2 beginner questions

2007-11-05 Thread rakshat hooja
I just got my neo 1973 by mail today and I will try to flash the image and
load rootfs sometime in the evening. Just had a couple of questions as i am
new here.

1. Is there a place where the latest tested image and rootfs is available
for download. the wiki links to a number of files and one is not sure which
image matches the rootfs.
2. When I have connected the usb cable to a powered usb port and the neo is
switched off is it charging (there is no indicator)

thanks

Rakshat

PS i am going through the wiki but if there is a forum where these questions
have already been answered please guide me there so i don't mail the entire
list every time.

 Subject: Community Update GPS comments...
At the lowest level GPS runs hardware ranges or time offsets from
 each satellite.
This does not directly give you a position. Some significant
spherical trig is necessary to turn this into position.

A lot of (AGPS) phones only have that hardware and rely on some system
 software
(maybe not even on the phone) to turn that into a location. It makes
a lot of sense that if you
have a powerful CPU you don;t need to add another powerful CPU to
 turn this GPS
base band info into PVT (position velocity and time).

The second issue with GPS is that if you are going to take raw data
 and generate PVT then
you have to do the GPS limitations that keep the system from being a
 ballistic missile guidance
system IE you cant report position if altitude 60K ft and
velocity 1000 knots or some such.
So if you plan to sell such hardware in the US then unless it has
 these limits encoded
in a way that is not trivial to defeat it become a ITAR controlled
 munition.

It sounds like the origional GTA01 used a standard phone AGPS that
 does not directly calculate position,
a great technical solution, but it does not work in real partical US
 political world with the ITAR
 GPS restrictions.

for details on what it takes to calculate position from the raw data see:

The product page still says that it is quad band
http://openmoko.com/products-neo-base-00-stdkit.html

I think they will make the 850 version for the us market though I would
prefer an operational quad band neo 1973 finally (as in 2008 atleast)

No quad-band is a serious limitation, as it has been marketed since

I see now that the openmoko.com page has been updated to state that it is
 a
tri-band phone, not a quad-band phone - last night it clearly stated quad
 band.

I just wish this had been clearly identified 3 or 4 months ago.

FM radio reception on neo/openmoko and some other questions

2007-11-09 Thread rakshat hooja
1) Are there any working hacks for getting FM radio reception on the
neo 1973? Even the $35 (total for the unlocked phone that will work
with any network) Nokia phones have FM reception in india. This is a
must have option for the Neo to sell in India. Most phones use the
earplug cable assembly as their radio antenna. Is is possible to do
that in the neo?

  2) Will the GTA02 phone have the speaker phone option or is getting
call sound on the speakers something that can be done by editing
config files in openmoko?

3) Is it theoretically possible to print by directly connecting the
printer to the phone if the printer drivers are avaliable (at least
text files)

4) If someone writes a faxing application for openmoko should it not
be possible to use the phone as a mobile fax sending and recieving
unit?

Thanks

GTA02 processor speed

2008-01-03 Thread rakshat hooja
Gizmodo quotes an Open Moko press release and mentions that the GTA02 has a
500 MHz processor -

http://gizmodo.com/339965/openmoko-launches-neo-freerunner-open+source-smartphone-for-the-masses

Maintaining the overall look and feel of the developers' Neo 1973, the Neo
FreeRunner features hardware improvements such as 2D/3D graphics and a
faster 500MHz processor that boosts performance to enable video and audio
processing, as well as a new generation of mobile applications emerging from
the open source community.

On the other hand the Open Moko wiki mentions that the GTA02 uses the
Samsung S3C2442B chip capable of 400 MHz.

Has the chip been overclocked or the info on the wiki is wrong and needs to
be updated?

The devtools entry is a special one created at compile time. When you
'make install' Qtopia, .desktop file(s) get read and the information
gets stored in the database, as opposed to being on the filesystem.

There is a semi-ported terminal in the opieII sources. It needs much
work (ie.e compiles but does not run). Or, probably a better option, is
taking the kde konsole sources, and porting them

Power Management on Neo1973

2008-01-09 Thread rakshat hooja
Hi,
I have been following the improving power management conversation on
the IRC logs and on this list but am still not clear if it is only a
software problem (suspend issues, devices not shutting off when being closed
etc.)or there are Major hardware issues involved (I am talking about the
Gta1 devices not FreeRunner). Could someone from OM or FIC clarify this?

