NASA Helps Cops Catch Criminals On Earth With Video Technology Invented By
Space Scientists
FBI and other law enforcement officers - whose investigations are normally
down-to-Earth - recently have been seeking the help of two NASA scientists
who study the Sun and storms like hurricanes.
Why are specialists from such different worlds working together?
The NASA researchers -- using their expertise and equipment for analyzing
satellite video -- created technology that can dramatically improve TV images
including crime scene videos. With law enforcement officers looking over
their shoulders, the scientists use their computer software to turn dark,
jittery images captured by home video, security systems and video cameras in
police cars into clearer, stable images that reveal clues about crimes.
In the last year, Dr. David Hathaway and Paul Meyer at NASA's Marshall Space
Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., have worked on about a dozen criminal
cases with the police and FBI. Hathaway, a solar physicist, is usually busy
studying images of violent explosions on the Sun, and Meyer, an atmospheric
scientist, examines hazardous weather conditions on Earth. The scientists'
foray into the world of forensics began when they helped the FBI analyze
video of the bombing that killed two people and injured hundreds more at the
1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. Hathaway and Meyer successfully
clarified nighttime videotapes made with handheld camcorders, revealing
important details about the bomb and the explosion.
Since their first case with the FBI, Hathaway and Meyer have worked over the
years to refine the VISAR technology, improving it so that it is now ready to
be transferred to companies that produce video enhancement systems for law
enforcement, the military and even home computers.
By the end of this year, the FBI and other criminal investigators will be
able to use the NASA technology at their own stations. The NASA scientists'
invention -- called Video Image Stabilization and Registration, or VISAR -
will be available in a video tracking and enhancement system developed by
Intergraph Government Solutions, a subsidiary of Intergraph Corp. of
Huntsville. The company has signed a licensing agreement with NASA to use
VISAR in its Video Analyst System, which offers broadcast-quality analysis
features on Intel-based hardware.
"After analyzing crime video for detectives and seeing the horrible details
of some of these crimes, it gives me great satisfaction that police can use
NASA technology to put murderers behind bars," said Hathaway.
Hathaway, for example, helped enhance security camera videotape made during
the kidnapping of a Minnesota teenager. In an intensive effort, the FBI and
police worked with Hathaway to identify the abductor and try to find the
teen-ager before she was harmed. Police now believe she was killed. This
summer, the tape was used as evidence in the trial of a man convicted of the
murder.
The VISAR system has proved so useful because it is able to correct the
effects of jitter, rotation and zoom from frame to frame in video. Once
corrected, the registered video images may then be combined to produce
clearer images.
"At NASA, we routinely take satellite images of storm clouds and enhance them
to see what is going on in the atmosphere," said Meyer. "Looking for clues
about what is happening in a storm is similar to being a detective and
finding out what took place at a crime scene."
Commercial interest in licensing the Marshall invention is based on its
ability to do more than just remove noise or "snow" from videos. The software
also corrects for horizontal and vertical camera motion, as well as rotation
and zoom effects. It produces clearer images of moving objects, smoothes
jagged edges and enhances still images.
"By adding VISAR to our Video Analyst Workstation, we can now offer the law
enforcement, military, intelligence and security communities these powerful
capabilities in a comprehensive video analysis system," said Trey McKay,
executive manager of Federal Hardware Solutions at Intergraph Government
Solutions. "We look forward to working with NASA to integrate this innovative
technology to extend our system capabilities and anticipate a significant
impact on our customers and the industry as a whole."
Video imagery for defense applications will also be improved through another
licensing agreement between NASA and BARCO Inc. Display Systems, of Duluth,
Ga. The company is incorporating VISAR into its new computer hardware,

built
near Bogota, with Russian drawing specifications and U.S. telephone numbers,
left no
doubt as to the links among Colombian, Russian and U.S. organized crime,
Colombian
police said Thursday.

In a joint press conference, Colombian police chief Gen. Luis Ernesto
Gilibert and Leo
Arreguin, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Colombia, said
the sub
had been discovered after a three-month investigation.

The sub, with a cargo capacity of 150 to 200 tons and presumably destined to
carry
drugs, was being built "by Colombian drug traffickers with foreign
technology," Gilibert
told reporters.

Colombian drug traffickers "definitely needed foreign help," the police chief
said, to which
Arreguin added that links between Colombian drug traffickers and foreign
organized crime
were evident, as the building of the submarine required a lot of money and
technology.

"In the 32 years I've worked in this field, I have never seen anything like
this," Arreguin
said in reference to the use of a submarine to transport illegal drugs.

"This is not a single cartel... As Gen. Gilibert says, there must be several
groups working
in this shipment (of 200 tons of drugs). We have records and phone numbers to
guide
our investigation," he added.

"We have records which show connections with the Americans and the Russians,
and
we have cellular phones. We are going to follow these leads to where these
gentlemen

sea
- and perhaps now under the sea - drug smugglers are becoming ever more
innovative
in their efforts to outwit authorities and get their cargo across the sea.

Drug agents were astounded to discover a sophisticated submarine under
construction
in a cow pasture outside the capital - 7,500 feet high in the Andes mountains
and 210
miles from any port. It apparently was being built for the sole purpose of
transporting cocaine.

"In the 30-some-odd years I have been in law enforcement I have never seen
anything
like this," Leo Arreguin, the chief of the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration in Colombia,
said Thursday.

The 100-foot submarine, discovered in a warehouse near the suburb of
Facatativa on
Wednesday, could have crossed an ocean, surfaced off Miami or other coastal
cities and
surreptitiously unloaded tons of cargo.

Police were tipped off by suspicious residents who said Americans were in the
area.
Blueprints at the warehouse indicated Russians might have been involved as
well,
authorities said. No arrests have been made.

Colombia produces more than 520 tons of cocaine per year. Smugglers go to
great
lengths to outwit authorities and get the cargo out of the country.

Pilots have flown by starlight using night-vision goggles. Entering U.S.
airspace, they
have dropped their altitude and speed to appear on radar as helicopters
coming in from
offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

The drugs are either unloaded at clandestine airstrips or dropped in sacks in
isolated
areas, to be picked up later.

In the late 1970s, traffickers used light twin-engine planes to smuggle
drugs. During the
1980s, they switched to larger aircraft, like the Lockheed Lodestar. By the
1990s, they
had refitted Boeing 727s, their lights and radar transponders turned off to
avoid detection
as they flew loads of cocaine north.

Small quantities are smuggled by "mules," people who hide drugs in
false-bottom suitcases
or the soles of their shoes, or swallow condoms full of cocaine or have it
surgically inserted
under their skin.

Police say 60 percent of Colombia's cocaine leaves by sea, from miles of
coastline on the
Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

Drugs are hidden on freighters amid legitimate merchandise, or on boats
supposedly out
on fishing expeditions. Speedboats ferry drugs to larger ships offshore. They
all face
interception by Colombian navy and U.S. Coast Guard officials.

