xtians who seem to have a stranglehold on what was really going on back in
the garden.

Some say the God created man and woman in His own image on the Sixth Day,
giving them charge over the world, but that Eve did not yet exist. Now, God
had set Adam to name every beast, bird and other living thing. When they
passed before him in pairs, male and female, Adam --being already like a
twenty-year-old man-- felt jealous of their loves, and though he tried
coupling with each female creature in turn, found no satisfaction in the
act. He therefore cried: "Every creature but I has a proper mate!" and
prayed God would remedy this injustice. [1]

God then formed Lilith, the first woman, just as He had formed Adam, except
that he used filth and sediment instead of pure dust. From Adam's union with
this demoness, and with another like her named Naamah, Tubal Cain's sister,
sprang Asmodeus and innumerable demons that still plague mankind. Many
generations later, Lilith and Naamah came to Solomon's judgement seat,
disguised as harlots of Jerusalem. [2]

Adam and Lilith never found peace together, for when he wished to lie with
her, she took offence at the recumbent position he demanded. "Why must I lie
beneath you?" she asked. "I also was made from dust, and am therefore your
equal." Because Adam tried to compel her obedience by force, Lilith, in a
rage, uttered the magic name of God, rose into the air and left him.

Adam complained to God: "I have been deserted by my helpmeet." God at once
sent the angels Senoy, Sansenoy and Semangelof to fetch Lilith back. They
found her beside the Red Sea, a region abounding in lascivious demons, to
whom she bore 'lilim' at the rate of more than one hundred a day. "Return to
Adam without delay," the angels said, "or we will drown you!" Lilith asked:
"How can I return to Adam and live like an honest housewife, after my stay
beside the Red Sea?" "It will be death to refuse!" they answered. "How can I
die," Lilith asked again, "when God has ordered me to take charge of all
newborn children: boys up to the eighth day of life, that of circumcision;
girls up to the twentieth day. None the less, if ever I see your three names
or likenesses displayed in an amulet above a newborn child, I promise to
spare it." To this they agreed; but God punished Lilith by making one
hundred of her demon children perish daily; [3] and if she could not destroy
a human infant, because of the angelic amulet, she would spitefully turn
against her own. [4]

Some say that Lilith ruled as queen in Zmargad, and again in Sheba; and was
the demoness who destroyed Job's sons. [5] Yet she escaped the curse of
death which overtook Adam, since they had parted long before the Fall.
Lilith and Naamah not only strangle infants but also seduce dreaming men,
and one of whom, sleeping alone, may become their victim. [6]

Notes:

[1] Divergences between the Creation myths of Genesis I and II, which allow
Lilith to be presumed as Adam's first mate, result from a careless weaving
together of an early Judean and a late priestly tradition. The older version
contains the rib incident. Lilith typifies the Anath-worshipping Canaanite
women, who were permitted pre-nuptial promiscuity. Time after time the
prophets denounced Israelite women for following Canaanite practices; at
first, apparently, with the priests' approval -- since their habit of
dedicating to God the fees thus earned is expressly forbidden in Deuteronomy
XXIII:18. Lilith's flight to the Red Sea recalls the ancient Hebrew view
that water attracts demons. "Tortured and rebellious demons" also found safe
harbourage in Egypt. Thus Asmodeus, who had strangled Sarah's first six
husbands, fled "to the uttermost parts of Egypt" (Tobit VIII:3), when Tobias
burned the heart and liver of a fish on their wedding night.

[2] Lilith's bargain with the angels has its ritual counterpart in an
apotropaic {1} rite once performed in many Jewish communities. To protect
the newborn child against Lilith --and especially a male, until he could be
permanently safeguarded by circumcision-- a ring was drawn with natron, or
charcoal, on the wall of the birthroom, and inside it were written the
words: "Adam and Eve. Out, Lilith!" Also the names Senoy, Sansenoy and
Semangelof (meanings uncertain) were inscribed on the door. If Lilith
nevertheless succeeded in approaching the child and fondling him, he would
laugh in his sleep. To avert danger, it was held wise to strike the sleeping
child's lips with one finger -- whereupon Lilith would vanish.

[3] 'Lilith' is usually derived from the Babylonian-Assyrian word 'lilitu,'
'a female demon, or wind-spirit' -- one of a triad mentioned in Babylonian
spells. But she appears earlier as 'Lillake' on a 2000 BC Sumerian tablet
from Ur containing the tale of _Gilgamesh and the Willow Tree_. There she is
a demoness

JV Question: At your first State of the World Forum, Zbignew Brezezski said, that the 
New World Order would be established step by step and stone by stone, where are we in 
that process in your assessment?


Gorbachev: I think we are just thinking about the design of that new order. Of course 
we experience in different countries is being accumulated as stones in that New World 
Order. Important to build a new order, we should have the design, we should know how 
to build that bridge. Some people think that the world's future should be for that 
golden .that live in the industrialized countries. The advanced countries would 
take advantages of their psychological advantage but of the new openness of global 
economy. In that way they would multiply their advantages and would be even moreso 
that would create a situation when the world's population would be working for this 
one gold millennium.


Some are saying that the whole world is industrialized in the same way that the 
advanced countries have industrialized. I believe that that would be a utopia. A 
utopia similar to the communist utopia to the communist idea of making people happy 
this way and we know the results of that utopia.


Let us not indulge in another utopia in trying to impose the values of the west on the 
rest of the world. The world is globalizing, it is getting is smaller and smaller, the 
world is more .a single nation may consider any problems without taking account 
what is happening in Russia. But that does not mean that we should steam roll the 
world to one culture, one set of morals. We should steam roll the world to other 
religions, other cultures. I think that we can forgive the people in utopias of the 
past. At that time, people did not have enough knowledge, now that they have this 
knowledge, now that difficult experience of this century, we should not try to 
impose any blueprint for the world. Therefore, I believe that the world should be one 
of unity in diversity and harmonize for security taking account the unique features of 
every nation and country. So the stones will emerge as we come along in this process 
and the design will emerge as part of this process.


Q. What is the model that you see which is successful in the world for the 
nation-states which could be mirrored for the success that we are all looking for?


Gorbachev: I think that the model should be democratic. Democracy of the parliamentary 
kind or presidential democracy. We know that all democracies have flaws and there are 
many that are a lot worse.


Q. How do you see the future of the United nations?

Gorbachev: While still the president of the USSR, and as now I have the position that 
we should do all that we can to make sure while the world is uniting and realizing a 
second wind to the United Nations. This is a time for the UN, even though it was a 
difficult year...the UN was able to accomplish something. In order for it to continue, 
we need some institutions of the UN should be expanded and changed but we need the UN 
structure and we need a Security Council that will reflect the new world. The UN 
should also have better legal opportunities to be influential. I believe that it is a 
mistake as some are saying that the UN is a kind of burden. Those who think the UN is 
useless are politicians of a time-serving kind. Those who think about the future and 
our long-term goals should galvanize the UN and reactive the UN with new mechanisms 
and institutions.






Q. You seem to be in favor of the global economy is it not harming the environment? 
Companies can move to other countries without environmental regulations.


A. To be more precise I am not saying that I support globalization but I accept it as 
a fact and we will have to live with it. The global economy, information...the world 
is globalizing. This is a fact and an objective process. Our task and goal is to 
understand. In order to make sure like things which you have mentioned do not happen, 
TNC's do not act to siphon the resources of the world and they do not take advantage

In Professor Antony Sutton's, Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler, we find
that the money crowd who own the private, illegal, Federal Reserve System,
financed Hitler's rise to power, and also helped him finance his war against
the United States. In talking to pilots who had returned from that war, it
was quite obvious that they resented the fact that they were not allowed to
bomb Henry Ford's plant in Germany, nor were they allowed to bomb Standard
Oil's I.G. Farben chemical giant, or the General Motors plant. Other US
plants making war material to kill American and Canadian soldiers were
afforded the same immunity.

Of interest, also, from Professor Charles Levenson's Vodka Cola, Frank
MacCarthy, personnel manager of Canadian IBM and a bombardier in the Royal
Air Force, dropped his bombs anywhere rather than hit his supposed target,
the IBM factory. P 211.

Major Racey Jordan was stationed in Edmonton, Alberta, charged with
supervising the massive shipments of war material to the Soviet Union. Of
the 11 billion trans-shipped through Edmonton, most of it was atomic
materials. This information can be found in Major Jordan's Diaries.

Further to the strange happenings above, Professor Sutton has given to the
world such insight as: National Suicide - Military Aid To The Soviet Union;
Western Technology and Soviet Economic Development, and, The Best Enemy
Money Can Buy.

And, as if that were not enough to prove that something is rotten in the
state of Denmark, Professor Caroll Quigley's 1348 page, Tragedy and Hope - A
history Of The World In Our Time, provides us with even more information
along the same lines when he reveals Senator William Jenner's talk from the
Senate floor: "This country today is in the hands of a secret inner coterie
which is directed by agents of the Soviet Union. We must cut this whole
cancerous conspiracy out of our government at once. Our only choice is to
impeach President Truman and find out who is the secret invisible government
which has so cleverly led our country down the road to destruction."

Professor Quigley's book also tells us of the Federal Reserve's creation of
money out of nothing and charging interest on something that does not exist.
The exchange of paper for gold relieved the American public of all of their
money and placed the United States into bankruptcy, at a private meeting,
during the pro-Communist Roosevelt's reign.

There is no doubt that the Gorbachev Foundation was able to raise many
millions of tax-free dollars in Federal Reserve notes, giving speeches to
the same people and companies who have been causing, and then financing,
both sides of ever dirty war from the Revolution to the present day. This
treason is written up in hundreds of important, suppressed works - which few
couch potatoes will ever read, for the simple reason that Marx said they
would give the people circuses and games for their distraction. Television
and Marxist Hollywood has filled the bill admirably.

The United States now has a Council on Foreign Relations appointed President
and Skull  Bones man at the helm. He has already appointed several of his
own kind to replace the CFR people who are now leaving. Over three hundred
traitors are still in the present administration. The United states of
America is in BIG TROUBLE.

I am writing to you as a citizen of our planet and someone who beholds
the last remaining superpower.  Can there be any doubt that the United
States plays a major role in guiding our world?  Only a fool could
disregard that fact.  To acknowledge this is a given, even though
American spokesmen are perhaps somewhat overly inclined to press the
point home to the rest of the world.

For while America's role is acknowledged throughout the world, her claim
to hegemony, not to say domination, is not similarly recognized.  For

 Earlier this week, President Clinton issued a formal White House
 proclamation celebrating the first day of Kwanzaa. His announcement
 began with some claptrap about preserving "what we value of our past,"
 and Kwanzaa being a "wonderful example" with its "focus on the values
 that have sustained African-Americans through the centuries."

 Except for the small historical detail that Kwanzaa was invented in
 1966 amidst the madness of the multicultural '60s by a black radical
 stooge of the FBI, Ron Karenga, a.k.a. Dr. Maulana Karenga. Karenga
 was a founder of United Slaves, a violent nationalist rival to the
 Black Panthers and a dupe of the FBI.

 In what was probably ultimately a foolish gamble, during the violent
 '60s, the FBI encouraged the most offensive black nationalist
 organizations in order both to discredit and split the left. The more
 preposterous the organization, the better. Karenga's United Slaves was
 perfect. Despite public perception blending the black activists of the
 '60s, the Black Panthers did not hate whites and did not seek armed
 revolution. That was the trope of Karenga's United Slaves. In the
 annals of the American '60s, Karenga was the Father Gapon, stooge of
 the czarist police.

 Whether Karenga was a willing dupe, or just a dupe, remains unclear.
 Interestingly though, in an 1995 interview with Ethnic NewsWatch,
 Karenga matter-of-factly explained that the forces out to get O.J.
 Simpson for the "framed" murder of two whites included: "the FBI, the
 CIA, the State Department, Interpol, the Chicago Police Department"
 and so on. (He further noted that "the evidence was not strong enough
 to prohibit or eliminate unreasonable doubt" -- an interesting
 standard of proof.) Karenga should know about FBI infiltration.