I have got calling and sms working pretty well (as in perfectly) for me when
using the qtopia image and if power management improved this could easily
become my only phone.

I think the whole point of this takeover is Qtopia. Yes, the Nokia N800
series internet tablet uses Maemo (based on gtk). Correct me if I'm wrong
but aren't most of Nokia's cell phones running Symbian? Maybe buying
Trolltech is cheaper than continually licensing Symbian? Plus they have a
hell of lot more control in the direction of Qtopia Qt.

 Hi community

right now OM is just getting established
but its fun to think ahead :-)

articles like this one highlight the role of server side apps to help
 mobile
 devices with high load tasks.

 http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/28/
 skyfire-browser-for-windows-mobile-is-game-changing-does-flash/

I am not sure but perhaps their business model is to offer a subscription
 service to users.

we can already see examples of other lower load apps for example
 thumbtribes
 (early stage beta see youtube)

there are many, many more coming i am sure perhaps whenever you move
 down a
road that is not in OpenStreetMap in the future data will automatically be
 collected

one way the community could help to develop these services is to
 collectively
provide a place for developers to host these services so that they are
 provided
 * cheaply
 * fast
 * always available
 * secure/easy login for nominated developers
 * funded by donation?

the advantages of having this all on OpenMokoServer will really draw the
 community together I think

Re: wiki editing suggestion

2008-02-19 Thread rakshat hooja

The wikimedia engine already creates a categories page. This is very much
like a index page (not exactly an index as it only shows pages tagged with
that category and not every instance when that
text/concept/person/event/item has been reffed to). Maybe you can have a
copy of the categories page as the starting point of the index page.

My personal opinion is that putting proper category tags, putting
improvement/verification/editing reguired tags (a la wikipedia) and
improving search would be a better option than restarting with the index
 page.

video/graphics on GTA02

2008-03-25 Thread rakshat hooja
I was going through the hardware specs of the GTA02 once again and was
wondering about the possible performance improvements because of the faster

I had three specific questions -

1) will 30 fps VGA res playback be possible?
2) will it be possible to have 2d transition effects (like MAC OS/ Vista) be
possible on the GUI without noticiable wait times.
3) Is any form of 3D acceleration support possible in the future for games?

I feel that the VGA screen is the feature distinguisher that the FreeRunner
has and the graphics should make full use of it.

openmoko sales in India

The discounter price for the first 40 single orders is Rs 15399/-. (USD 388
at a dollar of 39.7 - we pay a surcharge over that to the bank when we buy
the dollars). And we are including shipping, customs and taxes and warrenty
in this price. This is a loss making price for idasystems but we want
feedback from the first 40 buyers to make sure it works on all Indian GSM
networks, provide gprs scripts for all the providers etc.

The prices you are quoting are from the unupdated website (when the
Freerunner was expected to be priced at USD 450 not 399. You many need to
refresh the page or clear the browser cashe.

We will announce the final market price once we have negotiated our bulk

Re: Freerunner Sale Price in India - Official partner with Openmoko

2008-05-06 Thread rakshat hooja

 Shakthi,

I have been using GTA01 (Neo 1973) my main phone for some time and felt
that at its price point (under INR 12000 for GSM and GPS and VGA display) it
would make a great phone for the Indian market. Unfortunately with its power
draining problems (I carry 2 spare batteries in my pocket) it can not be
mass produced (My initial email to Micheal was about reselling the GTA01 in
India).

Anyway the good part is that the Openmoko and Qtopia software is GPL and
porting these to a GSM only hardware should be considerably easier than
writing a new GSM stack! We have plans get it to run on the CompuLab X270em
board but thats kind of stalled at the moment. If that works out one can
bring out GSM only, GSM+GPS, GSM+WiFi and GSM+GPS+WiFi versions of a phone
running Openmoko.

Maybe after the success of the Freerunner (I am quite confident on that as I
have seen the software really improving over the last 6 months and the price
point is pretty decent too) Openmoko themselves may consider bringing out a
lower spec cheaper version.