Although smugglers have built tiny fiberglass "submersibles" to ferry drugs
in the past,
they were nothing compared to the submarine, which was more than 11 feet in
diameter.

"This is very high-tech," said Colombian Navy Capt. Ismael Idrobo, gazing up
at the sub,
which stood in three sections on lengths of railroad track. "Look at the
rudders and the
pressurized double hull. This could easily travel ... under the surface of
the ocean."

Navy Capt. Fidel Azula, a former submarine captain, said even the Colombian
navy lacked
the knowledge to build such a vessel. "This is unmistakably

The heating up of the Cold War, the Supreme Court¹s decision to end
segregation in 1954, and the establishment of a Communist Cuba in 1959 lead
to an unparalleled growth of extremist organizations from the John Birch
Society on the right to the Fair Play for Cuba Committee on the left.  One
of the lesser known but more influential right wing fringe organizations
that was formed during this period was the Christian Defense League (CDL). 
The CDL managed to meld  anti-communism, anti-Semitism, anti-Castro
activities, and a hatred of the ³liberal² policies of the Kennedy
Administration into a cohesive whole.  It is in this context that the CDL
will be examined. 
  The driving forces behind the rise of the CDL were Reverend Wesley A.
Swift and Colonel William Potter Gale.  It seemed inevitable that they would
gravitate towards each other. Their religious beliefs were similar:  both
were adherents of what is now called Christian Identity, an updated version
of the earlier British Israelite Movement that originated in the late 19th
century.  Christian Identity adherents believe that those of Celtic,
Anglo-Saxon, Nordic, or Aryan origin were the true Israelites, ³the sons of
Adam², and that those of Jewish origin were ³the sons of Satan.² (1)
  The origins of the Christian Defense League is somewhat clouded.  Some
accounts credit its founding to the Reverend Swift,(2) while Colonel Gale
gives credit to Reverend San Jacinto Capt.(3)   Capt, a Baptist minister,
was one of the early pioneers in the Identity Movement.(4)   Gale says that
³the idea of the Christian Defense League was entirely that of Reverend San
Jacinto Capt. He proposed it to me [Col. Gale] who prepared the initial
material in the form of a letter entitled, ³The NAACP represents the negro;
the ADL represents the Jews; who represents YOU - the white Christian?² (5)
  Gale, again speaking in the third person, claims, ³...others were
brought to Dr. Swift¹s [Identity Churches] by Colonel Gale, it was decided
that the time was appropriate for reactivation of the Christian Defense
League (CDL), which had been in limbo¹ these past years.²(6)   In early
1964 the CDL was officially incorporated with Richard G. Butler as
President; attorney Bertrand L. Comparet, Vice President; Steve Foote(7), 
Western Regional Director; and Rear Admiral, USN(Ret) John G. Crommelin,
Eastern Regional Director.(8)
  Swift began as a ³Ku Klux Klan organizer and Klan rifle-team
instructor.²(9)   In 1946, Swift formed the Church of Jesus Christ-Christian
whose fundamental ideology was that Jesus Christ was not Jewish but
Christian and that ³pure blooded whites are the lost children of
Israel.²(10)   By 1953 Swift had become Reverend Gerald L. K. Smith¹s West
Coast representative of the Christian Nationalist Crusade.(11)   Smith, a
former member of William Pelley¹s Silver Shirts and friend of Henry Ford,
was a ³godfather² to many on the far right.  By the early 1960¹s Swift¹s
string of ³Identity² churches spread throughout California.
  In contrast to the somewhat uneducated Swift was the more impressive
William Potter Gale.  Under General MacArthur, Gale became the youngest Lt.
Col. in the U. S. Army where he trained Filipino guerrillas to fight the
Japanese.  After retiring from the Army in June of 1950, Gale, like many
retired military officers, found employment in the aircraft industry,
specifically Hughes Aircraft.  This became what he described as his ³Jekyll
and Hyde² period; leading the Hollywood life by entertaining actors and
singers but hiding his growing involvement in the Identity movement.  At
this same time, he became a member of the Republican Party and later the
Constitution Party.  He ran for Governor of California on the Constitution
Party ticket in 1958 and 1966, and the Republican ticket in 1962.
  Gale¹s association with Wesley Swift came about through San Jacinto
Capt.  Capt, a former Klansman like Swift, introduced Swift to Gale after a
meeting in Los Angeles in the early 1960s.  Gale in turn introduced Richard
Butler to Swift initiating their long-term relationship.  Butler is the
founder and current leader of Aryans Nations.
  William Gale managed to land the CDL a financial ³angel² in the person
of James Oviatt.(12)   Oviatt, owner of Oviatt Clothiers, donated money and
office space at 617 S. Olive St. in Los Angeles for the CDL
headquarters.(13)   It was Gale¹s success that

 The great American socialist Eugene Debs went to prison because he openly
agitated against the World War I draft.
A similar impulse propelled Norman Thomas, who during the 1930s headed the
remnant of the party once led by Debs, into a strange coalition known as the
America First movement organized mainly by right-wingers opposed to U.S.
involvement in World War II. Besides Thomas, who later changed his mind,
many leftists in that era insisted that there was no principled choice
between the totalitarian Axis and the capitalist-imperialist Allies, right
up until 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland.
Echoes of the old America First rallies can be heard today in the motley
domestic movement against NATO, which draws together the likes of Patrick
Buchanan and Noam Chomsky. From the right, Buchanan is, in fact, the proper
heir of the fascist sympathizers whose isolationism defined itself as
America First, a term he proudly uses in his current presidential campaign.
From the left, Chomsky, of course, represents a different ideological
perspective, developed during the Cold War when the horrific conflict in
Vietnam and other Third World countries depleted the legitimacy of the
struggle against communism. Under the strain of those bloodbaths, the
Western alliance cracked but never quite split apart. And the young
activists who took to the streets here and in Europe during that era learned
to be deeply suspicious of military force as an instrument of foreign
policy.

DALLAS (Reuters) - Republican vice presidential candidate Dick
Cheney failed to vote in 14 of 16 elections since moving to Texas
in 1995, including the March primary in which he could have cast
a ballot for his future running mate, George W. Bush, the Dallas
Morning News reported on Friday.

The newspaper said Cheney's 2-for-16 voting history in mainly
state and local elections compares with a five-for-six rate of
election participation over the same period for his Democratic
rival for the vice presidency, Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

Cheney, campaigning on Thursday in Maine, declined requests for
an interview about his voting record, the Morning News said.
Cheney spokesman Dirk Vande Beek said, ``He does think that
voting is important. He did it whenever he could.''

Dallas County records show that Cheney registered to vote in
Texas in December 1995 after moving to the wealthy Dallas enclave
of Highland Park from the Washington, D.C., area. He moved to
Texas as the new chief executive officer of oilfield service
company Halliburton Co.

The records show Cheney voted in the November 1996 presidential
election and the November 1998 race for Texas governor and other
state and local offices.

