Re: [CGUYS] best antivirus software
While the interface for AVG is clumsy, I like the fact that it just sits there and does its thing without my having to get involved. It updates itself daily, and I have not had an incidence of a virus or malware in the several years I have been using it. (I have half a dozen machines running Win98SE and two with XP pro, all with AVG.) I should also point out that, with a router/firewall and a couple of free anti spyware applications running, I see almost on indication of problems. On my older, slower, machines, when AVG is doing its scan, it slows down the machine very noticeably, but I suspect that on a faster machine the overhead might not be so noticeable. I try to schedule the scans for when I am not doing anything. I haven't used Norton for 10 years, so I can't comment beyond relating that I have not heard anything good about the product since then. Re: [CGUYS] Apple Will Not Provide Safari 2.0.2, or 2.0.3, or 2.0.4
I have never understood the glowing talk of Apple's superpower browser, Safari. I have always thought it was lame and featureless. (although according to the stats, I guess it is fast.)Indeed Camino has a similar presentation, but is clearly superior to Safari to me. I use it for a specific task. There were new features I was curious about so I downloaded the 3.0.3 (beta?)version and it simply upgraded my 2.? version. I haven't experimented with it yet. I use Firefox and Seamonkey heavily and I don't think anything compares . [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Don't waste your time with Safari, it's a bad browser. I asked why update didn't work and why 2.0.4 was not available; they didn't know. Finally, they said that my framework for Safari is damaged, and I must archive and install the OS all over again, then reinstall Safari 2.0, and everything will be fine. I did not want to do this. You can make your iTunes directory use an external drive. So using an iPod with iTunes should work fine. You can also choose to have iTunes leave your media where it is, so you could keep music on one drive and video on another if you like. Re: [CGUYS] Update OS X 10.3.9 to 10.5?
I think 10.4 was a big improvement over 10.3. From what I've read so far, and I've looked in to it quite a bit, there are no features of 10.5 that would motivate me to get it. There are some neat new features and some worthwhile improvements to the standard Apple programs that would be useful, but I'm happy and comfortable doing things in ways that are becoming old fashioned, like putting things where they belong rather than having to do searches to look for them. I don't go for eye candy like the transparent Dock. That's just silly. I guess I'm getting old, because some of what is new in 10.5 strikes me as excessive visual stimulation for people with a shorter attention span that mine. I do backups by hand also, and I don't like the files to be in a special format or readable by some special program. I did start using Carbon Copy Cloner recently and I like that a lot. Re: [CGUYS] Update OS X 10.3.9 to 10.5?
mike It's available on windows, either as a free powertoy for xp, or you can search for virtual desktop on download.com and come up with dozens. It's amazed me it's taken this long for apple to have this come out, it's been on unix/linux for a decade? It's been on windows for years for that matter too. I've seen some of the implementations on Windows and the implementations were poor. The sessions didn't seem to be real independent. I wish I could remember more details of what was wrong. -- Take care | This clown speaks for himself, his job doesn't Wayne D. | supply this, at least not directly We all live in a yellow subroutine. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] non-iPod MP3 player for Mac
Mason Miller You can make your iTunes directory use an external drive. So using an iPod with iTunes should work fine. You can also choose to have iTunes leave your media where it is, so you could keep music on one drive and video on another if you like. Hmmm, I'm a little confused. I wonder if I can have multiple paths? The last pair of drives I updated videos on, one had a directories called movies and cooking (or was that videos?). The other drive had a pair of directories, organized by date, the second directory (the one most recently created) had the videos (whatever the name is). -- Take care | This clown speaks for himself, his job doesn't Wayne D. | supply this, at least not directly I parked my Hard Disk and now I can't find it. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? From what I've read so far, and I've looked in to it quite a bit, there are no features of 10.5 that would motivate me to get it. I have that on a Sun and sorely miss it on the Windows system at work. I hope this implementation doesn't suck! Everything else looks like a big yawn.