 Also, in the category of the-gentleman-doth-protest-too-much, back in
 the '70s, Nigerian newspapers were claiming that many American black
 radicals were CIA operatives. Karenga leapt in to denounce the idea
 publicly, saying, "Africans must stop generalizing about the loyalties
 and motives of Afro-Americans, including the widespread suspicion of
 black Americans being CIA agents."

 There is no question now that the FBI fueled the bloody rivalry
 between the Panthers and United Slaves, leading in one outburst to the
 shooting of Panther Al "Bunchy" Carter on the UCLA campus by Karenga's
 United Slaves. Karenga himself served time, a useful stepping-stone
 for his current position as a black studies professor at California
 State University at Long Beach.

 Kwanzaa itself is a lunatic blend of schmaltzy '60s rhetoric, black
 racism and Marxism. Indeed, the seven "principles" of Kwanzaa praise
 collectivism in every possible arena of life -- economics, work,
 personality, even litter removal ("Kuumba: Everyone should strive to
 improve the community and make it more beautiful.") It takes a village
 to raise a police snitch.

 Asked to distinguish Kawaida, the philosophy underlying Kwanzaa, from
 "classical Marxism" in the 1995 interview, Karenga basically said that
 under Kawaida, we also hate whites. While taking the "best of" -- I'm
 not making this up -- "early Chinese and Cuban socialism," Kawaida
 practitioners believe one's racial identity "determines life
 conditions, life-chances and self-understanding." There's a happy
 Horatio Alger story for you.

 Coincidentally, the seven principles of Kwanzaa are the very same
 seven principles of the Symbionese Liberation Army, another charming
 invention of the Least-Great Generation. In 1974, Patricia Hearst,
 kidnap victim-cum-SLA revolutionary, posed next to the banner of her
 alleged captors, a seven-headed cobra. Each snake head stood for one
 of the SLA's revolutionary principles (and this sounds like Saturday
 Night Live's send-up of the second presidential debate in which George
 Bush rattled off an endless series of Nigerian names): Umojo,
 Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba and Imani -- precisely the
 seven "principles" of Kwanzaa.

 With his Kwanzaa greetings, President Clinton is saluting the
 intellectual sibling of the Symbionese Liberation Army, killer of
 housewives and police, and the founder of United Slaves, who were such
 lunatics that they shot Panthers for not being sufficiently violent --
 all with the FBI as their covert ally. It's as if David Duke invented
 a holiday called "Anglica," and the president of the United States
 issued a presidential proclamation honoring the synthetic holiday.
 People might well stand up and take notice if that happened.

 Liberals have become so mesmerized by the hegemonic multicultural
 nonsense that they have forgotten the real history -- the violence,
 the Marxism, the insanity. Most absurdly, for leftists anyway, is that
 they have forgotten the FBI's tacit encouragement of this murderous
 black nationalist cult founded by

[CTRL] Cereal Murders

I was assuming this was a deliberate misspelling in the Hoffmann article as some sort 
of occult parable. However another article posted today to the list, from a newspaper 
I believe, also used the expression 'Cereal Killer'. While it has been the subject of 
many jokes over the years, perhaps the best is Neil Gaiman's run of Sandman where the 
serial killers have a convention in an out of the way hotel called a 'cereal 
convention'.

What's going on here? Is everyone playing a joke on me? Has everyone forgotten what to 
spell?

The news media and political protests

Protests were effective in the 1960s because the news media covered them.
Today media organizations often ignore protest demonstrations.  When TV news
networks do not cover a protest, the demonstration can not move public
opinion.  The various news media organizations serve as the public's eyes and
ears.  When the media fail to report any given event, the public remains
blind and deaf regarding the story.

Most Americans get their news from television.  Day after day during the
1960s, TV news networks showed close-ups of such atrocities as innocent black
children marching into police fire hoses.  Television news people ran Martin
Luther King's speeches and discussed and dissected them.  The American
people's eyes were opened, through the media's lens.

By contrast, during recent post-election protests in Florida, TV networks
kept a distance from Jesse Jackson and other like-minded demonstrators.  Few
networks aired Jackson's speeches in their entirety.  Television news
commentators did not explain and clarify the protesters' grievances or give
them sympathetic coverage.  Fox Network's Bill O'Reilly and many other
commentators frequently maligned Jackson as a troublemaker.

During last year's Seattle protests of the World Trade Organization, TV
networks also kept a distance from the demonstrators.  Commentators on MSNBC
and other cable news talk shows said repeatedly that they did not understand
why people were demonstrating.  They often said that the protests seemed to
be a hodgepodge of vague and cranky quibbles and implied it would be
impossible to grasp the details of the complaints.

No wonder the commentators did not understand.  They simply never asked.  Few
TV networks conducted any in-depth interviews with spokesmen for the
protesters.  The networks did not often show close-ups of peaceful protesters
being tear gassed or shot with rubber bullets -- incidents widely reported on
the Internet and in alternative news publications.

In the same way, TV networks gave little coverage to Jesse Jackson's recent
complaint that a mob of hired Republicans used violent tactics to try to
break up a peaceful post-election demonstration in Florida.  If the networks
had spent adequate time examining that information, the public would better
understand the reasons for Jackson's protests.

During the 1960s, public opinion shifted when the media showed the people the
truth about antiwar and civil rights demonstrations -- especially when the
media explained the reasons behind the marches and sit ins.  Once public
opinion changed, the people urged legislators to take action.

Because the following example from history is a useful illustration of (1)
the media's impact on public opinion, and (2) the importance of having a
fully informed public, it will help to digress and explore it at some length:


Deborah Lipstadt researched the behavior of the American press during the
coming of the Holocaust in BEYOND BELIEF (The Free Press, Macmillan, Inc.,
1986.)  Lipstadt says, "During the 1930s and 1940s America could have saved
thousands and maybe even hundreds of thousands of Jews but did not do so."

Lipstadt points out that the U. S. was slow to recognize the Nazi threat to
the Jewish people and asks what might have been done to initiate rescue
operations sooner.  She quotes Adlai Stevenson:  "I believe that in
ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, the American people will make the right
decision -- if and when they are in possession of the essential facts about
any given issue."

The problem was, during the early Holocaust years, the American news media
did not present "the essential facts" to the public in a timely way.
Washington might have acted sooner to assist the Jews, says Lipstadt, if the
American public had known -- via the media -- what was going on and then
urged politicians to act.

The U. S. press treated Hitler's early antisemitism and persecution of the
Jewish people as "sidebar" news stories.  Although Hitler's Final Solution
was known to the media by 1942, the press did not fully convey the fact to
the American public.

Deborah Lipstadt points out that in The Washington Post, March, 1943, William
Shirer criticized the public for thinking that reports of Hitler's atrocities
were only propaganda.  Lipstadt also mentions that in January, 1944, Arthur
Koestler cited U. S. public opinion polls showing that nine out of ten
Americans believed that reports of a Nazi threat were propaganda lies.
(Arthur Koestler, New York Times Magazine, January 9, 1944.)

Lipstadt notes that the Christian Century (February 16, 1944) said in
response to Koestler that there was no use "screaming" about atrocities
against the Jews, claiming it would only "emotionally exhaust" those who
wanted to use their energies to build peace after the war.

Could the media have been quicker to report the truth about Hitler in a way
that the American public understood?  What

Stealing an Election
by Joseph Sobran

Both the major parties have been accusing each
other of trying to "steal" the presidential
election in Florida. But this mess is a clean
process indeed compared to one that occurred
in Maryland in 1861.

In May 1861 the Civil War was already raging.
President Abraham Lincoln called on Maryland
to send four regiments to fight for the Union
cause. But the state was bitterly divided over
the war.

Most Marylanders didn't want their state to
secede, but neither did they favor war. It is
widely forgotten that a large body of American
opinion held that the Confederate States had
every right to secede from the Union and
thought they should be allowed to go in peace.
But to Lincoln, this view was "treason." By
Lincoln's definition, most Americans, not just
Southerners, probably qualified as traitors.

The Maryland state legislature replied to
Lincoln's summons for troops with a resolution
condemning the war as "unconstitutional and
repugnant to civilization," adding that "for
the sake of humanity we are for peace and
reconciliation, and solemnly protest against
this war, and will take no part in it." The
legislature also called "the present military
occupation of Maryland" a "flagrant violation
of the Constitution."

Lincoln was infuriated. He sent informers to
determine which members of the legislature
were "disloyal"  i.e., opposed to war. On
the night of September 12 he had federal
troops arrest dozens of legislators and other
prominent citizens (including the mayor of
Baltimore and a Maryland congressman) he
suspected of Southern sympathies. Since
Lincoln had also suspended the right of
habeas corpus, he claimed the power to arrest
anyone arbitrarily, without specific charges
and without a trial. When the chief justice
of the United States, Roger Taney, had ruled
that Lincoln had no constitutional power to
do this, Lincoln had not only ignored the
ruling but ordered Taney's arrest too! (If he
had gone through with this outrage, he might
well have been impeached and removed from
office.)

Having depleted the Maryland legislature,
Lincoln moved to refill it with reliable
Unionists. He stationed thousands of federal
troops in the state and used them to crush
dissent. As the historian Charles Adams writes
in his book When in the Course of Human Events
(Lanham, Maryland: Rowman  Littlefield, 2000):
"In November there was an election, and to make
sure only Union people were elected, all members
of the Federal armed forces voted, even though
they were not residents of the state. At the
voting booths, other voters had to pass through
platoons of Union soldiers who had bayonets
affixed to their rifles." Southern sympathizers
attempting to vote were arrested.

By such means Lincoln got the legislature he
wanted. "Democratic government ceased in Maryland
for the duration of the war," Adams notes. So
much for "government of the people, by the
people, for the people," which, you'll recall,
would "perish from the earth" if the Union lost.
Lincoln's devotion to his avowed principles may
be measured by such practices, which showed the
cynicism behind his gorgeous rhetoric.

The legend of Lincoln's humanitarianism and love
of freedom will not withstand an examination of
his brutal wartime tactics, which shocked
civilized Europe. The cruelty of the Union armies
as they invaded the South is well known. What is
less well known is how the Union terrorized itself.

Across the North Lincoln authorized tens of
thousands of arbitrary arrests and shut down
hundreds of newspapers for criticizing his war.
His military governors sometimes ordered hangings,
without trial, for minor offenses. Mere suspicion
of disloyalty  very broadly defined  was enough
to expose the individual to danger from his own
government. It was a genuine reign of terror, an
era of government by hysteria. The Constitution
was effectively suspended.

Defenders of Lincoln and the Union cause contend
that the Constitution doesn 't authorize states to
secede. Actually, the Constitution says nothing
about secession; it doesn't authorize it, and it
doesn't forbid it.

But neither does the Constitution authorize its
own abrogation for the purpose of resisting
secession. It remains binding on the federal
government, including the president, at all
times, even during war and insurrection.

Lincoln argued in effect that the Constitution
could be saved only if he could violate it. It
was, and remains, a shabby argument; but it was,
and remains, successful propaganda.

BLINDED BY THE BOOM:
What's Missing in the Coverage of the New Economy?

 The latest and largest generation of business reporters has
come of age under economic conditions far different from those that shaped
their immediate predecessors. The crises that forced business news onto the
front page from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s -- oil shocks,
de-industrialization, insider trading, the 1987 crash, massive budget and
trade deficits, the savings and loan fiasco, downsizing -- are about as
relevant now as yellowed clips in a file folder. (Though an oil shock is
auditioning for a revival.)

It's the new economy, stupid. Fortunes are being made in high-
and bio-tech. Productivity is soaring. The stock market is off the
historical charts. Unemployment is low and minorities, women, and some inner
cities are benefiting in ways that haven't been seen for generations.

The boom has its echo in financial reporting. Not only is there
a great deal more of it, but reporters have gravitated to what is obviously
the biggest story of the day: the stock market explosion and what pundits
and political candidates are (incorrectly) calling this unprecedented era of
economic growth. High technology, market coverage, and personal finance
dominate the news holes and time slots reserved for business and economics
news.

