Bush's niece jailed over drugs


Jeb Bush (r) is running for re-election this autumn

The niece of US President George Bush has been jailed in connection with
drug offences.

Noelle Bush: Did not comply with treatment

Noelle Bush, the daughter of Florida Governor Jeb Bush, broke the terms of a
court-ordered drug treatment programme.
The 24-year-old was arrested in January after fraudulently trying to obtain
a prescription drug to treat anxiety.
She was arrested outside a pharmacy in Tallahassee.
She has been jailed for 72 hours on a charge of contempt of court for
failing to comply with her treatment programme.
It is not clear how she broke the court order.
Jeb Bush, who is running for re-election this autumn, issued a statement
saying how sad the family was, but he added that this was something that
happens to many people trying to recover from addiction.
We know there are thousands of families across Florida who share in this
unfortunate experience with their own children, he said.
The Florida governor is being challenged by the former attorney general,
Janet Reno, in this autumn's elections but it is unlikely this news will
dent his campaign.
If anything, it may generate popular sympathy for a man sometimes seen as
aloof from the real world.

Markets hope the worst is over


A morning bounce in Asia has given investors heart

Share prices around the world have steadied, amid mounting hopes that two
months of sharp declines may be over.
Japan's Nikkei share index closed up 2% at 10,498 points, leading Asia
higher, after Wall Street stocks closed up on Wednesday.
The markets' months of misery
New York Dow:
Down 17.5% from 17 May peak
London FTSE:
Down 20.5% from 15 May peak
Frankfurt Dax:
Down 19.3% from 15 May peak
Paris Cac:
Down 23.1% from 15 May peak
Tokyo Nikkei:
Down 13.2% from 20 May peak
US shares had surged at one point, but the froth came off by the end of the
day - a sign that the mood is still uncertain.
Now, all eyes are on the long list of US corporate results due later in the
day.
US results have been mixed so far, but analysts take comfort from the fact
that investors are starting to pay attention to fundamentals, and may be
shrugging off the gloomy mood of the past few weeks.
Results roster
The main dampener on the market is now the fear that Thursday's earnings
statements will disappoint investors.


Until corporate America cleans up its act or earnings get better, this looks
like a technical bounce

Some of America's biggest hi-tech firms are scheduled to report results,
including Microsoft, eBay, Nortel Networks and Sun Microsystems.
On Wednesday, investors faced a more mixed bag, including Citigroup, Ford,
Boeing, Coca-Cola and IBM.
Although the news was far from uniformly positive, results from Ford,
Coca-Cola and IBM were all cheering.
Companies count
Optimists hope that company results could generally send out a positive
signal, reminding investors that share prices are based on corporate
earnings first and foremost.

Could things be starting to look up?

While the mood in the market has darkened, economic fundamentals have
remained more or less favourable, and companies have tended to report solid
trading conditions.
The markets' somewhat muted response to Wednesday's results - the Dow Jones
index closing just 0.7% higher at 8,534.17 points - was based on the lack of
trust in corporate accounts since the Enron collapse, however.
Until people get their courage back, until corporate America cleans up its
act or earnings get better, this looks like a technical bounce, and
technical bounces have not had any legs in the past, said James Volk of DA
Davidson.
Two months of misery
Major stock markets around the world have now lost up to one-quarter of
their value since the recent peak in mid-May.
Many have plumbed depths well below those hit after 11 September: the FTSE
100 index, for example, has hit lows not seen since the end of 1996.
After 11 September, all major markets plunged, but recovered sharply towards
the end of the year before treading water in the first quarter of 2001.
The recent sharp declines - sparked by the admission that telecom giant
Worldcom had exaggerated its profits - have caused consternation among
policymakers and consumers alike.
Falling share prices generally lead consumers to cut spending, epecially in
the US, and could push the global economy back towards the recession it
flirted with late last year.

The jubilant Israeli intelligence agents caught photographing the attacks on
the World Trade Center were allowed to return to Israel where they divulged
the purpose of their mission on a radio program: Our purpose was to
document the event.
The explosive story of the 5 suspicious Israelis seen celebrating while
filming the attacks on the World Trade Center was first reported nationally
in American Free Press shortly after September
11. ABC News recently reported on this story and added a comment that
deserves attention.
The Forward, a respected Jewish newspaper in New York, reported that at
least two of the men were Israeli intelligence (Mossad) agents. The Israeli
agents were first seen filming the attack on the WTC while kneeling on the
roof of a white van in the parking lot of a New Jersey apartment building
across the river from lower Manhattan.
They seemed to be taking a movie, the resident who noticed them said. The
men were taking video or photos of themselves with the World Trade Center
burning in the background, she said. What struck her were the expressions on
the men's faces. They were like happy, you know . They didn't look shocked
to me. I thought it was very strange, she said.
She found the behavior so suspicious that she wrote down the license plate
number of the van and called the police. The FBI was soon on the scene and a
statewide bulletin was issued on the van.
The van belonged to a Mossad front company called Urban Moving Systems.
Around 4 p. m. on Sept. 11, the van was pulled over, and five Israelis:
Sivan and Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner and Omer Marmari, all
between 22 and 27 years old, were arrested at gunpoint. One had $4,700 in
cash hidden in his sock while another carried two foreign passports. Box
cutters were found in the van.
WE ARE NOT YOUR PROBLEM
According to the police report, one of the men said they had been on the
West Side Highway in Manhattan during the incident - referring to the
World Trade Center attack. Sivan Kurzberg, the driver, said, We are
Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are our problems. The
Palestinians are the problem.
The case was turned over to the FBI's Foreign Counterintelligence Section
because the FBI believed Urban Moving Systems was a cover for an Israeli
intelligence operation, ABC reported.
While the FBI searched the company's Weehawken, N. J., offices, removing
boxes of documents and a dozen computer hard drives, the owner of the
company, Dominic Suter, was allowed to flee the country. When FBI agents
tried to interview Suter a second time they discovered that he had cleared
out of his New Jersey home and fled to Israel.
When ABC reporters visited Urban Moving Systems, it looked as if it had
been shut down in a big hurry. Cell phones were lying around; office phones
were still connected; and the property of dozens of clients remained in the
warehouse.
The Israelis had been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn,
for overstaying their tourist visas and working in the United States
illegally. Two weeks after their arrest, an immigration judge ordered them
to be deported, however, FBI and CIA officials in Washington put a hold on
the case, according to ABC.
The five men were held in detention for more than two months. Some of them
were placed in solitary confinement for 40 days and given as many as seven
lie-detector tests. One of them, Paul Kurzberg, refused to take a
lie-detector test for 10 weeks and then failed it, according to his lawyer.
OUR PURPOSE WAS TO DOCUMENT THE EVENT.
A deal was struck between Israeli and U. S. government officials after 71
days and the five Israelis were put on a plane, and deported to Israel.
The detained Israelis discussed their experience in America on an Israeli
talk show after their return home. One of the men said: The fact of the mat
ter is we are coming from a country that experiences terror daily. Our
purpose was to document the event.

Perverse as it may seem, we should be grateful to the Bush administration
for its recent clumsy efforts to undermine the International Criminal Court
just as it came into existence on July 1. The administration's maladroit use
of the United Nations Security Council to alter the terms of the Treaty of
Rome, the founding document of the Court, should be a wake-up call for all
those committed to building an international system based on a rule of law
and all who care about maintaining the United Nations as a credible
organization.

