 pygnome-1.4.4-1mdk (due to unsatisfied pygtk == 0.6.9)

non user-friendly gui has been fixed in cvs

Also, the state of this section is not saved between uses. There's
a button to configure lilo/grub, but nothing in there to control

Thanks, I asked wrong, I wanted if possible the kernelname (uname -r)
in the
rpm-filename and if possible due some magig in the spec :)

 Maybe something like:

 %define kernver `uname-r`
 %define name pkgename-%kernver
 Name: %name

The way this is usually done (IIRC) is by:

%package -n %kernver

Then, the souce rpm will not have the kernel version in it, only the
binaries.

Guiseppe has an example here:

http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~ghibo/ltmodem-8.22a5-3mdk.src.rpm

You will notice there is some script in there (by Chmouel, originally
used in the NVidia RPMs I think) which gets the kernel version from the
installed headers (my method was to rpm -q --qf {%VERSION}
kernel-source, but it does not handle kernel flavours).

The other issue is that AFAIK, kernel modules are not desired outside
the kernel, even in contrib, otherwise I would put my thinkpad drivers in:
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/cooker/thinkpad-4.1-1mdk.src.rpm

(but they do not compile at the moment :-()

I submitted a bug earlier and had no way of checking (so I thought at the
time) if it had already been submitted. I lost all window borders, couldn't
minimize, maximise, resize, close or enter text. Once I figured out how to
check for bug submissions I found this and thought it may have something to
do with my problem. It did. I must have had galaxy selected, even thought I
didn't do it myself. When it went missing KDE did not select another
automagically and left me with an unuseable computer. So when I selected
another one, everything came back. Now to check out a couple other things
I'm worried about. :^)

I have seen this problem for kdbase releases up than 3.1.50mdk. Even in
3.1.56 I have the removable-media useless icon problem. That was I did:
I installed the kde 3.1 rpms from textar and everything is runing fine.

I can't understand why the removable-media icon problem is still
appearing if you use the cooker rpms after lots of complains about it
and in addition now the problem you mentioned.

The problem I haven't been able to solve is that of the kdm reboot
option, just a white windows and you only can be back. I haven't found
any actual solution in the mandrake lists and even with textar rpms the
problem is there.

No, on here machine, zeroconf should work (I am sure I wrote that
somewhere in this mail) if she has a network card in it. If there is
*no* network interface anywhere on the machine, then it *may* be
necessary to add an entry to /etc/hosts.

I was *only* answering James's problem with a network with hundreds on
unix servers. And in that case, someone is not doing their job right if
DNS does not work right (there will be many other problems too).

What, that you know it is broken, but don't care to help fix it the
*right* way?

I thought people on this list try and help fix things so they work
better for everyone, rather than just telling each other what hacks they
had to do to get it working (which is what I expect on the newbie list).

xine-ui-0.9.18, only with a frontend based on libxine0 like kdemultimedia or sinek.

[Cooker] Open Office doesn't like me anymore

2003-02-27 Thread Robert Fox
I have since updated my machine to recent Cooker.

Now Open Office complains (see attachment)

I deleted the .openoffice/ directory without success.

I started the program from the CLI (oowriter) to see if there was any
other error messages - but it simply says aborted

What's the scoop?

Thx,

description:
Firstly, I am running kernel 2.4.19-24mdk (not 2.4.19-19mdk). I have all updates
applied. I also
have supermount and scsi-emulation enabled.

I have two CD drives (hdc and hdd). The ejection problem is with /dev/cdrom1
(/dev/hdd).
Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Put a CD in the drive and close the tray by pressing the CD eject button (the
hardware
button present on the drive).
2. Press the eject button and the CD is ejected normally
3. Close the CD tray again.
4. Run a command to read /dev/cdrom1 as:
cat /dev/cdrom1
5. a) Now press the CD eject button. Nothing happens.
b) If I use eject /dev/cdrom1, the CD is ejected fine.
6. a) If I skip step 5b and run ls /mnt/cdrom2 (/dev/cdrom1 is mounted on
/mnt/cdrom2), then
the CD files are listed just fine.
   b) After step 6a, if I press the CD eject button, it ejects normally.