Right now I think it would be best to support the Openmoko endevour and try
and make the Freerunner a great success, both at the market and as a
philosphy.

I would like to thank you guys for this initiative. It greatly eases
our shipping+customs+tax import issues. Yes, I have made my order :)

I just have one request. If you guys can strip the current model to
 just have 1. a GSM (say INR 5k, or USD 125) , or 2. a model with
GSM+GPS (with a reduced price, of course), it will be extremely useful
for the mass market in India. I would assume the GSM takes
one-fourth of the total price of the product. Not sure what is the
 proportion of the GPS component.

INR 20k (with four RF components) is quite affordable to most people
working in the Industry here in India, but, a basic, customizable
phone would be really something that will be usable, and affordable
 for the masses.

 Just my thoughts,

update - India sale of Freerunner

2008-05-08 Thread rakshat hooja
A big thank you for all those who pre-booked the Freerunner at the highly
discounted price of INR 15399/-. All the discounted slots are now full and
the Freerunner can now only be booked form our website at the actual retail
price of INR 20,000/- inclusive of shipping and all taxes. (In case there
are any cancellations by the discounted price buyers we will offer it to the
next customer on a first come first serve booking basis.)

Those who have booked will be receiving an update about their expected
shipping date in the next few days.

We do realise that there are students and developers out there in India who
would appreciate a discount on the Freerunner. We plan to offer a discount
for these categories in the future (write to me - rakshat at
idasystems.netfor more info on this) but at the moment we need to sell
the Freerunner at a
price that is commercially viable for us.

We also received a few queries from outside India. At the moment Ida is not
shipping the Freerunner outside India but I will look into it

Thanks once again

Re: Questions about Freerunner: Phone Usability, Battery Life, Shipping Date

2008-05-10 Thread rakshat hooja
Just to clarify the Rs 2/- price in India includes shipping to your
address in India, customs and VAT duties, a 30 days return policy (We added
to the Openmoko DOA return policy at our own risk as we want the initial
lots of phones to go to people who are aware that the software needs
polishing and are comfortable using the phone; this is something that no
other phone company is offering in India though is a norm abroad) and a one
year warranty ( we are again keeping 5% of our stock in reserve to deal with
warranty returns that can not be repaired that adds to our costs).

Keeping the above in mind Rs 2/- looks like a reasonable price.

On another note I have used the GTA01 as my main phone for some time and on
qtopia and (as far as I know) on mwester's suspend resume worked kernel I
don't get calls that don't wake up suspend as long as I do a full shut down
and boot up every morning.

Battery life is a problem (5-6 hours if you talk a lot or dont talk at all)
but I keep a spare battery and almost always am near a wall socket, car or
computer (HTC Universal chargers seem to work for me - not too sure if fast
charge is actually enabled but the phone charges up).

Subject: Re: Questions about Freerunner: Phone Usability, Battery Life,
 Shipping Date
 Hi,

I am located in India, and I have decided to go for Free-runner.
But, I am really wondering about why this phone is so costly?
Apple will be releasing the iPhone in India later this year.
This phone is likely to be priced much cheaper than free-runner
(free-runner is currently available for $500 in India).
Also, it looks to me that iPhone has much more features (it has 8 GB
memory - I could not see similar in Free-runner).
On a plus side, iPhone is fully tested. Their is official performance
 rating for each feature.

Why is the Free-runner cost so high?
With open-source development, the cost of devices should in fact come
down (that is my thinking - correct me if I am wrong). At least be at par
 with the commercial products.

Is the high cost due to the low volume production? Or something related
to the location of production units?
If the cost is high because of above (or similar) factors, I assume that
costs will come down in long run.
In such a scenario, does any one have a (rough) idea about what the final
 (appx) costs would be?
Will it be any better than the commercial products?

My interest in openMoko is purely from a developer's point of view (I
guess every one currently using it is has similar interests).
And the reason why I want to participate in open source development is
that I want technology to proliferate and become affordable to the common
 masses.
If this objective is not going to be satisfied, I am going to feel a bit
dis-appointed with the loss of time which I spend on my efforts.

