Didn't know that there are armed U.K. Police patrols. Haven't seen any of them. in all the major cities there are mobile armed response teams. they are permanently armed and actively patrolling. in the old days there were no regular armed teams on the streets- except for northern ireland. But what about the import of surplus military weapons into the U.K.? mostly going to terrorist groups- it is no surprise that the increase in particularly ex-military weapons coincides with a rearming by the dissident republican groups in ireland. Louis Theroux investigates Them: Adventures with Extremists by Jon Ronson Saturday April 7, 2001 The Guardian Them: Adventures with Extremists Jon Ronson 352pp, Picador, 16.99 There is a version of history that holds that the world is secretly run by a shadowy cabal of predominantly Jewish international financiers and politicians who meet several times a year to decide which wars to start, which countries to bankrupt, which gun-owners to oppress, and so on. This view, which has been around at least since the late 19th century, when it was popularised in a hugely influential piece of anti-semitic propaganda, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion , exists in various versions - with "Jews" occasionally being replaced by "Bilderbergers", "New World Order", "Illuminati" or "12ft lizard creatures". Though undoubtedly nutty, its paranoid and exciting "top secret" flavour has meant it continues to appeal to a motley crew of self-styled "researchers" and evangelists on the fringes of society, including Ku Klux Klansmen, militias, certain fundamentalist Muslims and an ex-Coventry goalkeeper called David Icke. For Them: Adventures with Extremists, reporter and documentary film-maker Jon Ronson spent several years in the company of a few of these fringe-dwellers, in an attempt to understand their mindset and to see to what - if any - extent their fears were founded in fact. The resulting book is a funny and compulsively readable picaresque adventure through a paranoid shadow world, with Ronson playing Sancho Panza to a cast of obsessives. Ronson has a deft, ironic touch and a brilliant way with scene-setting and direct speech - much of the action is so neat and pacy it reads almost like a novel - and it is one of the book's great merits that it never takes itself too seriously. Conspiracy investigators tend to be incompetent and petty in direct proportion to the delusional grandeur of their ambitions, something Ronson is not slow to pick up on. "I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO!" one investigator screams at his colleague. "Make a big show of shouting down the phone! Steal the limelight! And then Jon will write about you !" In one of the book's funniest chapters, Ronson accompanies an ultra-right-wing conspiracy investigator named Big Jim Tucker as he attempts to infiltrate a meeting of the Bilderberg Group (a semi-secret council of international industrialists and statesmen, and a favourite bugbear of the paranoid fringe). They end up being chased by scary-looking security personnel in dark glasses and Ronson panics, trying to get the British Embassy to rescue him. "I am essentially a humorous journalist," he pleads down the phone. "I am a humorous journalist out of my depth." But Ronson also has a point to make about the way beliefs in general tend to demonise "them", where "them" might be diabolical Jews, 12ft lizards, or indeed the weirdos who believe in diabolical Jews and 12ft lizards. Exhibit A in the fringe-dwellers' case for the existence of a shadowy all-powerful cabal is the true-life story of the Weavers, a family with admittedly far-out religious views who, yes, consorted with neo-Nazis and who moved to the remotest corner of northern Idaho to be as far as possible from the "Zionist Occupational Government". Vicki Weaver and her son Sammy were shot in cold blood by federal marshals in a paramilitary-style raid. Conspiracy theorists have ever since argued that this is proof that the world is indeed run by a secret oligarchy; Ronson's compelling case is that what happened was made possible because the Weavers were repeatedly described in the media as "white supremacists" and therefore in some way worthy of extermination. Another chapter examines the strange history of David Icke, the footballer turned BBC commentator turned Green Party spokesman turned self-proclaimed son of God. Ronson finds Icke on a lecture tour of Canada, pursuing his new calling as an investigator of the secret elite of lizard shape-shifters (the Queen and Ted Heath are among those under suspicion) who run the world. Icke's "theory" is basically The Protocols of the Elders of Zion with a new cast and a few script changes. Not surprisingly, Icke has come under suspicion of anti-semitism; as his tour progresses he finds his readings heavily picketed and his radio interviews cancelled. Icke vehemently repudiates the accusations, and reading Ronson's account it is difficult not to conclude that, while we are right to be on our guard against paranoid anti-semitism, we should also be on our guard against the paranoid excesses of anti-anti-semitism. Not only might it be unfair to Icke, but by implying that he is so dangerous that he has to be censored, the watchdogs are giving a patina of seriousness to ideas that are - let's face it - very, very silly. Doctors rely so heavily on what's printed in journals, it directly affects a drug's success or failure. Now, many drug companies are actually writing those articles, then paying doctors to sign their names to them. It's called ghostwriting, reports CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson. "The articles are written by drug company researchers, given to an outside doctor to review and sign his or her name to and then submitted to a journal. In effect, it's like washing dirty money," explained Douglas Peters, a medical malpractice attorney. It's not illegal, but it can be misleading. Critics say that's just what happened when Wyeth-Ayerst wanted to create a market demand for its "fen-phen" diet drug, Redux. Wyeth hired a middleman, a company called Excerpta Medica, to write and get published nine medical journal articles on Redux. Excerpta paid doctors to review and sign the articles, then submitted them to journals with no mention of Wyeth. Excerpta claims it told the doctors that Wyeth was behind all of it. But Dr. Richard Atkinson, a professor of Medicine and Nutritional Sciences and the director of the Beers-Murphy Clinical Nutrition Center, Univ of Wisconsin Madison Medical School, says he wasn't told. He reviewed and signed one of those Redux papers, thinking Excerpta was an independent researcher. "If I knew that a drug company had some role, whatever role, in sponsoring a talk, an article, a symposium whatever, I think I would be more on my guard to make sure that there was not any bias introduced." Biased literature can make a drug sound better or safer than it really is. And unbeknownst to most doctors, it's even finding its way into the most respected medical journals. Dr. Marcia Angell, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, says she was getting more and more ghostwritten papers from