First, any illusion that the present U.S. administration might have a
smidgeon of respect for international treaties or multilateral co-operation
should be finally dispelled. The disdain of the Americans is palpable;
they'll resort to crude means to wreck any form of international
architecture with which they disagree.

The argument they made in demanding immunity from the ICC -- that this was
simply a way of protecting their peacekeepers -- was a false one, and they
know it. As Paul Heinbecker, Canada's permanent representative to the UN,
pointed out, the United States has all the safeguards it needs --
particularly the fact that the ICC is a jurisdiction of last resort.
This means that if any crime were committed by an American, be it by a
soldier stationed in Bosnia or by the Secretary of Defense in Washington,
then the U.S. justice system -- civilian courts or military tribunals --
would be entitled to prosecute the case. The ICC only comes into play when a
nation state is unwilling or incapable of exercising legal action against an
act of genocide or a crime against humanity, as defined in the treaty.
Unfortunately, this refutation of the Americans' oft-stated objection never
got the attention it deserved; too often, the media bought the false notion
that this was a jurisdictional dispute. The antagonism of Washington's
current rulers toward the ICC, and their reason for disavowing the Clinton
administration's signature on the Rome Treaty, is that they do not want to
be restrained by any limitation on their actions, including compliance with
international criminal law.

What's particularly shocking about this attitude is that it flies in the
face of all President George W. Bush's aims as set out in his campaign
against terrorism. We hear constantly that this a great battle between
forces of good and evil, of justice versus injustice. Yet rather than
embrace a genuine, broadly supported effort to construct a global system of
legal co-operation in investigating, capturing, prosecuting and
incarcerating international criminals including terrorists, the Bush
administration set out to emasculate such an institution.
That was bad enough. But the Americans compounded the damage inflicted on
the international multilateral system by their tactic of holding hostage the
renewal of a peacekeeping mission in the Balkans and subverting the role of
the Security Council. The so-called compromise arrived at by backroom deals
among the permanent five members of the council is frankly a cave-in to U.S.
demands.

And it sets two very dangerous precedents. First is the use of blackmail on
peacekeeping to achieve the purely self-interested objective of one of the
council's permanent members. Second, the compromise acquiesces to the
Security Council's questionable right to amend by interpretation a treaty
arrived at in open discussion by representatives of more than 100 nation
states in a founding convention. The compromise, giving a 12-month hoist to
any application of treaty provisions, abrogates the original intent of the
drafters. It does not protect the integrity of the Rome Statute, as claimed.
Fortunately, that position is not going unchallenged. Our ambassador at the
UN, supported by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister, has
led the fight to preserve the validity of the court. Mr. Heinbecker was able
to obtain an open debate at the council and used that to expose U.S. myths
and mobilize opposition to the original and more blatant initiative to
achieve blanket immunity. It was Canadian diplomacy at its best.
And it must be continued by our seeking to invoke the engagement of the UN
General Assembly on this vital matter. The permanent five members have
sought by a sneaky procedural device in the wording of the compromise
resolution to keep the assembly out of the picture. But this position is not
impregnable; it's imperative that the assembly be seized of both the
inherent threat to future peacekeeping missions and the erosion of the ICC
that the council decision entails.

In fact, there's now an opportunity to institute even further reform. The
time has come to begin working toward the democratization of the Security
Council by insisting that all members be elected. The UN cannot be credible
when its decisions are so dominated by a small,

you entirely, but pay it no mind. I learned the hard way how it's easy to
get baited on this list, and some others, as I'm sure you know. Saba was
never as much an arch enemy as she was a teacher to me in the end, although
I'm sure that's not what was intended by her.

If you want to see the true craziness of the Rockefeller
drug laws just compare the cases of Andre Neverson, a
violent felon currently being hunted for the murder of two
women, and Kenia Tatis, a 32-year-old mother of three who
is serving a mandatory sentence of 15 years to life in
state prison.

Ten years ago Mr. Neverson got into a fight with his
girlfriend outside a medical school in Brooklyn, where she
worked. The woman's uncle came by and saw them fighting.
When he tried to intervene, Mr. Neverson became enraged,
pulled a gun and shot the uncle five times.

The uncle survived. Mr. Neverson served five years in
prison for attempted murder and was released.

Last week he shot his own sister to death, police said, and
then kidnapped and murdered another former girlfriend. He
was still on the loose yesterday.

Kenia Tatis was arrested a few years ago on a charge of
possessing 20 ounces of cocaine. She had never before been
in trouble with the law and insisted she was innocent.
There were no drugs found in her possession when she was
arrested, but she was convicted at a trial in which a woman
testified against her in return for a lighter sentence for
herself.

There is plenty that is wrong with this picture. Andre
Neverson, a mortal threat to anyone he encounters, does
just five years for shooting a man five times, while Kenia
Tatis, a nonviolent narcotics offender with no prior
criminal record, does a staggering 15 years to life.

How about a dose of sanity? After 29 futile and tragic
years, it is time to bring the curtain down on the
institutionalized cruelty of the Rockefeller drug laws.
There is no way to justify sentencing nonviolent low-level
drug offenders to prison terms that are longer than those
served by some killers and rapists.

Two packages of legislative reforms are floating around,
one from Gov. George Pataki and one from the State
Assembly. Neither goes far enough. But with more than
19,000 drug offenders jamming the prisons and draining the
state's resources, it's important to at least get a start
on remedying the worst abuses.

The essential problem with the Rockefeller laws is that the
punishments are both draconian and mandatory. As the
Correctional Association of New York has pointed out, The
penalties apply without regard to the circumstances of the
offense or the individual's character or background.

Major drug dealers are seldom snared in the vast net of
these laws. But tens of thousands of addicts and low-level
peddlers - the vast majority of them black or Hispanic -
have been sent away for long stretches. Judges do not have
the discretion to impose lighter sentences in cases that
warrant them, or to refer offenders to drug treatment
programs as an alternative to incarceration when that is
appropriate.

Both of the current reform proposals would make some
changes in sentencing procedures, with the Assembly package
giving judges substantially more discretion. But neither
package would actually repeal the Rockefeller laws.

The ethnic differentials in the enforcement of the drug
laws are extraordinary. While there is wide use of illegal
drugs across the ethnic spectrum, including among whites,
94 percent of the people doing time for drug offenses in
the state of New York are black or Hispanic.

There is now broad acknowledgment that enactment of such
rigid laws by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and the State
Legislature in 1973 was a wrongheaded approach to the twin
scourges of crime and drug addiction. One of the original
sponsors of the laws, former State Senator John R. Dunne,
who served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Crime and
Corrections in 1973, said on this page a couple of months
ago that he regretted his role in the passage of the
Rockefeller laws, which he described as both ineffective
and wasteful.

New York, he said, now sends more African-American and
Latino men to prison each year than it graduates from its
state colleges and universities.

Governor Pataki and the leaders of the Assembly do not
appear to be closing in on an agreement that would begin to
reform these destructive laws. Another opportunity is
slipping away. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of
Nelson Rockefeller's big mistake.

