This variable is used in the rp-pppoe.so plugin. Mklibs cannot know

If there is no way to display the whole comment, I suggest we discourage

gtranslator gobbles whitespace in comments, which is also pretty annoying.

In fact they are not sorted at all. I tried something, but it did not
work. This list must be sorted at build time (because LC_COLLATE infos

 Exactly my problem: it seems that at least the templates are not ready for
 plural forms (while they have not been needed recently) and so it makes no
 sense to introduce anything on my side.

Right.
Steve told that removing PACKAGE_COUNT is an option if it is not that
useful. This is true, but maybe in this specific case you could rewrite
the translated text to something like:
  The Debian package management tool, apt, is now configured, and can
  install any package. Current number of packages is ${PACKAGE_COUNT}.

[...]
 According to gettext manual, ngettext should be supported for shell
 scripts, so it should be a matter of replacing the functions where it is
 needed, wouldn't it?

No, because gettext is not called when displaying templates. Packages
contain a collection of English messages and their translations into
various languages. Debconf internally stores these messages in a hash
langcode = 'translated message', and prints each message according to
user's preferences.
Someone familiar with plural forms handling should have a look at this
problem, it seems to be very hard. The debconf protocol section in
debconf-devel(7) describes how config scripts communicate with debconf.

 easier to rephrase in this case. Like already said, russian language has
 _three_ singular/plural forms for different numbers, so your hack will not
 please us either, as it only provides two forms, as far as I can tell...

Joey's hack should work because it calls ngettext as requested, and do
not rely on debconf itself. It needs to be polished, will propose a patch

 Right, I don't understand how the multiple plural forms should look in
 the po file, but it should indeed support it.

Gettext doc in unstable tells that $... bashism is deprecated, and
recommands direct calls to gettext commands from the shell. I wrote in
the templates file
  The Debian package management tool, apt, is now configured, and can
  install any of ${PACKAGE_STR}.
and in apt-setup
  PACKAGE_STR=$(ngettext \${PACKAGE_COUNT} package \${PACKAGE_COUNT} packages
$PACKAGE_COUNT)
  db_subst apt-setup/another PACKAGE_STR $PACKAGE_STR
  db_subst apt-setup/another PACKAGE_COUNT $PACKAGE_COUNT

Then xgettext -L Shell apt-setup prints in the PO file:
  #: ../apt-setup:178
  #, sh-format
  msgid ${PACKAGE_COUNT} package
  msgid_plural ${PACKAGE_COUNT} packages.
  msgstr[0]
  msgstr[1]
Note that arguments must be quoted, otherwise they won't appear in PO files.
Header entry also contains a new line
  Plural-Forms: nplurals=INTEGER; plural=EXPRESSION;\n
According to gettext doc, Russian translators have to replace it by
  Plural-Forms: nplurals=3; plural=(n%10==1  n%100!=11 ? 0 : n%10=2  n%10=4
(n%10010 || n%100=20) ? 1 : 2);\n
and then writes 3 translated forms
  msgstr[0] foo
  msgstr[1] bar
  msgstr[2] baz
to handle those 3 cases.

This is how it should work with gettext 0.13, I am not sure if the testing
version works the same way, and did not finish the patch, so will look at
it again tonight unless someone sends a working patch.

 Now that the translation is complete, it would be nice to be able to

 Debian installer will require bidi and shaping patches. Bidi is a lib
 that can be plugged in. Not exactly sure how it works. but shaping is an
 actual code that must be written from scratch. We
 (http://www.arabeyes.org) have some samples of shaping code (patched Vim
 6.2) that can be studied. it is a simple piece of code to right any way.

Congratulations.
Do you have an estimation of how many hours are needed to translate
everything from scratch? This might be interesting to know, if some
other translators want to add a new language.

As several translators were involved on your side, some identical msgids
have different translations. This is not a big deal, but is easy to fix,
you could get
   http://people.debian.org/~barbier/d-i/l10n/ar/ar.po
and check for #-#-#-#-#-#-# strings, they delimit such msgstrs. You
can then choose the best alternative and fix other packages.

Also Alastair seems very busy these days, maybe someone from arabeyes.org
could try to hack newt, you are the ones who know what to do ;)
Of course we will try to help if we can.

There are conflicts because you have a locally modified version and
someone else did also change this file. See 'Conflicts example'
section in cvs.info.

 I decided to toss the fi.po and copy templates.pot. I'll copy the
 translated strings there manually.