Some hyperbole has spilled over into the reportage. Coverage of
the current prosperity can read like a sports page when the home team is on
a roll: cheerleading can drown out the occasional story pointing out
weaknesses in the squad or the challenges coming up in the schedule.
Journalistic scorn is reserved for the players -- or in this case stocks --
that don't make their numbers.

But with the election behind us, it's time for the media to take
a deeper look. It's not as if we haven't shined some light on the economy's
darker corners. We have. But a series of interviews with top editors at news
organizations and an informal search of Lexis-Nexis has confirmed my own
recent experience as a business and economics journalist: the press has
largely abandoned sustained coverage of pressing economic problems in favor
of the occasional piece that temporarily highlights an issue.

This approach is unlikely to disturb many readers or move many
politicians. The new administration will either tackle the nation's
unfinished economic business or allow it to fester. If the media turn a
brighter light on those who are missing out on the good times, it's more
likely that the decisions made will be better informed.

WHO GETS HEARD

One way to gauge media coverage of economic problems is to
listen to complaints about the press from both sides of the ideological
divide, since both left and right tend to put economic issues near the top
of their agendas. For years critics on the right flailed the media for an
antagonistic attitude toward business, claiming that inaccurate and
inflammatory stories about either the economy or corporate wrongdoing had
led to excessive regulation. That, in turn, they said, hampered the U.S.
business community's ability to compete. Some on the right still make such
complaints.

But these days it's the other side -- including the Green Party
candidate Ralph Nader and his ideological allies -- that is doing the most
screaming. "Twenty years ago you had high-profile cases that gave the
impression that the media had a vendetta against big business," says Richard
Kaplar, vice president of the Media Institute, a conservative communications
policy think tank, and a contributor to publications from the libertarian
Cato Institute. "It's definitely different today, a completely different
environment."

The liberal press watchdog, Fairness  Accuracy In Reporting,
agrees. Journalists are overly proud of the single stories they do on issues
like the problems of low-wage workers, says Seth Ackerman, who monitors
economics coverage for FAIR. "But the bulk of the reporters like to
gravitate to the big story, which is the new economy, the booming economy."

FAIR commissioned a study of journalistic attitudes at the
nation's leading media outlets, including all the top papers and the
television networks. Some results from the 1998 survey: 71 percent of the
141 capital correspondents and bureau chiefs polled by David Croteau of
Virginia Commonwealth University supported fast-track trade negotiating
authority for the president, a hot issue at the time. Concurrent newspaper
polls of the general public showed just the opposite: 56 percent were
opposed. It went down to defeat. On

Why do so many people think there are no ties between the Bush and
Clinton camps? Didn't anyone think it was strange that our 41st president
was meeting world leaders after he was out of office and Clinton was in?
According to Joel Bainerman in his book Crimes of a President, supporters of
Bush Sr. including the Bush 100, were also heavy contributors to Clinton's
1990 Arkansas campaign.

Contrast that to how little credit or mention either former
President Bush or President-elect Bush has ever given to Rush Limbaugh's
hero, Ronald Reagan. But they loved Nixon, who made Bush Sr. the national
contender he would never have otherwise been.

No kidding!  Look at the changes in FCC regulations over the last 30
years.  Look at the death of independent broadcasting.  All the media( in

even fewer radio stations, all the media in the U.S. is Corporate
owned...as are all the politicians.  TV has the biggest impact on the
people, and is the most tightly held by Corporate America.  Why do you
think the government (by proxy, it is really Corporate America who is
pulling the strings) is so insistant on 'controlling' the internet and
email.  Once the government gets control of the internet and email, all
hope for change is gone.  The attacks are coming from all angles; safety
of our children from porn, safety of our children from meeting strangers,
national security, anti terrorism, general police investigations
necessity.  So far, they have not gained legal control.

Doubtfull that they are that organized.  Probably more an unfamiliarity
with colloquial American idiom.  To me it sounds like an ad for some of
the quirkier Fundamentalist Christian Groups. Polygamy is replaced by
Group activities.  Mothers encouraged to offer up their daughters for the
"teaching" by their leader.  Homeschooling to brainwash the young with
out the confusion of public education.  Creating a New Nation of People
by breeding programs.  Of course they don't want other men to join,
better not have anyone who could be a direct comparison to whoever their
"Leader" is.  I would bet that the only men allowed are thoroughly
screened to insure they do not rival the "Headman" in any way.

[Forgive me for being unduly skeptical (paranoid?), but this article by Timothy Jones 
has some disturbing subcontext to me, including the presumption that the "mass 
hysterias" of the last 600 years had no other explanation (and there are actually a 
number of "real" possibilities).  While coming across as studied, scientific and 
caring, there is a consistent agenda being promoted which smacks of control based on 
psychology -- both the presumed hysteria as well as the message here.  There are 
several references to possible bioterrorism.
Granted that beliefs are a factor in society, just whose beliefs are being inculcated?

Further, as the propaganda about AIDS has to mutate due to failing paradigms, we may 
see more explanations along this line.  I am not pointing a finger at the person who 
reported this article to the rethinkingaids list, but rather the assumptions which are 
implicit behind state-dictated views and the possible misuse when problems surface.

The following article appeared in the most recent edition of the primary journal for 
family practicioners, called the "American Family Physician".  It is the official 
journal for the American Academy of Family Practice.

The article is about a phenomenon called "mass psychogenic illness" or "epidemic 
hysteria".  For those of you who don't already know, I wrote a paper for med school 
about how stress, negative beliefs, and social isolation can cause illnesses and 
immune suppression that look exactly like the symptoms of AIDS.  This paper got very 
very long and is more like a book, which I entitled "AIDS and the Voodoo Hex".

Simply put, "mass psychogenic illnesses" are epidemics that are spread through the 
power of suggestion/belief.  These are actually quite common and have been occuring at 
least since the 13th century.

The article below does not mention AIDS.  The circumstances and social pressures that 
can lead to such an outbreak, however, sound a lot like the circumstances surrounding 
gay men in the early 1980's when the whole thing started.

- "Mass psychogenic illness is characterized by symptoms, occurring among a group of 
persons with shared beliefs regarding those symptoms, that suggest organic illness but 
have no identifiable environmental cause..."(the shared beliefs at the time were that 
there was an infectious plague spreading among gay men "the gay plague")

stress, experiencing a societal backlash with the high profile repealing of gay rights 
in Florida and the assassination of Harvey Milk, the first elected official in the 
U.S.  who was openly gay.  They were also young and coming into their identity as 
adolescents do, and were expressing their female side.)

- "They may be aggravated by a prominent emergency or media response." (this requires 
no comment...)

When combined with a detailed analysis of voodoo hexing and other examples of how 
beliefs can affect people's lives, as many have done, including me, it becomes 
apparent that these could explain much of the illness that follows an HIV+ diagnosis.

have no identifiable environmental cause and little clinical or laboratory evidence of 
disease.  Mass psychogenic illness typically affects adolescents or children, groups 
under stress and females disproportionately more than males.  Symptoms often follow an 
environmental trigger or illness in an index case.  They can spread rapidly by 
apparent visual transmission, may be aggravated by a prominent emergency or media 
response, and frequently resolve after patients are separated from each other and

STARVING North Koreans are reverting to cannibalism to survive,
while farmers have been ordered to grow opium for state-endorsed
overseas sale, a maker of television documentaries has claimed.
Carla Garapedian, producer of Children of the Secret State, a BBC-
Channel 4 co-production, said film smuggled out of North Korea,
and interviews with refugees escaping the communist state,
revealed "acts of unspeakable barbarism not seen since Pol Pot's
Cambodia".

"(The) footage is shocking. Starving children abandoned by the
state. Orphans thrown into state asylums and left to die,"
Garapedian wrote in an opinion article run this week in Japan's
Daily Yomiuri newspaper.

Worse, she said, were the drawings of 15-year-old Jang Gil-su,
who with his family fled North Korea into China and has, while still
in hiding, been recording his experiences of everyday life in his
former country, where millions of people are understood to have
starved to death.

The pictures, given to Garapedian by a refugee support group in
Seoul, depict families eating pine bark, rats, snakes and anything
else to stay alive. One shows a man at a market stall, with Jang
captioning it "Man selling human flesh (saram hoki) at a farmers'
market in Hoeroung city".

"All of the North Koreans we interviewed knew about it. Jang's
picture of a dismembered child in a cooking pot says more than
any of the numbing statistics," Garapedian wrote.

Independent verification of the practice is difficult  because
Hoeroung city is impossible to visit or contact in the secretive
country.

"You eat it without knowing it is human flesh. You're so hungry you
just eat it," she quotes one orphan as saying, claiming more than
200,000 orphans are starving in North Korea, despite the country
receiving the second-most food aid in the world.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, desperate to garner more
international aid with a freezing winter in full swing, is trying to open
up his mysterious country to the outside world.

Australia was one of the first nations to reintroduce diplomatic
relations with North Korea early last year. Since then, many
nations have taken steps to follow suit, including Italy, Germany
and Britain.

Garapedian said she had spoken to farmers who claimed to have
been barred from growing food and instead ordered to grow opium.
"The opium would then be processed by the state into heroin and
then sold abroad. The proceeds would go to arm the military," she
wrote.

North Korean officials could not be contacted for comment
yesterday.

The parliamentary elections in Serbia gave forth 
the convincing victory of DOS, which won 176 out of 250 seats in the National 
Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. However, after 'coming to the streets', one 
realizes that the DOS victory is, actually, far from convincing - only 58% of 
the voters cast their votes, which means that DOS will be ruling Serbia after 
winning the mere 1/3 of the total number of eligible votes. As for the voting 
process itself, it should be said that none of the political parties, nor any of 
the many foreign observers, had any serious objections, and one might draw an 
off-hand conclusion, that the elections were both regular and 
peaceful.

The truth is quite different, though. The events in 
the past three months, and during the "election silence" in particular, were 
anything but regular! Namely, never in the past ten-odd years since the 
renewal of the parliamentary life in Serbia, the media have played such a 
perfidious and shameful role, favoring one side (this time, the DOS), and 
satanizing their political opponents. 

Never during the past ten years' (and, possibly, 
during even a much longer) period, has appeared in this region a political 
organization, based on the abuse of minors for political purposes, and wrapped 
in a seemingly benign, teenage-intellectual wrapping foil, such as the one named 
OTPOR. Accidentally or not, by their own will, and/or by the will of the experts 
for the subversive- and propaganda war from the western centers of political 
power, the OTPOR through its pre-election, Orwellian, media presentation, played 
possibly the crucial role in the intimidation of the followers of SPS (the 
Socialist Party of Serbia) and of the other political groups outside DOS, 
preventing them to freely express their political notions in the 23rd October 
voting. 

The role of the so-called "independent media", 
actually the strictly controlled printed and electronic propaganda machine of 
DOS, in the election campaign was three-fold. Firstly, to defame the former 
authorities, using all the moral and (predominantly) immoral means, and 
half-truths (or, half-lies). Secondly, to obscure, or rather to push into 
oblivion, the last year's NATO aggression, while the NATO leaders, the war 
criminals and the chief political and financial sponsors of the DOS campaign, 
should not be just absolved for their war crimes, but even, if possible, 
projected as the "victims" of the former "non-democratic regime", while the 
aggression should be represented as the "necessary evil" which, simply, was 
inevitable under "such a regime". And thirdly, the victory of DOS at the 
parliamentary elections in Serbia should be trumpeted daily as a 
"self-explanatory" fact, since otherwise even the Sun would stop shining, while 
all the Serbs would be turned by the "civilized and democratic West" into 
grasshoppers, or some other pests, and pedantically sprayed by DDT every day, 
from airplanes...

After all that has come to us from the West in the 
past ten-odd years, indeed, our average informed- and educated, but 
above-average tormented, fellow countrymen were not hard to convince that even 
such a DDT option is realistic.