  On June 6, 2002, Congress began holding hearings on what alleged
mistakes the Federal Bureau of Investigation might have made in preventing
the 9/11 tragedies. The press had a field day, turning over and over its
fifth estate examination of who or what agency could be responsible for the
awful assault against America. Setting culpability is one of the
psychological states that an individual or a country has to go through after
a trauma is experienced.

The Dots

  We were not surprised to soon see that Senator Arlen Magic Bullet
Specter would be the one getting the first sound bite on the evening news.
Feathers ruffled, speaking to the nation's cameras and to FBI director
Robert Mueller, Specter was broadcast saying: It wasn't just a matter of
connecting the dots, there was a virtual blueprint.

  People talk a great deal about connecting the dots, said Rep. Nancy
Pelosi of California, ranking Democrat on the House committee. She felt the
intelligence agencies didn't even see the dots, they didn't understand the
salience of the dots. Of course, we must ask, does anyone in the mainstream
media or government really get it at all?

  The question must be asked, why isn¹t anyone in the national media
talking about the seemingly subtle coincidences turning up in their
wall-to-wall public analysis of terrorism in America?

  Americans have short-term memories. We can be excused. We¹re young.
Our country lacks a legacy of understanding the complex relationships of
political intrigue and religious warfare, which might assist us in these
times. Is it any wonder that Europeans laughed at us in the 1960s, when John
F. Kennedy was killed, as conspiracy theories were quieted? They took it for
granted that the assassination involved more than one person. The
establishment press did not.

  So, here we are, post-9/11, in the midst of al Qaeda's holy war,
allowing the mass media to play their same old games again, with a new
twist. It certainly is amusing to see the attack dogs of the mainstream
media, at least for a few days, critiquing the intelligence services for
not connecting the dots. But wait a second, hasn't it been these same news
reporters who proudly asserted for years that its special brand of
investigative journalism figured out the deeper truths of the John F.
Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy assassinations, and, even, of the Oklahoma
City bombing? While all of these events might involve groups of people, the
underlying theme was, according to these same journalists, that lone nuts
were at the foundation of such things.

  When in America will we understand that to employ the word
conspiracy in context is not a sin, but actually might be a survival
technique we need to learn? It might actually be of benefit if the general
public did not whole-heartedly take everything in from the media without a
bit more critical thinking along lines of analysis that may be seen as too
alternative, in former years.

The Padillas

  Let us examine a couple of recent examples for what we were told, and
for what might lie beneath.

  The Defense and Justice Departments picked June 11th to announce that
on May 8, 2002, in Chicago, the FBI arrested an al Qaeda terror suspect as
he stepped off a plane to begin what was reportedly a scouting mission that
would end with the detonating of a dirty bomb, an explosive that would
scatter radiation. The man known as Abdullah al Muhajir was born Jose
Padilla, in Brooklyn of Puerto Rican heritage, thirty-one years ago.
Pucho, as his Logan Square neighbors called him, because of his chubby
cheeks, moved to Chicago at age 5. By the time he was a teen, he allegedly
told police he was a member of the Latin Disciples street gang. When he was
arrested, he often would use aliases, at least seven of them, including Jose
Alicea, Jose Ortiz and Jose Rivera, and provide police with different dates
of birth. Padilla graduated from street crime on the West Side of Chicago to
more violent incidents in Florida, leading to some juvenile jail time where
he converted to Islam and chang ed his name. From there, the journey has
been as well publicized as the information allows. In 1997 Padilla's mother,
who had moved to Florida, called friends in Chicago to say that her son had
married a Muslim woman and went over there, to the Middle East, I don't
know where, although reportedly, she gave out a Cairo, Egypt address to one
person. Padilla's mother also said her son had joined a cult. Later,
Abdullah al Muhajir left for training in al Qaeda's operations in Pakistan,
came back through Zurich, and tried to get back in the USA at O¹Hare.
Pucho, who still has Jose tattooed on his right arm, waits his faith in

Nick Redfern interviews David Clarke, co-author with Andy Roberts of the
newly released book: Out of the Shadows, published in the UK by Piatkus. The
book is as fascinating as it is controversial and deals with their findings
on the history of UFOs and the British Government.

1. First, Dave, can you relate what prompted you to write Out of the Shadows
and give a brief description of what the book is about?

The book was written in an attempt to go 'back to basics' with government
UFO research in the UK. There has been very little original research done in
that area so we decided to start with 1940 and work forwards, approaching
the subject as would a historian by only using contemporary accounts, both
official and media, and original interviews. The result is a fascinating
insight into what the UK government's real involvement with UFOs has been
and how that connects with the Cold War and beyond.

2. During the course of your research, what was the earliest evidence you
found demonstrating British Government interest in UFOs?

Well there was government interest in the wave of 'phantom airship'
sightings in 1909 and 1913, when Winston Churchill was questioned in
Parliament about a sighting over a dockyard in Kent, but these UFOs were
thought to be German Zeppelin airships involved in spying missions. The
earliest real interest comes from 1941, when radar stations on the south
coast of England picked up a wave of strange objects travelling across the
Channel from the direction of France. As a German invasion was expected,
Fighter Command assumed these were towed gliders and fighters were scrambled
to take a look. When they reached the scene there was nothing to be found.
This happened night after night for several months, and a secret
investigation was launched, at the height of WW2, involving Dr R.V. Jones
who was then head of Scientific Intelligence at the Air Ministry. We got
this story directly from a member of Sir Robert Watson-Watt's radar team who
was at Bawdsey in 1938. He provided us with two hefty files relating to the
investigation. We think this was earliest case of what would later be called
a radar UFO incident.

3. For years there have been rumours of Air Ministry investigations of Foo
Fighters during the Second World War. To what extent have you been able to
validate those rumours and what new material have you uncovered?

In the book we exclusively reveal there was a study of 'foo fighters' but it
was not under that name. WWII aerial phenomena was called 'the thing' or
'the light' by UK aircrews. The study consisted of numerous sighting
reports, including a UFO several hundred feet long seen in two different
locations. It concluded that as these things weren't causing any problems
they should be ignored. The book also includes direct testimony from
aircrew, gleaned from our personal study of the foo-fighter phenomenon
during the 1980s.

4. Your book contains information on the British role in the study of the
ghost-rocket phenomena of 1946. What conclusions did the Government reach
about this, and how deeply were the Secret Services involved?

British involvement in the ghost-rocket saga has never been seriously looked
at until we chanced upon several hitherto unseen files at the PRO. These
detail how much of the Air Ministry were convinced that the 'rockets' were a
real and genuine threat, so much so that two 'secret agents' from MI 10 were
despatched to Sweden to investigate. The conclusion reached by the
government, somewhat reluctantly, but based on evidence, was that the
phenomena had been some form of hysteria based on misperception of natural
objects. But the story of the internal politics of this and how the
conclusions were reached is fascinating.

5. We know the US military investigations of UFOs really began, on a large
scale, at least, following the Kenneth Arnold encounter of June 24, 1947.
How does that compare, time-wise, in the UK?