Also, I really find the Free-runner too expensive just for the
development purpose. I am hoping that if I can use it as my cell-phone, I
can feel a little better. In case the phone is not practically usable (very
poor battery performance, or loosing networks, going to infinite sleep etc),
that will add to dis-appointment too.

Another possibility - is it that Free-runner is much beyond iPhone in
feature list (which I have failed to capture)?

porting OM on CompuLab X270em - volunteer wanted

2008-05-23 Thread rakshat hooja
We have a CompuLab X 270em evaluation kit along with 8 months support
contract remaining lying at our office. see -

http://www.compulab.co.il/all-products/html/eval-kits.htm#X270EM-EVAL

We had got the board with the purpose of trying to get the Openmoko phone
stack working on the hardware (it already runs Angstorm Linux). Due to
constraints at our end (main developer leaving and the company focusing on
other things) we are not able to carry the work forward.

We are looking for a volunteer or group who may wish to seriously carry the
work forward. We will ship the evaluation kit free of cost to him/ her and
list them with CompuLab as the developers availing of the support contract
as long as we know the person is very seriously interested in getting
Openmoko to work on the hardware and wiling to give periodic public updates
of their work.

The board will remain the property of Ida Systems and we may want it back
after the 8 months.

Interested people/ groups please email me off list on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

QVGA V/s VGA for GTA03 (was something about yummy CPU-GPU combos!)

2008-06-05 Thread rakshat hooja

quick question - would you prefer a qvga lcd (save a bit of cost) since
 we'e
going to need to software-drive all graphics - the fewer pixels you have
 to
fill, the better for speed. i'm really tossing up if the speed of qvga is
 worth
the loss of resolution. i'm just not sure.

I have a Sharp 903 with qvga, 2.4 inch, Nokia N95 with qvga, 2.4 inch and
the Neo 1973 with VGA, 2.8 inch. By far the best screen for reading is the
Sharp one. On closer examination you can see pixels which you dont on the
Neo but the display just feels better, crisper and better on the eyes. When
you view higher res photos the Neo display seems better but not by much. The
N95 is also good when you look at it on its own and one has no problems
reading anything but when kept next to the Neo 1973 and Sharp 903 one can
tell the display is not in the same league. (the Sharp is also visible in
the sun though I dont think its trans-reflective)

The point I am trying to make is that the quality of LCM being used matters
as much as qvga or vga. Qvga is sufficient for almost all needs on a mobile
phone size device and would be great if it provides cost and speed
improvements. But it has to be a really good quality QVGA.

Personally I love the resolution and form factor of the PSP Slim LCM and
would love to see something similar on GTA0X.

Re: resolution preferences??

2008-06-06 Thread rakshat hooja
The difference between the VGA screen of the Neo and the QVGA screens I have
are very clear to me (with the VGA being clearly superior) when kept side by
side. But for most of my activities including reading long emails the QVGA
resolution is enough. So unless we have the processing power to run at least
25 FPS VGA video, I would be happy with a QVGA as there is bound to be a
price and performance improvement.

If it is acceptable to use QVGA, couldn't that basically be done without

 scaling,
so couldn't you let SW treat the display as qvga, and just have the glamo
  scale it up?

Or, is the question more about having qvga instead of the glamo (which
leaves you back with the SDIO interface shortage)?

we can just drive the vga screen at qvga. no need for scaling - just change
 the
output at the lcd controller level. but it is a waste to pay for a vga
 screen
when we won't use it. also it does look blocky. it isn't about glamo or
 not -
it's separate to glamo entirely. simply - how important is a vga screen...
really? how many people out there can really see the difference? be really
honest. stop thinking my specs are bigger than your specs. scan u REALLY
 see
all the pixels on a vga screen of that size. i bet to most people its all a
blur - a qvga screen looks identical to them. only to a minority who have
 very
good eyesight does it really make a difference, but this is just my bet.
 i'm
asking the question - and hoping for real honest answers.

Would that be 320x240 (QVGA [1]) or 480x320?

qvga is 320x240. wqvga... that's a whole world of resolutions (400x240,

   etc.

also remember just getting supply of a screen is hard. you also need it

   a
   decent physical size.

i'm asking the question if going down to a (relatively) low resolution
   screen
   would be an ok compromise.