I wonder, how one might not believe our media, when 
even the recent DOS co-minister (the term "co-minister" has not yet been 
deciphered!) Ms. Biserka Matic, has coolly said that all the media in Serbia are 
free, "except several of them, that have recently been launched by the 
Socialists"(!??). 

Such demagoguery surpasses even the old "Brozian" 
one, which the actual holders of the federal and republic authority ostensibly 
disdain, while it conspiciously sticks out from their, de-moth-balled "communist 
overcoat"?

As for the technology of vote casting, this time it 
was enriched by two novelties: the control lamps, and the invisible dye sprays. 


O. K. We may disregard the fact that voting like 
this one has not been seen anywhere, at least not in the Western Europe and in 
the United States, only in the Republic of Srpska; we may disregard also the 
fact that by such "marking", the voters actually were branded, if not like 
cattle than for sure as "suspicious individuals" with a tendency towards thefts 
and other kinds of criminal behaviors; finally, we may also disregard the fact 
that nobody bothered to ask the citizens of Serbia whether they really wish to 
be lighted by violet-colored lamps, like monkeys in the cage in a zoo, and 
sprayed by the "invisible dye" like scabby dogs and cats? Yet, we must ask those 
who, on our behalf, agreed to such a "circus", whether such mockery was really 
introduced just to prevent any individuals to vote twice (which nobody in Serbia 
has ever intended to, anyway)? Or, more likely, the well-known international 
company that produces flashlights, torches etc., has been encountering financial 
difficulties lately, and

These are the primary weapons of war in a brewing conflict that is
transforming the Internet into an electronic battleground. As hostilities
escalate in the Middle East, pro-Israeli activists are fighting a rear-guard
action against a pan-Arab confederation of hackers determined to unleash an
"e-jihad" against the Jewish homeland.
The sheer intensity of the Muslim assault is staggering. According to
idefense, a security firm tracking the unfolding cyber-battle, some 90
security breaches are being attributed to Islamic hackers. These attacks
include "denial of service attacks, attempts to gain root access, system
penetrations, defacements and a variety of other attacks" (press release,
November 21st, 2000). These high-profile hits include Web sites for the
Israeli Foreign Ministry, the Bank of Israel, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange,
the Israel Defense Force (IDF) and others.

When a small cadre of Israeli loyalists set up a Web site, in early October
2000, to conduct a pre-emptive propaganda strike against the Web pages of
Hizbollah and other pro-Palestinian groups, they ignited a cyber-intifada.

After an effective bombardment shut down six sites including Hamas.org, a
furious Arab counterattack sent several Israeli government sites offline.
Two months later, the campaign reached global proportions, with supporters
aligned on both sides mounting attacks from Israel, Palestine, Egypt,
Brazil, the U.K., the U.S. and other locales.

Spearheading the pro-Palestinian offensive are opposition groups such as
Gforce Pakistan, Xegypt, and Unity. The latter, which enjoy ties with the
hard line Hizbollah faction, are vowing to escalate their harassment of
Israeli sites by launching a multifaceted "cyberjihad" designed to paralyze
the Jewish state's internal operations and online economy by repeatedly
targeting government, telecommunications and e-commerce sites.

Stepping into the breach to defend their beloved homeland are the Internet
Israeli Underground (IIU) which stands "united to protect Israel on the
Internet against any kind of attack from vicious hacking groups." The
nationalistic hackers will certainly face a formidable opposition. Web sites
are going up across the net in order to provide easily accessible attack
tools to the hard-charging Islamic forces. EvilPing, which launches a "ping
of death" attack capable of quickly shutting down a system and "QuickFire,"
capable of sending 32,000 e-mails to a selected target are but two examples
of the devastating arsenal wielded by Palestine sympathizers.

IIU spokesmen told Wired magazine reporter Carmen Gentile that the
unrelenting attacks have become so prevalent, they may have caused an 8%
drop in the Israeli Stock Exchange.

Amidst the chaos of this brewing conflict, Western observers fear that
America will soon become embroiled in this volatile dispute. When the Web
site for New Jersey-based Lucent Technology came under attack, in November
2000, allegedly in retaliation for the security firm's business dealings
Israel, these fears came close to being realized. Ben Venzke, Director of
Intelligence Production for idefense was quick to point out the significance
of this portentous development.

"There could be other organizations hit here in the US but this is the first
US corporation named directly on target lists being circulated by
pro-Palestinian hacker groups I've seen so far," he remarked to Erica
Luening of CNET (November 2nd, 2000). This could be disastrous in light of a
disconcerting Computer World article which deems the nation's security
precautions are woefully "inadequate" (November 13th, 2000).

As security experts prepare for a wave of possible attacks, we may be
glimpsing the future of postmodern warfare. Perhaps entire battles will be
decided within the limitless realm of cyberspace with skilled hackers
jamming communications, shutting down power grids and freezing bank
accounts. Although the Internet is frequently lauded as a unifying medium
capable of bringing us closer together, this online religious war
exemplifies its malign potential.

a massive military presence in that strategic spot. It needs to threaten
Venezuela where we get 25% ( OR LESS )   OF OUR OIL, and which has every
intention of being an independent country and not a puppet of America' oil
business. The CIA recently achieved a bloodless coup in Peru with the expulsion
of Fujimori, an ex-puppet who criticized Plan Columbia. And last but not at
all least, it is a military staging are for ANYBODY who might prevent the Navy
from using the Panama Canal. Especially Panama.

0002.  Falcons hold on to beat Fresno State in football duel

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- After blasting off early, the Air Force Academy barely
avoided crashing and burning New Year's Eve, surviving a Fresno State
comeback to win the inaugural Silicon Valley Football Classic, 37-34.

After scoring 27 unanswered second-half points and with 14 seconds left,
Fresno State opted to go for the win and not the tie.  The Bulldogs faked a
field goal, but holder Jason Simpson's pass sailed over the head of
wide-open receiver Giachino Chiaramonte.  The errant pass was a prayer
answered for the Falcons.

"I was positive they would go for the tie," said Falcon head coach Fisher
DeBerry.  "Plays like that are what will make me a feeble old man quick!"

The fake was a play the Bulldogs designed just for Air Force.

"We practiced it for two weeks," said Fresno State coach Pat Hill.  "I have
no second thoughts about it.  We just came up short."

The Silicon Classic was a tale of two halves.

The Falcons dominated Fresno State in the first half, racking up 34 points
and 319 yards.  The team scored on its first five possessions and broke or
tied five school records in the process.

"We came out ready to play and caught them off guard," said senior
quarterback Mike Thiessen.

Air Force entered the game with the third best rushing game in the country,
but it was its air attack that kept the Bulldogs reeling.  Thiessen
connected twice with halfback Scotty McKay for scores and ran for two
touchdowns.

Tough defense and a near flawless offensive performance put the Falcons on
the way to a rout.  Or so it looked.

"Air Force really put it on us," Hill said.  "We were like a dazed fighter
that got caught with a good right hand."

But instead of rolling over, the Bulldogs shut the Falcons down.  Fresno
State, a team known for its quick strike offense, managed just 130 passing
yards in the first half.  In contrast, however, it's sputtering offense
started to click in the second half.  Junior quarterback David Carr caught
fire for the Bulldogs and threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns in the
second half.

"They were just a different team in the second half," said Thiessen.  "They
came out fired up and we let up a bit."

When the tide changed, it also kicked in another important factor in the
game -- the crowd, DeBerry said.  With Fresno just a two-hour drive from San
Jose, the Bulldogs brought more than 16,000 fans with them -- the Red Wave.

The crowd was more like a pink ripple early in the game, but when the "dogs"
picked up the intensity so did the crowd.

"They were fueled by their fans and it made it hard on us," said DeBerry,
the winningest coach in Falcon history.

The win brought DeBerry's bowl record to 6-5 and the Falcons overall bowl
record to 8-7-1.  It also capped a 9-3 season for the Falcon's that the team
wrapped up with a four-game winning streak.

The game's offensive Most Valuable Player was Falcon quarterback Mike
Thiessen.  In his final game for the Air Force Academy, Thiessen ran for 99
yards and two touchdowns and threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns.  He was
one rushing yard shy of becoming the first Falcon to run for 100 yards and
pass for 200 in a game.

The game's defensive MVP was Fresno State linebacker Tim Skipper.  Skipper
led the Bulldog's defense with 16 tackles and was key to Fresno State
stifling the Falcons in the second half.

Special teams MVP was Falcon kicker Dave Adams.  Adams kicked three field
goals and two points after touchdown.  His 46-yard field goal in the first
quarter tied an Air Force bowl game record set in the 1990 Liberty Bowl, and
his third-quarter field goal proved to be the game winner.



0001.  Rumsfeld tapped to lead Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- President-elect George W. Bush has nominated Donald H.
Rumsfeld as defense secretary.

If confirmed by the Senate this will be Rumsfeld's second tour at the
Pentagon.  He was secretary in 1975 to 1977 during the Ford Administration.

Rumsfeld, 68, would succeed William S. Cohen.

"He's going to be a great secretary of defense -- again," said Bush during
the announcement Dec. 28.

Bush said he wants to restructure the department to make forces more mobile.
During the campaign, Bush said he would look into skipping generations of
military hardware to ensure U.S. forces have the best weaponry.  Bush also
reiterated that he would add $1 billion to the budget for a higher military
pay raise.

BP: Beyond Preposterous

--- British Petroleum's recent ad campaign with the theme of "Beyond Petroleum," led us to think about more appropriate phrases for the company's re-branding: British Petroleum: Beyond Pompous, Beyond Protest, Beyond Pretension, Beyond Preposterous, Beyond Platitudes, Beyond Posturing, Beyond Presumptuous, Beyond Propaganda... Beyond Belief. Recently BP, the world's second largest oil company and one of the world's largest corporations, advertised its new identity as a leader in moving the world "Beyond Petroleum." Such leadership would benefit the world's climate and many of its communities immensely, according to British Petroleum. Sound too good to be true? Let's see. BP says Beyond Petroleum means "being a global leader in producing the cleanest burning fossil fuel: Natural Gas." It's true that natural gas is not petroleum, but is it true that gas is a radica!
l improvement over oil for our climate? In theory, natural gas emits somewhat less carbon dioxide than oil for the same energy produced. But when fugitive emissions, or leaks, are counted, the difference is slim to none. For the climate, natural gas is at best an incremental improvement over oil, and at worst a distraction from the real challenge of moving our societies away from fossil fuels. That challenge is what is meant by "moving beyond petroleum" when used by environmental groups. Rainforest Action Network, for example, says their Beyond Oil campaign works to "move our societies out of our devastating dependence on fossil fuels and into renewable energy options..." BP's re-branding as the "Beyond Petroleum" company is perhaps the ultimate co-optation of environmentalists' language and message. Even apart from the twisting of language, BP's suggestion that producing more natural gas is somehow akin to global leadership !
is preposterous. Make that Beyond Preposterous. BP's claim to be "the largest producer of solar energy in the world" is a little more serious. But being #1 for BP is so easy. It was achieved by spending $45 million to buy the Solarex solar energy corporation. That's a tiny fraction of the $26.5 billion it spent to buy ARCO in order to increase BP's production capacity for...oil. BP will spend $5 billion over five years for oil exploration in Alaska alone. And, according to one group of BP shareholders, BP spent more on their new eco-friendly logo last year than on renewable energy. When a company spends more on advertising its environmental friendliness than on environmental actions, that's greenwash. Speaking of greenwash, BP's Herald Tribune ad (pictured here) is a bizarre classic of the genre. It is difficult to guess what their ad firm was trying to convey with the picture of partially submerged trees. Perhaps its just an unu!
sual nature photo, or perhaps its meant to remind us of the frightening potential for rising sea levels and flooding from global warming. Or perhaps it's a Freudian slip, an unintentional reminder that BP's massive fossil fuel production is responsible for a substantial portion of global carbon emissions, and therefore, climate change. The ambiguity continues with the copy, "...starting a journey that will take the world's expectations of energy beyond what anyone can see today." Pretentious stuff for a company serving mainly oil and gas, with just a sliver of solar on the side. Make that Beyond Pretentious. Take command of the dimensions of communication, goes today's wisdom, and you control your country's security. If Echelon, the code name for an automated global surveillance operation, is all it is cracked up to be, then why didn't that high-tech eavesdropping system receive and issue a warning about the imminent attack on the USS Cole and if it did, why was it ignored?
 