In the book we reveal that six months before Kenneth Arnold's sighting the
RAF were involved in an operation to intercept a UFO over the East Coast of
England. This was called 'Operation Charlie' and involved an object tracked
by radar over East Anglia, which travelled at speeds in excess of those that
the fastest planes could achieve. Mosquitoes were scrambled on several
occasions and one managed to lock onto the UFO with its airborne radar. The
phrase 'Flying Saucer' had not yet been coined so the RAF called this UFO a
'ghost plane'. We found a radar operator who was involved in the most
dramatic incident, and the pilot of the Mosquito who attempted to intercept
the UFO. We don't know what happened to the 'secret' report on the
operation, but information on the sightings was shared with the Americans.
Captain Ed Ruppelt wrote that the reports of the English 'ghost planes'
featured in the legendary 'Estimate

HINCKLEY: HIT MAN FOR THE SHADOW
GOVERNMENT?What is more dangerous for the future of
our country than a conspiracy to assassinate a president? It is a conspiracy to
manipulate and control what the American people are told by the national news
media. There are scores of unanswered questions surrounding the event of the
afternoon of March 30, 1981. For instance, John Chancellor, eyebrows raised,
informed the viewers of NBC Nightly News that the brother of the man who tried
to kill the president was acquainted with the son of the man who would have
become president if the attack had been successful. As a matter of fact,
Chancellor said in a bewildered tone, Scott Hinckley and Neil Bush had been
scheduled to have dinner together at the home of the vice president's son the
very next night.
And, of course, the engagement had been canceled. . . Then a peculiar
thing happened: The story vanished. To this day, it has never been reported in
the New York Times, Washington Post or many other metropolitan newspapers, never
again mentioned by any of the television news networks, and never noted in news
magazines except for a brief mention in Newsweek, which lumped it with two
ludicrous conspiracy scenarios as if the Bush-Hinckley connection didn't deserve
some sort of explanation.

THE MEDIA MADE IT APPEAR THAT THE ONLY MOTIVATION BEHIND
THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT WAS HINCKLEY'S OBSESSION WITH JODIE
FOSTERBut many other significant facts concerning the Bush and
Hinckley families have remained unexplored and unexplained, in addition to other
matters related to the assassination. For example:
Neil Bush, a landman for Amoco Oil, told Denver reporters he had met
Scott Hinckley at a surprise party at the Bush home January 23, 1981, which was
approximately three weeks after the U.S. Department of Energy had begun what was
termed a "routine audit" of the books of the Vanderbilt Energy Corporation, the
Hinckley oil company.
In an incredible coincidence, on the morning of March 30, three
representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy told Scott Hinckley,
Vanderbilt's vice president of operations, that auditors had uncovered evidence
of pricing violations on crude oil sold by the company from 1977 through 1980.
The auditors announced that the federal government was considering a penalty of
two million dollars. Scott Hinckley reportedly requested "several hours to come
up with an explanation" of the serious overcharges. The meeting ended a little
more than an hour before John Hinckley Jr. shot President Reagan.
Although John Hinckley Sr. was characterized repeatedly by the national
news media as "a strong supporter of President Reagan," no record has been found
of contributions to Reagan. To the contrary, in addition to money given to Bush,
a fellow Texas oilman, as far back as 1970, the senior Hinckley raised funds for
Bush's unsuccessful campaign to wrest the nomination from Reagan. Furthermore,
he and Scott Hinckley separately contributed to John Connally in late 1979 when
Connally was leading the campaign to stop Reagan from gaining the 1980
presidential nomination. The Bush and Hinckley families, of course, would do
better under a Bush presidency than it would under President Reagan.
Available evidence at the time made clear many other connections between
the Bush and Hinckley families. Reported "coincidences" involving the Hinckleys
and the family of H.L. Hunt also remained unexplored. Even the official
government line admitted that the Bush and Hinckley families "maintained social
ties." The deeply troubled Hinckley oil company obviously would fare better
under a president Bush.
The assertion by the media of course, was that the assassination attempt
was nothing more than the senseless act of a deranged drifter who "did it to
impress Jodie Foster." However, that all of these "coincidences" are thoroughly
ignored by the media is also suspicious. It is also essential to understand the
travesty of the trial of John W. Hinckley, presided over by Judge Barrington D.
Parker. In May 2001, Barrington D. Parker was one of the first eleven nominees
for appointment to federal appeals courts by President George W. Bush.

BUSH SR. HAS UNDOUBTEDLY TAUGHT BUSH JR. THE TRICKS OF
THE TRADE But there's more. NBC correspondent Judy Woodruff said
that at least one shot was fired from the hotel, above Reagan's limousine. She
later elaborated, saying a Secret Service agent had fired that shot from the
hotel overhang. Could Reagan's wound have been inflicted by friendly fire? Or,
more ominously, did Woodruff glimpse a bona fide "second gunman" - a la JFK in
Dealey Plaza? Either way, Woodruff's account might explain how a slug managed to
strike Reagan when his limo's bulletproof door stood between him and Hinckley.
Sizing up the Hinckley-Bush nexus, conspiracy researcher John Judge has
theoretically dubbed this "the shot from the Bushy knoll."

 As a seventh grade student, Claire Nelson learned that di(ethylhexyl)adepate (DEHA), considered a carcinogen, is found in plastic wrap. She also learned that the FDA had never studied the effect of microwave cooking on plastic-wrapped food. Claire began to wonder: "Can cancer-causing particles seep into food covered with household plastic wrap while it is being microwaved?"





Three years later, with encouragement from her high school science teacher, Claire set out to test what the 
FDA had not. Although she had an idea for studying the effect of microwave radiation on plastic-wrapped food, she did not have the equipment. Eventually, Jon Wilkes at the National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Arkansas, agreed to help her. The research center, which is affiliated with the FDA, let her use its facilities to perform her experiments, which involved microwaving plastic wrap in virgin olive oil. 


Claire tested four different plastic wraps and "found not just the carcinogens but also xenoestrogen was 
migrating [into the oil]" Xenoestrogens are linked to low sperm counts in men and to breast cancer in women.


Throughout her junior and senior years, Claire made a couple of trips each week to the research center, which 
was 25 miles from her home, to work on her experiment. An article in Options reported that "her analysis found that DEHA was migrating into the oil at between 200 parts and 500 parts per million. The FDA standard is 0.05 parts per billion." Her summarized results have been published in science journals. Claire Nelson received the American Chemical Society's top science prize for students during her junior year and fourth place at the Internationa! l Science and Engineering Fair (Fort Worth, Texas) as a senior. Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Bob Langer has spent 25 years trying to solve the puzzle of drug delivery. Every drug has a desirable therapeutic range. Above it, the drug can be toxic. Below, the medication can be ineffective.

