewhat disconcerting, at least I regularly get
up-close and personal views of them as they come across the yard, low
and slow.

This time last year I also had lots of Lesser Goldfinch (black-
backed), both Rose-breasted and Black-headed Grosbeaks joining the
Evening Grosbeaks that have been here for quite awhile, Lazuli
Buntings and Mourning Doves.Everybody is late to my yard this
year! I sure do miss the pretty little doves! It's hard to believe
the upstart Eurasians aren't pushing them out. I hope the White-
wings are able to push back a bit.

[cobirds] hummingbirds galore, Louisville

2009-08-25 Thread Paula Hansley
All morning numerous hummingbirds have been coming to my feeders and plants,
such as Hyssop, Agastasche(?), butterfly bushes, etc. They also love to
perch in the large catalpa tree i my front yard where they preen and chip to
each other. All that I have been able to see are female/immature
Broad-tailed hummers. I have had to work so I have missed seeing many of
them.
Listen and look: I suspect they have descended into town all over this
area. I usually hear them before I see them.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds --Lakewood

2009-08-16 Thread markchavez
This year's hummingbird fall migration started with very low numbers in my yard
in Lakewood. I only had a few sightings of the male Rufous and a Calliope that
stayed for a week in late July and early August. Even the numbers of
Broad-tails and Black-chinned seemed lower than usual. But, in the last week,
the numbers of immatures and females has really increased. We still have had
extremely low numbers of Rufous though! In order of abundance:

Black-chinned ( males and females)
Broad-tailed (male and female)
Calliope ( a few female/immature)
Rufous (one female/immature !)

[cobirds] Hummingbirds - Migration Expectations

2009-08-03 Thread Ron Green
I am wondering if anyone has any inputs on how long the mature male
hummingbirds will remain in Colorado, specifically Colorado Springs? For
example, last year by 8/20 most of them had already left my feeders and what
were left were females and juveniles. The reason I am asking is that a
Naturalist and Professional Photographer friend of mine from Minnesota, who
is working on a HB book, wants to stop by for a few days on his way to
Arizona to photograph HB's. He is in need of some of the Colorado mature
male species. He is planning on arriving on 8/18. So I am wondering if he
comes at that time will he be arriving too late? Or, has the migration
window shifted from last year and is expected to happen later? Any inputs
would be greatly appreciated.

[cobirds] Hummingbirds: ad.m. Calliope,still

2009-08-03 Thread Tina Jones

Hi all,

It sounds like everyone is enjoying the hummingbirds as much as I am.

I do not have as many hummingbirds as in years past, probably because there are
so many flowers in the high country.

BUT: on 8/2 and 8/3, I have had one ad. m. Calliope

8/2 8/1, one female Black-chinned Hummingbird, and one ad. m. Rufous, and 2
Broad-tailed Hummingbird

8/3 : one imm. m. Black-chinned who has gorgeous purple flecking coming into
his gorget area[this makes 2 Black-chinned in the yd. as of today]. One ad. m.
Rufous who is zipping all the birds, and 1, imm. m. Rufous.

Several f. and imm. Calliope. And :

2-3 Broad-tailed Hummingbirds [ad. f. and immatures]

I think the ad. m. Calliope might be here tomorrow, but you never know. He goes
to the backyard feeder [next to the clothes line], but he does not come in all
the time because the Rufous is so aggressive. My hummers feed alot on the
plants also.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Hummingbirds in Colorado Springs

2009-07-21 Thread birdingspacepig
Just wanted to chime in regarding hummingbirds. I've had broad-tails for quite
some time, but on Saturday morning had both a rufous and a calliope (both male)
show up. They've all been back every morning and every evening too. I just love
watching the little guys!

[cobirds] Hummingbirds - Douglas County

2009-07-21 Thread Kirk Huffstater - Creative Gardenscapes
I spent some time today studying the hummingbirds around my yard, of which
there are many! It appears they all survived last night's torrential rains
hail in fine shape (unlike some of my vegetable garden). It's hard to know how
many there are of the various species, but there are at least as many as
reported below, and probably more. I'm attempting to get various photos of
each, with mixed success so far.(p) indicates at least decent photos
obtained. They're frequenting my 4 feeders, but are also attending many
different flower species around the yard as well.

Broad-tailed 3 females/juveniles(p) 3 adult males(p) ... found 2
separate nests earlier in the summer
Rufous 1 female/juvenile 2 adult males(p) ... males being very
aggressive causing lots of trouble for the others
Calliope 1 female/juvenile(p) 1 adult male(p) ... tiny, quiet
unassuming
Black-chinned 1 adult male ... seen only briefly, and never relocated
after being chased off by another hummer

What an exciting time of the season for hummers!!!

Good Birding,