- create extra maintenance cost for system and app themes

one way or another we will need to be able to do multiple resolutions
 in
   the
   long-run.

- narrow on-screen information for people with good eye-sight
(granny won't be affected ;-)

Sofar I haven't suffered from lacking graphic speed on my
GTA01. It seemed that waiting for UI feedback was mainly
cause by other background processes (e.g. SD-read or such)
My interest are standard smartphone and geo apps and for
those I'd rather go for resolution.

again - it depends what you want to do. :) gta01 actually performance
   better in

Re: QVGA V/s VGA for GTA03 (was something about yummy CPU-GPU combos!)

2008-06-06 Thread rakshat hooja
I agree with you that the VGA screen is very important for marketing the
Freerunner - other comparable smartphones dont have that feature and are
certainly no where near in terms of DPI. I am also assuming that OM wont
discontinue the GTA02 (Freerunner) when GTA03 comes out. So mass market
customers will have the choice of the VGA screen and at a cheaper price the
QVGA screeen+camera. It helps OM as they have two distinct phones available
on the same platform, consumers have choice and resellers have two models at
two different price points.

But one question that needs to be answered is - what is the cost saving of
using a QVGA screen. It has to be significant to consider this option.

I have shown a QVGA Acer n30 and the VGA Neo on FOSDEM and LinuxTag to the

or even offer a resolution configuration option.

Carsten,
There is any posibility to change the screen resolution without reboot?
If we can do so we can dinamically change it to got the best of two worlds,
a high resolution for almost statical screens to webbrowsing, doc editing,
picture viewing, an a low resolution to mame, video playback(?), and
anything else doesn't fit on high res. It can be done?

People who want VGA can buy the Freerunner (GTA02) and who wish to pay less
can get GTA03 with QVGA with faster performance. This is good as it will
provide more choices on the OM phone stack and lead to the creation of a
QVGA gui (along with a VGA gui) that will make it easier for OM to be ported
to a number of existing devices also.

Remember Openmoko is not just about having a cool device to show off to

 bit
longer (as it is wide). it seems almost the perfect screen for a
smaller/slimmer model like gta04/05 etc. same # of pixels as the PSP
 screen,
but in a much smaller space.

Good enough for me if this gives faster performance :-). Need to check for
visibility in light and if that is better that the current VGA I vote for
this for the GTA04.

Re: Free Runner price vs iphone 3G price

2008-06-10 Thread rakshat hooja

No, it won't make the Moko more expensive.

You pay through the nose for it because you HAVETO sign up for a 2 year
 contract minimum.

The iPhone is AT LEAST twice as expensive as the Moko.

In other words, if the Moko came with a 2 year contract it would
 basically be free.

Please actually compare apples to apples.

 - Rob

I don't know where my NDA stands on this. (I dont have the signed copy back
yet and I guess i wont be posting any more on this once I get it:-) I
discussed with a carrier in India and they were as the first offer willing
to offer unlimitid data on GPRS/Edge and free incomming for *one year* for
about $70 (more than half their normal rate) if their connection is sold
with the Freerunner.

So a more logical comparison (if you have to compare prices) would be
*Freerunner
at $539 with two year unlimited data connection with the cost of the
I-phone+2 years unlimited data only connection* (I am not aware of the
prices as the I-phone plan pricing has not been announced in my country)

Sounds like you got stuck with the crappy US model contract. AFAIK it's
 only
the USA (and now India) where you pay to *receive* calls as well as make
them. Perhaps we're 'lucky' in Europe where inbound calls cost the callee
 nothing..

 Andy / ScaredyCat

No all incoming calls are free in India and most handsets are sold without
contract. This is a pay as you go (or prepaid) sim where they are willing to
offer India Rupees 250/per month (1 USD=43 Indian rupees) for unlimited data
and you can buy voice minuets as you like. what i meant by free incoming was
that the sim will remain active for one year even if you dont buy any
minuets at all and you can continue to receive free incoming calls for the
entire year.

The normal rate for unlimited data plan is between Indian Rupees Rs395-495 +
a basic rental of your contract (ranging between Rs 200 - 400 for normal
users). Outgoing calls cost are extra.