Just how do you get the right dose to a patient at the right time? To find the answer, Langer has customized polymers that allow drugs to seep out into the body, experimented with magnets as a way to control polymer drug release, and worked on patches that slowly pass drugs into the body through the skin. To date, Langer holds 408 patents and has published 711 articles and 13 books. He has also licensed products to more than 75 companies. So when Langer has an idea, it matters. His latest brainchild combines silicon chips with advanced medical-device technology to make drug delivery more intelligent. "This is a paradigm shift," he says. "We're putting pharmacies on a chip." It could also turn out to be big business. The U.S. drug delivery industry produces $38 billion to $40 billion in revenues each year. Mahesh Chaubal, founder of drug-delivery information service Drugdel.com, estimates that the market for computerized delivery systems could be worth $5 billion by 2012, vs. zero today. DRUG WELLS. The concept of a computerized drug-delivery system came to Langer while he was watching a TV program about chip-giant Intel more than 10 years ago. But it wasn't until John Santini arrived as an MIT summer student in 1993 that the project started to take shape. After completing his PhD at MIT, Santini founded MicroCHIPS, a Cambridge (Mass.) startup that's designing chip-based drug-delivery technology. To date, it has attracted two rounds of venture funding totaling $17.25 million. MicroCHIPS' product is a titanium device, about two-thirds the size of a standard pacemaker -- which itself is the size of a box of Chiclets gum. The device would be inserted in a patient's abdomen during an outpatient procedure. Inside is a silicon chip with as many as 400 tiny "wells" where drugs can be stored. Each well is sealed with a thin gold membrane, which prevents the drug from leaking out of the chip. Releasing a unit of the drug involves sending a small electric voltage that dissolves the cap and allows the drug to diffuse into the tissue. MicroCHIPS is working with a major, though still unnamed, pharmaceutical company and plans to have the device in clinical trials within 18 months. It's likely that the device will be used for large-molecule protein drugs, steroids, or horomones. IT NEVER FORGETS. A computerized drug-delivery device has several advantages. First, it allows for precise control of drug release, solving the key problem of delivering too much or not enough. Because it has a powerful chip inside, the device can be preprogrammed to release a prescribed dosage at precise intervals. It also can be manually controlled via a wireless device that looks like a supermarket scanner. A system like MicroCHIPS also solves problems that are inherent in complex, combination drug therapies, where a patient needs to take specific dosages of several drugs at once. An implanted device releases drugs on schedule, eliminating the need for patients to remember to inject or swallow the right meds. Finally, it's feasible: Technologists understand how silicon chips and implanted devices work. Cutting-edge gene therapies, where scientists try to coax the body into producing proteins or hormones to cure disease, are exponentially more complex because it isn't always clear what cascading, harmful effect they might have. SKEPTICAL VIEW. "We're not reinventing the wheel," says Santini. "And that's really important because you don't want a technology where there are eight different new things you have to figure out before you can get a product onto the market. We are building on what has been done in the cardiac area, the wireless area, and the microchip area. We're integrating a lot of known things." Even so, some drug-delivery analysts are skeptical of this approach. why arent there any jobs being created.  AMR the parent

company of American Airlines reported that during the

last quarter ( April-May-June ) that American Airlines

has been losing $250,000 an HOUR.

The United States is a totally bankrupt nation.  This one

is considerably worse than March 1933.  The debt is now

6.11 TRILLION and counting.  This amount is MANY TIMES

OVER the ENTIRE M1 MONEY SUPPLY.  In other words there

is not enough money in circulation to pay the debt.

It's a hopeless situation.  If the Secret Government

doesnt officially declare bankruptcy and create a new

monetary system at once , then you will see a wholesale

breakdown of society.   What will occur then will be

like some of Mel Gibson's early MAD MAX movies.  If

you can recall those.

One option is to START PRINTING MONEY.  That will lead

to total chaos.  I'm sure the Secret Government is

considering that option.  If that starts occurring

you need to get all of your money into real assets.

A morning bounce in Asia has given investors heart

Share prices around the world have steadied, amid mounting hopes that two
months of sharp declines may be over.
Japan's Nikkei share index closed up 2% at 10,498 points, leading Asia
higher, after Wall Street stocks closed up on Wednesday.
The markets' months of misery
New York Dow:
Down 17.5% from 17 May peak
London FTSE:
Down 20.5% from 15 May peak
Frankfurt Dax:
Down 19.3% from 15 May peak
Paris Cac:
Down 23.1% from 15 May peak
Tokyo Nikkei:
Down 13.2% from 20 May peak
US shares had surged at one point, but the froth came off by the end of the
day - a sign that the mood is still uncertain.
Now, all eyes are on the long list of US corporate results due later in the
day.
US results have been mixed so far, but analysts take comfort from the fact
that investors are starting to pay attention to fundamentals, and may be
shrugging off the gloomy mood of the past few weeks.

The main dampener on the market is now the fear that Thursday's earnings
statements will disappoint investors.


Until corporate America cleans up its act or earnings get better, this looks
like a technical bounce

remained more or less favourable, and companies have tended to report solid

The markets' somewhat muted response to Wednesday's results - the Dow Jones
index closing just 0.7% higher at 8,534.17 points - was based on the lack of
trust in corporate accounts since the Enron collapse, however.
Until people get their courage back, until corporate America cleans up its
act or earnings get better, this looks like a technical bounce, and
technical bounces have not had any legs in the past, said James Volk of DA
Davidson.
Two months of misery
Major stock markets around the world have now lost up to one-quarter of
their value since the recent peak in mid-May.
Many have plumbed depths well below those hit after 11 September: the FTSE
100 index, for example, has hit lows not seen since the end of 1996.
After 11 September, all major markets plunged, but recovered sharply towards
the end of the year before treading water in the first quarter of 2001.
The recent sharp declines - sparked by the admission that telecom giant
Worldcom had exaggerated its profits - have caused consternation among
policymakers and consumers alike.
Falling share prices generally lead consumers to cut spending, epecially in
the US, and could push the global economy back towards the recession it
flirted with late last year.

the point that the earths core is in fact some kind of atomic reactor.

Isnt it curious that this idea has been being put forth by such associations

Ousmane Bin Laden and the links of the Islamic Jihad to the formulation of US 
foreign policy during the Cold War and its aftermath.


Prime suspect in the New York and Washington terrorists attacks, branded by the FBI as 
an international terrorist for his role in the African US embassy bombings, Saudi 
born Ousmane bin Laden was recruited during the Soviet-Afghan war ironically under 
the auspices of the CIA, to fight Soviet invaders. 1 In 1979 the largest covert 
operation in the history of the CIA was launched in response to the Soviet invasion 
of Afghanistan in support of the pro-Communist government of Babrak Kamal.2: With the 
active encouragement of the CIA and Pakistan's ISI [Inter Services Intelligence], who 
wanted to turn the Afghan jihad into a global war waged by all Muslim states against 
the Soviet Union, some 35,000 Muslim radicals from 40 Islamic countries joined 
Afghanistan's fight between 1982 and 1992. Tens of thousands more came to study in 
Pakistani madrasahs.

Eventually more than 100,000 foreign Muslim radicals were directly influenced by the 
Afghan jihad.3 The Islamic jihad was supported by the United States and Saudi Arabia 
with a significant part of the funding generated from the Golden Crescent drug trade: 
In March 1985, President Reagan signed National Security Decision Directive 
166,...[which] authorize[d] stepped-up covert military aid to the mujahideen, and it 
made clear that the secret Afghan war had a new goal: to defeat Soviet troops in 
Afghanistan through covert action and encourage a Soviet withdrawal. The new covert 
U.S. assistance began with a dramatic increase in arms supplies -- a steady rise to 
65,000 tons annually by 1987, ... as well as a ceaseless stream of CIA and Pentagon 
specialists who traveled to the secret headquarters of Pakistan's ISI on the main road 
near Rawalpindi, Pakistan. There the CIA specialists met with Pakistani intelligence 
officers to help plan operations for the Afghan rebels.4 The Ce!
 ntral Intelligence Agency (CIA) using Pakistan's military Inter-Services Intelligence 
(ISI) played a key role in training the Mujahideen. In turn, the CIA sponsored 
guerrilla training was integrated with the teachings of Islam:

Predominant themes were that Islam was a complete socio-political ideology, that holy 
Islam was being violated by the atheistic Soviet troops, and that the Islamic people 
of Afghanistan should reassert their independence by overthrowing the leftist Afghan 
regime propped up by Moscow.5 Pakistan's Intelligence Apparatus Pakistan's ISI was 
used as a go-between. The CIA covert support to the jihad operated indirectly 
through the Pakistani ISI, - -i.e. the CIA did not channel its support directly to the 
Mujahideen. In other words, for these covert operations to be successful, Washington 
was careful not to reveal the ultimate objective of the jihad, which consisted in 
destroying the Soviet Union. In the words of CIA's Milton Beardman We didn't train 
Arabs. Yet according to Abdel Monam Saidali, of the Al-aram Center for Strategic 
Studies in Cairo, bin Laden and the Afghan Arabs had been imparted with very 
sophisticated types of training that was allowed to them by the !

