OpenMoko FOSDEM2008

2008-01-18 Thread Juan Luis Prieto Martinez
Hi all,

First of all hi to everybody, because it is the fist post that I send,
althougth I have been joined in the list since 4 or 5 months ago.

In a few weeks ago some of you spoke about going to the FOSDEM 2008 like you
did last year (where I knew something about openmoko), but that thread seems
to be in standby, because anybody has sent anything else about it. You were
talking about going with a alpha or beta (sorry if it is not the correct
term) of the new GTA02 with wifi and the last version of the OS. How is this
going?

Also, you know that there every body is going to talk about the iphone and
other smartphones, don't you think that could be a good idea to make a
debate about this kind of devices and see how can we make the NEO1973 a
strong and atractive competitor in this market? For sure I think that this
initiative is one of the best in the last times because of all the people
that collaborate in FLOSS projects I know it because it is my current job.

So, tell me what do you think about this and if it is possible to prepare
it, I think that it could be very interesting.

Best regads

R: CAD files for the case of the Neo will be made available

2008-01-18 Thread Michele Manzato
Having used it for some time, my impression is that Blender is a 3d modeler
which is very much focussed on rendering, while other aspects of 3d design
are weak (e.g. keeping control over measurement - no quotation lines).

The user interface is unconventional, it is based on a coordinated use of
keyboard + mouse takes some time to get used to - actually, I was never able
to master it properly.

If one wants to do serious CAM then one is better off with something else.
Or perhaps export from blender e.g. to autocad. But it is perfectly ok to
test conceptual designs.

Just my twopence.

I'm happy to hear further confirmation back so soon. Hopefully it
won't take too much longer to get the files. DXF files
 should also be fine.
I know of several free editors that can import these
 natively or with
a plugin (although not all of them export dxf files).

What is your favorite Linux CAD tool for actual 3D work?

This would be excellent information to add to the wiki.

I am not a CAD designer, but I work with many designers and
 machinists.
Of course none of them are Linux users.

I did a little research and found many commercial products
for Linux. I presume we are more interested in FOSS CAD tools.

The one that stood out to me was Blender. It's designed for
much more, but 3D CAD is a solid part of its job.

My girlfriend is a product designer. I gave her a Linux
computer with Blender installed in the hopes that she will
figure out how to use Blender and then teach me. Her initial
impression was that Blender is excellent for this kind of work.

OM on a non-neo divice: HTC Himalaya

2008-01-18 Thread Esra Kummer

Hi all

I got an HTC Himalaya (as well known as: Qtek 2020, i-mate PDA, O2 Xda
II, Krome Navigator, T-Mobile MDA II, Orange SPV M1000, Vodafone
WirelessPDA, Dopod 696 and movistar TSM500) for free. Unfortunatelly
there is WindowsMobile Edition installed. Yeah i know...

Thatswhy I would like to change it. I found in the wiki that the HTC
Magican is supported
(http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/OpenMoko-supported_hardware)

Has anyone some information or better success with the HTC Himalaya as
well? I really would love to have OM (I'm a student, so no money for a
Neo :( ).

How does it work? I would need it productive (just phonecalls, SMS and
adressbook needed) or in the worst case I take it to play (if i can
install OM but can't use it productive) and try to get a Nokia 3210 for
normal use :P

Is it difficul/dangerous to install? I have no money to let flash a
bricked phone.

Thx for any hints.

I lauched the kernel with haret, and booted from an ext2 256 MB SD card (a
rootdelay option is needed on the kernel command line)

So, this gives me a wince-openmoko dual boot :)

With the 624 MHz pxa270, the speed is fine, kinetic scolling works like a
charm, and the whole UI is very reactive :)

Congratulations.

 but...

The problem is, hx4700 has no GSM modem, while openmoko keeps searching for
 a network.

I think it is the openmoko-dialer2 doing that.

So I get a full list of status messages at the bottom of the window, that
are very annoying. Do you have any idea to remove them? I tried to stop
/etc/init.d/gsmd, but it's not running. I guess I have to stop a gsm status
applet, but I don't know how to do this.
Here is an example: http://www.yaronet.com/mirari/BQ69 : Not searching
blocks displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Do you have any idea on how to map the hx4700 power button to the openmoko
shutdown/suspend command, so that I can save battery life? I'll ask
questions on the handhelds-hx4700-port mailing list too, but I need to know
how buttons are managed in OM before I ask them how to achieve this !

Doesn't it work when you press the power button for a long time?
OpenEmbedded already had a patch to neod to do that:
http://www.openembedded.org/repo/org.openembedded.dev/packages/openmoko2/neod_svn.bb
http://www.openembedded.org/repo/org.openembedded.dev/packages/openmoko2/neod/ipaq.patch
and since revision 3348 it is contained in upstream neod.

Ah, last problem (and a minor one), at boot up I see on the fb console that
some jffs2 mount operation is not happy with my flash (of course, it's full
of wince and not jffs2 :) ) . I guess this is an init script trying to mount
some inexistent partition. Can I disable this?
 Here is the screenshoot: http://www.yaronet.com/mirari/1RMS
Cowardly refusing to erase blocks... fine, I didn't loose my wince image :D

Try removing the line containing jffs2 from /etc/fstab.

Nobody has been working on Himalaya kernel support for quite some
time, so a little bit of kernel work might be needed. The best way to
get some help is jumping into #htc-linux on freenode at the right
time.
Basically you'd have to build a Himalaya kernel (from handhelds.org
CVS) and boot it with HaRET
(http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HaRET).

