Not really, no. CSS cannot be used to reduce *content*, only to style it. Your
issue is one of markup - how best to represent thousands of items in a form -
and, thus, isn't really suitable for this list, IMO.

A couple of bits of good news. (1) it is not as hard as it looks to make

Yes, but how would that streamline the page, which is the

the page contains a tremendous amount of duplicate []

I am not sure what the question is but anyway some observations:

You are setting the page with the belief that everyone is on a 1024
monitor. Hold a fixed width of 980 and center the page rail to rail, or
set a min/max width so the page width adjusts to the users monitor.
Either way, it would be a good idea to increase the width of the sidebar.

sline...@coastalind.com wrote:

 Scott

The fundamental problem with this page is the factor of 15.
You have a list of possible products listed 15 times so that a
customer could purchase multiple items.

In my opinion javascript might be your best bet for cutting back on
the shear volume of content in the page.

There is another list that might be more helpful on that aspect of the
problem. http://webdesign-L.com/
There could easily be other more appropriate lists. This just happens
to be one I subscribe to.

One approach to tackling the problem would be to have a single list of
products and multiple lines of input.
In a simplistic approach a radio button could be used as the selector.
The form would open with the radio button selected for the first sales line.
The customer could select a product from the master drop-down list,
select quantity, then click a button indicating wish to buy it.
This would add that item to a separate input field and move the radio
button selection to the next item and restyle the drop-down list so
that now it is positioned on the second line.

etc.

All of this would require some nice css styling (this list could help
with that.)
But to run the guts of the process you will need javascript or php or
something similar.

Basically to make that page accessible, in my opinion, you will need
to divide the content size by 15.

Claude

To keep it more topical, you can gain some increases in the speed of

The utility that I am experimenting with at the moment is http://ipadpeek.com/
I have yet to verify that it is presenting an accurate view of an actual ipad.

In fact, looking at your page, I don't see any obvious weirdness.
Can't tell if this means you page has been fixed, or the silly
ipadpeek is not actually showing the true rendering.

I look forward to hearing any news of ipad emulators.

By the way http://www.ipadatelier.com/design-for-ipad.html has several
interesting links. I'm just now running them down.

Isn't the same as:

* { -webkit-text-size-adjust:100%; }

It is said that using the universal selector is bad regarding performance,
would -webkit-text-size-adjust not be inherited if used like this:

body { -webkit-text-size-adjust:100%; }

Re: [css-d] :after and :before psedo elements.

2010-08-26 Thread Climis, Tim
 I think maybe CSS shouldn't change the Dom.

They're not really changing the DOM (at least not IMO). You can't add tags and
structure to the HTML with CSS - you can only change the value of text nodes
(and then, only by adding to them).

Just trying to understand why they are there.

So you can put presentational characters in your display. For example, perhaps
you have a table full of financial data. And on one page, you want negative
numbers to be displayed with a - sign, but in another page, you want the same
numbers displayed in parentheses. Data hasn't changed - just the presentation.

span class=negative200/span

With css for one page
.negative:before {content: '-'}

And for the other page,
.negative:before {content: '(';}
.negative:after {content: ')';}

AFAIK, this is not changed either. The added content is purely
*presentational*.

 With css for one page
 .negative:before {content: '-'}

 And for the other page,
 .negative:before {content: '(';}
 .negative:after {content: ')';}

I'm not sure this a good example as this added content is only served to a
few users...

I'm further not sure if this is a good example because if you don't
have either a minus symbol or parens in the markup your number is not
negative except presentationally.

Thanks Philippe, I recall that now. With browsers adding px to unit-less
values I think these were the two issues *common* to all browsers.

In any case, this should not be a concern for the OP as he is using a valid