medical school doctors. "A drug company that controls the data and has a ghostwriter writing the paper may neglect to write about the side effects of a drug." In a deposition on January 15, 1999, former Wyeth executive Jo Alene Dolan said all drug companies ghostwrite, but it doesn't mean the articles aren't accurate. When questioned about Dr. Atkinson's article, she said, "Apparently we wrote this article for him." She was then asked if it was bought and paid for by Wyeth-Ayerst and replied, "I'm not sure that's the way I would characterize it. It was funded by Wyeth-Ayerst." Yet Wyeth's middleman, Excerpta Medica, claims it doesn't ghostwrite; it "facilitates," that doctors always know about drug industry involvement and "the author has final editing authority." Dr. Atkinson did tell Excerpta that article may make Redux "sound better than it really is" and suggested some changes. But before the article could be published, Redux was linked to heart and lung problems and pulled from the market. "They plunged themselves into bankruptcy for their own strategic advantage -- not the best interests of the people of California," Davis said. ... Pacific Gas Electric, the state's largest investor-owned utility, filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors Friday after declaring that talks with Davis over a possible bail-out strategy had reached a standstill. A Situation of Strife and Shame: There are many Christians today who believe that anyone who is not a Christian is doomed to an eternity of suffering in hell. Any decent person, believing this, would be compelled to try to save as many people from this fate as possible. But is this belief correct? Jesus Christ, having noted the faith and righteousness of a Roman centurion, a Pagan, proclaimed: "Assuredly I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 8:10-12) If we accept these words as true, and surely we should, then it is clear that heaven will contain many who are not Christians, and hell will contain many who are! Clearly, throughout the Gospels, Jesus Christ sets forth the criteria for entrance into the kingdom of heaven, and those criteria include love, kindness, forgiveness, and a refusal to judge others: "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." (Matthew 6:14-15) "For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the same measure you use, it will be measured back to you." The faith which saves us is not faith in the goodness of our works, nor faith that we have the right theology and/or belong to the right church. Rather, it is faith in God, and in His mercy: "So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy." (Romans 9:16) But the Wiccans, you will say, do not have faith in God. Yet by their own theology, they certainly do. Those who call them Satan-worshippers are entirely wrong. French scientist Corinne Ida Lasmezas said that she and a team of French and British scientists proved that the agent that causes mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE ), can be passed from one primate to another intravenously. She warned, however, that the study had not proven that vCJD can be passed to humans through the blood supply. ``Everything depends on the amount of the infectious agent in blood -- we don't know if there is enough in human blood to infect another human,'' she said. The team's research, published last week in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, dealt with the behavior of prions -- the distorted proteins blamed for causing BSE and its human equivalent, new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (news - web sites) (vCJD) -- in primates. ``We wanted to better understand the behavior of the BSE agent in primates to have an idea of the risk that vCJD poses in humans,'' Lasmezas told Reuters in a telephone interview. ``Effectively, this is the first time BSE has been passed between primates via blood,'' she said. She said the study had also shown that the BSE prions become more virulent to primates after they have replicated in primates. They would lie dormant for less time when passed from one primate to another than when they cross from cattle to primates. Sick Monkeys In the study, Lasmezas and her team first infected macaque monkeys by taking concentrated samples of the mad cow agent from brains of infected humans and cattle and injecting them directly into the monkeys' brains. They then took samples from the infected monkeys' brains and injected them into the brains of healthy monkeys. They also took samples from the brains of sick monkeys and injected them into the veins of other, healthy monkeys. The researchers found that all monkeys that were injected with the agent -- either into the bloodstream or into the brain directly -- became sick with the fatal disease. More importantly, however, the scientists found that the BSE agent lies dormant for a shorter period of time once it adapts to primates. ``This means that once the agent has adapted to primates, it's more virulent for another primate,'' she said. Prions have puzzled scientists since they were discovered. Normally present in the brain and other tissue of mammals, they can take on an abnormally folded form that causes the brain to become spongy and eventually wither. It is generally thought that prions can propagate, clump up and cause disease without the use of any kind of genetic material at all, unlike viruses, bacteria and parasites. They are blamed for a range of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies that include BSE in cattle and vCJD in humans. At least 85 people in Britain and two in France have died from vCJD. Because neither the incubation period for vCJD in humans nor the dose required to infect humans is known, scientists do not know how many more people may be infected by the agent. From 1992 to 2000, the average reading scores for fourth graders on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation's report card, remained flat. The average score for top students increased while the average score for bottom students declined even more significantly. The release of the scores led to a round of finger-pointing over the cause of the growing gap. Kati Haycock, director of the Education Trust, a nonprofit group that advocates for disadvantaged students, said the numbers nspoke of "a frightening sort of educational Darwinism," adding, "It would appear that in a deeply misguided response to demands for higher achievement, schools are focusing their efforts and resources on those students most likely to succeed while neglecting the students who most need help." Others said the problem was that teachers had failed to learn the best ways to teach reading. Two-thirds of students tested fell below the level the federal government considers proficient, and 37 percent fell below even basic knowledge of reading, meaning they could read little beyond simple words and sentences and could not draw conclusions from what they read. The gap between the very top and the very bottom levels widened in all racial and ethnic groups. The wide gap that has received the most attention in recent years between black and white students remained about the same. Federal education officials