This strange behavior is 100% reproducible. It seems that every time the cat command
is
used, it prevents a manual hardware ejection of the CD. After cat, using another read
command (like ls) that reads from the device, sets things right.

Further investigation revealed that if I manually umount /mnt/cdrom2 then this problem
disappears. If I manually re-mount /mnt/cdrom2, the problem reappears. Obviously,
supermount is not handling it correctly since it is related to mounting.

No error messages in dmesg or /var/log/* can be found that explains this odd behavior.

version fixes bugs very important for your personal usage?

Most of the fixes seem to be for bugs that are not encountered that
often (judging from lack of repeating reports on the main discussion
and the bug mailing lists). But there is one major change that may be
of interest:

 * `NULL' is now sorted *LAST* if you use `ORDER BY ... DESC' (as it
was before before MySQL 4.0.2). This is change was required to
follow ANSI SQL 99. (The original change was because we thought
that ANSI SQL 99 required NULL to be always sorted at the same
   position, but this was wrong).

That is, only with 4.0.11 MySQL adheres to the SQL standard the same
as 3.23 in this regard. On the other hand, the whole MySQL beta cycle
passed until someone bothered to complain, so maybe that is not used
as much either.

For me, 4.0.10 works fine. On the other hand, with 4.0.6 the 4.0 cycle
has gone gamma status and in bug-squashing mode. So maybe 4.0.11
should be applied simply because it has to be considered mainly a
bug-fix release?

Benjamin.

[Cooker] acpi on dell inspiron 8100

2003-02-27 Thread Alexander Volovics
I installed mandrake 9.1 rc1 on a dell inspiron i8100 laptop
using acpi.

All entries seem to be available in /proc/acpi but a lot of things
are not working because, judging from /boot/config-2.4.21pre4-10mdk
support for 'battery', 'fan', 'processor', 'thermal' is not compiled into
the kernel.

Is this because they still give problems on some/many laptops.
Is it worth the trouble recompiling the kernel to try it out.
Has somebody already done this for an inspiron 8100. Does it work?

When mandrake 9.1 gold come out will the support for these items
be compiled into the kernel? Or is support for acpi still meant to
be experimental?

By the way kernel-sources needs ncurses-devel. I can't find this
package anywhere.

Er, so what if they work in the nightly builds? You don't think
Mandrake's Mozilla gets rebuilt from the trunk every night, do you? If
it only started working on yesterday's nightly build, it's hardly going

Fixed. It was because of the galaxy them being taken out of kdebase and a new

select another them when you're taking one out. huh?

Immediately after doing a cooker update this afternoon I logged back into
KDE only to find I have but ONE desktop. Changing it to default still only
gives ONE desktop. Windows are now in the bottom right two thirds of the
screen and have no border. They overwrite each other, are immovable and not
resizable. Click on new mail in Kmail and can't enter ANY text. Insertion
point doesn't even show up. Tried another update but it says everything is
installed. I hope we are not all in this position as not everyone would
have a second computer (still runnin 9.0) to be able to report this.
Please hurry and fix this.

I am using Spanish configuration and also the same problem, I can't write
characters with accents in the mozilla releases coming with rc1.

Also in Galeon I have observed that I can write accents, but then they are not
well recognized

My locale is set to en_US. I have a US keyboard, but I sometimes write

I can type accented vowels in all applications (OpenOffice, gedit, xterm,
etc...) but I cannot in Mozilla. Since I upgraded to Mozilla 1.3alpha (and
now with beta), accented vowels cannot be typed in HTML forms. I can copy text
with accents into a form, and it gets copied correctly, with the accents. But I
when I type accented vowels into an HTML form in Mozilla, only the vowels shows
up, not the accent.

I have set up Mozilla to use different fonts in the HTML forms, and still,
accents do not show up with neither of them.

The same behaviour can be seen in the current Galeon (galeon-1.3.2-1mdk),
but all other applications do not have this problem (Konqueror, OpenOffice,
gedit, xterm, etc: They all accept typed accented characters).