CIA's Beardman confirmed, in this regard, that Ousmane bin Laden was not aware of the

the Gulf
War Iraq was also on team. The plan called for an INTERNET backbone
to be
built through Central Asia. My company was working on the peaceful
applications of the technology, we were part of the team that was
designing
the backbone. My company was a subsidiary of NORINCO and GDNT and
NORTEL
based in Guangzhou. We also had a liaison with IMI (Israeli Military
Industries).

You are looking at it from Europe. Two different perspectives and

Beijing provided such a pledge to the United States in 2000 but
officials in
Washington said China is continuing such sales.
The visit by the Israeli parliamentary delegation followed that of an
Israeli
military delegation tour of Chinese army bases. The Israeli military
delegation was said to have included the leading researcher in the
Israel's
military technology and logistics division.

(CNN) -- A new study indicates that glaciers in Alaska are melting faster
than previously thought, providing further evidence of global warming,
researchers said Thursday.

Scientists have long warned that global warming -- when heat-trapping gases
force atmospheric temperatures to rise -- could eventually raise sea levels
to a dangerous point by melting ice sheets and glaciers.

The whole issue of global climate change is important to everyone, said
glacier expert Anthony Arendt of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. The
whole issue of sea-level change affects people who live near the coast quite
directly. Just small changes in sea level can cause very large incursions of
water up along the coast and can destroy valuable property there. It can move
people away from their homes.

Arendt and his colleagues used a technology called laser altimetry to measure
volume changes of 67 Alaskan glaciers over four decades.

Glaciers in Alaska seem to be thinning from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s,
said Arendt, adding that the thinning rate has about doubled between the mid-
1990s and 2001.

We know that the climate has had to change for that to happen, he said.
Whether or not these changes in climate are due to human influences, that's
not for us to say, but it's possible that it is linked to a larger-scale
change in global climate caused by human activity.

A panel of scientists that regularly reports to the United Nations on global
warming issues has projected that sea level will rise between three inches
and about two-and-a-half feet during this century. But glaciers melting
faster than expected could increase that projection.

The study found that the Alaskan glaciers were thinning enough to produce a
sea-level rise of about .14 millimeters per year -- melting almost twice as
fast as the Greenland ice sheet, the researchers said.

The survey, published in the journal Science, relied on an airborne laser and
a satellite-based global positioning system to plot the glaciers' altitudes
and calculate their volume. Comparisons were then made with topographic maps
from years before the 1990-technology was developed, to extrapolate melting
rates back to the 1950s.

The Environmental Protection Agency says the Earth's temperature has risen
about 1 degree Fahrenheit during the past 100 years, most likely because of
global warming.

Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere
through the buildup of greenhouse gases  primarily carbon dioxide, methane,
and nitrous oxide, says a definition posted on the EPA Web site. The heat-
trapping property of these gases is undisputed although uncertainties exist
about exactly how Earth's climate responds to them.

CIA's 'remote viewers': Minority Report's crime-fighting pre-cogs are not just science fiction

In Minority Report, police utilize psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crimes.

Like everyone else in North America -- present and hypothetical future -- I am fascinated by those pre-cogs in Minority Report. Golly, I thought, when the camera first laid eyes on them. Wow. The three ectomorphs floating in the saline-filled tank, hooked up to life support, seeing the future, are a kick-in-the-pants, the money shot in the Spielberg/Cruise thinking person's action film of the summer of 2002.

So how likely is it? Is there precognition, is it possible to travel forward in time and see what's going to happen? Or can you, as the pre-cogs do, too, go backwards and see what actually did happen? Can you harness these skills for policing?

Yes, you can. The CIA is already there. There are pre-cogs already working and they are called psychic spies. Operating in blacked out, secret warehouses nestled in bucolic Virginia industrial parkland, they work for the Department of Defense, the National Security Council and a half dozen other intelligence agencies.

Meet one of them: Dr. David Morehouse, former Army Ranger officer, CIA operative and remote viewer.

"In 1972," he says, "Stanford Research Institute pulled together all the major psychics that they could get temporary security clearances for and could pay, to come in and explore this. And the job of these laser physicists was to take these greatest natural abilities and synthesize these abilities into a protocol under clinical conditions, scientific test conditions and establish a protocol that could be trained, reliable, measurable, credible.

"It took them $50-million and six years of trial and error to develop that protocol. And this is what they came up with: Stages One through Six of co-ordinate remote viewing. The protocol was turned over to the Defense Intelligence Agency in 1982. It was born in a bed of science, managed and governed and washed in a bed of science, and it was used as an intelligence collection technology, with the understanding that it was not 100% accurate, recognizing that it never will be 100% accurate, recognizing that no other intelligence collecting methodologies are 100% accurate, and if any of them were accurate, the others would not exist.

"So remote viewing was developed as one more providing of a picture or pieces of a puzzle. The official Department of Defense definition of remote viewing is 'the learned ability to transcend space and time to view persons, places or things and gather and report intelligence on the same.' "

As Jonathan Marks made clear in his award-winning 1979 book The Search for the Manchurian Candidate, after the Korean War, the CIA went full bore into research and experimentation in mind control, using LSD on unsuspecting civilians, poisoning blacks, prisoners, the mentally disabled and soldiers with various compounds.

In the 1960s, they spiked drinks with LSD at San Francisco parties and whorehouses and hung around to watch the results. One of their long-time operatives, Jim Olson, was given LSD surreptitiously. Not knowing what was happening to him, he threw himself to his death from a hotel window in New York. The first President Bush personally apologized to his widow and children 25 years after the fact.

Morehouse is another of the men formerly involved in espionage and warfare who travel along the seams of the culture, telling fantastic tales. Fifty years old, with a second wife and assistants in tow, this month he pitched up in the University of British Columbia's graduate student basement ballroom to spend a week teaching a handful of people how to do remote viewing.

It would all be easily dismissable -- were Morehouse himself not so completely plausible. Salesmen and sellers of soothing dreams of immortality have been around since the founding of America. Read Frances Trollope's Domestic Manners of the Americans from 1820, and there they are, pricey tonic in hand, and a snappy patter designed to part you from your money.

But Morehouse has a sterling past. Grandson and son of decorated army officers, he was the top cadet commissioned into the regular army in 1979, and served as aide-de-camp for two commanding generals. He was an Airborne Ranger, one of those who are generally thought of as the "Great White Sharks" of the U.S. army. He commanded the army's only separate Airborne Rifle Company, as well as an elite Airborne Ranger Company.