The Rs 250/month unlimited data was offered if we bundled their connection
with the
Freerunners we sold. At the moment we have no intentions of doing that as
most of the early buyers form us will be developers but may offer it (or a
better deal) as an *option *when mass market software is ready.

Re: Community contributions to core apps features. (Was: Terminal for ASU)

2008-07-26 Thread rakshat hooja

It is already linked from the front page, but clearly from not those
places it should be from :)

But you have good points. Openmoko is open, but its development is not
exposed in the open as much as I'd like for an open source project to
be. The Openmoko folks are still a bit mysterious to me, with the
exception of the few who regularly post on these mailing lists.

I think the line between Openmoko employee and a contributing, trusted
community member should be made more fuzzy. More SVN / GIT rights to
the people, more contributing directly to http://svn.openmoko.org/
instead of just external projects at projects.openmoko.org etc.

You are right but I think that the problem lies in the fact that Openmoko
has not been able to provide any entry point where new people joining the
list (after the release of the freerunner) can figure out who and where to
ask what question. The Openmoko people are pretty open and if you will ask
for something long enough you will get an answer/ access from them.
MichaelShiloh of Openmoko used to interface with the community and
answer their
questions after getting the information from the developers in a regular
community update. I think Steve and Michael still do that? Maybe we should
have a page on the wiki describing who does what at Openmoko and who to
address what question to and also an introductory email for new subscribers
listing out similar things.

It has been almost an year since I wrote my first email to Openmoko
(actually to Sean to which Michael Shiloh replied) I can assure you that
Openmoko people try their hardest to be open and responsive to community
suggestions/ questions. But often it takes time for the question/ request to
reach the correct person who can answer it / respond to it.

Re: Buzzing on GSM audio

 Belgium (JIMmobile)
and I also have this problem with the 2007.2 image, with our without wifi
 or gps
there isn't much static on my end,
but the volume is quite low
the other end also has low volume and when i increase his/her volume
 they get an echo

 https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support

I have an interesting observation to share. India still has old fixed copper
wire telephones (landlines) and when I call a landlines both sides seem to
be getting clear connections (no buzz and even the volume on the receivers
end is louder)

When calling a GSM mobile there is a buzz (sometimes, not always when I call
someone using my provider [Airtel in India] and almost always when calling
someone on another provider). Even more interestingly some people have
claimed that the volume and buzz is less when they call me. For example many
times I call someone, they will say that there is disturbance and that they
are going to cut the call and call me back. And when they call back they
report a clearer line.

I am using the latest Qtopia kernel and Rootfs.

Anyway I have started to use the Freerunner as my only phone so I will be
automatically testing the GSM buzz problem on each call!

Another approach I was thinking of was that if there is anyone on the list
who is not having the GSM buzz problem to please write in with their kernel,
rootfs and provider information.

Have you followed these instructions form the wiki

Note that running opkg upgrade on a factory-fresh phone will upgrade
dropbear (the ssh software) and various xserver packages, and neither
upgrades elegantly while in use. Xserver must be updated over ssh to
complete succesfully. Dropbear can be updated over ssh with the proper
command:

# nohup opkg upgrade dropbear

Or upgrade it directly in the FreeRunner terminal.

# opkg upgrade dropbear

When updating over ssh, the session will be interrupted, but the command
should complete successfully(check nohup.out on your device to verify), and
you should be able to reconnect within a few seconds.

Then connect to the FreeRunner via ssh and type:

# opkg upgrade

Recent changes to the usb ethernet support require that you install these
two modules, *before* you reboot, after updating.

# opkg install kernel-module-g-ether kernel-module-cdc-ether

And run this command :

# depmod

Sorry for the chain of posts, but when I bought the phone, IDA Systems
claimed it had a 500 MHz processor. Now they have corrected their website

Are we trying to promote openness here, or damage it?

Dear Nishit,

The 500MHz was based on early confusion based on the fact that the Samsung
processor is capable of 500 Mhz but is clocked at 400 Mhz.

The early buyers were offered 30 days return policy (we only get 28 days
dead on arrival from Openmoko) for the very reason that some buyers may not
like what the Freerunner offers. 30 days are over but in your case, as a
special consideration, if you are not satisfied with the Freerunner please
post it back to us and we will give you a full refund. We have limited
supply of the Freerunner and need devices to send as review samples.