The 14 elections Cheney skipped in Dallas County included the
1996 presidential and state primaries, primary runoffs and
Highland Park city elections, and the 1999 primary and primary
runoffs.

To avoid a constitutional conflict with running mates from the
same state, Cheney changed his voter registration to his home in
Wyoming in July, days before being tapped as Bush's running mate.
He voted in the subsequent Republican presidential primary there.

The newspaper said records in New Haven, Connecticut, show that
Lieberman voted in all but one of six elections there since
December 1995, missing a November 1997 mayoral contest. Records
were not available before 1995.

Voter logs in Austin and Dallas show that since 1988, Bush has
voted in 38 of 39 elections, missing only the 1992 primary. Gore
has not missed any of the 16 elections since 1972 in his hometown
of Carthage, Tennessee, the newspaper said.

Regarding Aleksei Romanoff, what is your opinion of him? Have you read his claims, 
that Adolf Hitler was in fact the duke of Clarence, who also was Jack the Ripper?

Aleksei Romanoff was also one of the Knights of Malta, and that order is claimed by 
some, to be in the heart of conspiracy. Nevertheless, I found him to be a fine man.

 Supposedly the royals in power now, Elizabeth's line, do not carry this

 Queen Vicitorias line did..they thought through the marriage into a

 Years ago when I did research into Jack the Ripper found that Queen
 Victoria;s doctor and hospital, were experimenting with blood
 transfusions.took blood of lamb for first transfusion and I say
 Hello Dolly.

 So it was my theory that the Ripper was actually like a body robber -
 but they needed blood for transfusions..and as a result certain
 diseases were also transmitted.

 Alexi Romanoff - carried the heomophilia - but little Prince William I
 do not believe he does have this disease.

 Many people have this disease - for instance, Clinton sold bad blood to
 Canada and hemophiliacs then got HIV..in USA AIDS becaue blood banks
 were polluted.

 So it is not necessarily a royal disease; however there was a royal
 line, where some of the men had 6 toes on each foot and so, they learned
 to count to 12 at an early age; and one family alleged to look like
 fish.

 So stories of vampires.what were they telling us?   Bodies found
 drained of blood..but no blood at scene of crime.

 Come to think of it Vince Foster, guess no blood at that scene either -
 and when you are dead if I am correct, you do not bleed or bruise
 anymore?

 Some bloods do not mix.   I had a beautiful siamese cat that ran away
 with an ugle two toned gray cat with one eye.she had kittens, nd one
 had two headsa throw back to a temple dog like face.she slept on
 it and killed it, and it ws darling with wrinkled nosesbut I though
 Siamese Cat and mixed blood with alley cat and comes up with two headed
 Siamese kitten?

 What about these little kids who age fast and when 10 look like little
 old men and women..biological clock runs too fast?

 But anyway the thought crossed my mind that Jack the Ripper was a doctor
 allright.and was experimenting with blood transfusions.or the
 ripper was hired by "body snatchers" like Burke and Hare, for the
 medical profession would buy cadavers

What do Walter Williams, Joseph Sobran, Lew Rockwell, Murray
Rothbard and Ron Paul have in common? Besides being very
bright, responsible, intelligent and erudite men, they believe in the
right of states around the world and in the good old United States of
America to secede.

In this day and age it is the unspoken option that simmers beneath
the growing cultural, political, spiritual, regional, sexual and
economic chasm that has developed over the last 50 years. The
alternative to the spreading social and political balkanization of
America is gathering energy and proponents.

As in any marriage gone bad, there is the hesitancy to speak the
unspeakable. After attempts to change, to reform, to come to grips,
to adapt, the basic problem and irreconcilable differences are still
there. They grow like a killing tumor until the pain becomes so
unbearable the only choice is to cut the cause of the pain from the
body. Usually "cures" for this sickness only put off the inevitable.

Our differences have become too profound, too wide and too deep.
The anxiety and tension expand and our only options will be to fight
or flee. The divorce, the separation, the final recognition that there
can be no resolution might salvage what little love remains between
some groups of Americans and others. So, while there is still the
desire to remain at peace and not totally destroy the other, the need
to separate begins to fill the air and a day will come when it cannot
be denied.

The American Secession from Britain

The American Revolution was not a revolution in the strictest sense
of the word. It was a separation, a secession, because the British
government was not overthrown; rather, a new entity came into
being out of an old union. The independent United States of
America was that new creation. England and the monarchy,
however, remained and still exist today. Eventually, our mother
country became our friend and ally. We have fought several wars
together since the dissolution of the American-British marriage, and
the bond is stronger than ever.

After the secession, the U.S. Constitution and federalism were not
created overnight. Our Republic grew out of the Articles of
Confederation of 1781 into a Constitutional Republic.

As Joseph Sobran stated in his essay, "The Right to Secede," "The
original 13 states formed a confederation, under which each state
retained its sovereignty, freedom, and independence. The
Constitution didn't change this; each sovereign state was free to
reject the Constitution. The new powers of the federal government
were granted and delegated by the states, which implies the
states were prior and superior to the federal government."

Sobran goes on to say that Hamilton and Madison hoped secession
would never happen but they never denied it was a right and a
practical possibility. The states would not be "rebelling" because the
states were sovereign and free and secession was the basic principle
of "self-preservation."

Today the problem is that we are no longer a united people joined
by a common culture, educational system, basic religious beliefs,
and tolerance. The fabric of America is fraying and dissolving even
as diversity is celebrated. As our common heritage and belief
systems are destroyed by something alien to them, a compromise of
values and political philosophy may not be possible.

Modern trends have shattered our unanimity and common bond.
Trying to put the American humpty-dumpty together again will only
lead to our final dissolution or an unacceptable tyranny of the
majority at some point in the future.

The trends that have been our undoing include a denial of the Bill of
Rights and its original interpretation. Add to that a legal system not
in keeping with the intent of the Founders, the destruction of the
separation of powers as well as an imperial executive branch, and a
tax system so corrupt, unfair and burdensome that no amount of
tinkering is going to fix it. Additionally, we have rejected the binding
nature of our religious heritage, which was the basis for our
common purpose.

Include the exponential increase in the power of the state and the
growth of the government bureaucracy, and the late great United
States is on life support. Well-meaning conservatives offer the
argument that if they get in power they will downsize government
and decrease the power of the state. Often their actions belie their
words. Many in the House and Senate vote to expand police powers
and do nothing to keep activist judges from the bench or prevent
the profusion of legislation that adds power to the state. Apparently,
they dont understand that in the history of mankind government
has never willingly given up power or perks in order

 After all Einstein had a theory and now the facts are beginning to show
 his theory may ot have been his at all but was stolen from an Italian,
 and some of the "theory" was not based on facts - and it is still
 therefore a theory.

The theory of evolution is still only a theory, too...but Darwin, Einstein, and anyone 
else who worked on
either evolutionary or relativity theory based their theories on years and decades of 
scientific research and
sound mathematical principles.