ACQUISITION  COLLECTION
 
One can't discuss the extent or limits of Echelon without taking into account its fountainhead, The National Security Agency (NSA), irreverently known as the "Puzzle Palace" or "No Such Agency", based in Fort Meade, Maryland. NSA and Echelon can almost be considered one and the same; each needs the other to operate efficiently.
 
NSA/Echelon's global technological reach embodies:

1.Undercover embassy listening posts to pick up local message traffic.
2. Military intelligence assets.
3. Cars, trucks, vans and, often disguised as local utility vehicles, to blend into surroundings when used as listening posts.
4. Covert miniature sensors near sources of communications, (used to assist in difficulties with fiber-optic transmissions).
5. Various furtive devices that intercept Internet transmissions. 6. Overt listening posts studded with antennas, outsize dish receivers and space-based satellites that can listen in on international phone, fax, microwave communications and other complex traffic. 



While NSA's banks of supercomputers can probably break many codes in a matter of seconds, by using what is called the "Brute force attack", they do have difficulty with encryption programs with keys of 128 bits or more. In such cases, there are several options, the most uncouth being to steal or bribe the code key; a more elegant method is to covertly modify the foreign encryption machine to one's advantage, or else code breakers can try and find slight mathematical weaknesses in the key. NSA genuinely had problems with certain voice communication, essentially because of pronunciation variables; the computers have trouble recognizing cue words. Advanced computers, capable of improved speech recognition, have done a lot to alleviate that problem.
Multisyllabic key words are easier for the computer to spot than monosyllabic ones because they are less likely to be mixed up with another word. Today's sophisticated word-recognition programs can digitally register keywords, but they can't make reliable transcripts of a conversation because words in conversations so often merge into one another and the computer can't untangle the message.
 
To determine just how much intelligence collection by NSA is enough is a pretty subjective matter. A great deal of material is simply taped and stored in data bases. Some of it might prove useful in years to come, but most of it will remain worthless and unusable. Despite exaggerated stories to the contrary, Echelon does not intercept and monitor millions of communications worldwide; there is no way they could deal with all that data. Echelon is a much more selective and focused search engine than that, targeting especially criminals, terrorists and other suspected enemy traffic. Most intercepts are rejected before they are even seen or interpreted by humans. Echelon uses "Dictionary" computers to scan input and discard what is superfluous and valueless. They even have a portable model, brief case size, called "Oratory", that can be taken around to foreign surveillance sites. NSA is now perfecting a new technique called "topic analysis" which they hope will further help to harvest information on precise subjects.
 
TERRORIST COUNTER MEASURES
 
Any terrorist worth his semtex knows the value and risks of modern communications. The weakness of government authority, because of privacy protection and confusions of jurisdiction within computer nets, works to the terrorist's advantage. They know full well that an analogue portable phone can be listened in by anyone, and that they are, in effect, miniature transmitters that can double as covert listening devices and location finders. Terrorist cells have access to the most sophisticated, up-to-date digital communication equipment and they make use of it. A classic example would be a product of Phonak Communications AG, a Swiss company making state-of-the-art communication equipment. One of their more recent devices is called "Phonito" a new generation of wireless, discreet, invisible two-way communication apparatus that converts any received speech signals into an inductive signal, which can be received by an inductor hidden in one's ear and is said to be impossible to monitor. Such an example is characteristic of the burgeoning problems facing NSA, whose operating costs amount to about $1 million per hour, totaling over $8 billion a year, and an illustration of its difficulty to adapt to the constantly evolving technological

Clinton OKs War Crimes Court Entry

WASHINGTON (AP) - Acting at the last moment, President Clinton on
Sunday authorized the United States to sign a treaty creating the
world's first permanent international war crimes tribunal to bring to
justice people accused of crimes against humanity.

The president said his action, taken with some reservations, builds
on U.S. support for justice and individual accountability dating to
American involvement in the Nuremberg tribunals that brought Nazi war
criminals to justice after World War II. ``Our action today sustains
that tradition of moral leadership,'' he said.

The treaty should not be submitted to the Senate for ratification
until certain concerns are met, he said.

``I believe that a properly constituted and structured International
Criminal Court would make a profound contribution in deterring
egregious human rights abuses worldwide...,'' the president said in a
statement issued at the White House.

The treaty must be ratified by the Senate before U.S. participation
in the tribunal becomes final. Fierce opposition to its terms is
expected from conservatives led by Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C.

The president said he acted ``to reaffirm our strong support for
international accountability and for bringing to justice perpetrators
of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.''

``In signing, however, we are not abandoning our concerns about
significant flaws in the treaty,'' the president said. ``In
particular, we are concerned that when the court comes into
existence, it will not only exercise authority over personnel of
states that have ratified the treaty, but also claim jurisdiction
over personnel of states that have not.''

``Given these concerns, I will not and do not recommend that my
successor submit the treaty to the Senate (for ratification) until
our fundamental concerns are satisfied,'' he said.

Clinton acted at Camp David, the presidential retreat in western
Maryland where he and his family are spending the last New Year's
weekend of his administration.

Sunday was the deadline for countries to sign on to the international
criminal court treaty and transmit it to United Nations headquarters
in New York. After Sunday, ratification is the only way a government
can express support for the treaty or associate itself with it.

The court would be the first permanent institution created
specifically to try charges of war crimes, genocide and crimes
against humanity. At present the United Nations has two specifically
targeted and temporary war crimes courts in operation. One deals with
suspects from the Bosnia-Herzegovina civil war of the early 1990s and
the other with people implicated in atrocities during unrest in
Rwanda in 1994.

Treaty supporters contend that a permanent international war crimes
court is ``the missing link'' in the global legal system and say that
over the past half century there have been many instances of war
crimes and crimes against humanity that have gone unpunished.

For example, supporters note that no one has ever been held
accountable for the alleged genocide in Cambodia in the 1970s when an
estimated 2 million people were killed by the Khmer Rouge or for
killings in such other countries as Mozambique, Liberia and El
Salvador.

Support for a permanent international war crimes tribunal was first
expressed in the years immediately after World War II. Interest in
creating such a court has been voiced periodically ever since.

The United Nations contends that setting up temporary courts to deal
with alleged war crimes in specific countries has been an inadequate
response because unavoidable delays lead to such consequences as
deteriorated evidence, escaped or vanished witnesses, and witness
intimidation.

Some in the United States have expressed concern, however, that U.S.
approval of such an international tribunal might subject American
citizens to politically motivated prosecutions.

Helms, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has
campaigned vigorously against the court. He has pledged to give top
priority during the congressional session starting next week to
passage of a bill that would bar U.S. cooperation with any such
international tribunal.

Helms also has tried to persuade Israel, which also is delaying its
decision until the last minute, to reject the international court. In
an opinion piece in an Israeli newspaper this month, Helms said that
if the court existed now, senior Israeli officials possibly could
have been indicted for actions taken to put down the ongoing spasm of
anti-Israeli violence by Palestinians.

The United States and Israel were among the handful of countries that
did not sign the statute creating the treaty when it was issued in
Rome in 1998.

Four countries signed the treaty on Friday - the Bahamas, Mongolia,
Tanzania and Uzbekistan -

What's ahead for Freedom Lovers?

I use the term Freedom Lovers intentionally. The word "conservative" or even
the word "Christian" is far too vague and indefinite. In today's lexicon,
Bill Clinton is said to personify the term Christian and Colin Powell is
hailed as a conservative. Yet, both men betray the substance of the
accolades heaped upon them. It's to the point that the terms conservative or
liberal seem to share more in common than most care to admit.

Liberals will steal one's freedom in the name of welfare or entitlement
programs, while conservatives will steal one's freedom in the name of law
enforcement or free trade. The result is the same: Americans continue to
lose their liberties.

What Nazism and Communism could not do through acts of war and conquest,
both major political parties in America are doing through acts of congress,
court rulings and executive orders: putting the shackles of bondage on the
American people. And the unfathomable part to the story is the fact that, on
the whole, the America people don't seem to mind.

Of course, there are those who do mind. There are those who yet regard
individual liberty (as described and defined in the Declaration of
Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights) as worth fighting and dying
for. Their lot may not be large, but it is principled and determined. What
does a new century hold in store for them?

Sooner or later, lovers of freedom will have to make the same kinds of
choices that yesterday's lovers of freedom had to make. It appears
inevitable. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have the courage or
fortitude to make the hard political decisions necessary to return America
to the founding principles of limited government, states rights, and
individual liberty. (It may be questioned how many of them even understand
those principles?)

Only the rise of a potent and principled third party can avert the hard
decisions to come. And since this seems remote, it would appear that, like
our ancestors, Freedom Lovers would have to choose from the following:

We can choose the option made by our Pilgrim Fathers and relocate. Or, we
can choose the option made by our Revolutionary brothers and separate. The
only other option is to live in subjugation, which to Freedom Lovers is not
an option at all. The unknown factor is how many Freedom Lovers will be left
when it becomes necessary to make the hard choices described above?

A few months ago, a friend of mine (who was recently elected to public
office) gave me a wonderful history book. On the inside cover he wrote, "To
Chuck, A Patriot and Friend. Sometimes I think you were born 200 years too
late." Or, at age 48, maybe 50 years too early.

The average life expectancy in the United States
was forty-seven.

Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States
had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.  A
three minute call from Denver to New York City
cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only
144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was
ten mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were
each more heavily populated than California.  With
a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only
the twenty-first most populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel
Tower.

The average wage in the U.S. was twenty-two
cents an hour.  The average U.S. worker made
between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn
$2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a
veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year,
and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in the United
States took place at home.

Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no
college education.  Instead, they attended medical
schools, many of which were condemned in the
press and by the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.  Eggs were
fourteen cents a dozen.  Coffee cost fifteen
cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a
month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people
from entering the country for any reason, either
as travelers or immigrants.

The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were:

galloped down the street on horses and started
randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or
anything else that caught their fancy -- were
an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities

only a handful of ranchers and their families.

Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been
discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles,

gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach
and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian
of health."

Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine.

Punch card data processing had recently been
developed, and early predecessors of the modern
computer were used for the first time by the
government to help compile the 1900 census.

Eighteen percent of households in the United States
had at least one full-time servant or domestic.

There were about 230 reported murders in the U.S.
annually.