called the scores disturbing and a sign that education colleges were not imparting the latest ways to teach reading. National reports show plenty of evidence about the best methods, they said, but in the field, educators are still warring between whole language and phonics, and the proven methods are not filtering down to those who need them most. The best method, several researchers and national panels have said, is neither pure whole language nor pure phonics but more of a hybrid, which would emphasize teaching children to decode the meaning of words. "Although we talk about reform, not all the classrooms of America are seeing this reform," said Marilyn Whirry, a teacher in California and a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees the test. This latest administration of the test, which is generally considered the most accurate measure of student progress, was ordered by the Clinton administration amid concern about a need to increase the number of students who can read by the end of third grade. That is when classroom priorities flip: students stop learning how to read and begin needing to read to learn other subjects. The test was taken by a representative sample of 8,000 students in 40 states. It required students to read passages from books and magazines fourth graders might read. Students answered multiple choice questions and wrote answers that varied in length from a paragraph to a page. The Department of Education reports the scores on a scale of 0 to 500 and by achievement levels: below basic, basic, proficient or advanced. The average score in 2000 was 217, the same as in 1992. The results add weight to the theory that the raw materials for life came from space. "Our results suggest that the notion of organic compounds coming from outer space can't be ruled out because of the severity of the impact event," said Jennifer Blank of the University of California, Berkeley. Blank and her colleagues presented their findings at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Diego. New science The researchers shot a can-sized bullet on to a coin-sized metal target containing a droplet of water mixed with amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. To date, more than seventy varieties of amino acids have been found in meteorites and some in interstellar dust and gas clouds. It was observed that not only did a good fraction of the amino acids survive the collision, many had been polymerised into chains of two, three and four amino acids, so-called peptides, the first stage of building proteins. What is more, freezing the target to mimic an icy comet actually increased the survival rate of the amino acids. Oblique impact The test was designed to simulate the type of impact that would have been frequent during Earth's early history, some four billion years ago, when rocky, icy debris in our Solar System accumulated to form planets. During this violent time, much of the debris would have resembled comets - dirty snowballs thought to be mostly slushy water surrounding a rocky core - slamming into Earth at velocities greater than 25 km per second (16 miles per second). The severity of the laboratory test was equivalent to an oblique collision with the rocky surface of the Earth - a comet coming in at an angle of less than 25 degrees from the horizon, rather than head on (perpendicular to the Earth's surface). "At very low angles, we think that some water-ice from the comet would remain intact as a liquid puddle concentrated with organic molecules, ideal for the development of life," Blank said. "This impact scenario provides the three ingredients believed necessary for life: liquid water, organic material and energy," she added. Though it has been estimated that in Earth's early history only a few percent of comets or asteroids arrived at low enough angles, the bombardment would have been heavy enough to deliver a significant amount of intact organic material and water, Blank said. The next hitch-hikers she plans to subject to a shock test are bacterial spores, which some have proposed arrived on Earth via comets to jump-start evolution.

In fact, depending on your ability to suspend disbelief, it may have more than one ghost. Renvyle, the former home of the Gogarty family, has a colourful history. Burned down by Republican sympathisers in the early part of the century and subsequently rebuilt, its guests have included W.B. Yeats, who stayed there as a guest of Oliver St John Gogarty and conducted a number of seances on the premises; at one time he believed himself to be in contact with the ghost of a dead child. Subsequently, guests complained of a presence in Room 27 of the Renvyle House Hotel; one female guest testified that she was watched by the spectral figure of a man while putting on her make-up. I know all this because Hans Holzer said so and he should know. Holzer, a New Yorkbased ghost-hunter, arrived in Ireland in 1965 to write a study of Irish spectres, eventually published under the title The Lively Ghosts of Ireland. World leaders immediately denied the charges, calling the U.S. allegations, "paranoid delusions of non-grandeur." "They can deny it, but from carbon dioxide emissions to Internet privacy standards, these internationals appear to be taking a rather myopic 'world view,' instead of stepping back and looking at the broader American economic view," said U.S President George W. Bush. "These people have to recognize that there is an entire United States community out there beyond their borders." If this troubling trend continues, Bush warned, the United States will be forced to "take its ball and go home." Asked exactly what ball he was referring to, Bush replied: "It's big and blue and we all live on it." While evidence supporting the allegations appears to be damning, world leaders insisted the United States has misunderstood. On the tiny Pacific atoll of Kiribati, which is threatened by rising seas, government official Baranika Etuati insisted his recent remark to Reuters that, 'It is a terrible economic problem, it is our very survival," referred to U.S. economy. "What else would I be referring to?" he asked bewilderingly. So have many commentators who are refusing to come to terms with some very obvious facts. Once you blow away the fog, you can see that if anyone should be protesting right now, it is American citizens against their own government. Number one: the collision between the US spy plane and the Chinese jet occurred along Chinas border. Think about that and you can understand why China is so unhappy. Now, the US claims it was in "international airspace," but backs up this claim with a rule arrived at unilaterally by the US government and accepted by no one else. The US makes up rules to justify its behavior, rules that US does not accept if applied against US territory. The space where the collision occurred is normally used to facilitate commerce, not hostile military activities. But in US foreign policy, there is a presumption that the whole world is a playground for the US government to do what it wants. Number two: the US plane was a spy plane. Say it three times: it was a spy plane. It was not a commercial airliner. Hence it is preposterous