Second in command of the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Morehouse is, like his forebears, highly and variously decorated. He has a military bearing, blonded spikes on his hair, is stocky, well-built and cool-mannered. He

A dedicated group of experienced civilian and military
pilots,  including  combat 
fighter  pilots  and 
commercial airline captains, just finished a marathon 72 hours of  non-stop 
briefings and debate over the current crisis  evolving from 
the  use  of commercial aircraft  as 
cruise  missiles against  the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September
11.



The so-called terrorist attack was in fact a superbly
executed military operation against the United States, requiring
the utmost professional military skill in command, communications and control.
It was flawless in timing, in the choice of selected aircraft to be used as guided
missiles, and in the coordinated delivery of those missiles to their
pre-selected targets.



As a tactical military exercise against two significant
targets  (world  financial center and the citadel  of 
world strategic military planning), the attack, from a psychological  impact 
on the American public, 
equaled  the  Japanese surprise attack on Pearl
Harbor Dec 7, 1941.



The overriding question: If we are at war, who is the enemy?



The  group  determined 
that the enemy  is  within 
the gates,  that  he has infiltrated into  the 
highest  policy-making  positions 
at the Federal level,  and  has 
absolute control,  not  only of the purse strings, but of  the 
troop build-up  and deployment of
our military  forces,  including active, reserve and National Guard
units.



PRELUDE TO PANIC



The 9-11 activity and horrific destruction of US  property 
and  lives was intentionally meant
to trigger  a  psychological 
and  patriotic reaction on the
part  of 
the  US citizens, which is paving
the way for combined UN activity (using  the 
fig leaf of NATO) for striking key 
targets in both the Middle East/ South Asia and the Balkans. The goal continues
to be ultimate destruction of all national sovereignty and establishment of a global
government.



The trigger for the 9-11 activity was the imminent and unstoppable
world-wide financial collapse, which can only be prevented (temporarily) by a
major war, perhaps to become known as WW III. To bring it off (one more time),
martial law will probably be imposed in the United
  States.



In each  of the major wars
of the  20th  century, 
the financial  manipulators
(located in the City of  London  and New 
York City) had placed the US (and much of  the 
Western world) in a monetary expansion mode, followed by  an 
ever-tightening vice of a gigantic credit squeeze.

The jubilant Israeli intelligence agents caught photographing the attacks on
the World Trade Center were allowed to return to Israel where they divulged
the purpose of their mission on a radio program: Our purpose was to
document the event.
The explosive story of the 5 suspicious Israelis seen celebrating while
filming the attacks on the World Trade Center was first reported nationally
in American Free Press shortly after September
11. ABC News recently reported on this story and added a comment that
deserves attention.
The Forward, a respected Jewish newspaper in New York, reported that at
least two of the men were Israeli intelligence (Mossad) agents. The Israeli
agents were first seen filming the attack on the WTC while kneeling on the
roof of a white van in the parking lot of a New Jersey apartment building
across the river from lower Manhattan.
They seemed to be taking a movie, the resident who noticed them said. The
men were taking video or photos of themselves with the World Trade Center
burning in the background, she said. What struck her were the expressions on
the men's faces. They were like happy, you know . They didn't look shocked
to me. I thought it was very strange, she said.
She found the behavior so suspicious that she wrote down the license plate
number of the van and called the police. The FBI was soon on the scene and a
statewide bulletin was issued on the van.
The van belonged to a Mossad front company called Urban Moving Systems.
Around 4 p. m. on Sept. 11, the van was pulled over, and five Israelis:
Sivan and Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner and Omer Marmari, all
between 22 and 27 years old, were arrested at gunpoint. One had $4,700 in
cash hidden in his sock while another carried two foreign passports. Box
cutters were found in the van.
WE ARE NOT YOUR PROBLEM
According to the police report, one of the men said they had been on the
West Side Highway in Manhattan during the incident - referring to the
World Trade Center attack. Sivan Kurzberg, the driver, said, We are
Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are our problems. The
Palestinians are the problem.
The case was turned over to the FBI's Foreign Counterintelligence Section
because the FBI believed Urban Moving Systems was a cover for an Israeli
intelligence operation, ABC reported.
While the FBI searched the company's Weehawken, N. J., offices, removing
boxes of documents and a dozen computer hard drives, the owner of the
company, Dominic Suter, was allowed to flee the country. When FBI agents
tried to interview Suter a second time they discovered that he had cleared
out of his New Jersey home and fled to Israel.
When ABC reporters visited Urban Moving Systems, it looked as if it had
been shut down in a big hurry. Cell phones were lying around; office phones
were still connected; and the property of dozens of clients remained in the
warehouse.
The Israelis had been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn,
for overstaying their tourist visas and working in the United States

The September 11 That Never Was
A summer of anti-American paranoia

GIJON, SPAIN -- IT STARTED AS SOON AS I GOT IN THE
airport taxi on the way to this Spanish coastal city's
annual Semana Negra writers' festival. I was scheduled
to participate in a high-profile public panel
discussion billed as The Hidden Truth Behind
September 11. And it seemed everyone in town had more
or less the same question ready to spring on me. Come
on, what really happened on September 11? my driver
probed as he lit up a piercingly pungent stick of
black tobacco, as though threatening to gas the truth
out of me if necessary. Why was the audio missing
from the videotapes of the planes crashing into the
twin towers?

The next afternoon, as I was being interviewed on a
local cable-TV show, the blond Twinkie host -- usually
concerned with matters no stickier than how to keep a
good paella valenciana fluffy -- boldly asked, Do we
really know who flew those planes?

At least these two admitted that we were talking about
planes. Because it seems, nowadays in Europe, that the
further you move up on the informational food chain,
the more humidly fetid the imagination turns when it
comes to Things American. As I prepared to appear on a
writers' roundtable on the hoity-toitiest of
literature programs on Spanish National Television,
the host told me he expected me to lay out the case in
favor of a new Continental best-seller: The
Frightening Fraud by French author Thierry Meyssan.
Its more descriptive title in Spanish -- The Plane
That Didn't Exist -- reveals that the real fraud is
the book itself. Indeed, the cranky Parisian daily
Libération called the book The Frightening Confidence
Trick . . . a tissue of wild and irresponsible
allegations, entirely without foundation.

I politely told my TV host, gracias, but no gracias,
and wiped off my makeup. No way would I perfume this
untreated sewage squeezed between two covers, no
matter how many guaranteed close-ups. The conspiracy
laid out by Meyssan posits that American Airlines
Flight 77, which killed 189 people when it crashed
into the Pentagon on September 11, just plain didn't
exist. Never mind the hundreds of eyewitnesses, who
were all presumably beguiled by a CIA-projected
hologram. According to Meyssan, the hole in the
Pentagon wall was punched by a rocket fired by an
ultra-right-wing faction of the U.S. government
itself. The goal? A modern-day Reichstag, an excuse to
justify a police state.

(Not having read the book, I can only imagine how the
author disposes of the small detail of how the 200
passengers and the fuselage of the real Flight 77 were
clandestinely disposed of.)

In the U.S., fortunately, this sort of dementia is
adhered to by only tiny clusters of full-time
paranoids who can channel KPFK through their top
molars.