The current icons and labels in mdkkdm are not very intuitive, I suggest to
change them as follows:

- Reboot/Halt icons: at the moment they are in the same position as the
Back/Login icons, which could be confusing for the user (suppose you click on
reboot because your misled by its position and think its the back button). They
should be marked both by specific icons and a different positions (perhaps a
combo box with a System label?);

- if you click on either Reboot/Halt the back icon is on the right, while if you
click on an user icon it's on the left: standardize on the left position;

- in theSession type combo box more meaningful labels should be used:

* default - [Default] or [First Time Wizard] if fw hasn't been
  run by the user yet;

* failsafe - [Failsafe] or [something more intuitive]

* use the space below the combo box to supply more info, e.g This is the first
time that you log in your system, so the FTW will be launched, This will
launch the GNOME desktop environment, etc.

Maybe in this case (where there is only a loopback device), the machine

It would be great if gpg-agent could be automatically started at X start when people
use kmail AEGYTEN crypto plugins.

The attached patch and script I currently use could make it.

The patch ensure that if the script is installed it is run in the current shell
context
(this is very important to get the GPG_AGENT_INFO env variable available on the
desktop)

The script kills all previous gpg-agent process for the user login in and starts a new
one, exporting the correct env variable.

I tried diferent configurations: resolutions, monitors other SiS drivers, but
nothing seems to work...What can I do?

If you haven't seen the problem reported otherwise, perhaps you are the only one
with the problem, therefore it is not a bug, but a hardware or user issue. Did you
try
to verify on other hardware? More info on your hardware setup would be more
helpful too so that someone else could try to recreate it..

Getting people to respond to bug reports requires good bug reports to be filed.

[Cooker] Status of multimedia kernel?

2003-02-27 Thread Buchan Milne
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I was just reading LWN, where they were discussing how slow progress has
been with demudi and agnula (really bad names ...).

http://lwn.net/Articles/23857/

I was wanting to answer that most of the software is already in Mandrake
contribs in preparation for 9.1, but it seems we do not have the low
latency/multimedia kernel in contrib yet.

Chmouel seemed to imply that it should be able to go in as long as the
names do not conflict. Danny uploaded a new one, which was rejected (IIRC).

Is it going to be possible to get it in for 9.1 contrib?

Regards,
Buchan

It sounds perfectly valid to me. I'd guess the lack of response is
because this type of PCMCIA card isn't very common, and there aren't
*that* many of us running Cooker on laptops. I can't see that there's
any user error here - he seems to be doing everything right, then the
system looks for memory_cs, which doesn't exist in the Cooker kernel (I
can confirm that much).

Did you specify turning on ACPI as part of the bootloader configuration

I installed mandrake 9.1 rc1 on a dell inspiron i8100 laptop using acpi.

All entries seem to be available in /proc/acpi but a lot of things are not
working because, judging from /boot/config-2.4.21pre4-10mdk
support for 'battery', 'fan', 'processor', 'thermal' is not compiled into
the kernel.

Is this because they still give problems on some/many laptops. Is it worth
the trouble recompiling the kernel to try it out. Has somebody already done
this for an inspiron 8100. Does it work?

When mandrake 9.1 gold come out will the support for these items be compiled
into the kernel? Or is support for acpi still meant to be experimental?

By the way kernel-sources needs ncurses-devel. I can't find this package
anywhere.

[Cooker] gnome 2.2 problem when using autologin, and when not using it ;)

2003-02-27 Thread Olivier Blin
Hi

When I use autologin to log in Gnome 2.2, my menu items are in English (I want them in
French), and my .bash_profile isn't loaded.
When I log out and then log in using gdm, my menus items are now in French, but
buttons in gtk1 apps are much bigger as normal (for example in Sylpheed).
Is there any way to correct this ? Do you need more details ?

Thanks for your help.