for the US to say that a spy plane landing in Chinese territory is somehow sovereign property. The international law on this subject applies to civil aviation. The US spy plane was seeking to intercept communications and rip off information for US military advantage, probably at the behest of Chinas unfriendly neighbors. This makes it an aggressor against China, just as the US considers any attempt to spy on us to be an aggression and evidence of hostility. Number three: the US spy plane landed at a Chinese military airport. The US crew never asked permission to do so. Imagine what the US would do if a Chinese spy plane were zipping around outside Virginia, became entangled with US jets, and then landed at a US base. The US would not say: "Sorry, guys, about interrupting your spy mission. Thanks for visiting our military base and come back soon." Number four: the Chinese pilot is dead. The US crew is not. Also still dead are the three Chinese journalists who died when the US bombed the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia in 1999. No US soldiers died in that incident either. The carnage is beginning to mount, and, no surprise, that at some point the Chinese decide theyre not going to take it anymore. How long can one country be subjected to murderous attacks from the US before it begins to complain? But if they do complain, this is decried in the US as "nationalism." Number five: there is no mystery about how the US treats such cases. In 1976, a Soviet MIG carrying a defector landed in Japan. The Soviets demanded the plane back. The US complied after taking the entire thing apart. It was sent back to Moscow in packing crates. On another occasion in the 1970s, the US secretly tried to raise a Soviet submarine from the ocean. We use any means possible to obtain military equipment from potentially hostile nations. So turnabout is fair play. Number Six: the US spy plane was not an innocent victim. No one can say for sure how the collision occurred, but it seems obvious that the US version of events a spy plane minding its own business gets bumped by a Chinese jet isnt true. This was a case of the kind of cat-and-mouse that cars play on highways all the time. If it turns out that the US is wholly to blame, it wouldnt be the first time. A couple of years ago, American fighter pilots cut ski cables in Italy, killing 20 civilians with their recklessness. And just recently, show-offs and goof-offs cruising the world in a submarine sunk a Japanese school boat, killing nine, four of whom were 17-year-old kids. Number Seven: the US has fulminated for years about supposed spying by China against the US. Remember the Cox Report? For all of its bluster, it never went so far as to accuse China of flying spy planes around our borders. But it turns out that the US regards such activity as routine and justifiable, if directed against other countries. The message is obvious: the US can do whatever it wants with its military, but believes itself exempt from the very laws it wants to apply to others. This attitude engenders hatred around the world. Though no one in the US cares to remember, the Chinese have not forgotten the US role in the so-called Opium Wars. In this 19th-century drug war, military force was used to addict the Chinese to drugs so as to create customers for opium. Nor have they forgotten the Boxer Rebellion, when US troops in pursuit of continuing economic control burned and looted the ancient imperial compound. Nor, to take more recent examples, have they forgotten the US threatening them twice in the 1950s with nuclear annihilation for responding to huge Taiwanese troop movements to the islands of Quemoy and Matsu near the mainland. Gray Davis of woefully mismanaging the emergency. While officials vowed that the largest utility bankruptcy in U.S. history would not turn the lights off for the 13 million Californians Pacific Gas Electric serves, it threw a new question mark over the state's ability to get through the summer without more power blackouts. The bankruptcy filing came just one day after Davis outlined a bailout strategy designed to help the cash-strapped utility back to its feet after months of bleeding money thanks to California's botched 1996 power deregulation law. Pacific Gas Electric blamed Davis for forcing it into bankruptcy, saying his plan to save it was unacceptable and charging that in the last three weeks the governor had only bothered to hold one face-to-face meeting to bargain directly with the utility. "The regulatory and political processes have failed us, and now we are turning to the court,'' Robert Glynn, chairman of Pacific Gas Electric, said in a statement. Davis reacted angrily, saying the massive utility had ''dishonored itself'' by asking for bankruptcy protection. "PGE was not pushed into bankruptcy but plunged themselves into bankruptcy for their own strategic advantage -- not the best interests of the people of California,'' Davis said. Analysts said the filing marked the biggest utility bankruptcy in U.S. history and could throw a wrench into Davis' efforts to resolve the power crunch hobbling the nation's most populous state. At the bakery, Gore meets up with his running mate, Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn. The Sunshine State is so critical to his victory, Gore earlier in the year had thought about picking Florida's Democratic senator, Bob Graham, as his running mate. Instead he went with Lieberman, who has demographic pluses as well: an Orthodox Jew is a big hit in southern Florida. The two are offered small Cuban coffees in teeny plastic sample cups. "L'chaim," Gore says to Lieberman. "That's good. That feels like eight hours of sleep," Gore says, downing his coffee. He's been going for more than thirty hours now. Bush finished up his campaigning Monday night with an airport rally in Austin, and then it would be bedtime. Bush likes sleep. He hits the sack by 9:30 p.m. He carried a down pillow nicknamed "pilly" with him on the campaign trail. "Well, it's almost 5:30 a.m. Texas time, and George W. Bush is STILL asleep and I'm still speaking to people HERE IN FLORIDA!!" Gore says. The crowd again goes wild. Soon enough, Gore and Lieberman leave the Tampa rally, head to the airport, and fly to Tennessee to watch the returns. Now it's in the hands of the people. People like Theresa LePore. LePore, elections supervisor for Palm Beach County, has been awake for three full hours. At 2:30 a.m. she eased herself out of bed. A cosh or a blade can and in some cases they do kill. The underlaying argument here is the same one that the police in the U.S. are trying very had to get people to accept. That is, if someone breaks into your house, pick up the phone and call the police. Then you can pray that the police arraive before the bad guys find you. When I first moved to Sunny, Southern California there was an incident reported in the local paper. An 84 year old man living alone in an apartment was awakened by a noise in is living room. He got up and went to the door to the living room and saw a large man in the process of robbing him. The robber saw him and told him to go back to bed before he got hurt. The old man had an old army 45 