While you and your sub-personalities just throw out outrageous claims, and give 
nothing to back them up with.


 And please June, just the facts - no speculation but with just the
 facts, there is no conspiracy theory, is there.

Speculation is fine, as long as it is clearly labeled speculation.  I don't go around 
throwing outrageous
claims on this list which are just my personal opinion or belief, and expect people to 
accept it as 'fact'.


PS:   And that is the third time you have ended a sentence with a
preposition...now I will not mention your grammatical errors again -
seems unnecessarily crude.

At least I'm not compounding irrational rants with gross misspellings...

They're all Hanoverians.  The only difference is that back in Victoria's time, they 
inbred with each other
(almost all the royal houses of Europe were related to each other).  Nowadays the 
royals look for spouses
outside of the family circle.

And it is inbreeding -- which you advocate -- which brings these sort of diseases out.

Tends to make the offspring a little nuts, too.

Since you are such an advocate, we must presume that your family has practiced this, 
hmmm?

Why don't you go gather some FACTS regarding the Ripper murders?

FACT number one:  no bodies were 'snatched', all the victims were left behind to be 
found.  They were also
butchered beyond any use by a medical college.

FACT number two:  the crime scenes were drenched in the blood of the victims, the very 
bloodiness of the crime
scenes is what raised these murders above the milieu of the petty everyday killings 
that occured in that
quarter of Whitehall.  Hence it is extremely doubtful that the murderer was saving 
their blood in a jar to use
for transfusions.

FACT number three:  only one victim had any body part (kidneys) removed.  The killer 
sent one back to Scotland
Yard a few days later along with a taunting note claiming to have eaten the other 
kidney.  It is highly
unlikely that that other kidney was utilized in a medical procedure.

Have you read his claims, that Adolf Hitler was in fact the
duke of Clarence, who also was Jack the Ripper?

While an argument has been made that the Ripper may have been the Duke of Clarence, 
even if Adolph Hitler was
the Duke of Clarence (and I have no idea how he could be), that does NOT mean that 
Adolph Hitler was also Jack
the Ripper.

Besides never having resided in London, at the time of the Ripper murders Adolph 
Hitler would have been an
infant or toddler, if he'd even been born yet.

From their inception in the 1840s, urban police departments have been
organized along a military model. Widespread public drunkenness, high
crime
rates, race and ethnic riots and labor strife that often turned violent
resulted in law enforcement agencies that "patrolled" city streets on a
continual basis.
There is nothing inherently wrong with structuring police departments
along
military lines; agencies so designed exist in many democratic countries
committed to the "rule of law." However, a problem arises when an
organization with a militaristic orientation entrusted with significant
power comes to believe that it is literally engaged in combat.
Over the past 30 to 35 years almost every administration at the federal
level has waged its version of the "war on crime," and "war on drugs," a
philosophy that has been embraced by many big-city police
departments. Patrick Murphy, who headed police commissions of in three
cities (Detroit, New York and Washington D.C.) stated, "There is no doubt
that this war-on-drugs rhetoric is part of the problem . . . raiding all
these crack houses, more guns on the street, cops getting automatics . . .
It has cops so psyched up they think they're in combat."
The difference between city streets and a war zone is that in the former
police officers encounter fellow citizens with constitutional rights
while,
in the latter, soldiers seek out and attempt to destroy the
enemy. According to the testimony of recently convicted Los Angeles
police
officer Rafael Perez, it is clear that some members of Rampart CRASH
(Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) thought of themselves and
their jobs more in terms of soldiers than peace officers.
Police officers who take the life of another human being in the line of
duty typically experience remorse, and in some cases are so
psychologically
distraught by the experience that it precludes them from continuing their
careers in law enforcement. Perez stated that the night unarmed Juan
Saldana was shot and killed, he and two other officers "celebrated" in a
bar until 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. the next day.
While this behavior seems incomprehensible to most people, it is
understandable in the context that Saldana and other suspects were viewed
as the enemy. Although it is true that criminally active gang members (as
well as law violating non-gang members) are enemies of "law and order,"
they are not adversaries in a military sense to be dispatched as "targets
of opportunity."
Over and above teaching individuals a variety of soldiering skills,
military boot camp is primarily about changing people. After a lifetime of
being taught that human life is sacred, recruits learn that they must kill
their adversary on command. One way of accomplishing this deadly goal is
by
dehumanizing the enemy; that is, by redefining him as something less than
human; an animal, for example. Once a designated group loses its status as
human beings, members of that collectivity can be destroyed with few if
any
moral and ethical ramifications for the killers.
My guess is that some members of Rampart CRASH internalized this aspect of
the military ethos; hardly surprising in a specialized unit with a strong
sense of purpose and pride. It is worth noting that this dehumanization
process is made easier when the enemy are members of a different racial or
ethnic group, a situation that is not uncommon concerning the composition
of urban police forces and gangs.
During the Vietnam War some American soldiers would attach a playing card
to the bodies of Viet Cong casualties. For example, one Marine
reconnaissance team's "death card" was an ace of spades adorned with a
skull and crossbones.
While Rampart CRASH officers could not tag the individuals they shot with
cards, they did the next best thing via presenting their fellows with
plaques at shooting parties that featured playing cards with bullet holes
through them. One officer noted that while this practice might appear
"barbaric," "it's good for morale," and that individuals "talk about the
shootings, how they're heroes or whatever." And just as it is better to
kill one's foe than wound him on the battlefield, CRASH awards with a
black
card signifying death were more prestigious than red cards indicating that
someone was wounded.
Shooting parties not only exacerbate an already formidable "we/they"
perspective regarding the police and gang members, but are likely to
facilitate additional shootings. People typically strive to repeat
behavior
for which they have been praised, especially when this adulation comes
from
significant others in a close knit quasi-military unit. Rampart CRASH is
such a unit.

Should women have the right to vote?

UNDETERRED by his reputation for being dull, American women are rushing to
support Al Gore in such large numbers that he could be carried by the female
vote all the way to the White House.
Opinion polls published yesterday suggest that the Vice-President's
much-ridiculed efforts to reinvent himself as an "alpha male" - or leader of
the pack - are reaping dividends with women, if not with men. In one taken by
the Washington Post, women supported Mr Gore by a 52-38 per cent margin over
George W Bush, while men gave the Texas governor an identical lead of 14
points, meaning that there was a so-called gender gap of 28 points.

Overall, the two men were tied at 47-47 in what is shaping up as the closest
presidential election for 20 years. Women, the foundation of President
Clinton's victories in 1992 and 1996, seem now to have swung behind his
deputy. The appointment of the genial Joe Lieberman as a running mate and the
softening of Mr Gore's image as a suit-wearing bureaucrat have all seemingly
improved his ratings with women.

The passionate kiss he gave to his wife Tipper on stage at the close of the
Democratic convention, a four-second clinch described as a "lingering
liplock" in one report, may have made him more appealing to female voters.
The contrast with the beginnings of Mr Gore's run for the presidency is
stark. In the early part of the Democratic primary campaign, the
Vice-President trailed badly among women voters behind his rival, Bill
Bradley.