The next time you start Windows, it will automatically verify the contents

RE: [Cooker] ACPI Commands

2003-02-27 Thread MEISCH,CORY (HP-Vancouver,ex1)
Cool. It almost works. I added resume=/dev/hda7 to the append statement in
lilo. Upon reboot got message at startup resume machine: this is normal
swap space. After completing the reboot, ran pmsuspend again. It dropped
out of Gnome and wrote to disk and shut off the machine. After powering the
laptop back on, it looked like it was writing back into RAM but then I lost
X and could not get to a prompt. I just have a bunch of lines at the top of
the screen. Going to remove the resume portion and say it almost works...

[Cooker] Network menus

2003-02-27 Thread Vincent Meyer, MD
Hi,

I've brought this up before, and as we get closer to releasing 9.1, maybe
someone can fix this. Komba2 and the Gnome Samba Browser are in the menus
under Networking--Remote Access, but LinNeighborhood which does the same
thing is in Networking--Other. Shouldn't they all be in the same place?
They do the same thing pretty much.

Thanks,

If you are running tmdns you should not need bind.

Caching dns on a small network? Or does tmdns cache request from real
DNS servers? Would they be able to run simultaneously?

[Cooker] Komba2 sorting weirdness

2003-02-27 Thread Vincent Meyer, MD
Hi,

Komba2 is cool! I noticed an interesting problem/bug/feature - when you
browse the network, you can click on a heading to make it sort ( LIKE this
feature!) Problem is, when you click on IP address to sort by IP, is sorts
in IP alphabetical order ie:

192.168.1.1
192.168.1.11
192.168.1.12
192.168.1.2
192.168.1.20

etc. instead of numerical order.

Should I report this to the KDE developers?

Ahhh. Now that I have rebooted, something *is* happening!

And I did not ignore it. I added the line to lilo.conf and ran lilo. It
said nothing about having to reboot to be able to use it. Ie, Chmouel,
if users are expected to run this, please add a and reboot for the
changes to take effect (in true MS-style) to the message.

Now *that* *is* pretty neat. 1:30 from power-on until I had unlocked my
screensaver (0:26 from power-on until the resume prog started up).

You also may need to remove the default acpi=off from the lilo append

Re: [Cooker] where to ask mdk-rpm-newbie questions ?

2003-02-27 Thread Steffen Barszus

The way this is usually done (IIRC) is by:

 %package -n %kernver

Then, the souce rpm will not have the kernel version in it, only the

 Guiseppe has an example here:

 http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~ghibo/ltmodem-8.22a5-3mdk.src.rpm

Ah thanks, I thought about that package, but did not fount it.

You will notice there is some script in there (by Chmouel, originally
used in the NVidia RPMs I think) which gets the kernel version from the
 installed headers (my method was to rpm -q --qf {%VERSION}
kernel-source, but it does not handle kernel flavours).

I have currently %define kernver %(eval uname -r) and this works, but have
had other problems, I guess what you said would fix it. The ltmodem-package
should be very much the same, so I can look at them.

The other issue is that AFAIK, kernel modules are not desired outside
the kernel, even in contrib, otherwise I would put my thinkpad drivers in:
 http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/cooker/thinkpad-4.1-1mdk.src.rpm

The package I try are proprietary drivers (like nvidia = LGPL-Wrapper and
proprietary object code to link it. (AVM ISDN card drivers) The resulting
binary-code would be anyway on club( if there is an interest) or a site I
have to create. (AVM allowed to me to build them and give them away for
download them, as long as I (or mandrake) making support for it (aka the
people don't complain them if my rpm is not working). So nothing for contrib.

Another modul I think of is lzs_comp a compression module for isdn, and as I
read because of the compression this module could have problems to with
licensing(because of the compression algo) to go in main or contrib.

But this may take time anyway as it is my first try ;)

(but they do not compile at the moment :-()

I could only try to compile them against my current kernel (9.0 standard =
2.4.19-16mdk)

What currently bothers me too are the isdn4k-utils, they have some problems
and I don't think there would be an update (3.1pre1 = 3.2pre3) unless I
don't complain massiv ;) I have made some suggestions about them, but I'm not
able to package such a big thing, at least not before release.