hanging from a nail by the door. He took the 45, shot the intruder 3 times and then called the police. The indruder lived. Firearms can and do make a difference. the chance of death is very much increased when guns are involved as oipposed to any other weapon. In the U.S., when the occupant of the house/apartment is armed, it is the intruder who winds up with holes in them. Mostly going to terrorist groups- it is no surprise that the increase in particularly ex-military weapons coincides with a rearming by the dissident republican groups in ireland. The news about Gusinsky’s sale of his package of NTV shares, along with his statement carried by Kommersant-Daily, indicate that what we have before us is a “politics-business” deal so typical of Gusinsky and Berezovsky. That is to say that Gusinsky is selling not an information (news) channel, he is selling an agitation-propaganda resource, the most professional at the given moment. I consider that as an agitation resource, NTV stands in a class by itself. It has no competitors. This is a channel that contrives and sells crises. The current broadcasting strike at NTV demonstrates how crises are to be shaped and sold. For example, they organize a campaign or show that is called “free speech - in danger” and then people are encouraged to come out into the streets to defend — what or whom? To defend a multimillionaire who is precisely squabbling with a multibillionaire over the sale of his shares. Truly a brilliant move! And what is up for sale is precisely that agitation-propaganda function that has been honed to perfection. Or, take for example, how cunningly they threw in the absurd idea about an “expected” power solution to the conflict. Understandably, this is a pure fabrication on the part of “stage director” Gusinsky for the obvious purpose of provoking the authorities to interfere in a commercial dispute, the outcome of which does not concern them at all (the authorities are strong enough to remain indifferent in this matter). Simply, this is an outright provocation addressed to Putin, a provocation in which Yabloko is also participating most likely for the purpose of counting on certain financing within the framework of the overall system of settling accounts in this deal. One must understand that as a result of the Gusinsky-Turner deal, we shall have a professional American TV channel broadcasting in Russian, i.e., we shall have an overt, not a covert American TV channel. This implies that there is an attempt to turn NTV into a key structure in the strategy of applying American pressure on the internal political life in Russia. It goes without saying that such an instrument costs a pretty penny. And I must agree with Gusinsky — such a professional agitation or brainwashing channel is certainly worth more than $200 million. Incidentally, one should not rule out that the strike and the whole line that Kiselyov is pursuing at the TV channel are the result of a taciturn parallel deal between Kiselyov and Turner: an agreement aimed at knocking down the price tag on the deal. Political manipulations with the commercials at NTV, when commercials are turned into alphabet noodle soup between political brainwashing, can lead to the point when advertisers will recall their contracts that were after all signed up with a working TV channel rather than with a political campaign. From the point of view of political technologies, one can only welcome the fact that Russian political propaganda specialists will now have on the domestic market such a professional foreign competitor as the “Turnerized” NTV — an instrument for putting direct and continuous pressure on our internal policies. I welcome this because I consider that professional training of Russian specialists in that field is possible only in a regime of a real conflict. So far, that side is smarter and more professional than the Russian side. I would single out the weakness of the state in that conflict since bureaucracy is playing the main role here. The apparatus has taken the conflict into its hands, and as usual, it is playing its role sloppily. After all, the conflict surfaced as a result of the way the apparatus handled the dispute of property ownership in the information market. Gazprom’s stand reflects a purely bureaucratic apparatus style: it is trying to look after its own interests. It has squeezed out from participating in this conflict both public and professional forces, including other owners in the media market. Apparently, Gazprom also has its own monopolist objectives in this question. The apparatus style allows NTV to score political points in this conflict because the latter is not afraid to call in its support groups. In particular, regional TV broadcasters are compelled to watch how Gazprom’s apparatus game leads to the point where they will encounter a very dangerous competitor in their market. In this sense, I would say that the bureaucratic approach to the conflict without taking note of its purely legal nature and without mobilizing those forces that could back the state on this issue, does damage to the interests of the state itself. Theories have been elaborated to identify the individuals represented by the Rival Poet and the dark Lady. Not one of these theories is supported by the vestige of a shred of testimony that would stand investigation. There has not come down any evidence that Shakspur, of Stratford, knew either the Earl of Southampton, the Earl of Pembroke or Marie Fitton. The truth is that Mr. W. H. was Shakespeare, who was the only begetter of the Sonnets, and the proof of this statement will in due time be forthcoming. It may be well to try and read some of the Sonnets as they stand and endeavour to realise what is the obvious meaning of the printed words. The key to the Sonnets will be found in No. 62. The language in which it is written is explicit and capable of being understood by any ordinary intellect. The writer here states definitely that he is dominated by the sin of self-love; it possesseth his eye, his soul, and every part of him. -Caveat Lector- Why Multiculturalism and Democracy don't mix (Balkans case study) By Steve Sailer In a lifetime of being boggled by the American press, I don't believe I've ever seen anything as baffling as their rote insistence that the last ten years of war in the Balkans were caused by "dictatorship," for which the solutions were "democracy" and "multiculturalism." Folks, democracy is what caused the mess. Multiculturalism works fine ... under a real dictator, like Tito. He had multiethnic Yugoslavia locked down tight, nice and peaceful. But when the inhabitants got more say in their lives, they started killing each other. They wanted democracy. But they knew that to have it, they needed mono-ethnic states. When the old multiethnic Yugoslavia cracked up, the rest of the world recognized the phony borders that Tito had concocted to minimize the size of the Serbian administrative unit within his empire. This left large numbers of Serbs living outside Serbia, where they were exposed to their historic enemies. The great Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn explained it all in The Times of London in 1997: The bloody