Questions on drink are dull, but the underlying story isn't By Jack Kilpatrick
      The legal questions offered to the Supreme Court in Kronisch vs. U.S. may be dishwater dull. The underlying story is something else. This is a case haunted by the ghosts of a time gone by.
      The time was October 1952; the place was the Cafe Select in Paris. Stanley Milton Glickman, a promising young artist, had been drawn to the cafe by an acquaintance who wanted him to meet some American friends. For several hours they engaged in contentious debate on political issues. U.S. Circuit Judge Jose A. Cabranes tells the story:
      "As Glickman prepared to leave, one of the men offered Glickman a drink as a conciliatory gesture. Rather than call over the waiter, the man walked to the bar to get the drink, at which point Glickman observed that he had a clubfoot. Halfway through the drink, Glickman 'began to experience a lengthening of distance and a distortion of perception,' and he observed that 'the faces of the gentlemen flushed with excitement as they watched the execution of the drink.'
      "Glickman left the cafe and experienced distortions of color and other hallucinations. When Glickman awoke the next morning, he was hallucinating intensely. . . . He was taken to the American Hospital of Paris, where he was examined and given electric shock treatment. Over the next 10 months, Glickman remained mostly in his studio, experiencing 'stress, terror, hallucination and difficulty eating, which reduced his body to a feeble quality.'
      "Back in the United States, in July 1953, Glickman was treated by a doctor. He saw psychiatrists on a few occasions. His physical condition began to improve, but his mental condition did not. Over the next 25 years, he held various odd jobs but never painted again and never led a normal social life. He died on Dec. 11, 1992."
      The core allegation in the pending case is that Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, an agent of the Central Intelligence Agency, was the man with the clubfoot. Gloria Kronisch, Glickman's sister and executor of his estate, charges that on that night in 1952, Gottlieb laced her brother's drink with LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) as part of a surreptitious testing program. The CIA admits the program but says it can find no record of Glickman's unwitting participation. The records that might establish his sister's claim were destroyed in 1973 at Gottlieb's direction.
      In the 1970s, two Senate committees conducted separate hearings on the CIA's activities in drug research. An agent testified that in 1950 the CIA received reports that the Soviet Union was engaged in intensive efforts to produce LSD as a tool for interrogation. In response, the CIA launched a project that involved the surreptitious administration of LSD "to unwitting nonvolunteer subjects at all social levels, high and low, native American and foreign." The CIA's purpose was to develop defensive techniques for resisting interrogation and to evaluate the offensive uses of drugs as a tool for its own "unconventional interrogation techniques."
      As chief of the chemical division of the CIA's Technical Services Division, Gottlieb was the man in charge. He drafted an undercover agent of the Bureau of Narcotics to assist in clandestine experiments with LSD in New York. He himself took charge of experiments abroad. The CIA acknowledges that Gottlieb performed interrogations on foreign nationals, but not in France and not until 1953, a year after the alleged incident at the Cafe Select.
      Even before the story broke wide open before the Senate committees, Glickman had been trying to learn what had happened. His letters to the CIA drew unresponsive responses. Finally in 1983 he brought suit in U.S. District Court against Gottlieb and CIA Director Richard Helms under the Federal Tort Claims Act. The suit bounced up and down in federal courts until May 1999, two months after Gottlieb's death, when Glickman's case was dismissed on a motion of summary judgment. The case went up to a panel of the Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.
      Cabranes affirmed in large part. He dismissed Kronisch's basic suit against Helms and the United States as barred by the applicable statute of limitations. He left open the estate's slim chance of recovery by preserving a right for Glickman's executor to pursue a personal action against Gottlieb's estate. The claim must be limited to the allegation that Gottlieb himself administered the LSD-laced drink that night in Paris nearly 50 years ago.
      I doubt that the Supreme Court will take the case. It does not involve intra-circuit conflicts, and it presents no novel questions of statutory or constitutional law. (NB) -- Information Industry Association Vice President Ken Allen has told
Congress the National Security Agency is trying to take control over U.S.
information, in violation of the Computer Security Act of 1987.
 Allen said the NSA has much more money than the National Institute of
Standards and Technology, formerly the National Bureau of Standards, and is
using ambiguities in the law to seize power. While the act gives the NIST
control over security at the government's civilian computers, Allen said, a
recent memo issued by the two agencies gave the NSA control over "sensitive
but
unclassified" data, which could mean give the super-secret NSA
control
over anything.
 The Act was passed by Congress in the wake of a secret memo from
Admiral
John Poindexter, then National Security advisor, which could have put both
civilian and military information under the NSA's control, and disrupted the
free flow of information vital to science and industry. The NSA, which
maintains U.S. classified data, has signed agreements with the NIST,
formerly the National Bureau of Standards, including some language from that
memo which
might keep secret unclassified data.
 "We expressed grave concerns that it was loosely worded, and it could
undercut the intent of Congress," Allen told Newsbytes. "It is quite
possible the Poindexter Memorandum could re-emerge in a new context." The
IIA will have its annual meeting September 10-14 in New York, at which time
it will plot strategy. The IIA was instrumental in
getting the 1987 act
passed.

3. The Historical and International Context

... The thirty years beginning with the Sharpeville shootings in March 1960
(followed by the banning of the ANC and other organisations and the State of
Emergency) up to the first democratic elections in April 1994, constitute an
identifiable historical period. It was during these three decades that
apartheid policies were most expansively and aggressively pursued; that the
South African state made a decisive shift towards more overtly authoritarian
forms of social control and political repression; and that massive
transgressions of basic human rights in South Africa became commonplace,
bringing international notoriety to apartheid South Africa.

In 1977, PW Botha (at the time Minister of Defence) mapped out the terrain
in which the NSMS would be operating when he introduced the Defence White
Paper: 

"The resolution of the conflict in the times in which we now live demands
inter-dependent and co-ordinated action in all fields: military,
psychological, economic, political, sociological, technological, diplomatic,
ideological, cultural, etcetera. We are today involved in a war whether we
like it or not. It is therefore essential that a total national strategy
(is) formulated at the highest level."
The National Security Management System (NSMS) was instituted in 1979 as the
instrument to co-ordinate all state actions and implement reforms in line
with "total strategy". Over the years the government had built a large
network of Security Police and upgraded the police force in general to deal
with mass protest. BOSS, the civilian intelligence agency, expanded its
operations. Torture, recruitment of activists, employment of agents
provocateurs, propaganda against anti-apartheid forces, and the employment
of vigilantes became the stock-in-trade. The NSMS aimed to achieve maximum
efficiency and co-ordination of all these methods, and drew in the
additional capacity of the SADF, particularly its intelligence wing.
The NSMS, and its later versions, were premised on the belief that it is
possible to manage change through the redefinition of political, military
and economic constructs in a manner to the advantage of those who hold the
levers of state power. The underlying conceptual framework of the NSMS was
that 80% of actions to contain the security threat should be political, and
only 20% military; it was believed that the majority of people were
politically neutral, and only a small radical elite of "agitators",
"communists" and "terrorists" existed, who should be killed. In this
scenario, there was nothing intrinsically wrong with the status quo. The
apartheid state sought to create political stability through limited reforms
to apartheid combined with a variety of measures to counter the influence of
pro-democracy groups and the liberation movement; these ranged from setting
up a range of "counter-organisations," to attempts to brainwash or
psychlogically influence target groups, to measures designed to defuse
material grievances by upgrading infrastructure and the provision of
services, particularly in those areas considered trouble spots or "oliekol"
(oil spot) townships.
This period saw the genesis of the trend towards increasingly sophisticated
covert operations, continuing into the 1990s, which included illegal methods
(even by the regime's own standards) to suppress and disrupt the resistance
movement. In addition to attempts to bolster the discredited bantustan and
community councillor systems in general, there were renewed attempts to find
or create "credible" alternatives to the ANC.
Such initiatives included psychological pressure and misinformation directed
at the leadership of Inkatha to drive them further away from the liberation
movement. These methods drew on theories developed on the basis of
experiences of other wars against national liberation movements, and from
methods to destroy dissent adopted by other right-wing regimes, particularly
in Latin America.

:: BARAK TRYING HARD TO GIVE AWAY THE LAND OF ISRAEL: Israel Prime
Minister Ehud Barak's transition government is saying yes to US President
Bill Clinton's plan to hand over Judaism's holiest site, the Temple Mount,
to the PLO, but PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat is saying no. Clinton is asking
Israel to divide Jerusalem and give neighborhoods such as the Mount of
Olives to the Arabs. According to the Clinton proposal, there would be a
PLO state on 95% of Judea and Samaria, Arafat would get all of Gaza, and
the Jewish citizens there would be evicted from their homes, as would many
Jews in Judea and Samaria. Clinton further proposes that Arafat receive
some land in the Negev, to compensate the PLO for not getting 100% of
Judea and Samaria. Israel would have to allow 150,000 Arabs to live in the
country, since many Arabs fled Israel when five Arab nations attacked the
fledgling state in 1948. Barak told the country Thursday that his cabinet
voted to hand over the Temple Mount to the PLO late Wednesday night. Ten
ministers were in favor, two were against, and two abstained.

The Council of Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza (Yesha)
says that Barak asked his ministers to support his retreat from even more
of Judea and Samaria than Clinton is requesting. Clinton wants 95%; Barak
asked his ministers to support giving away 97%. The Council says Barak is
now ready to hand over Rachel's Tomb in Beit Lechem to the PLO. When Barak
retreated from Joseph's Tomb in Shechem, Arabs burned it to the ground
despite Yasser Arafat's earlier promises to protect Jewish holy sites.


:: MORE MURDERS IN THE LAND: Rabbi Binyamin Zev Kahane and his wife Talia
were murdered Sunday morning by Palestinian terrorists while en route from
Jerusalem to their home in Kfar Tapuach. The Kahane car was ambushed near
the town of Ofrah. Five of the late couple’s children were injured in the
attack, ranging in ages from 2 months to 10-years-old. Binyamin Zev Kahane
was the son of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was murdered in New York
ten years ago.

Capt. Gad Marsha, 30, of Kiryat Arba, and Sgt.-Maj. Yonatan Vromolin, 29,
of Ben Shemen were killed on Thursday when Palestinian terrorists exploded
a roadside bomb near the Sufa crossing in southern Gaza, HA’ARETZ
reported. The explosion occurred on Thursday afternoon, about three
kilometers [1.8 miles] north of the crossing between Israel and the Gaza
Strip, five kilometers [3 miles] north of Israel’s border with Egypt. An
Israel Defense Force (IDF) squad discovered a bomb near the security fence
and called for Vromolin, a police sapper, who arrived with additional
soldiers. While Vromolin was dismantling the bomb, another bomb exploded
nearby. Hizb'Allah television reported that Islamic Jihad claimed
responsibility for the attack. Hamas has also claimed responsibility.

Fifteen people were wounded Thursday in a bombing in the heart of Tel
Aviv when a series of pipe bombs planted in the rear of a public bus
exploded. Shortly after all 30 of the elderly passengers had been
evacuated from the bus, a second explosion went off. A third bomb
apparently malfunctioned and did not explode fully. Police officials said
it was a miracle that so few were injured and that there were no
casualties.

Israel saw the largest rally for a just peace that has been held since the 
outbreak of the intifadah 3 months ago...and it was a joint 
Israeli-Palestinian event.Women came in droves from all over Israel -- 
Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Druse. And despite the "closure" that 
Israel had imposed on the Occupied Territories, Palestinian women and men 
also managed, by means only they know, to cross the Green Line and reach 
us.The day began in the Notre Dame conference center located 
symbolically on the border of Jewish and Palestinian Jerusalem. The 
walls carried two huge banners in Hebrew and Arabic: Women Demand: 
No to Occupation - Yes to a Just Peace! We opened with greetings 
from three international women peace leaders who flew in especially for 
the occasion -- Luisa Morgantini from Italy, Simone Susskind from Belgium, 
and June Jacobs from the U.K. The co-moderators -- Hannah Safran from 
Women in Black and Nabeha Murkus from Tandi -- reported to the crowd about 
solidarity demonstrations being held throughout the world, and of greetings 
from organizations and individuals from a long list of 
countries.Women then took the podium one by one, Palestinian and Israeli 
alternately, to speak movingly and passionately of both the suffering as 
well as the determination to end the bloodshed between our peoples. 
This was a conference "of the people", but we were glad to see in the 
audience 3 Israeli MKs (Tamar Gozanski, Naomi Chazan, and Muhammad Barake) 
expressing their support for the grassroots work. The simultaneous 
translations into Hebrew, Arabic, and English allowed each woman to speak in 
her own language. I will just quote two: Michal Pundak-Sagie, activist 
in New Profile: Movement for the Civil-ization of Israeli Society, called 
upon soldiers to refuse orders that their conscience does not allow. 
And Zahira Kamal, leading grassroots spokeswoman in the Occupied 
Territories, declared that the principles of the Coalition of Women for a 
Just Peace provide a sound basis for peace between our 
peoples.From the conference center, waiting buses moved the entire 
crowd to Hagar Plaza, the location of Jerusalem's Women in Black vigil, and 
an estimated 2,000 women filled the entire plaza and spilled over onto 
the side streets carrying the traditional black hand signs with "End the 
Occupation" painted in Hebrew, Arabic, and English. This silent 
one-hour vigil was an even more dramatic sight than usual, and TV crews 
from all over the world -- even from Israel -- were there to capture 
it. The extreme right wing did their best to infiltrate the ranks, to 
provoke us and draw attention to themselves, and finally ended up exchanging 
blows with the police, but they were overcome and moved behind barriers -- 
out of sight, mind, and media.At 2:00 pm, the crowd poured out of the 
plaza and from every corner and sidestreet, we began our march toward East 
Jerusalem. Men and women who had joined us from other organizations -- 
Gush Shalom brought its own busload of activists -- held aloft their own 
collection of banners and signs for peace. The sight was 
overwhelming, as the street filled with marchers and voices. Nabila 
Espanioli from Nazareth grabbed a megaphone and led responsive chanting: 
"Peace?" "YES!" -- "Occupation?" "NO!" doing renditions in Hebrew, Arabic, 
English, and even Italian for the delegation of 35 who had flown in for the 
action. Flying high were signs and banners saying "Palestine Side by 
Side With Israel -- On the '67 Borders", "Jerusalem - 2 capitals for 2 
states", "The Age of Generals is Over", "Fund the Poor, Not Settlers", and 
"We Refuse to be Enemies".It was breathtaking to be part of that 
march. But the moment that brought tears to my eyes was when I greeted 
a man being pushed in a wheelchair beside me, and asked if he wanted to hold 
a sign. In response, he unbuttoned his collar and pointed to a deep 
scar just below his neck. The man pushing the wheelchair 
explained: "We're from Hebron. This is one of the victims of the 
massacre by Baruch Goldstein. He wanted to join you today." A 
victim of the violence who harbors no hatred in his heart. I shook his 
hand wordlessly.As we finally all assembled in the park beside the 
ancient walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, people spread out on the grass 
on this unusually warm and sunny winter day, exhilirated and awaiting 
the closing ceremony. Because of the traffic jams we had caused, the 
sound system had not yet arrived, but the crowd waited patiently.