Campaign staff consulted "focus groups" of women voters who told them that Mr
Gore appeared dull and unmasculine. Following the advice of his eldest
daughter, Karenna, Mr Gore engaged Naomi Wolf, a feminist writer and
journalist, to advise him on an image makeover and began to favour "earth
tones" in his clothing and to wear blue jeans and cowboy boots rather than
dark suits and ties.

He also went on the attack against Mr Bradley and trounced his challenger in
the primaries. Now Mr Gore has closed the huge lead enjoyed by Mr Bush, whose
relaxed demeanour continues to appeal much more to men. Remarkably, the
latest figures show Mr Gore enjoying even greater favour among female voters
than Mr Clinton did four years ago, when a tidal wave of "soccer moms" won
him a huge re-election victory over Bob Dole, the Republican challenger.

The fact that Mr Bush has managed to negate the abortion issue in his party's
manifesto this year and aimed his central message of "compassionate
conservatism" squarely at women voters makes it all the more extraordinary
that he is trailing so badly among them. The situation has led to cautious
optimism within the Gore campaign. A member of Mr Gore's staff, who asked not
to be named, said yesterday: "We are pleased and astonished by these figures
about the Vice-President's appeal to women.

"But when you see something as dramatic as that, you can't help but think
there is a lot of room for change."

South Africa's health minister, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, has fuelled
the debate on theHIV-Aids crisis in the country by circulating a
controversial theory that claims the virus was introduced into Africa by a
global conspiracy intent on reducing the continent's population.

The theory is expounded by American author William Cooper in a chapter in
his book Behold, a Pale Horse.  He claims the Illuminati - a conspiracy to
control the world - introduced Aids to Africa via the smallpox vaccine in
1978, even though the last recorded case of the disease was in 1977. He
also alleges that a known cure is being kept secret until enough people
have died.

The health minister, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, circulated copies of the
chapter to the health ministers of South Africa's nine provinces at their
last meeting. On her instruction, a local newspaper revealed yesterday, her
parliamentary officer also distributed copies to provincial premiers.
The Western Cape health minister, Nick Koornhof, says that with it he
received an anonymous letter, marked top secret and "for African eyes
only", warning that the Aids virus could be in any vaccine coming into
Africa from the West.

I've been getting reports from all over the United States and Europe of
heightened Chemtrails activity up from a decreased (but still present)
activity over the summer months of June, July and August. I've also been
reading reports of the growing fungal-based diseases in humans, plants and
animals as well as skin and respiratory cancer rates around the world.
Judging by the news that just came out of NASA Headquarters yesterday,
September 7th, the connection seems all too clear to this researcher.

On September 7th, 2000, Release 00-137 reported to NASA News that "the
largest ozone hole ever was found over the Antartic" and that it was the
outrageous size of "three times larger than the landmass of the United
States". Measured by a NASA spectrometer, this ozone "hole" (sounds more like
a separate planet!) measured a record size of approximately 11 million square
miles (28.3 million square kilometers) when measured September 3rd, 2000.
This beats the earlier record of 10.5 million square miles (27.2 million
square kilometers) measured September 19, 1998. Apparently, the spread of the
hole's size has stabilized but the low levels of its interior continue to
fall - this is somewhat typical, however, as the lowest readings in the ozone
hole are seen in late September, early October.

For those "ozone skeptics" and/or "ozone spin doctors" out there who keep
telling us that the growing ozone holes and their concomittent damage are a
"normal cycling" and that there's nothing to be concerned about, this
researcher would ask them to please answer these questions:

1. Why the frenetic worldwide activity in our skies to create some sort of
cloud cover via what we now call "Chemtrails"? 2. Why does the United Nations
have extensive Global Warming Protocols in place outlining the real
environmental and human dangers of growing ozone holes with worldwide
participation of countries involved in ozone measuring, ozone-patching, and
ozone-effects related research? 3. Why are the rates of human skin cancer
occurrences and deaths skyrocketing? 4. Why the proliferation of fungal-based
diseases in both humans, animals and plants? 5. Why are our amphibian
populations dying off and becoming extinct with genetic defects? 6. Why are
polar animal researchers finding "skinny" polar bears, a phenomena that
occurs when their environment becomes too warm, the polar ice melts, the
bears cannot get out into the water on ice flows to "fish", hence they do not
eat for months and are forced to live off their existing fat stores, thus
losing enormous amounts of weight, their young dying from lack of nutrition
from their mothers? 7. Why have researchers found newly formed "lakes" at the
North Pole from melted ice?


If its all nothing to be concerned about, why is the United Nations spending
billions of dollars on an ozone research program when they are financially in
the arrears to begin with? One would think that such a seemingly "trivial"
and "natural cycling occurrence" such as some ozone critics would have us
believe would not warrant a body like the United Nations taking such a
profound and expensive interest in. Such acute and widespread activity that
just happens to mirror the acute and widespread and has-to-be expensive
activity in another area which critics also want to write off to "normal and
trivial" activity, and that would be..ta-da! Chemtrails.

Although reading NASA's new spectrographic analysis reports on the new
dimensions of the astronomical size of the Antarctic ozone hole lends
credence and support to those of us researchers who can connect the dots in
the ozone-environmental breakdown-human disease-Chemtrails maze, why do the
rocket scientists at NASA have to be the ones to break the news to us in bit
by bit sound bites and press releases? Is it the "give them a little at a
time" psychology? Too much bad news at once causes chaos? Maybe But, with all
those "men" in our United States government, especially the two groups
running for Presidential office this year talking about "accountability and
morality and honesty" ad nauseam, and in the United Nations even, doesn't any