Yugoslav tragedy has unfolded before our eyes (and is it over yet?) To be sure, blame for it lies with the Communist coterie of Josip Broz Tito, which imposed an arbitrary pattern of internal borders upon the country, trampling on ethnic common sense, and even relocating ethnic masses by force. Yet blame lies also with the venerable community of Western leaders, who -- with an angelic naiveté -- took those false borders seriously, and then hastened at a moment's notice, in a day or two, to recognize the independence of several breakaway republics whose political formation they apparently found to be advantageous. It was these leaders, then, who nudged Yugoslavia toward many grueling years of civil war; and their position, declared as neutral, was by no means such. Yugoslavia, with its seven estranged peoples, was told to fall apart as soon as possible. But Bosnia, with its three estranged peoples and vivid memories of Hitlerite Croatians slaughtering up to a million Serbs, had to remain united at all costs - the particular insistence of the United States Government. Who can explain the disparity of such an approach? [http://www.suc.org/news/world_articles/times082197] Democracy requires trust - that the other members of your democracy won't vote to despoil you. That's utterly lacking in the Balkans, where nobody trusts anybody they aren't related to. And for good reason. Each and every ethnic group has the blood of its neighbors' ancestors on its hands. Democracy also needs a "settled distribution of property." Britain's modern parliamentary system dates from the Glorious Revolution of 1688. This permanently confirmed Henry VIII's theft of the Catholic Church's properties, thus ending 150 years of turmoil. But everyone in the Balkans is convinced that somebody from another ethnic group stole valuable land from his father or grandfather or great-great- great-grandfather. These suspicions are usually accurate. (Of course, everybody conveniently forgets that the land he lives on was usually stolen from somebody else too.) Human beings have a remarkable capacity for forgiving the murder, rape, or enslavement of their forefathers. But not the theft of real estate. As the real estate agents tell you, "They ain't makin' anymore of it." And, along with associated grievances, it doesn't go away. All this was well understood in the West during the century between the Glorious Revolution and the framing of the American Constitution. But it's been forgotten since, because we don't need to worry much about who owns what anymore. You don't have to worry that your house will be handed back to the descendents of the Indians who used to camp there. Your property is secure because the white race decided to steal the vast majority of the land from the red race, and then not worry about it much anymore. That's why our leaders and media couldn't understand what was clear to the peoples of the Balkans: Tito's bogus borders left only two alternatives - redraw the borders or ethnically cleanse them. Instead, we just decided that the Serbs were Evil. So, we had years of carnage in Bosnia until they finally ended up with a de facto three-way partition anyway. Franco Tudjman solved the problem in Croatia by ethnically cleansing all the Serbs. Kosovo was and remains a fiasco. The good news is that, in the northern Balkans, we now are closer to normal (i.e. ethnically-homogenous) nation-states. Slovenia is a nice little European country. Croatia is calming down now that the Serbs are gone. They've at least stopped killing each other in Bosnia now that they have borders of sorts. But in the southern Balkans, the process of redrawing borders and/or ethnically cleansing populations could go on for years. The Montenegrins are restive under Serbian rule. The Albanians are looking to jerry-rig a greater Albania comprised of the

Then you can pray that the police arraive before the bad guys find you. well- the point i was trying to make is not applicable to the US at all- i actually believe that civilians *do* need to arm themselves in america- because of the amount of circulating weapons. but my point is that one has more chance of surviving an attack by an assailant with a blade than an assailant with a gun. of course people can be killed by any weapon but the danger of the weapons is different. i don't agree with the "only call the police and be passive til they arrive" argument at all- but it is different for me here in the UK- i was broken into while i was sitting here at the puter last summer- dude coming in over the roof LOL but the fact is i didn't pause for a second to confront him- never crossed my mind that he would be armed better than me (a climbing axe)- for them to be armed with a gun would have been bizarre in the extreme- the probable result of any actual combat (there wasn't in the end) is more akin to a streetfight than - say- the same example in the US- with defender and assailant armed with guns... there would be no chase- or fight- only ranged weapons firing from a distance. the psychology,the aesthetics of combat is odd. ranged weapons compared with close combat weapons. that is the difference between our countries- more than wether the weapons are deadlier or not. i think it makes a difference to the result of a confrontation. ranged weapons ended the ability of people to face the consequences of their actions- removes the subjectivity of killing. removes the strength and seriousness of death, weakens the meaning of killing a person. it is too easy to kill from distance. empathy is withdrawn, abstracting of the act and compartmentalisation of it is easy. close combat is affecting and prolonged and messy- ranged weapons are clean and as distant emotionally as they are physically. Minnicino The Frankfurt School: Bolshevik Intelligentsi The single, most important organizational component of this conspiracy was a Communist thinktank called the Institute for Social Research (I.S.R.), but popularly known as the Frankfurt School. In the heady days immediately after the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, it was widely believed that proletarian revolution would momentarily sweep out of the Urals into Europe and, ultimately, North America. It did not; the only two attempts at workers' government in the West-- in Munich and Budapest--lasted only months. The Communist International (Comintern) therefore began several operations to determine why this was so. One such was headed by Georg Lukacs, a Hungarian aristocrat, son of one of the Hapsburg Empire's leading bankers. Trained in Germany and already an important literary theorist, Lukacs became a Communist during World War I, writing as he joined the party, "Who will save us from Western civilization?" * * * At its core, the dominant Western ideology maintained that the individual, through the exercise of his or her reason, could discern the Divine Will in an unmediated relationship. What was worse, from Lukacs' standpoint: this reasonable relationship necessarily implied that the individual could and should change the physical universe in pursuit of the Good; that Man should have dominion over Nature, as stated in the Biblical injunction in Genesis. The problem