Currently still a no-go. Two problems need to be solved before this bug:

1. Don't include any locale name with charset in /etc/menu-methods/lang.h.

2. upstream bug in gnome-panel.

I've fixed GNOME menu method to generate correct .desktop file (ie with
Encoding=UTF-8 entry). See gnome-panel 2.3.4.1-3mdk

I'll leave this bug opened until I've check if we are :
-generating files correctly (there is a crash in gedit which prevent me to open
those files atm)
-displaying entries correctly.

Could you provide me the three strings (the correct one, and the two wrong ones)
in UTF-8 (an utf8 text file as attach would be ok), it will help me to find the
entries in the po files.
Or at lest provide the pinyin pronounciation so I can type then (I could try to
type them just out of the images, by looking in various dictionnaries, but it
would take me a lot of time)

Thanks

Fred, I believe this comes from errorneous handling of strings in gnome menu
method, not a bug in translation. I have checked, translation is correct.

attachment ID 500 and 501 are both observed in trad. Chinese, not simp. Chinese.
The string concerned is U+7db2U+8def, and it's byte sequence in UTF-8 is e7
b6 b2 e8 b7 af. However, this byte sequence is also valid Big5 byte sequence,
which refers to the 3 chinese characters observed in attached jpeg (id=500).

Situation is the same in final attachment (id=502). The string is
U+8bbeU+7f6e, which is e8 ae be e7 bd ae in UTF-8. This sequence is valid
Chinese characters in GB2312 encoding, i.e. the 3 characters observed in the jpeg.

Mmh, very interesting indeed.

Currently (due to historical reasons) the translations are taken in the locale
default encoding, then converted to utf-8 for KDE and Gnome, in order to avoid
converting what is already in utf-8, the strigns are checked to see if they are
valid utf-8, if yes, they are not converted.

THis obvioulsy doesn't work for strings that are both utf-8 and local encoding
valid byte sequences.

In order to solve another bug, in menudrake (bug #2270), the way it is handled
will be changed, translations will be retrieved in utf-8 always, and only
converted to locale encoding when needed (not for KDE, Gnome nor ROX; on,ly for
WM, icewm, etc), and as the source encoding is always known to be utf-8, no
conversion surprises will happen.
It should solve this bug too.

Does this explain why we can see this few garbages caracters in GNOME and they
are not garbages in KDE ?

OK, pablo, I found the root cause of it; it's not an error in menu method (I was
saying this too prematurely without investigation), but mainly from
gnome-panel's ignorance on Encoding= key of desktop file, and it's
intelligent handling of locale encoding. I'll use zh_TW in explanation, zh_CN
case is identical.

When gnome-panel reads .desktop file, it tries to determine the best matching
locale, and thinks that [EMAIL PROTECTED] form has priority over ll_CC form. When it
reads Name[zh_TW]=..., it will automatically think that zh_TW.Big5 is a better
match (either from an internal list in init_encodings() of
gnome-panel/quick-desktop-reader.c, or from $LANGUAGE).

Originally, Name[zh_TW.Big5]= is not available in GNOME desktop files (stock
ones), but in mdk menu files, it is available (why is it so?), so gnome-panel
happily use that instead.

Afterwards, it ignores the Encoding= field in desktop file, and
unconditionally convert the name and comment from local encoding (Big5) to UTF-8
encoding. As the strings in .desktop file are already in UTF-8, the conversion
should fail, and the vanilla UTF-8 strings are used instead as fallback.
However, in some particular cases (in this bug report), the conversion
succeeded(!), and the new garbage string is used.

To fix this mess, going after either gnome-panel (patch attached) or menu
(eliminate zh_TW.* and zh_CN.* entries) would do, but I'd suggest fixing both.
Pablo, is there any reason to generate these entries in menu? Generating zh_TW,
zh_TW.Big5 and zh_TW.big5 entries in menu sounds quite silly to me, as one
language should use the same description regardless of the encoding. But I'm not
completely clear about how Debian menu works, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Finally, it would also help if mdk generated desktop files have Encoding=UTF-8
in it.