I lived in Northern California for 25 years, most of it in El Dorado county
which is the source of much of the water used in Sacramento. However, in all
the years I lived there, almost nothing was done to plan for the future by
improving water supplies or electrical power for the county.

This has been a problem in California for many years. At one point, Marin
county, which is across from San Francisco, simply refused to improve its
water supply, in spite of a growing population. The thinking behind its, and
El Dorado County’s, backwardness was simple. If the people living in those
counties refused to provide for an increase in population, through zoning
ordinances or failing to plan for them, they could keep the population down.

Of course, it didn’t work. At this point there are over one million illegal
aliens in California. There’s been a natural increase, in spite of everything
the no-growthers could do to convince folks they shouldn’t have children. At
the insistence of the no-growthers, California voters opted in 1989 to shut
down its Rancho Seco nuclear power plant near Sacramento. There was no plan
to build another, or fix Rancho Seco

So, guess what? There is a shortage this winter of electrical power in
California and electricity prices are sky-rocketing. This has prompted
California’s Democrat Governor, Gray Davis, to go to Washington, D.C. and
threaten Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan and Treasury Secretary
Lawrence H. Summers with “using his emergency powers” against
power-generating companies.

One of his threats was to declare an emergency and call out the National
Guard to take over the power plants as long as the emergency lasts.


"The problem is that the generator can charge anything they want today and
the only people that have control over them are the [Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission], which has refused to take any control over them,"
Governor Davis said on the "Nightly Business Report" on PBS. "I am not going
to let these generators, making eight or nine hundred percent [profits),
frequently gaming and market-sharing the system unduly, drive California to
its knees," he said. He also warned the power-generating firms that "if
deregulation fails in California, deregulation is over in America."

According tothe Washington Times today,


“Consumers in California this winter are faced with a choice between power
shortages and skyrocketing electricity bills, while the state's utilities are
veering toward bankruptcy because of the astronomical prices they have to pay
to import the energy needed to supply the state. “Also yesterday, the parent
company of Southern California Edison Co. revealed that it wants to raise
consumer electricity rates by almost one-third, effective next week. “Many
California businesses, including vital Silicon Valley companies that have
driven growth in the nine-year economic expansion, are faced with paying the
escalating electricity bills or shutting down and laying off workers.”
It’s not very likely that Gray Davis and the Californians are going to have a
great deal of sympathy for their self-inflicted plight. The problem is not
de-regulation. The problem is in the no-growthers determined effort to push
all the responsibility for its needs onto other states. For example, when
they closed the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant, how was that loss made up
for consumers in California?

They simply began to buy more electricity from generation plants in the Four
Corners area where Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico come together.
California eliminated a nuclear power plant, which produced the cleanest and
most efficient electricity available, in favor of electricity produced by
plants that use coal or natural gas to generate electricity. It didn’t bother
California in the least that by closing down Rancho Seco they were increasing
the pollution for people in New Mexico, Arizona and even in Mexico. After
all, they didn’t live there.

Now, it appears from the Washington Times report, California’s short-sighted
no-growth policies of the past 20 plus years are coming home to roost and
spilling across its borders to the rest of the nation:

“This winter's record-high prices for natural gas are partly the result of a
leap in demand for gas from California utilities, which must use the
clean-burning fuel to meet environmental regulations.

“Other Western states have seen their electricity prices skyrocket as
utilities divert

The "crisis" is totally contrived. Half the plants in California are
curently down "for repairs." The parent corporations of the local power
companies are making money hand over fist. There is PLENTY of
electricity to go around. This isn't about electricity. It's about
money.

Poverty crisis

New figures from the U. S. Census Bureau indicate that the
percentage of Philadelphia school-age children living in poverty fell
by about 19% over the last three years.  Since poverty correlates
with poor academic achievement, this is good news, right?  Not
according to school officials.

"It could mean a decrease in federal funds," Jim Sheffer, chief of
federal programs for the Pennsylvania Department of Education,
told the Philadelphia Inquirer.  "We're very concerned," added
William Kozlowski, the director of the Philadelphia district's Office
of Grants and Fiscal Services.  "We knew all along this could be a
problem."

No word on what measures will be taken by city officials to
increase the poverty population.

Oh the judge was so gentle with her - and she could hardly wait to go
out in the pubs.

For some time Americans have hired overseas help bringing to
USA...the parents of this Nanny as she was called, also spent moneye
that was collected in illegal manner but at least the Court sent this
woman back to England where she no doubt will abuse and torment some
other child..

Abuse in England?   Well remember the funeral of Princess Diana and the
display of emotion - seems like the entire country is either drugged or
boozed up most of the time.

Why did this girl receive what appeared to be special treatment?

At least they kicked her back to England where she could not profit
going on the TV routes.

Her continual drinking of water was the sign of a liarold Indian
trick here, for liars have dry tongues.

It all comes down to the definition of abuse. Unless you raise your child in a bubble, 
90% of parents will have committed 'abuse' by some standards. Note that the article 
doesn't mention sexual abuse, which is important.

Smack your child? Lock it in it's room for a while? Give it a glass of watered wine? 
Yell at it? Make it miss a meal for something particularly naughty? Fail to pick it up 
from school on time? You could be guilty of abuse by some standards.

Cain and Abel were NOT the ONLY children Adam and Eve
had. In fact they bore many children as it was God's
command for Adam and Eve to replenish the earth. In
fact one theory states that the Lord bless them to
conceive twins each time so that the male and female
of different twin births were to get married and bear
more children to avoid genetic corruption of the human
race. God's miracles are produced by divine laws
partly unknown to men and not by their senseless
destruction.

 Then it follows the question: then why only Cain and
Abel are especially mentioned in the Bible? The answer
partly lies in the fact that the Lord wanted to record
for us the first conspiracy in the world, whose
consequences are so far-reaching for the human kind
nowadays. Unfortunately, the Bible does not state
(though it emplies) that Cain was NOT alone in his
conspiracy to kill Abel. Neither was Abel himself.
When exposed, Cain was punished and some of God's
children (not few) and their families followed him and
did not repent of their deeds, rejecting God's words
and those who supported Abel. The deeds of Cain's seed
is another story. Ever since, every big or small
conspiracy, a Hitler or any other mass
murderer,supported by powerful forces, is in a certain
sense Cain`s seed symbolically speaking. Their motives
being the same, killing and opressing others to get
power and money.

 On my way to work last week, I stopped behind a purple Geo Metro with my

 least favorite bumper sticker ever plastered across the back. It read:
 "It'll be a great day when schools have all the money they need
 and the Air Force has to have a bake sale to buy a bomber."

 At that moment, I realized who the most undervalued and under
 appreciated segment of society is. And it ain't teachers. Teachers, I
 believe, rank second on that list. Heading the list are the men and women
of
 the
 forces, who, throughout history, have protected our country from the
Hitlers
 and Stalin's - they who would have had our white children marching to the
 school bus in jackboots and our minority children locked up in
laboratories
 and labor camps.

 The U.S. military - the most powerful and influential group of people in
 the world, hands-down - gets an awfully bad rap these days. Many Americans
 seem to think that simply because the communist Soviet Union no longer
 exists, the world is as safe as Beaver Cleaver's neighborhood. This, of
 course, ignores three facts:

 1) Dozens of countries have nuclear weapons that could take
 out millions of people with the turn of a key.
 2) Leaders of several countries (e.g. North Korea, Iraq, Iran,
 Libya, Lebanon and perhaps China and Russia) would love to see the U.S.
 and its people blown to pieces and, most importantly
 3) The U.S. has the greatest collection of human, economic,
 natural and technological resources anywhere on Earth, making it the
 greatest natural target for military aggression.

 Though some would like to fashion the U.S. of the 21st Century as a
 flowery feel-good fantasy where war and violence are mere after thoughts
of
 a
 time gone by, that can never be the case. As bad as our crime and drug
 problems are, we're still considered the jewel of the planet by the half
 of the world that has yet to make its first phone call.

 In ancient Greece, the people of Athens were unparalleled world leaders in
 art, philosophy and technology. Their rivals in Sparta were not; instead,
 the Spartans built massive, well-trained armies. When the two countries
 fought, who won? Sparta. And  guess who lost their entire civilization
 because they didn't think it was important to build an appropriate army?

 Athens! Right now, the U.S. has the best of Athens and Sparta: we are
 the most cultured and most well-defended country in the world. As we
 continue to lower our defenses by devaluing the military, we open
ourselves
 wider and wider to a takeover. A takeover of the U.S.?

 Ridiculous, one might say. But why does it seem so unlikely? Because the
 power and protection of the U.S. military has been so overwhelming in the
 last century that Americans have been free to enjoy a comfort level unlike
 any in the world. We all take it for granted that we will never be invaded
 by another country, but few other countries can afford to be so sure of
 themselves. It's not only Americans who can go to bed feeling safe.

 Children everywhere from Israel to England, from Brazil to Japan know
that,
 if their country is attacked, the U.S. will be there to help.

 On TV, the military is often represented by stiff, buttoned-down generals
or
 the occasional drill sergeant who is accused of feeling up a female
recruit.
 In reality, things are much different. The men and women of the armed
forces
 are, in most ways, just like everyone else: they are mechanics, pilots,
 cooks, photographers, engineers, secretaries and X-ray technicians. They
 work from 8 to 5 and then come home to their families. The one difference
 comes when the U.S. or any of its allies is threatened by a foreign power.
 In that case, military people pack up and ship out, off to fight - and
many
 times die - so the rest of the country, including teachers, can continue
 their lives without interruption.

 Teachers mold young minds into intelligent, independent people,and they
 should be admired for the job they do; however, I don't know any teachers
 who are required to catch bullets and swallow shrapnel if so ordered by
the
 principal. So, old-fashioned as it may seem, I'm happy to give my taxes to
 the military and tell the tots and teachers to fire up the oven if they
want
 extra dough. Make muffins, cookies and candy and be happy you're allowed
to.
 Because, as the old saying goes, if it wasn't for  the U.S. military, we'd
 all be speakin' German now."

 Well, I have four words on the issue of Jesse and the disenfranchised
 voters--PUT UP OR SHUT UP!  And this Carla Binion must be very young or
 have a very bad memory--all her articles seem to have no historical
 placement and are written as though these events happen in a
 vacuum--isolated from all other events.