was, that as long as the individual had the belief--or even the hope of the belief--that his or her divine spark of reason could solve the problems facing society, then that society would never reach the state of hopelessness and alienation which Lukacs recognized as the necessary prerequisite for socialist revolution. The task of the Frankfurt School, then, was first, to undermine the Judeo-Christian legacy through an "abolition of culture" (Aufhebung der Kultur in Lukacs' German); and, second, to determine new cultural forms which would increase the alienation of the population, thus creating a "new barbarism." To this task, there gathered in and around the Frankfurt School an incredible assortment of not only Communists, but also non-party socialists, radical phenomenologists, Zionists, renegade Freudians, and at least a few members of a self-identified "cult of Astarte." The variegated membership reflected, to a certain extent, the sponsorship: although the Institute for Social Research started with Comintern support, over the next three decades its sources of funds included various German and American universities, the Rockefeller Foundation, Columbia Broadcasting System, the American Jewish Committee, several American intelligence services, the Office of the U.S. High Commissioner for Germany, the International Labour Organization, and the Hacker Institute, a posh psychiatric clinic in Beverly Hills. * * * Of the other top Institute figures, the political perambulations of Herbert Marcuse are typical. He started as a Communist; became a protege of philosopher Martin Heidegger even as the latter was joining the Nazi Party; coming to America, he worked for the World War II Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and later became the U.S. State Department's top analyst of Soviet policy during the height of the McCarthy period; in the 1960's, he turned again, to become the most important guru of the New Left; and he ended his days helping to found the environmentalist extremist Green Party in West Germany. The invariant is the desire of all parties to answer Lukacs' original question: "Who will save us from Western civilization?" Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin Perhaps the most important, if least-known, of the Frankfurt School's successes was the shaping of the electronic media of radio and television into the powerful instruments of social control which they represent today. This grew out of the work originally done by two men who came to the Institute in the late 1920's, Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin. * * * In essence, Adorno and Benjamin's problem was Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. What s more, Eli Lilly admits that Sarafem has the same active ingredient as Prozac, complete with the same dangerous side effects. Australian-born singer Helen Reddys 1972 hit song I Am Woman has been called a feminist battle hymn. Many a male disc jockey at the time refused to air it until the song became part of the soundtrack to a movie and catapulted to the top of the Billboard charts. Taking a look at the song today, its hard to imagine the furor generated by the lyrics from the lady down under: Oh, yes, I am wise, but its wisdom born of pain. Yes, Ive paid the price, but look how much I gained. If I have to I can do anything. I am strong. I am invincible. I am woman. Nearly three decades since the release of this feminist anthem the lyrics neither threaten nor offend if they ever did but seem to acknowledge pride in feminine strength. As if it needed to be said, historians agree on the significance of women in the building of this nation. The Jamestown settlement, for instance, was a disaster and on the brink of failure until women were added to the new colony. The West was won by men and women working side by side, and the United States triumphed over its enemies in World War II with the help of nearly 500,000 women in the ranks and millions more in the factories. Not surprisingly, women achieved these feats completely unaware that a few days out of each month they were suffering from a mental disorder. Thats right. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the use of Sarafem (fluoxetine) for women suffering from a mental disorder just three or four days a month in the luteal phase or just before the onset of menses. This mental disorder which the American Psychiatric Association (APA) has not yet accepted, but which is listed in the appendix of the APAs Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD. Its a new-and-improved version of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which also has not made it to the hit parade of the official APA list of mental illnesses. The fact that PMDD is listed only in the diagnostic manuals appendix reflects the APAs desire for further research before accepting it as a full-fledged mental disorder. According to the DSM-IV and the FDA, a woman must experience five or more symptoms before the diagnosis can be made. The unofficial mental disorder is said to be characterized by the following symptoms: Markedly depressed mood Marked anxiety Marked affectivity Decreased interest in activities Feeling sad, hopeless or self-deprecating Feeling tense, anxious or on edge Persistent irritability, anger and increased interpersonal conflicts Feeling fatigued, lethargic or lacking in energy Marked changes in appetite A subjective feeling of being overwhelmed or out of control Physical symptoms such as breast tenderness, swelling or bloating. Eli Lilly and Co., the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical company that makes Sarafem, has been marketing the new treatment with such gusto that there are jokes about the company exhibiting obsessive-compulsive disorder. It seems there isnt a magazine to be picked up or a channel to be surfed that isnt running a Sarafem advertisement. These ads show women expressing many things. One TV spot depicts a woman trying to button her slacks and looking angry and agitated. Another scene shows a woman snapping at her husband, Just leave me alone, while still another involves a woman slumped on the couch sobbing. Then there is the slogan: Sarafem More like the woman you are. Lilly reports in its ads that now, Doctors can treat PMDD with Sarafem the first and only prescription medication for PMDD. The ad further states that, Sarafem contains fluoxetine hydrochloride, the same active ingredient found in Prozac. But both Sarafem and Prozac are fluoxetine hydrochloride. According to Laura Miller, marketing associate for Eli Lilly, Fluoxetine hydrochloride is the same active ingredient in Sarafem as in Prozac. Again and again Insight asked, Then is it the same thing? Again and again Miller only repeated that the two identical doses of fluoxetine hydrochloride have the same active ingredient. Miller refused to acknowledge that Sarafem is just Prozac repackaged, or that the pill color was changed from green to feminine pink and lavender to market it for a not-yet-approved mental disorder that never before

WASHINGTON The gun control lobby has just received a stunning setback in a new
article appearing in the spring issue of the Medical Sentinel.
