Would one of those regular sized rollup USB keyboards work with an Eeepc? - Original Message - From: Constance Warner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Monday, July 21, 2008 2:58 PM Subject: Re: [CGUYS] The blessed ones [and more Eeepc info] Here's a link to the specs of the Eeepc: http://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/en/index.htm I got an Eeepc so I could carry it around in my knapsack, write on it when I'm on the subway or bus, and then download what I'd written when I got home. Data transfer is simple: I use a flash drive. This is a vast improvement over the devices I'd used before for mobile writing (which, to download text to my main machine, required cables, IR units, proprietary software that had lots of kinks in it, etc.) Battery life isn't great--and it takes a long time to recharge--but the Eeepc will handle my commute just fine. Supposedly, another, larger-capacity battery may be available soon. Or may be already. I'd like to buy one, when it's available. The Eeepc weighs about 2 pounds and is very compact. The case looks sturdy; the hinge (when you open the computer) also looks sturdy. Text is very readable on the small screen; you can see at least a paragraph, which means you can edit as well as write on the Eeepc. The computer is solid state, so you don't have to worry about using it on a Metro bus on a typical local road that has needed resurfacing since about 1999. The computer gets a bit warm when in use, so if you're using it on your lap, you won't want to rest it on bare skin. (You probably wouldn't anyway, but I thought I'd just mention it, because the Asus website shows a woman using her Eeepc while apparently taking a break from playing beach volleyball or being photographed for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.) That having been said, I'm having trouble getting used to the small keyboard. Normally, when I'm trying to write, I don't even think about what my fingers are doing--I just write. The keys of the Eeepc keyboard are just small enough that I DO have to think about where I put my fingers, and how hard I touch the keys. So my text, instead of looking like this, tnds too looklike THS, withalot of mistakeshtat I wdn't otherwise mk. (But I'm still trying!) I got a reasonably good deal on my Eeepc at Microcenter--comparable to what you get in the inexpensive mail-order places. Supposedly, the Eeepc is the first of a whole herd of microcomputers from various manufacturers. I'd like to hear from other ComputerGuys list members when they hear about, and use, these new machines. --Constance Warner Subject: Re: [CGUYS] The blessed ones I like it, it does have a small screen and keyboard. I don't know what kind of GPS receiver you have, but I have one of those keychain sorts which Bluetooths to my Treo that I picked up somewhere on the web for $59 and use it with Telenav and it got me from to the wilds of Worcester, Mass and back home again. And my husband doesn't argue with her the way he does me. If your Bluetooth isn't working on the Palm, try a soft reset before you give up. Hi All! It's been a very frustrating spring. So far I've replaced my TX because the touch screen stopped reacting to touch. The new TX is great, but the GPS unit just - yesterday! - decided that it can't find any satelites. We've tried resetting everything. The Blue Tooth signal seems to be working on the GPS, but it's not being picked up by the Palm TX. I'm assuming that all satelites are in their correct places and the GPS unit I have has been dropped too many times and has stopped working. Since TomTom hasn't upgraded their maps to work with the TX since 2005, I'm ready to throw in the towel and replace everything. So my question is: Any recommendations for a GPS (TomTom or Garmin) to replace my existing system? I gather that the new systems do not need to work with the Palm. Rather they come complete and ready to use. Of course, I'd like something by next week-end as we're driving from Baltimore to Cranberry, NJ on Saturday, but I guess we can use google or go back to a paper map if we have to. Re: [CGUYS] OT: GPS System: Any recommendations?
Or If you have something like Telenav, it downloads real-time maps by cellular datalink, and you have the most current info about construction and roadwork, closed streets, etc., because it is real-time live download. That's what I like about having it on my phone. And I understand that some of the subscription mapping devices also download in that manner. - Original Message - From: Eric S. Sande [EMAIL PROTECTED] No, not a religion and politics question. A mapping GPS comes with a base map out of the box. Usually pretty basic (yeah). You can buy maps to download to the device depending on what coverage you want. These can have a very high level of detail, depending. You can get, for example, USA maps or European maps, etc. These can be very helpful (or not, as the case may be). It depends on how frequently they are revised. A non-mapping GPS will normally give you a base map that is very simplified. You can set waypoints and you get position information but they do not have routing capability. A mapping GPS will have routing capability. The device will attempt to figure out, based on its map database, where you should go to get to a waypoint. Sometimes this works well. Sometimes it doesn't. Topo and basic road maps are somewhat dependable. Elaborate maps sometimes aren't. What is generally said in bicycle touring circles is that GPS is a nice thing to have but maps and compasses don't need batteries. I wouldn't bet my life on a GPS device. It's nice to have in certain circumstances. A friend of mine was lost in the Atacama desert on a motorcycle trip to South America. He had a (non-mapping) GPS. He said, and I quote, I was lost, but I knew exactly where I was, I just didn't have a map. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] OT: GPS System: Any recommendations?
