Precisely. That is why I just had to mention the wide gulf between
the headline and the actual facts as revealed in the body of the
article. I see many similar distortions in that paper on a regular
basis. This is one of the means by which they "warp" the perceptions
of their readers.

This is an excellent point. Unfortunately, building credibility isn't at
the top of all that many organization's list.

Ben Stein is another person I find highly credible, though I often disagree
with him. At least he makes me think that maybe I am missing some key
points.

I could go on and on. I may not agree with many people ideologically, but I
definitely like to read the credible people on all sides.

Same goes for computer writing - some people/magazines/organizations lose
credibility by acting as shills, etc.

The fact that Fox channels GOP talking points like
Madame effing Blavatsky is disheartening. I would
find that obnoxious in a "liberal" or "mainstream"
paper.

Any ideological tendency might be worth
hearing if the source shows some independent
thought and willingness to look at evidence. What's
the point however if they replace their mission of
gathering and analyzing evidence with the job
of helping to rule the country.

I don't read the Times
so I can't comment but its disrepute seems to
reach beyond the ideological bias (I don't think much
of Christian Science - apologies in advance - but
people generally don't doubt CSM's credibiility, and you
can make the same argument about WSJ or the Economist
on political lines).

That may well be true, but do you know anyone that feels they can trust the
reporting of Washington Times, or who believes that Fox News is "fair and
balanced"?

The problems are not that every reporter is biased, in fact there are very
good news reporters in both organizations. The problems are in how they are
managed.

Re: [CGUYS] More on bees and cellphones

2007-04-28 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

A classic mistake is made here.

Viewership does not equal believe/and or trust. Viewership is simply
that viewership. I watch CBS news (Katie Couirc) Simply because it
is the main local channel we get local news on. If it were an
ABC/NBC station I would watch it more for news. I not believe and/or
trust Katie anymore than I do Brain Williams or the other guy.

I watch both Fox News and listen to NPR. Do I believe one more than
the other. NO! I base the things I trust in what I can find out
personally and can ascertain for myself.

Now that puts me firmly somewhere in the middle. Just because the
news says it or someone reports does not make it factual to
me. Remember what I said about reporting earlier?

Remember all of these institutions are all out there to make or raise
money to broadcast. Their main goal is to be profitable. (Exemption
here is granted to NPR whose sole purpose seems to be to raise money!)

Any institution whose goal is to be profitable has an ulterior
motive. Take it from a guy who has worked in the non profit sector
for a very long time. I have to remind my folks of this axiom all
the time, as we do not exist to meet the bottom line, ours is a
different goal, so therefore our methods will be different!

Not crowing just stating a known fact.

Stewart

Meeting." That headline seem to imply that Syria has been refusing to
talk, but is finally relenting and agreeing to some request from
Secretary of State Rice for dialog. Actually it is us who is doing the
refusing, and continuing to so so. Reading the article reveals that
Rice has made no offer of dialogue whatsoever, and the Syrian official
was merely saying, in response to a question, that Syria remains ready
to talk at any time.

I agree with you very much on this. Having just finished seeing a
Bill Moyers special on how the press was either bamboozled or in bed
with our current administration in the run up to the Iraq war, who can
possibly doubt how poor our journalistic standards are today.

The classic example of this was an 11 o'clock news teaser I saw on one of the
Baltimore TV
stations a few years ago: "Is there snow in our future? Details at 11." The
answer turned
out to be "no".

(I also love that they call these blatant promos "news updates".)

Re: [CGUYS] More on bees and cellphones

2007-04-25 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
The press has a real problem distinguishing pseudo science from real
science and rarely has anyone trained in science reporting on science.

The same can be said of computer reporting (Except in specialized
magazines) Religion and a host of other specialties.

What most reporting does is look for the hook or the grab line that
will grab every ones attention and use it as a come on, while the
full story might say something opposite.

The majors (print and broadcast) tend to do a little better job of
it, but often times present a one sided view.

I prefer when they talk about medical science (religion you name the
speciality) to bring in a practicing doctor (same for other
specialities) to discuss the current findings. Usually they will do
a well balanced report of what seems to be a headline but is in
reality just normal news.

Just as well-I can imagine the HUGE protests if businesses (and

enough.