Written by Miguel A. Faria, M.D., the study finds that most gun violence studies of
the past two decades are based on flawed methodology and unduly influenced by
political agendas, leading to biased and incorrect conclusions.
The Medical Sentinel, the official journal of the Association of American Physicians
and Surgeons, argues in effect that many of those who conducted the studies decided
in advance what they wanted to prove, and then were "prejudiced" by that goal. Thus,
Dr. Faria argues, the studies were not objective at all.
The doctor, who is editor in chief of the Sentinel, debunks a number of incorrect,
widely accepted claims "promoted by anti-gun interest groups based on tainted
studies."
Faria's findings are that:
Women in particular are NOT in more danger if they carry or own guns.
The ease of access to or availability of guns is NOT the cause of crime.
Mass killings would NOT be avoided if guns were not available.
And finally, gun violence is NOT the leading accidental cause of death in children.
The health establishment's stated objective in 1979, according to Faria, was "total
eradication of handguns in the United States," and the follow-up studies were
influenced by that objective.
The doctor faults "those in public health with a proclivity toward the promulgation
of preordained research such as the gun and violence research conducted by many
investigators with a gun control agenda and disseminated in the medical journals."
"Much of this information is tainted, result-oriented, and based on what can only be
characterized as poor science," he concluded.

He turns low over the park, skimming above the gray-green grasses and morning mist. Here and there small stands of pencil-thin native slash pine show dark green against the pale grasslands. But it’s the open marshy prairie that we seek, home to the endangered Cape Sable seaside sparrow. Heading south, the pilot searches for a particular point on a transect map, then banks and flies due west. Twenty minutes later we’re on the ground. “Here’s your first spot,” he says over the radio to Stuart Pimm, the conservation biologist seated beside me in the back. In front another biologist, Sonny Bass, gives us the thumbs-up sign. Pimm and I, dressed in olive green flight suits and white helmets, jump into the wet marsh and run a short way from the helicopter. For a moment this seems almost like a scene from Apocalypse Now. The helicopter’s blades whip the air, bending the grasses in a wide swath all around and obliterating every sound except the wap-wap-wap of its rotors. As it peels away, ferrying Bass to the next site a kilometer away, Pimm removes his helmet and turns to me. “Welcome,” he says, his voice rising above the fading roar of the helicopter, “to the front lines of saving biodiversity.” An avuncular researcher from the University of Tennessee, Pimm is not merely being theatrical. Based on his and his colleagues’ calculations, some 50 percent of the world’s flora and fauna could be on a path to extinction within a hundred years. And everything is affected: fish, birds, insects, plants, and mammals. By Pimm’s count 11 percent of birds, or 1,100 species out of the world’s nearly 10,000, are on the edge of extinction; it’s doubtful that the majority of these 1,100 will live much beyond the end of the next century. The picture is not pretty for plants either. A team of respected botanists recently reported that one in eight plants is at risk of becoming extinct. “It’s not just species on islands or in rain forests or just birds or big charismatic mammals,” says Pimm. “It’s everything and it’s everywhere. It’s here in this national park. It is a worldwide epidemic of extinctions.” Such a rate of extinction has occurred only five times since complex life emerged, and each time it was caused by a catastrophic natural disaster. For instance, geologists have found evidence that a meteorite crashed into Earth 65 million years ago, leading to the demise of the dinosaurs. That was the most recent major extinction. Today the Earth is again in extinction’s grip—but the cause has changed. The sixth extinction is not happening because of some external force. It is happening because of us, Homo sapiens, an “exterminator species,” as one scientist has characterized humankind. The collective actions of humans—developing and paving over the landscape, clear-cutting forests, polluting rivers and streams, altering the atmosphere’s protective ozone layer, and populating nearly every place imaginable—are bringing an end to the lives of creatures across the Earth. “I think we must ask ourselves if this is really what we want to do to God’s creation,” says Pimm. “To drive it to extinction? Because extinction really is irreversible; species that go extinct are lost forever. This is not like Jurassic Park. We can’t bring them back.” In Pimm’s eyes people should be stewards of their neighboring species. That’s why he’s here at dawn in the Everglades, fighting to save the life of a little brown-and-white songbird with a smattering of gold feathers above its eyes. Found only in this park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and nearby areas, the Cape Sable sparrow was once fairly common in the Everglades’ hundred square miles [160.9 square kilometers] of prairie lands, which lie adjacent to its better known “river of grass.” In 1992 the sparrow’s population registered a healthy 6,400 individuals. By 1995 the sparrow’s numbers had taken a nosedive: Its population dropped by 60 percent to 2,600. “It was clearly on its way out,” says Pimm, turning to set his helmet on the ground. “And to me that was unconscionable. In a national park of this size [the Everglades encompasses 1.5 million acres] (.6075 million hectares) and in the richest country in the world, species shouldn’t be going extinct because of our actions. These areas, after all, were set up for their protection.” Raising his binoculars, Pimm surveys the surrounding grasses, then cups his ear to listen for the sparrow’s call. “Ahhh, there’s one.