The slogan "Marxism is dead" was proclaimed almost immediately on the fall
of the Soviet Union in 1991. Very soon after, a strange ideological
inversion occurred. In place of "the inevitable victory of the proletariat"
which Marx had predicted almost 150 years earlier, there was the "inevitable
process of globalisation" instead. The victory of the working classes of the
world, according to scientific socialism, was inevitable because of
historically deepening contradictions between capitalist productive forces
and relations, contradictions which would by dialectical necessity issue in
socialism (or "the first stage of communism" as Marx put it).
This defining certitude of the greatest oppositional movement in the history
of capitalism did not, as we know, turn out to be in accord with the facts.
Much has been made of the failure of this "inevitable revolution." An
industry of post-modernism has arisen to attack Marx's meta-narrative of
necessity for violating the contingent, the plural and the free. But a still
deeper irony of history has emerged which no-one in the post-modern global
order has yet noticed.
The certitude of an inevitable world revolution has merely shifted sides.
What was once abhorred by liberal theory as the metaphysic of "Marxist
economic determinism" has become instead the neo-liberal program of
"inevitable economic restructuring." What was formerly condemned as a brutal
violation of people's freedom to decide how they live was now declared a
matter in which "there is no alternative." All societies on earth have now
been issued one decree. "Society must adjust to the necessary changes of
globalisation, or perish."
As for the reversal of Marxist and market positions on the question of
knowing history in advance and the economic necessity of society-wide shock
treatments and social re-engineerings, this astonishing transferral of
superpower identities has transpired in the dark regions of the Western
ruling-class psyche. Its psychopathological projection and re-introjection
remains repressed today. But the irony is that no moral anchor was more
deep-seated before the fall of "the Marxist state" than repudiation of such
"denials of free will" and of "moral choice." No doctrine was thought more
objectionable by such cornerstone social ethicists as Karl Popper and Isaiah
Berlin than one prescribing belief in whole societies' submission to "the
external forces of historical necessity." The heroic story of Western
civilisation was finally triumphant, most believed, when such scientistic
predestinations of world power had been defeated by the free world in the
victory over Nazism, and the defeat of "the evil empire" of the USSR But
hardly had this last historic victory of global freedom been won than memory
of the old enemy of historical inevitability dissolved unremarked into thin
air.
The "global market revolution" has ever since been declared as an overriding
destiny, determining the future as surely as the laws of nature make objects
fall and heat rise. Few in this era dare to declare a contrary belief. The
test is simply to look at any day's newspapers or television broadcast to
see if this ultimate assumption is once overtly questioned by any
representative of the world's decision-making institutions or those who
comment on their policies. The ineluctable destiny of all societies on earth
to compete for survival within this final global order-no alternative is
conceived possible-has achieved a status beyond doctrinal dogma. It has
become a regulating principle of public consciousness. So occupied with its
demands are the mass media across cultures and continents, so commandeered
by its funding regime have the academies and sciences of the world become,
that one comes to believe that indeed this "new revolution of shareholder
value" is inevitable. When Winston finally confesses in Orwell's 1948 novel
1984 that "at last he loved Big Brother," he sounded the tocsin of a time to
come. One day soon, in under a half century, all would assume as their home
of life what they had earlier set their soul against-an order imposed on
them by wheels of a higher, inexorable power whose finally defining command
is that there is no alternative but to submit to it. More astoundingly, all
human will would be urged to dedicate itself above all to serving its
demands.
When Margaret Thatcher made the slogan "There is no alternative" so famous
that the acronym TINA has since become a transnational watchword of
recognition, the backbone of six centuries of British working class struggle
first resisted as a battle for the future. But saturation conditioning of
consciousness with no other public message permitted reproduction eventually

smashed and scraped. Cooking pots smeared with blood. A few years ago,
anthropologists in the American Southwest found the grisly remains of what
appeared to be an ancient cannibal feast, but they lacked the biological
proof - until now.
 Laboratory tests on some of the artifacts, including a piece of
human excrement, have revealed traces of a human protein that scientists
say
is the first direct evidence of cannibalism among the Anasazi, whose empire
stretched into present-day Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.
 "This proves they put the meat in their mouths," said Richard
Marlar, a molecular biologist at the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center in Denver who developed the biochemical tests to detect the protein.
"If you didn't eat human beings, this protein would not show up."
 The excavation site, consisting of three collapsed pit dwellings
nicknamed Cowboy Wash near Dolores, Colo., was occupied about 1150 A.D. It
was abandoned after seven people were butchered there.
 The findings were published in Thursday's issue of the journal
Nature.

Palestinian pupils returning to school in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have
received new school textbooks on civics. These books are the first written
specifically for Palestinians and are important because they have replaced
the Jordanian and Egyptian volumes that the Palestinians have used for
years.
Many Israelis hoped the new textbooks would emphasize Israeli-Palestinian
cooperation and peace partnership. However, the Palestinians claim that the
purpose of the texts is their educational and not their political value.
Maps in a sixth-grade civics textbook depict a shape separating the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, but do not say that the shape is Israel. Nor does the
map include Tel Aviv, although it does pinpoint other Israeli cities.
Israel is characterized as an "occupier" and treated more like an old enemy
than a new peace partner. "The Palestinian people were expelled from their
land as a result of the Israeli occupation of Palestine," the civics text
says, "and have been subjected to massacres and banishment from their land
to neighboring countries."

MODIIN, Yom Shlishi (Third Day-"Tuesday"), 5 Elul, 5760 (Gregorian
Date: September 5, 2000) (Hijri Date:  6 Jumad Thani, 1421), Root 
Branch: One week after P.M. Ehud Barak fired seven Israeli diplomats, one
of them, the Israeli ambassador to France, Eliahu Ben-Elissar was
dead.

According to the Jerusalem Post, "The circumstances of his death have
sparked a number of rumors. 'The rumors surrounding his death are vicious',
a Foreign Ministry spokesman said".
And why shouldn't they be?  Here is what we have been told.
On the morning of Shabbat, August 12, Ben-Elissar arrived at the Hotel
Atala, a rather obscure and unimposing establishment which for years has
been where the Israeli embassy has put up guests and arranged meetings.
Ben-Elissar was not accompanied by his bodyguards.
As Maariv observed, "In Israel, questions are being asked about the
ambassador's security arrangements.  The central question is why Ben-Elissar
arrived without his bodyguards, which according to regulations, must
accompany him every time he leaves his apartment".
Missing, also, was Ben-Elissar's French police protection.  According to the
Jerusalem Post, "A special branch of the French Police usually shadows every
move made by VIPs at risk".  But Ben-Elissar's Israeli and French bodyguards
were not anywhere near him, "apparently at his own request".
At noon, Ben-Elissar, aged 68, told hotel staff he wasn't feeling well.  By
1:30 P.M. he was dead of a heart attack, though according to one embassy
employee quoted by Maariv, "He was in the peak of health.  He never
complained of poor health and was rarely ill".
French police conducted a most perfunctory investigation and within hours
declared Ben-Elissar's death natural.  Of course, these same police
similarly concluded that Princess Diana died in "an accident".
Call it a coincidence, but on the day of Ben-Elissar's death, I received the
following e-mail, paraphrased because of the halting English:  "I just read
your article, 'Rigged'.  How did you know about the French connection to
Rabin's murder?  I discovered it three months ago after a discussion with an
agent of French Intelligence.  It's all true".
I suspect that Ben-Elissar also knew about the French connection to Rabin's
murder.  The only possible reason he would have interrupted his Sabbath to
go to the hotel was to meet someone.  Yet not one press report reached this
obvious conclusion, thus no one is asking who the ambassador met on his
final morning.
Whoever the person with whom Ben-Elissar met was, he was either a guest of
the Israeli embassy staying at the hotel or was familiar enough with embassy
habits to choose it for a fatal meeting.
The following scenario makes the most sense to me due to the paucity of
information available.
At least one French intelligence official has been leaking the fact that his
government helped murder Yitzhak Rabin in order to place their agent, Shimon
Peres, in the Israeli Prime Minister's office.
Word reached Barak that Ben-Elissar had been apprised of the truth and Barak
had Ben-Elissar recalled.  To avert suspicion, Barak also recalled six other
diplomats at the same time.  But in his last days in Paris, Ben-Elissar
continued gathering the facts.
Ben-Elissar was lured to the hotel with the promise of additional proofs and
told that he must arrive without any security.  Once there, the "informant"
spiked Ben-Elissar's coffee or utilized another means to initiate a mortal
cardiac arrest.