Has anyone some information or better success with the HTC Himalaya as
well? I really would love to have OM (I'm a student, so no money for a
 Neo :( ).

As far as I know, Himalaya has the same phone chipset as both Neo and
Magician (and Blueangel), and I think hardware-wise it is more similar
to Blueangel (see
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Himalaya,
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/Himalaya), as it is based on
PXA263.

How does it work? I would need it productive (just phonecalls, SMS and
adressbook needed) or in the worst case I take it to play (if i can

I don't think it is ready for productive use yet.

Is it difficul/dangerous to install? I have no money to let flash a

Difficult? Probably. Only if some kernel work is needed.
Dangerous? No, unless you write something to the flash memory _on
purpose_. To the PXA263's internal 32MB NOR flash we could write, but
for the external M-Systems DoC chip I believe we don't even have
drivers capable of doing that.

OK not really but...

You should give a try!

BRLCAD wasn't completely free - you had to send a physical letter to
whatever gov't department that was, to state that you are a US
citizen, and promise not to export the software, or something like
that. It's good if one can just download and use it now. I will have
to try it. I have some experience with Autocad but it was a long time
ago (version 10 mostly), and it's so expensive to get a modern
version. I'd like to try SolidWorks too, but that's even worse - it's
not affordable at all unless you make your living with it.

A zip archive of our CAD/case schematics/dimensional drawings files is

Welcome to OpenMoko, Barry!

All you need to do is flash a new kernel and file system. Get the
latest from

Good luck and let us know how it goes,

Hi Michael,

Another little difficulty:
on that site, there are Snapshot images which are clearly labelled gta01
and gta02.

But how do I tell which are the gta01 out of pairs carrying only
identifiers such as svnr3801 and svnr3874 ?

Hi Clare,

Those would be the kernel images, and the same images work for both
GTA01 and GTA02.

Re: OpenMoko on hx4700

2008-01-18 Thread Sébastien Lorquet

 Hi Sébastien,

On Jan 18, 2008 11:58 AM, Sébastien Lorquet [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Hi all,

I managed to build OpenMoko with MokoMakefile for hx4700 (make setup,
 change
machine to hx4700 in local.conf, make openmoko-devel-image, all went
 fine).
Then I tried to run it.
I lauched the kernel with haret, and booted from an ext2 256 MB SD card
 (a
rootdelay option is needed on the kernel command line)

So, this gives me a wince-openmoko dual boot :)

With the 624 MHz pxa270, the speed is fine, kinetic scolling works like
 a
charm, and the whole UI is very reactive :)

 Congratulations.

  but...

The problem is, hx4700 has no GSM modem, while openmoko keeps searching
 for
  a network.

I think it is the openmoko-dialer2 doing that.

I edited the file /etc/matchbox/session or something like that and removed
the gsm applet. This is now ok :)

So I get a full list of status messages at the bottom of the window, that
are very annoying. Do you have any idea to remove them? I tried to stop
/etc/init.d/gsmd, but it's not running. I guess I have to stop a gsm
 status
applet, but I don't know how to do this.
Here is an example: http://www.yaronet.com/mirari/BQ69 : Not searching
blocks displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Do you have any idea on how to map the hx4700 power button to the
 openmoko
shutdown/suspend command, so that I can save battery life? I'll ask
questions on the handhelds-hx4700-port mailing list too, but I need to
 know
how buttons are managed in OM before I ask them how to achieve this !

Doesn't it work when you press the power button for a long time?
OpenEmbedded already had a patch to neod to do that:

 http://www.openembedded.org/repo/org.openembedded.dev/packages/openmoko2/neod_svn.bb

 http://www.openembedded.org/repo/org.openembedded.dev/packages/openmoko2/neod/ipaq.patch
and since revision 3348 it is contained in upstream neod.

Oh yeah sorry, I did not push long enough :)
The menu shows up, but nothing happens when I hit shutdown.
update: after a few seconds I get an openmoko splash screen with a scolling
bar, that scolls, stop, and nothing more !
update2: after more time I get some kernel console messages saying tmpfs is
busy
update3: nothing happens after this. The kernel+his console are still alive,
and no shutdown occurs.
This item is for the hx4700 mailing list, I think.

Ah, last problem (and a minor one), at boot up I see on the fb console
 that
some jffs2 mount operation is not happy with my flash (of course, it's
 full
of wince and not jffs2 :) ) . I guess this is an init script trying to
 mount
some inexistent partition. Can I disable this?
  Here is the screenshoot: http://www.yaronet.com/mirari/1RMS
Cowardly refusing to erase blocks... fine, I didn't loose my wince image
 :D

Try removing the line containing jffs2 from /etc/fstab.

Ah thanks, it was trying to mount mtdblock3 /home . No more jffs2 warnings.

regards
 Philipp

lol.. concrete.. nice.. so a modern 'brick' phone.. :)

Anyone have access to useful manufacturing tools? I have friends with
CNC mills and lathes, and one with a water jet cutter. I have indirect
access to 3D printers. Anything else interesting out there?
I have a Roland MDX-15 machine and also a Sherline 5410 CNC Mill (less
than 12 month old) and have a number of 1/16th inch end mills which are
ok for fine work.. will be interested to look at the case models when
they come out...

Can you generate CAM paths with Blender?

That I don't know.
I don't think Blender does.. although you might be able to write a
plugin.. :)
It's for windows, but I've been evaluating MeshCAM
(http://www.grzsoftware.com/) for tool path generation from STL files
and it seems ok so far, but I've only used it handful of times..