Okay, this is not real-time mapping, if you have to load the maps into it. The Telenav system is tied into a cellphone (my Treo) and as you put in an address, it calls it in and downloads a fresh routing and map, including routing around construction sites and such, because the info is updated every day. It's a $10 monthly fee for the mapping, instead of buying a whole bunch at once. You can set it for shortest, fastest, or avoiding highways. The voice is female and unchangeable. We call her Genevieve. I also have Google maps on my Treo, which is great if you know where you are to begin with. It also is real-time, and downloads fresh map info as you ask for it. - Original Message - From: Rev. Help this non tech speak person understand. All I know is that I put in the place I want to go, and it gives directions. If I stray from the directions it reroutes itself and gives me new directions. (Frequent destinations can be saved in the database) Recently I took a few trips and used it extensively. I preprogrammed a few locations into it, and used it to know where I was plus where I wanted to go. The directions did not fail me once. It even showed me routes I did not know about. I live in Southern Alabama, the home of backwoods and rural roads, and it does very well in routing on these roads. It does not always show roads that I see, but it has been very good over all. Just recently I saw one of the mapping companies in town with their Van (Toyota) with Radar receiver on top and four cameras mounted at each corner of the roof taking mapping data. Understand that these maps also tend to be a couple of years old at best. (No matter who you go to!) So today when I was on my way back home, it showed me off the road when I was on a new strip of highway. You can buy other maps for this and download them, not that expensive at all. (Plus if you must have celebrity voices give you directions you can do this also.) Stewart At 08:09 PM 4/13/2008, you wrote: Do Tom-Toms have real-time mapping? Rev. Stewart A. Re: [CGUYS] Why not the US?
I like your in-depth analysis: The healthcare guys. Do they carry around a big bag of healthcare to dole out skimpily to the poor and needy? Lemme tell you a REAL healthcare story. I have whatcha call one of those orphan diseases. It's incurable, it's progressive, but it's treatable, to slow down my imminent demise. My pharmacy bill ran over $300k last year, because most of the drugs I take are only taken by the few of us who have this disease (you DO remember the economy of scale, don't you?). It will likely cost that much annually for the rest of my life. If I had no insurance, the companies would give it to me. If I had lousy insurance, there are foundations which will help with the costs. However, in the UK, that paragon of the National Health Service, they've just decided not to carry five of the six medications for my disease. If that one that's left doesn't treat you, then you're sunk. Canada? One of my pals died there last year because the health board fiddled around too long to get her proper treatment. Australia? One of my pals died there because not only would the government not buy the drug from overseas because of the cost, they wouldn't let him buy any with his own money and import it. Yeah, it's not great here, but like Churchill said, it's better than the alternatives. Re: [CGUYS] battery is weak, switch to ac power
Are you managing your battery backup through your computer, or are you just plugged into it without management? Also, you might check your power options under Display Properties to see if your desktop thinks it's a laptop for some reason. Finally, you might have a utility that warns you about the watch battery on the motherboard? I've never seen one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. - Original Message - From: Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2008 11:55 AM Subject: [CGUYS] battery is weak, switch to ac power My desktop computer recently began displaying a message that my battery power is weak and advises to switch to AC power. See report: http://www.iolo.com/sm/freeapp/brands/zonealarm2/summary.aspx?session=14afed14-4f10-45ff-b70c-28f76fa184b5 They then advertise that all this can be fixed if I just buy Zone Alarm Internet Suite and System Mechanic, both for $60. Also the idea they have been trained to be afraid because they don't use a mac is beyond ridiculous, they might be bristling at this notion. I have not suggested to my fellow workers that they may find the Mac difficult. They do have difficult times with their current Windows machines for whatever reasons, and I do think that those experiences are responsible for a bit of computer oriented paranoia, if I may put it that way. I have told them that they will actually find the Mac quite easy to use once they get a little acclimated to it, and while I am sure that they believe me, they just remain hesitant. Perhaps I will give them a little demo of the very simple faxing routines built into the Mac and see if that helps to prod them along, and nicely as you put it. Re: [CGUYS] Looking for a cellphone--encore
I can only answer question 2, because I have Sprint and I live in Old Town and it works just fine... But I have a Treo 600 and I love it. It has all my contacts, my e-mail, my notes to myself. It will act as a cellular modem for my laptop if I need connectivity in my car (don't ask), and it has MP3s, Audible.com books and a camera. I can go to mapquest and e-mail myself directions to where I need to go. And it has solitaire so I can amuse myself in long boring meetings. If it had wheels and an engine, I'd need nothing else. - Original Message - From: Constance Warner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Monday, June 18, 2007 2:47 PM Subject: [CGUYS] Looking for a cellphone--encore As long as the topic of cellphones has been brought up, here are two related questions: Problem: For some reason, my Sprint phone won't work where I work anymore. It does work elsewhere, but tech support can't tell me why it doesn't work next to Old Town Alexandria (beyond a possible lightning strike on a tower, which will take an indefinite time to fix). Well, c'est la guerre. I had been thinking of switching services anyway. So here's question #1: does anyone know of a really good deal in the national capitol area for basic phone service (either buying phone service alone, or bundled with other services such as DSL)? We were thinking of Verizon, because of their wide coverage area-does anyone have experience with Verizon cellphone service? Question #2: in your experience, do you find it useful to have a phone that does things other than phone calls? The extra bells and whistles-e.g. interfacing with your computer-do you actually find them useful or essential, or are they just nice to have, but not critical? (I'm trying to decide whether to go for the basics, or pay more for more features. The only features I HAVE to have is the same phone number I have now, and voicemail. Obviously there are a lot of ways a phone can be more than a phone-and interact with other electronics-are they worth the extra money? Re: [CGUYS] Border for Certificate of Appreciation in MS Word
You can download templates for certificates from the MS Office website. - Original Message - From: Fred Holmes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Running MS Word 2000. Where can I find, how do I import into a document a fancy page border suitable for a certificate of appreciation? The borders offered in the Borders and Shading dialog for the page border are simply straight and dotted straight lines and a few minor variations. Thanks, Fred Holmes * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
