Re: [CGUYS] Buying tv from Circuit City?

2009-01-28 Thread Eric S. Sande
They get tax breaks from local communities, often paying no local tax, sell
products below cost until the competition goes out of
business, mislabel products as 'made in US' when they're imported [not from
US territories either], make employees work off the clock,
fire employees who want to have a union, and underpay their >employees so
badly that many have to apply for food stamps and state health care
programs.

Wow, how do they do that? All of my employees are forced to
pay union dues, are given no choice about full medical care,
pensions, educational benefits, and have guaranteed no layoff
contracts. I also make them comply with OSHA standards and
cruelly pay for their educations and in fact I force them to sit
through required professional training throughout their careers.

I personally supervise their professional development and on
numerous occasions make them do stuff like take long,
onerous breaks at high class restaurants to eat lunch at my
expense.

Even though they cry for more I never let them work for more
than 37.5 hours a week, except in cases where they bend my
arm, and then I'm more than likely to double their wages (which
are extremely high to begin with).

Occasionally Ben-Hur's galley has to get up to ramming speed,
but that's where the training and loyalty pays off. I'd like to see
how they do that at Wal-Mart.

Every now and then I compel them to accept presents.

Even worse, I make it a point to torture them by accomodating
their personal lives and maintaining a flexible attitude, which I
know is merely an exhibition of weakness.

You know, I really wonder how I seem to stay profitable and
have zero employee turnover. I really ought to get into a line
of work that doesn't really need all these highly skilled career
professionals that I'm competing for.

I guess Wal-Mart can make it work, after a fashion, but my
business model is different. Anyone that deliver the kind of
professional levels of expertise and reliability that I'm looking
for is welcome to come and compete for the jobs that I
probably don't have openings for once every five years or so.

Although I usually replace due to promotions, not hiring.

I am going to be looking for education, experience, security
clearances, long resumes, and suchlike. I haven't got the
budget or the headcount to do interns anymore.

What disturbs me is that there doesn't appear to be an entry
level "middle" sort of job anymore. I started as an operator
at the phone company, but I started with a degree in psychology
and considerable grad school. I knew that was equivalent to
"working in the mailroom" but there was a path to advancement.

I'd say that the economy was pretty bad back then, I did some
crap jobs too and it's easy to say a job sucks until you haven't
got one. That is what Walmart counts on, they'll AWAYS
have a work force no matter what.

I'm in a position now to not operate that way, but I wasn't
always.

I don't care for Wal-Mart, and I won't buy there, but it is what
it is.

Something to realize...with over 90% of the market they aren't trying to
lure any mac people, they are trying to lure those XP business users. Mac
users, like Tom, are trying to keep the impression that 'win 7 looks like
crap', to try and keep some of that momentum going for new users. Trouble
is, Vista hasn't been crap since sp 1 came out, and the win7 beta is coming
out stronger since it's really just vista 1.5.

To compensate for the risk I would want a really big discount. I bet they
won't be offering anything that big.

Every time I checked Circuit City prices against others I found Circuit
City (and Best Buy too) were much too high. Even adding shipping costs
for a large TV I saved $100s by shopping on the internet. So be sure to
do your research.

Often liquidators will haul in all kinds of junk to unload on
bargain-crazed consumers. With TVs it is often hard to tell exactly what
you are buying. Every brand has many models and stores like Circuit City
sometimes get their own model numbers so it is hard to compare.

PBS, no favorite of the neocons, stood to lose $22M with a delay.

and if the poor couldn't get their act together in 12 months, it's

Resodding the mall (wrecked by the wonderful outpouring of support for

not in an emergency economic and job stimulation package. Several
analysts predict the Senate will take a lot of the lights of this

There are two components to making a scanner work.

First there are the drivers that communicate with the software and
the scanner. Then there is the software that will do it.

Unisntall Presto and download for free Irfanview.

You probably shouldn't really need to install a driver at all in
WinXP. Though, there may be some special hardware features (e.g. an
instant scan button) that would require proprietary software.

So, just uninstall Presto and use something else. Or leave it
installed and use something else. Maybe I'm just not understanding the
dilemma.

>Yeah, but it's a document; PDF was made for documents. We don't know if it
>needs to be edited or not.

That's right, but from that point you veer into wrongness.

A scanned image is a bunch of pixels, a raster image. The basic file
format for this is TIFF. You can compress the TIFF with something like
lossless LZW, or for extreme compression use a lossy format, usually JPEG.

PDF is a vector format derived from PostScript. If you had the original
document file, not a scan, then saving it into PDF would be a good idea.
The PDF would contain the font information, the text (coded as ASCII or
UTF), and geometry infomation about how the text is positioned on the
page.

While a PDF can contain another file format, like TIFF or JPEG, you are
not accomplishing anything useful by doing that. You are just wrapping
one file format around a different file format. Double wrapping may be
good for the freezer, but for digital data it accomplishes nothing useful.

[CGUYS] scanner

2009-01-28 Thread rleesimon
I have a swell little scanner ...travelscan 464 ...it comes, of course, with
a cd...well, it includes presto image manager which is slow/cumbersome; on
my laptop the scanner shows up with microsoft image manager software and
works like a champ (winxpprosp3) ...I have no idea how it got that way.
After crash, my desktop (winxphomesp3) is redone fresh (a parallel xp
install got me everything back ...cool). I don't want Presto and I wonder
how to get it to work like on my laptop? Do I need to just install the
driver without Presto? Or what? Before, I had to run a black and white
sheet through the scanner with the presto thing to get it initialized. I
don't think my laptop ever required that and it works fine & scans fine.
How should I approach this? ...TIA!!

The Senate voted on Monday to delay next month's transition to
digital television until June 12 because some viewers would not be
ready for the switch.

The voice vote followed a call by President Obama's administration
to postpone the Feb. 17 date for major TV stations to stop sending
traditional analog signals. Similar legislation awaits action in the
House on Tuesday.

Re: [CGUYS] A Mac user's take on the Windows 7 user interface

2009-01-28 Thread Chris Dunford
> And factual errors about the OS?

It's certainly true that this review is more accurate than the other one,
but there actually is one error, I think. He implies that the taskbar app
thumbnails are new with Win7. They're improved, but not new--Vista had them,
too.

I'd also argue about "The Mac OS rarely crashes, and it recovers much better
when apps freeze. You can even restart the Finder without taking down the
OS." My experience is that Vista also rarely crashes, and that it almost
always recovers from app crashes. It "even" recovers from Explorer crashes,
too.

But these are nits. It's a well-written review.

Marcio,

You were automatically deleted from the list because your ISP has been
rejecting emails sent by the ListServer. They have been doing this every
day since Jan 23. The message is "Relay access denied."

Others on the list may wish to expand on this.

My recommendation stands that you should not use a badly managed ISP for
email. Any ISP that rejects email from AOL is certainly clueless.

I have put you back on the list, but if your ISP does not cooperate you
will not be getting all the list mail and will eventually get
automatically deleted again.

The size the recipient will see depends on the screen resolution of the
recipient's computer, so one has to know that to get the size right.
Generally, the picture will display natively on the recipient's computer in the
recipient's e-mail client. The recipient should right-click on the picture
received, and then select "save image as . . " or similar option, to save the
image to a file. Then the recipient should open the file in whatever
application he/she uses to view/edit pictures -- which generally can resize the
loaded image for display purposes.

That being said, let's assume that a resolution of 400 x 300 pixels (adjust for
aspect ratio) will do pretty well on most computers. It needs to be small
enough to display in the message window of the mail client; don't use the full
screen resolution of the recipient.