Hope this will take you out of your misery a little.

 Regards,

 Rakshat

more Freerunner coverage in India

Living digital magazine has done a small write up on the Freerunner in their
current issue

A more detailed review is expected in their sister magazine, PC Quest, next

Also for those that missed it, Techtree had also published a detailed review

save the resolv.conf file (ctrl o)

 Hi All,

I added another column to indicate echo problems - I think it would be
good to get info on both of these issues.

With regard to buzz, do you think it is necessary to differentiate
between no buzz at all, always buzz, and buzz only with headset? My
understanding was that using a headset also has an influence.

Have also added WSOD - the page may need to be renamed and linked from other

my problem is that the eth0 device (interface) is not present on the
 system:

 # ls /sys/class/net/
 /sys/class/net/lo//sys/class/net/usb0/

therefore i am unable bring up the eth0 interface i.e:

 # /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up
 ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

on my friends device with the same system and kernel the eth0 interface
is brought up and we can see it in /sys/class/net/eth0/ and also it can
be brought up with the ifconfig command.

 any help would be appreciated

Re: Bad Customer support from Truebox.com about a Broken Battery

2008-12-11 Thread rakshat hooja

If I were in your position now - which I would not be!! I should be
shamed to admit that I have failed customers on more than one
occasion, but never over something as straight-forward as taking a
jiffy bag to the post office - I would now be thinking I need to pay
Fed Ex or someone £80 or more to get a battery to Greece within 24 or
 48 hours.

 Stroller.

Or if you feel shipping batteries to Greece is unreliable/ not possible
offer the customer a 10-15% discount on their next purchase from your store.
Maybe something like that can be worked out even now and everyone can be
happy.

Rakshat

PS - in my market customers are encouraged via government campaigns to
publicly air their grievances if there is no response from the seller so I
dont find it odd if a problem/issue has been made public.

excellent - i'd be interested in one of those if you're building more than

yes that is exact my problem

dial any number - it dials for 3 sec - call with dialed nr comes in and
 leaves a missed call

(All forwards redirects or barring disabled!)

Thanks. I was planning to move to this image from the stock Nokia QT
Extended 4.2.2 (which works fine for me expect bluetooth and multiple sms
problems) but will postphone till Lorn potter releases the netx build.

All that you said makes a lot of sense to me. Also, I haven't missed a

2008-12-21 Thread rakshat hooja
I was in the process of flashing android for the first time. I understand
only GSM works on android (no wifi or gps) and thats ok with me. Just had
two questions

1) Is there a media player inbuilt in the android flash image?
2) Should one flash the Kolou beta image or Sean's image?

Thanks

 AAH!

I don't want to have to have a dongle, probably with a separate contract,
 in
order to use 3G from my phone. That is the worst possible outcome for an
 openmoko data connection.

I want my phone to BE my 3G dongle, so I have a decent smartphone with a
good connection speed, good 3G coverage for calls AND can use the
 connection
from my laptop, preferably via bluetooth.

Screw it, I'll buy a mass produced android next time.

I am talking about GTA 02 and people who already own it and need to use 3G.
GTA 02 does not have 3G built in

sorry if if this was not clear in my mail

Re: How do you like to read a phone number? (India users)

2008-12-30 Thread rakshat hooja
Replies below:

Hello to all Indian Openmoko Users,
I am preparing the Indian dialplan: I have some (for you) stupid question:

 1) All your mobile phone number usually start witt
(092/093/092/097/098/099) so your international phone number start with
 (+9192 / +9193/ etc.) ?

Yes

 2) In the provided pdf file there are only mobile phone number. There
are some city name. What it mean? Is the city where the sim is sold? :)

The State they are sold in - those are state names

 3) In the same pdf I saw:

RIM ‐ RELIANCE INDIA MOBILE (CDMA)
 CELLONE‐ BHARAT SANCHAR NIGAM LIMITED
 TATA INDICOM (CDMA)

They have/ had all india licenses and the three tables on the left give all
their prefixes. They are listed on top of the three tables.