Abortion and the English Language

In his famous essay "Politics and the English Language," George Orwell
analyzed the corrupting influence of dishonest politics on the way we speak
and think. There is no better example than the effect abortion has had on
our language.

Though abortion -- including the killing of viable infants at the verge of
birth -- is now a sacrament of the Democratic Party, nobody admits to being
"pro-abortion"; they are "pro-choice." This is an obvious lie. The right to
choose anything presupposes the right to live. The child, fetus, embryo, or
whatever you want to call the entity growing within its mother's womb has no
"choice" about being killed. It will never have a choice about anything.

The pro-abortion side is pro-abortion in the same way that advocates of
slavery were pro-slavery. "Oh," they protest, "but we don't insist that
everyone get an abortion; we only want people" -- that is, mothers -- "to
have a choice!" Then nobody was pro-slavery either, since nobody insisted
that every white man own a slave; they were "pro-choice." They wanted each
white man to be "free" to decide whether to buy slaves; or they wanted every
state to decide whether to permit slavery. Of course they overlooked the
obvious fact that the slaves themselves had no choice; in their minds this
was irrelevant.

The bad conscience of the pro-aborters shows in their studious avoidance of
the word kill to describe what abortion is. Why be coy about it? We don't
mind speaking of "killing" when we kill lower life forms. Lawn products kill
weeds; mouthwashes kill germs; insecticides kill bugs; mousetraps kill mice.
If the human fetus is an insignificant little thing, why shrink from saying
an abortion kills it? But the pro-abortion side prefers the evasive
euphemism that abortion "terminates a pregnancy."

As Orwell noted, dishonest people instinctively prefer the abstract to the
concrete. Abstract language avoids creating unpleasant mental images that
might cause horror and shame; concrete language may remind us of what we are
really doing. This is why military jargon dehumanizes the targets of bombs
and artillery: so that soldiers and pilots won't vividly imagine the men,
women, and children they are killing. Part of the job of military leadership
is to anesthetize the consciences of fighting men. And political leaders
(who usually start the wars in the first place) do their part by describing
the bombing of cities as "defending freedom."

In the modern world people are trained to avoid looking directly at the
effects of violence they commit or sanction. If possible, the killing is
delegated to specialists, who themselves are increasingly remote from their
victims -- as in recent U.S. bombings of Iraq and Yugoslavia, where American
casualties were nearly zero. Most of us don't mind if our military kills
people on the other side of the world; we feel no pain, even vicariously. We
may even buy the official explanation that our bombs are "preventing another
Holocaust." It may seem otherwise to the Iraqis and Slavs on whose homes
those bombs are falling.

But just as the news media refrain from showing us what those bombs actually
do, they never show us what an abortion looks like. They even refuse to
carry ads by abortion opponents, on grounds that pictures of slaughtered
fetuses are in "bad taste." They certainly are in bad taste; all atrocities
are. But the media are willing to show some atrocities, as in the killing
fields of Rwanda a few years ago. Since we're forever debating abortion, why
not let us see one? Why the blackout?

The answer, of course, is that the news media themselves are pro-abortion.
They adopt the dishonest language of the pro-abortion side: pro-choice,
fetus, terminate, and -- my favorite -- abortion provider (to make the
abortionist sound like a humanitarian).

A few years ago NBC produced a sympathetic movie about a woman seeking an
abortion -- Norma McCorvey, the "Roe" of Roe v. Wade. But when Mrs. McCorvey
later changed her mind and became an active opponent of abortion, did NBC do
a sequel? Unimaginable.

We have to keep our guard up at all times against political language,
especially in seemingly bland journalism, that is subtly infected with
propagandistic purposes.

HAVING not slept since the previous dawn, Brynle Williams, unofficial leader of
the Stanlow oil refinery blockade in Cheshire, was becoming irritable. "Don't
even begin to think that this is all we can do," he said. "If we really wanted
to, we could bring this country to its knees.

"Here alone we could very quickly bring in 100 tractors as well as blocking the
railways. The police could do nothing to stop us, and they know it. But that's
not what we are about. All we want is to see an unfair tax lifted." Mr
Williams, 51, a farmer from Cilcain, near Mold, insists that for all his
suffering, most recently from escalating fuel costs, neither he nor his fellow
protesters are about to mimic their French counterparts.

"Here we appreciate the rule of law. We've been getting on very well with the
police and we'll carry on doing so." By late morning the situation had
developed into an amicable stand-off, involving around 30 pickets. One lorry
bore the message: "How can we survive when you're screwing us, Mr Blair?" On
its tailboard was written: "This is only the start of things to come, so give
in now Mr Blair."

Mr Williams, vice-chairman of the Farmers' Union of Wales, claimed it would be
an "astute political move" for the Prime Minister to reduce the tax on fuel. He
said: "I don't want to see any militancy at all. But you can be sure we won't
be giving up until something is done."

German truckers block traffic in fuel price protest

BERLIN, Sept 9 (Reuters) - German truck drivers and farmers brought traffic to
standstill in the northern town of Hildesheim on Saturday in a protest against
rising fuel prices.

Police said some 100 trucks had blocked streets in the town for about three
hours following a protest on Friday evening in the northern town of Uelzen
where 40 trucks, five tractors and five buses had massed to mark a visit by
Transport Minister Reinhard Klimmt.

Protesters in Hildesheim had fastened placards to their trucks with slogans
such as: "Nowhere are drivers so squeezed as in Germany" and "Oil prices are
ruining us."

Klimmt, who on Friday said the government would not reduce controversial
"ecology taxes" on fuel and noted petrol was still considerably cheaper in
Germany than elsewhere in Europe, later addressed some 100 demonstrators in
Uelzen.

Opposition parties and motorists organisations have been turning up the
pressure on the Berlin government to ease energy taxes since mass action by
French protesters this week won concessions from Paris.

French truckers and farmers slowly began lifting their blockades on Saturday
after choking fuel supplies across the country. Paris has offered the
protesters a 15 percent cut in diesel fuel taxes, but the drivers want a 20
percent reduction.

Finance Minister Hans Eichel said on Saturday Germany would not answer higher
oil prices with cuts to energy taxes, noting that taxpayers were already due to
get major relief next year when a government tax reform programme kicks in.
Speaking to journalists on the fringe of a meeting of finance ministers in
Versailles, Eichel said anybody who had cut energy taxes "had already lost" and
was just handing money to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries
(OPEC).

