[datameet] Details on allocation of reserved SC seats in UP GPs

2022-03-23 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could clarify/share with me a source on the
details of the allocation of GP Pradhan seats to SC reservation. I have
seen that the system after 2021 changed to one where a rotation was put in
place but I haven't been able to find out the details of it and the
Panchayati Raj Act was also quite vague about it. I would also love to know
how the allocation worked prior to the switch to the rotation system as
mentioned here
.

Was it just allocated to the GPs with the highest share of SCs within a
subdistrict without rotation? Any details help even if you don't have a
source in mind! Thank you in advance!

Best,
Eduardo

[datameet] Election results for UP Gram Panchayats

2022-01-07 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

Happy New Year!

I was wondering if anyone had seen the election results for UP Gram
Panchayats (either for the last election or the previous one). The main
things I need are the vote shares of the winner and runner-up and their
political parties. If the names of the candidates are also available then
that is another plus! I found some files on the UP election authority
website but they only had the name of the winning candidate and not their
party. They were also in Hindi although I'm sure there's a way to translate
those to English. Thank you in advance!

Best,

Eduardo

[datameet] Measuring BJP propaganda/advertising

2021-11-08 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had good ideas on how to get data on being
exposed to more BJP propaganda or advertising during elections. Is there
perhaps data on advertising expenditures by locality or distribution of
important local headquarters that predict a higher exposure to propaganda
from those that live nearby? Any ideas are welcome, thank you in advance!

Best,

Eduardo

[datameet] District-level government expenditure on SC welfare programs

2021-09-22 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi,

I am trying to get data on government budgets and/or expenditure at the
district level. Especially, I am interested in the amount allocated to
SC/ST welfare programs. I know similar data exists at the state level and
it is what Economist Rohini Pande uses in her 2003 paper titled "Can
Mandated Political Representation Provide Disadvantaged Minorities Policy
Influence? Theory and Evidence from India". To illustrate what I'm looking
for, I'd like to get similar data but at a level smaller than states.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best,
Eduardo

2021-08-17 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi Vaishnavi,

Have you tried getting the data through wayback machine? I can see here
that someone took a snapshot of the website in 2018 and it looks probably
like the one you were looking for. With any luck the datasets are also
saved there. Here's the link to the 2018 snapshot, you can also see if
there is a more recent
one:
https://web.archive.org/web/20180401174830/http://www.transparentchennai.com/
Hope this helps!

[datameet] NIC crosswalks

2021-07-20 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

Has anyone compiled crosswalks for the NIC codes across the NSS waves. I'm
using the "thick" rounds (38, 43, 50, 55, 61, 66) so that goes through NIC
1970, NIC 1987, NIC 1998, and NIC 2004. Someone else had posted here
 the
crosswalk from 98 to 04 in excel but online I can only find PDFs of the
others. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Best,

Eduardo

[datameet] Trouble reading Indian Districts Database's files

2021-01-31 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

Have any of you successfully read the .data files in the Indian Districts
Database (http://vanneman.umd.edu/districts/files/index.html)? I tried
reading them in R as ASCII and elsewhere as text files or tab separated
files and all I got was a single column of about 150K rows with what looked
like the data but with no sense of which column corresponds to which
variable. Also, the SAS command files are not available (links broken).

Thank you in advance!

Best,
Eduardo

This is awesome, thank you!! Also thank you for the notes on using R for
SAS, I had previously gone the very painful route of doing it through Stata

[datameet] District-level historical census data

2020-11-13 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

I am aware that the last three censuses are availiable online even at the
village/town level for most questions but what about for the previous
censuses? Are you aware of census data being digitized at least at the
district level? Most important to me is get the distribution by religion
and whatever categorization of caste is available (whether it be SC/ST/OBC
or specific jatis for the earlier censuses).

Alternatively, do you know of a repository with the census data perhaps for
the earlier ones. I have found some here and there with varying degrees of
completeness and I was wondering if any of you have come across a more
comprehensive collection.

Thank you very much in advance!

Best,

Eduardo

[datameet] Voting records for state high courts or supreme court decisions

2020-10-04 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has seen available records of supreme court or
state high court decisions. Ideally, I would like to see how each judge
voted in a case.

Thank you in advance!

Best,
Eduardo

Hi Kishore,

I guess there might not be many instances but maybe I could use absenteeism as
a potential proxy for wanting to vote against the party. Thank you for this
information, it is very useful!

[datameet] Data in English on discussions in State Assemblies

2020-09-28 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hello,

I have found that there is no record of voting by MLA since most votes are
done by voice. However, is there any proxy you have found such as using
transcripts of meetings where specific laws/motions were discussed? Are
such transcripts available in English by any chance, even if it is only for
some states?

I found, for instance, that someone did this word cloud with text from
debates in some assembly discussion:
https://www.facebook.com/DataDrivenPolicy/photos/a.1680520442182299.1073741826.1669243013310042/1683054585262218/?type=3=1

How I could get that sort of raw data for state assemblies is my question.

Thank you in advance for your help and attention.

Best,

Eduardo

[datameet] Data on voting/opinions of the members of State Legislative Assemblies

2020-09-28 Thread Eduardo Campillo Betancourt
Hello,

I am looking for any data on how people in state assemblies voted on
specific bills or laws. I have found that roll call voting does not happen
in India and that there might not be data on how specific members of the
legislative assemblies voted. However, are you aware of any potential proxy
at the member level? For instance, perhaps text analysis of transcripts of
the assembly discussions. Or do you know if there are such transcripts
themselves for me to scrape/analyze?

Additionally, I know there is pretty good data on affidavits of candidates
to parliament but is there such data on candidates to the state assemblies
as well?

Thank you in advance for your help and attention!

Best,
Eduardo
