Re: [darktable-user] How to repair file path
Wow. That was a very UNKIND email, Patrick Shanahan. Can you please stop being a dictator? I can also dictate you to add the most recent answer on top or to give me a solution that doesn’t involve source code, but I don't. I prefer it my way and I have different skill sets than you. If you don't like people doing things another way than you, it's your problem. Helping them find a solution that works form them - THAT is helping. Giving 1 solution that I can't work with and dictate me using that... is NOT helping. I provided my OS: I'm working on a Macbook Air M1. I sent images, but those didn't come through. Not everyone is able to run a script, like me. There must be other ways and I'm looking for those. A string is a series of numbers/letters/symbols, like the one you sent wit l-r. I don't know what it means and where to enter it. That's what I asked: do I have to enter that string or 'sentence' in the searchbox on the folder level where the problem is? A search box is this box with the magnifying glass. I'm sure you know what it is. DT is latest version. Of course having the side car files at the same location is the best option. That was the case and I never changed it. I don't know why I can't see them. When I rightclick, I see these options (see attachement) and when I click on 'search filmroll...' nothing happens. I tried several times. What can I do to make it work? I can also, like Marco suggested, remove the skulls and thumbnails from the library and add the folder from the new location. But what happens with the edits? Re: [darktable-user] Replies not readable ? I don't think so.
Tnx, I read it differently the first few times as in: "you'll be deleted from the list and not to be reading along anymore" but I get it now. Thanks for clarification. Of course I understood the first part about the spam filters and I'll look into it. Hartelijke groet, Hieke van Hoogdalem Van: Andrew Greig Datum: dinsdag 8 februari 2022 om 23:24 Aan: Onderwerp: Re: [darktable-user] Replies not readable ? I don't think so. Hi Heike, Jean Luc was not threatening you, and of course you have committed no crime. But I think that you misunderstood what he meant. when a spam filter is applied to a message (by your email service) it normally gives you the opportunity to correct it. In my email client "Thunderbird" suspected spam is flagged with a fire symbol. If it is not spam I click on that symbol to toggle it off, and the message is no longer considered spam. If I leave it marked as spam my email client will "learn" to mark all future messages from that sender as spam, and eventually it will filter them out so that you are no longer bothered by them. In Jean Lucs words, you will no longer be able to read them. That is of course, you open your spam folder and find them there. Then you can correct the spam tag and return the messages to your inbox. That is unless you have set up an auto deletion of spam. If you now read Jean Luc's words again in the light of this explanation, they will not be so bad. This mailing list delivers all over the world, and many messages need careful reading because they may be in a language which is not their first language, so some grace is needed. Heaven forbid that I should try to navigate an email list in my Schoolboy French, it would be very wierd, nest'ce pas? Re: [darktable-user] Mask won't apply
Tnx. I also did that (new instance, adjust exposure slider) but like I said: it effected the whole image. 'First master the basics'… well… if the lines are too harsh, getting rid of those is part of the basics as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise it doesn't look like the masks aren't being mastered at all. So yes, I get those basics, but like I said before: I don't get this to be applied to my mask. That's why I asked about the blend mode before. I tried the feather and blur and so on, but it doesn't work, because it starts wrong with everything being applied to the complete image. I hope the following explanation may help you. I often want to brighten or darken a section of an image, similar to how I would have dodged or burned in a traditional film darkroom. To achieve this with a digital image I make a new instance of exposure and adjust the exposure slider (sometimes I deliberately overdo the adjustment and will return to it later). This adjustment moves the whole of the image's exposure, but then I use the drawn mask option which looks like a crayon. I then often use the add path option to very roughly select the area I want to apply the effect to. The transition will be harsh and obvious. To fix this problem I then move the feather radius and blurring radius sliders about a third of the way to the right (amount may vary between images). This feathering and blurring then creates an invisible transition. I return to the exposure slider and fine turn the strength of the effect. Forget the blend mode options until you have mastered basic masking techniques. Re: [darktable-user] How to add more black