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's centre-left government, which rules in coalition
with the Greens, plans to increase petrol taxes by six pfennigs (2.6 U.S.
cents) per litre each year through 2002 to fund reductions in state pensions
contributions.

The conservative opposition warned that Germans would copy their French
neighbours and take to the streets if the government did not cut fuel taxes.
"The government must at least forego the next step of the ecology tax to
counteract the weakness of the euro," said Dirk Fischer, transport spokesman
for the Christian Democrats.

The Environment Ministry said it understood consumers' anger, but said the best
thing drivers could do was save petrol by driving more slowly or switching off
their engines when stopped at traffic lights or held up in traffic jams.

Britain: Ritalin ban recommended for children under five years of age

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), an independent watchdog
that rules on the appropriate use of drugs, is to recommend that Ritalin should
not be given to children under five years of age. Whilst it may still be
prescribed for older children, there will be clearer definitions of the
conditions for its use.

Ritalin (methylphenidate), an amphetamine-like stimulant, was referred to NICE
by Health Secretary Alan Milburn. It is prescribed for children who are
diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
ADHD is defined as developmentally inappropriate inattention and impassivity,
with or without hyperactivity. Symptoms attributed to the condition include
distraction, impatience and difficulty concentrating. It occurs in children of
both sexes, but is diagnosed four times more frequently in boys. However, it is
a condition whose clinical recognition is disputed by some in the medical
profession.

In the last decade prescriptions for Ritalin virtually doubled every year.
However, last year only 157,900 prescriptions were issued compared to 126,500
the year before following growing fears over the increasing use of drugs to
treat hyperactivity among children, some as young as two. Steve Baldwin,
professor of clinical psychology at Teeside University, has consistently
opposed the prescription of Ritalin. He said, There's definitely the start of
a levelling off. Doctors are getting very worried about prescribing it.

In the BBC documentary entitled Kids On Pills, screened earlier this year,
Baldwin described the effect of Ritalin on children: Apparently the child is
improving but what's really happening is there is less behaviour and the
emotion is cut off and the feeling is cut off, and what we're left with is
children that behave like robots and zombies.

Parents concerned about the side effects the drug is having on their children
have taken out court proceedings against doctors and drug companies. In the
North-West, a group of parents are trying to bring to account doctors they
claim have ignored the manufacturer's recommendations that Ritalin only be
prescribed for children over five, and then only for a month at a time. In
Texas, parents are taking action against Norvatis Pharmaceuticals, the
manufacturer of Ritalin, for an alleged failure to warn of its impact on
children's cardiovascular and nervous systems. Overload, a charity based in
Scotland, is pursuing action against various National Health Service Trusts in
connection with the side effects suffered by children while on psychotropic
drugs.

A new lobby group, Stimulants Are Not The Answer (Santa), has also been set up
to press for legislative changes that will tighten up the availability of
Ritalin. Their website (www.santa.inuk.com) opposes the notion that ADHD is
caused by a brain disorder for which stimulant medication is the only effective
answer. They stress that to find the right treatment; ADHD should not be
regarded as a single specific disorder but an umbrella term for all kinds of
possible problems that can lead to uncontrollable behaviour. The problem must
generally be viewed as a social/psychological issue, rather than a biological
one, they insist.

Santa's coordinator Eileen Tracy recently told the Independent newspaper; In
France they have hardly any incidence of ADHD. If you want to put a child on a
stimulant, you have to go to a hospital, you can't just go to a GP [General
Practitioner].

Richard DeGrandpre, an American pharmo-psychologist, author of Ritalin Nation,
says that ADHD is not a medical condition but a result of today's rushed
society, which causes vulnerable children to crave stimuli. He says that whilst
Ritalin is chemically different to cocaine, its effects are the same. It works
by feeding the craving with a backdrop of stimulation, but gives the children
the opposite of what they need, which is a calmer, quieter, more engaged
routine to wean them away from their need for continual sensation.

Recently a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research cited sleep
deprivation among children as another factor that leads a number of them to be
misdiagnosed as either having ADHD or suffering a mental illness. The study
carried out in Holland found that large numbers of children are either not
sleeping long enough, or their sleep is of poor quality. According to their
findings, one in four children aged between nine and 14 years of age do not
feel rested at school and 15 percent have sleep problems.

is that we wouldn't presume to be so bold as to tell another person what she
ought to do regarding her pregnancy...it's HER body and HER choice and most
thinking Americans respect that.

This is bogus logic, based on the a priori assumption that a fetus is a
person. That a fetus is a person is not a fact, but a religious doctrine.
As such it aplies only to the practitioners of those religions of which it
is a tenet. Stop trying to cram your religion down the rest of our
throats.  Hasn't 1500 years of religious warfare been enough? When are you

will call Johnson an isolationist, but friends (perhaps admirers of Patrick

A veteran, and veteran academic on China and Japan, offers a serious indictment
of the security system the U.S. organized in East Asia circa 1950 to contain
the communists. Convinced the time has arrived to close down bases, bring
troops home, and renegotiate extant security treaties, Johnson examines, from a
highly critical, almost excoriating viewpoint, the American presence in Japan,
Korea, Okinawa, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia. He wants to connect
with general-interest readers, perceiving them blinkered to the resentments
engendered by U.S. military activity. When anti-Americanism erupts, Americans
tend to be perplexed by it (why are those ingrates rioting?), they and their
leaders believing their foreign policy to be animated by virtuous liberal

In this timely book, noted Asian specialist Johnson (Japan: Who Governs?, 1994)
addresses the effects of American global interventionism, delivering a grim
warning that the United States will soon experience severe reprisals (or
blowback) from the victims of government policies kept secret from the American
people. Johnson begins his book with a confession. He admits that as a naval
officer after the Korean War, and as an academic who studied the formation of
Chinese communism, he was not in a position to witness the results of American
power disinterestedly. In fact, he wholeheartedly shared the assumption that
America was the necessary guarantor of world peace. Only after his pathbreaking
exploration of Japan's economic renewal in MITI and the Japanese Miracle (1973)
did he conclude that the US mission to protect the ``free world'' was a
justification for empire. This insight became especially clear in the wake of
the Cold War. That the US has not significantly reduced or adjusted its
military position after the fall of the Soviet Union reveals, to Johnson, this
country's imperialistic aims. Moreover, he argues that American fat-headedness
is not just confined to the upper echelons of the State Department. From rape
in Okinawa to the imposition of economic austerity in Indonesia (followed by
the quick purchase of its industrial plant on easy terms), Johnson sees the
imperialistic mentality as the defining style of American actions and
expectations abroad. In order to curb imminent and massive blowback, he calls
for a more humble American presenceboth militarily and psychologicallyin the
world. However, one has to wonder about the value of Johnson's dissent: Is
humility a realistic solution to the tangle of issues that this nation has
persistently involved itself in for half a century? Engrossing and at the same
time alarming, Johnson's well-researched book nevertheless presents an easy
solution to fundamental problems that have usually forced great powers into