But here in the Old World, from Rome to Paris to
Madrid -- and even out here in the provincial boonies
near the Portuguese border -- this excrement is being
lapped up like one big creamy hot-fudge sundae. And it
has achieved real currency. While our local L.A.
conspiracy king -- Michael Ruppert -- is but a lowly
exLAPD cop currently commanding only his own Web
site, Mr. Meyssan is president of the Voltaire
Network, a respected French think tank whose
left-of-center research projects have, at least until
now, been considered serious and credible. And his
book, like a handful of similar works, is drawing
bigger audiences on the Left Bank than a Jerry Lewis
film festival.

When Allied troops stormed the beaches on D-Day, they headed for Berlin. Nobody knew when -- or whether -- they'd get there, but it was generally understood if the city fell, the German Reich would fall with it. In the war on terror, no correspondingly distinct benchmark for victory exists. That's because we're combating an abstraction.

Had we declared war on Al Qaeda, it might have been possible to define success. However, I'm not the first to point out that "terrorism" is a methodology. It's a way of doing things that justifies violent criminal means by appealing to lofty ends. As that definition covers events ranging from the Boston Tea Party to the LAX shootings, it's clear that any campaign mounted against "terrorism" will likely be a long one. Which brings us to the troubling matter of "dirty bomb suspect" Jose Padilla.

If he can be forever detained by executive order without so much as a hearing before an independent magistrate, so can anybody else.

A small-time criminal who underwent a jailhouse conversion to Islam and changed his name to Abdullah Al Muhajir, he was arrested upon return from South Asia, where he allegedly plotted to build a radioactive weapon. The president subsequently declared him an enemy combatant. He's now in a Navy brig pending the cessation of hostilities, which, as we've seen, aren't about to end anytime soon.

Obviously, the government has a duty to protect the nation from its enemies. This case, however, brings to mind the favorite adage of a former law instructor: "when you change the facts, you change the law" applicable to them.

The other two nominal Americans nabbed thus far in the present conflict, John Walker Lindh and Yaser Esam Hambi, arguably forfeited their claim to citizenship by fighting on behalf of a foreign power. Each was captured by military forces in a combat zone.

When your liberty is insured solely by the goodwill and competence of those in charge, you live in a police state.

Padilla, on the other hand, was born in Brooklyn, raised in Chicago and arrested by civilian authorities at O'Hare Airport. As we're all equal before the law, his legal status is the same as any other citizen's. If he can be forever detained by executive order without so much as a hearing before an independent magistrate, so can anybody else. When your liberty is insured solely by the goodwill and competence of those in charge, you live in a police state.

Because the erosion of rights tends to occur gradually, it's easier seen at a distance. A cabal of Roman Senators, for instance, assassinated Julius Caesar because they feared his growing power. When his successor, Augustus, finally consolidated imperial might, the Senate didn't disband but rather devolved into a ceremonial vestige of the erstwhile Republic. The civil rights of Romans slowly atrophied from inalienable guarantees under the law to mere traditions enjoyed at the pleasure of the emperor.

Meanwhile, conservative critics ask why I would go to bat for this guy and question where my loyalties lie. The answer to the latter inquiry is that they lie with the American Republic and its rule of law. Which is why Padilla matters.

 Amid blindness to hate crimes, something familiar and
 sinister is arising.

 Republic and a senior writer for the Jerusalem Report,
 is the author of At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden:
 A Jew's Search for Hope


 JERUSALEM -- For more than a year, French Jews have been
 targets of hundreds of violent attacks, initiated mostly
 by Muslim immigrants. Synagogues have been burned,
 cemeteries desecrated and Jews beaten on the streets.
 Yet the French government continues to deny that France
 has an anti-Semitism problem.

 This week, the denial syndrome spread to Toronto, where
 skinheads stabbed to death a Jew outside a kosher pizza
 shop. Despite the fact that the ultra-Orthodox victim was
 easily identifiable as a Jew, Toronto police quickly
 announced that the attack didn't appear to be a hate crime.

 The chances of a murderous skinhead wandering around an
 ultra-Orthodox neighborhood without premeditated intent
 to kill are about as likely as an armed Muslim fanatic
 who just happens to open fire at a counter of Israel's
 national airline. The inability of law enforcement
 agencies to discern a motive in the July 4 shooting into
 a crowd of Jews at Los Angeles International Airport by
 a Muslim extremist who hated Jews and accused Israel of
 deliberately infecting Arabs with AIDS is hardly an
 isolated example of stupidity and self-deception. It's
 part of a worldwide pattern of denial in response to
 increasingly lethal Jew-hatred.

 This week's sentencing in Karachi of the killers of
 Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl is a reminder
 of how the pattern of self-deception works. Just before
 he was decapitated, his kidnappers forced him to tell
 the video camera, I am a Jew, my mother is a Jew.
 Yet the media's coverage of Pearl's execution focused on
 Pearl the American journalist, as if his Jewishness were
 incidental to his murder.

 For the last two years, the Arab world has become
 increasingly dominated by government-incited Jew-hatred.
 Holocaust denial is now mainstream, even among Arab
 intellectuals.

 The official press from Egypt to Saudi Arabia--to say
 nothing of Syria and Iraq--publishes the most vile and
 discredited anti-Semitic slanders, like the medieval
 libel accusing Jews of using blood for ritual observance.

 Yet little notice has been paid by the world to the
 astonishing phenomenon of a great civilization debasing
 itself with hatred and lies. Why the tendency to
 downplay Jew-hatred?

 Partly, perhaps, because decent people find the prospect
 of the return of anti-Semitism, a mere half-century
 after Auschwitz, an unbearable thought.

 Many Jews share that reluctance to face the new reality.
 We want to believe that the Holocaust was an aberration,
 that anti-Semitism, at least as a mainstream phenomenon,
 has exhausted itself in shame.

 Many of us have justifiably criticized the Jewish
 community's obsessive focus on the Holocaust, insisting
 that we teach our children the beauty and power of Jewish
 tradition rather than frighten them into a victim identity.
 But while Jews need to be careful about lapsing into
 hysteria and self-pity, something familiar and sinister
 is stirring again, and we'd be fools to ignore it.

 Not coincidentally, the renewal of seemingly random
 anti-Jewish violence is being accompanied by an
 ideological assault against Zionism and Israel. The
 assault is being led by Muslim extremists and
 anti-globalizers and neo-Nazi Holocaust deniers, a
 bizarre coalition uniting far left and far right. And
 the hatred against Israel is beginning to penetrate
 respectable institutions, including universities.

 Criticizing specific Israeli policies is, of course,
 legitimate; self-criticism is an Israeli national pastime.
 But when the United Nations obsessively searches for a
 nonexistent massacre of Palestinians in Jenin while
 systematically ignoring massacres of Israelis, when the
 only country in the corrupt and violent Middle East to
 be singled out for judgment is Israel, when the context
 of Israel's war for survival is ignored and only Israel's
 self-defense is condemned, when the very existence of
 a Jewish state becomes immoral and the only form of
 nationalism considered racist is Zionism--then the line
 is crossed from legitimate criticism to demonization.
 And the ground is prepared for murder.

 Without identifying the illness, we won't be able to treat
 it. Its name is Jew-hatred, even if some insist on calling
 it everything but what it is.