Well yes… Of course I mean when editing, I always put the indicators on and off for checking. Of course I don't have them on all the time, that's very f*ing annoying and unworkable Tnx guys for all the options. I'll explore them. I love the fact that dt can do so much, but I also hate it. Too many choices and too technical. But it's free so I'll work with it Just so you know: I always try to figure things out myself with the manual or Google or YouTube. The manual is unreadable in a lot of cases – if you're not a technician, you don't understand what it says even if you're used to editing with different programmes and are computer savvy. And YouTube doesn't always have tutorials on what I'm looking for. (I already watched hours of tutorials btw.) Or the videos are using old interfaces. So… I only come here when I don't find the answer elsewhere. I am hopefully not going to start something which I may regret, but working to clipping indicators is like painting by numbers. I used to do the same, but I now only occasionally turn them on. The clipping indicators can be adjusted to your own personal preferences, so their worth is all relative. The look is more important. Occasionally I will turn them on to see when the blacks or whites have reached my personally set clipping thresholds, but only rarely. My first thing to look at is can the M1 see the files on the Windows box? Using a standard file manager/browser on the M1 navigate to the Windows box and the location of the image files. Attempt to view them in a file viewer. If that doesn't work then dt won't be able to work with the files either. Best then to consult the experts in that area before attempting again with dt. [darktable-user] Re: How to transfer tags from Windows to Mac and how to add files from external disk
Okay I found the external device (under the picto with / behind it). But I can’t select the folder I need. All I can do is hover over the folder names. Van: Hieke van Hoogdalem Datum: maandag 13 december 2021 om 23:10 Aan: Onderwerp: How to transfer tags from Windows to Mac and how to add files from external disk Hi y’all, I’m transferring my digital life from a Windows 10 machine to a Macbook, it’s my first Apple device ever so I’m new to this all. I installed darktable but wasn’t able to import files from my external disk; it’s not being recognized. I already searched under ‘+ locations’. I always work from external disks, because internal memory gets full too soon and I don’t want to have to change directory files in darktable. The import interface looks really different…? I created tags in darktable on Windows. Will they be transferred as information in the sidecar files from the photos that have those tags? And if not, how do I get them into my new laptop and attached to the correct photos easily? [darktable-user] Folders don't open anymore
Hi all, Please see the attached file. Yesterday I was working on some photos in the folder that starts with the underscore. Today I opened Darktable and the other folder was shown. I clicked on the other one and got this error. When I clicked on the folder that opened during startup, I got the same error. I didn't remove images and I can still reach them on my hard disk. I already closed and reopend DT. How can I make sure it works in DT again? Warm regards, Hieke darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
[darktable-user] Crop isn't being saved and other crop bugs
Hey there, I have a question / bug report for Windows 10, dt version 3.2.1. So... I just got darktable after reading a lot of positive reviews and comparisons. I started yesterday and I was happy with it (rating, view only X stars in the viewport etc.), until my first real editing started. My first step is always the cropping. (BTW: I have loads of experience with several editors for both photos and films, I use Photoshop Elements for almost 15 years now, alongside other editors. I also developed websites, so I'm quite computer savvy. I'm not a programmer though.) So here's the issue. MAIN PROBLEM: the crop function behaves differently every time. (I read the manual on this, but it doesn't help.) When cropping an image, several problems occur: 1. no cropping grid/handles are being shown 2. automatic crop yes/no doesn't accept no as an answer 3. the chosen grid (in my case: rule of thirds) doesn't show The software isn't stable. When I retry, it's always different: sometimes the rule of thirds shows up, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I can crop and it's being saved (after waiting several minutes) but most of the time the crop isn't applied. It shows in the history stack though... Most of the time I get the grid and handles to be shown when I go to Lighttable > back to Darkroom > select square > select freehand. Then I can finally do what I want, but nothing is being saved. I tried several times on the same photo. And on others too. Is there anything I can do to make it work? Looking into other functions and learning DT doesn't make sense to me if I can't crop firrst. I really hope you can help me out! I started a thread on it on Github too: https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/6448. I thought that was the forum for DT (but I guess I'm wrong).