 Saying the media is not paying attention to Jesse is absurd since he has
 his own show, Equal Time, every Sunday.  This past week, his guest was
 Arianna Huffington.  I personally like the guy and often watch him.
 Jesse, having been paid off or told to tone it down by party bosses or
 whatever, is himself back-peddling.  This is a pattern with him and he
 does it over and over again.

 First, the extreme rhetoric, then he tones it down, then apparently
 makes a deal of some sort.  Maybe this is how he looks so stunning in
 his extravagant wardrobe and limo.  Just remember Ron Brown and how
 Jesse screamed for an investigation into the bullet hole in Brown's
 head, etc.  Then he toned it down and finally did a complete reversal
 and decided no investigation was needed.  Finally, he said an
 investigation would be a terrible thing and upset the family needlessly,
 etc. And that is how he behaves over and over.

 Somewhere along the way, the Jesse Jackson who used to tell blacks to
 stop doing drugs and shooting each other and get an education and a job
 must have figured out that if they all did, he'd be out of a job.  His
 time has come and gone and he does not realize it yet.  Shame on the
 Democratic Party for not ever putting him in a position of national
 importance because he is such a gifted speaker and commands respect.  I
 still say he looks better in a white shirt than any politician in the
 country.  He has en elegance about him and a talent that has been
 wasted.  Now he is trying to relive the past and it is sad to see him
 struggle in this manner, degrading.

 Of course one can find voters whose rights were violated if one is
 fabricating them.  Produce one name and address of a credible registered
 voter who will swear then were denied the right to vote in an illegal
 manner.  Come on, let's hear it!

 It did not happen.  Repeat, IT DID NOT HAPPEN, folks.  Here in the Deep
 South, we have done everything to make things like voting more
 accessible to blacks for years and no body in their right mind is going
 to do otherwise.  It is asking for more trouble and law suits than
 anybody could dream of much less want!  Not to mention that it is wrong
 not to allow voting, but the trouble it would bring down on one's
 head--one would have to be a complete and total fool to even think of
 taking on voting rights.  We have certainly had enough of that decades
 ago.  We are not stupid; we just talk funny.

 Speaking of which, my rights, well more so those of my older maternal
 relatives, were violated as there was no Cajun interpreter at my poll.
 There are Hispanics, some Afrikaners (speaking some form of Dutch,
 maybe?), several Cajuns and a few no body can understand who vote at my
polling place.  Do Mennonites speak German?   None of us
 had interpreters like the Creole's are whining about.  My grandfather
 who only sounded like Justin WIlson and did not cook like him, had more
 pride than to go to the poll without going over the ballot until he had
 it pretty well straight in his mind BEFORE going to vote, getting help
 with any English he required from grandchildren, neighbors and people at
 church or in stores.  Come election day, he could have voted in the
 dark!  Sample ballots are every where before every election and one can
 have it thoroughly explained.

 That said, the fact that almost every poll worker in Florida is a
 Democrat adds to the problem.  No matter how old and enfeebled they
 become they will not give up these cherished positions, a Republican
 might get it!  Add to it that many whites are afraid to work in the
 black neighborhoods because of higher crime rates and not living there
 and you have black, Democrats manning the polls--huummm, not as much fun
 to accuse them of denying African Americans the right to vote, now is
 it?  Sprinkle in the few whites in black neighborhoods being retirees
 from "up Nawth" and bleeding heart liberals for the most part and it
 just plain does not make for good politics to charge them--looks bad for
 "The Party."

 So if any of you have information of people who want to pursue charges
 that their voting rights were violated, let's hear all about it.  Better
 yet, forward a copy to the Attorney General of Florida, a guess
 what--DEMOCRAT!  He will see to it that the law is enforced for his own,
 won't he?  Sue his own party if civil rights were violated by Democrats
 the same as he would Republicans, won't he?  Don't hold your breath.

To Activate a Programmed "Sleeper" Assassin?

Sometime during the first week of December, a Rumor Mill News Agent called and 
told me that The Campaign for America's Children, a non-partisan, not-for-profit 
organization had begun running an ad she thought I would be interested in. The agent 
lives in the midwest, in the area where the four states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas 
and Missouri come together. Most people wouldn't have noticed anything unusual about 
the ad, but this agent has carefully studied everything Rumor Mill News has written 
about Mind Control and understood how different tones, words, and music can be 
combined to trigger a programmed "Manchurian Candidate" into action.

More specifically, the agent had read the article in which we talked about one 
specific song that was used to "trigger" "sleepers". A "sleeper" is a person who has 
been programmed, using drugs, hypnosis and/or electronic methods, to carry out a 
specific mission. After the "sleeper" is programmed, they are sent back, to live a 
"normal" life... until they are needed to carry out the mission for which they were 
programmed.

There are many different ways to "trigger" a sleeper. The earliest methods 
were "trigger words". As electronics advanced,"triggers" became tones, music, or a 
combination of the two. The "triggers" were embedded in music and videos. The 
"sleeper" was programmed to "activate" when the music or video that contained the 
"triggers" were played.

One of the "embedded tone and command triggers", which was originally created 
and used in programming "sleepers" ten to twenty years ago, was the song "Twinkle, 
Twinkle Little Star." The song, with its "embedded" triggering tones and/or voice 
commands, would be used in television and radio ads. When a specific "sleeper" or 
group of "sleepers" needed to be triggered, the ads would be played over the radio or 
television, in the area where the "sleeper" lived.

Certain major corporations and Madison Avenue advertizing agencies have a long 
history of working with the government. Nursery rhymes such as "Twinkle, Twinkle 
Little Star" can be worked into the advertisements that are played on television and 
radio. These ads can be targeted to population areas where programmed "sleepers" or 
"sleeper" are living, thereby activating only certain sleepers without having to have 
personal contact in any manner.

The other viable alternative, for most of the case subjects under our control, 
is to implement a "rider package" that will compel him/her to fulfill the functions of 
our level four programming, by placing an appropriate trigger in his mind. He or she 
will continue to lead a perfectly normal life until made active by a command from a 
command file. Any number of unrelated triggers can be implanted hypnotically--just in 
case the first one has been lost in the deep fog when you bring the subject back to 
the Pre-Level One

supremacy has been embedded in capitalism since its very beginnings, it is
no surprise that racism continues to be an impediment to the very movements
that are committed to struggling for change.  The panel will discuss new
ways of talking about coalition building and racism, confronting white skin
privilege and breaking through old, divisive assumptions and
behaviors.  This is a participatory workshop.

  Art of Nonviolence
The visual aspects of a campaign and demonstration are a critical factor in
getting the message out. Discuss guerilla street theater, puppets, media
images, costumes, and much more.

What are the Tactics For:
Exploring the Targets and Demands of our Movements Julie Davids will host a
panel to explore the importance or irrelevance of formal demands and the
picking of targets as elements of our campaigns and movements.
Globalization, environmental destruction, AIDS drugs prices, criminal
Injustice, global sweatshops, and other movements will be examined.

  Ask the Lawyers
Mark Goldstone will host a panel of lawyers to answer questions from
activists. Hear from the lawyers who defended activists in Seattle,
Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Find out what did and
didn't work in the streets and especially in the courts. Lawyers will
address how we can combat the new, repressive, paramilitary tactics in
response to mass mobilizations. There will be plenty of time for questions
and answers.

Nonviolence as a Philosophy vs. Nonviolence as a Tactic Chris Ney -
Believing that social change requires participation from a wide range of
people, Chris will show how nonviolence can offer common ground without
compromising core values. Large group presentation and small group
discussion will help participants clarify for themselves where they stand
on the issues and better understand and respect those who hold different
viewpoints.

  The Importance of Direct Action
Craig Rosebraugh - The history of direct action as it applies to social and
political movements is often neglected and even sacrificed for teachings
primarily focused on state sanctioned forms of protest. Yet the history of
direct action, both in the U.S. and abroad, is rich, plentiful and has
demonstrated the importance of this strategy in the advancement of many
struggles. This workshop will discuss the importance of direct action both
in a historical context and in current day society.

  Organizing Resistance

disobedience? What is morally, ethically and ecologically justifiable when

WELL Bill, a little baby was murdered in her charge - she was anxious to
get to the bars, but all during her testimony she continually drank
water - she showed no feelings for the baby.

The parents I believe were Indians (from India)but at least they
prevented this girl who was found guilty of murder then reduced by the
Judge to 2nd degee, at least she will be be permitted to making money
from this crimeother money collected for her was virtually stolen
and put to personal use.

Parents used poor judgment but in their mind they had paid out a lot of
money to find someone good.

This item is worth reading - at least we were spaed her appearance on
Rivera or Groden or Kingthe usual route.

Why no sympathy for he parents?  I imagine by now this "nanny" has a
special bar stool with a seat belt so she won't fall off - but the baby
is still dead.

Gun Laws Offer No Protection

The recent mass murder in Wakefield, Massachusetts is providing a
number of valuable lessons in media coverage, the behavior of the
anti-gun lobby, and most important, the effectiveness of gun laws.
Turn on any news channel and you will see all the usual suspects. Talking heads
debate the effect on proposed gun laws in Congress.
Breathless reporters spend long minutes of precious air time examining
every possible detail of the weapons involved in the murders.  Of
course they make all the usual errors like calling a pistol a
semi-automatic revolver and inventing other amazing misnomers.
You might think that people who call themselves journalists would make
an effort to become more familiar with a subject that they love so
much.  Unfortunately, journalists as a group have demonstrated time
after time that they know little about guns and do not want to learn.
They don't want any inconvenient facts getting in the way of a good
story that casts the cold eye of suspicion on gun owners.
The anti-gun lobby is already dancing in the blood of the innocent victims.  The gun
haters see another opportunity to force their vision
of a gun free utopia a little bit farther down the slippery slope.
They conveniently ignore the fact that Massachusetts already has some
of the toughest gun laws in the nation.  New restrictions added in the
last few years have made life extremely difficult for law abiding gun
owners in that state, but the killer, as usual, simply ignored the
laws.  If these laws are supposed to be so good for us, why don't they
provide any protection?
The dirty little secret of the anti-gun lobby is that gun laws have never been an
effective way to reduce violence.  In fact, the reverse
may be true, since studies by John Lott and others have proven that
mass shootings, as well as rapes and assaults, are less likely in
states that have issued a large number of concealed weapon permits.
The statistics are in and gun control doesn't work.   Passing
additional laws that make self defense more difficult will never
reduce mass murders or any other kind of crime.
Insane persons intent on carrying out an act of mass revenge invariably choose a
location where their victims are certain to be unarmed.  This is one reason why
these attacks always occur in places
like schools or office buildings where weapons for self defense are
prohibited.
Early reports from Wakefield indicate that the killer expected no resistance.  He
took plenty of time to calmly reload his weapon while
the unarmed victims dialed 911 in vain.  The laws and the anti-gun
culture of Massachusetts guaranteed his success.   Things would have
turned out much differently if someone in the ill-fated office had
been armed with a handgun and a cool head.  Perhaps the attack would
never have occurred if the killer feared for his own life.
Regardless of how you feel about guns or self defense, you must admit
that murderers will always be able to find a weapon suitable for their
deranged purpose.  If not a gun, then an automobile, a homemade bomb
or a simple can of gasoline are just as lethal and even more dangerous
to bystanders.
Anti-gun laws only deprive good people of the right to self defense
and distract society from the real causes of violence.  If we truly
wish to reduce violence, we must turn away from the mean-spirited
cultural war against gun owners and open our minds to new ideas.

different things. I would have never known, by your postings, that you are a believer.

agree with it 100%? I thought this story had some good points, especially the whole 
anti-semite thing. I also thought it was informative in helping people see that some 
conspiracy theories are started by those who will be helped by them, such as Hitler. 
Surely you couldn't disagree with every point made. Living on conspiracy theory is not 
the same as believing it exists. The point being, if that is all you live for, what 
kind of life is that? Is that such a horrible message? I assume you have a life beyond