When you have locally modified files, you should not blindly run
'cvs update', but make sure that there will be no such conflicts
by running 'cvs -nq update' first. If there are, backup your
changes:
 $ cvs diff -u fi.po  mychanges
get the new file
 $ rm fi.po
 $ cvs update fi.po
and incorporate your changes (either with the patch command or by hand).

Agreed, and we should also make sure that all modules allow backing up.

 They _may_ be changed without updating the revision date, but shouldn't
 be.

Right, so the 'translators must update debian/changelog' rule may be
replaced by 'translators must update PO-Revision-Date'.

 The only case when the PO-Revision-Date is not changed and which is
 ok this way is when the .po-files get msgmerged with updated templates.

 So, do you say hereby, that this functionality is not needed at all?

Not at all, I am just trying to evaluate its drawbacks. If all PO files
were gathered into a single place as described at the bottom of
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-i18n/2004/debian-i18n-200401/msg00061.html
requiring updates of debian/changelog files would not make sense, so
your script might be very helpful then.
As Steve Langasek told in another thread, you have to balance workload
of translators and maintainers. Maybe someone has to write another
script to report changes within packages in subdirectories since the
last upload, including a) new changelog entries and b) updated PO files.
If you do not make maintainers' life harder, they should have no reason
to refuse to switch to another scheme.

 As much I'd like my script to be useful ;) I don't think that merging
 files and maintaining them is a good idea or better said, a good idea for
 a bunch of translators.

This is an option, but I was referring to this part:
] Mandrake folks define an aliased po module containing all po directories
]http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/CVSROOT/modules

In other words, we might have
  po/anna.po/  - anna/debian/po/
  po/aboot-installer.po - tools/aboot-installer/debian/po
  etc.
so that all PO files are available for translators from the po module,
and they still reside at their usual place.

[...]

 It's kind of tricky to track changes in the source files, as they do not
 have a required date field. The same with changelogs: I could grep for
 translation or \(??\.po\) but they would still be no algorithm for
 finding out from a script, what exactly has been updated. And no, I am not
 writing an English language parser in bash :)

Sorry I was unclear, this script should only:
  a. Look at debian/changelog to find UNRELEASED sections.
  b. Report PO files updated after the last upload.
If it is run from inside a package directory, it displays the
debian/changelog which will be generated by your script. But when run
from top-level debian-installer, it could produce a status report for all
packages, maybe maintainers could find this tool useful and then accept
that translators do not update debian/changelog.

Please note also that very long lists are painful with a text frontend,

 But, maybe, simplifying languagechooser was not the best idea : we
 could keep the current list, with the most common language_COUNTRY
 combinations.

 But, in the same time, add an Other entry for all languages. This
 Other entry would then trigger countrychooser (maybe showing a
 subset of the whole country listwith all *possible* countries,
 according to /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED).

One could also display a question similar to netcfg/confirm_static, ie.
after selecting a language, user is asked whether deduced default values
are right.

 That has potential, something like this:

   Based on your chosen language, the following
   default settings will be used for the install.

   Select an item to configure, or continue:

  Language:English
  Country: United States
  Keyboard:us
  Time Zone:   US/Eastern
  Debian mirror:   http.us.debian.org

   - Continue, using above settings

 Of course d-i doesn't do time zone configs right now, and probably
 shouldn't, and choose-mirror might not be available during
 languagechooser, and so a lot would need to be reorganised to do this.
 It would allow for debian installs with 3-4 keypresses though, if used
 with dhcp and autopartitioning.

My suggestion was much more humble, I was thinking about something like:

Language selected:  English

Based on your chosen language, the following
default settings can be used for the install.
If they are fine, you won't be prompted for them
anymore. Otherwise you will be able to change
these settings during the install.

   Country: United States
   Keyboard:us
   Time Zone:   US/Eastern
   Debian mirror:   http.us.debian.org

Do you accept these settings?
   [*] Yes   [ ] No

 cdebconf seen handling seems to be broken again -- I've preseeded
 debconf with the information that autopartkit/confirm is seen, yet
 autopartkit asks me if I really want to use the automatic partitioning
 tool. (autopartkit does not fset seen false before the question, like
 it used to earlier, so I doubt the bug is there.)

Udpkg (and maybe other tools?) must set debconf/showold (or
DEBCONF_SHOWOLD) to true when reconfiguring packages, and when
this is done, cdebconf can safely set debconf/showold to false
by default.

 Umm, main-menu definitely did this before;

Main-menu calls 'udpkg --configure --force-configure' to force
maintainers scripts to be run, but that's all. Either main-menu
or udpkg must tell cdebconf to display seen questions.

 has somebody broken it?

 In any case, it's simply wrong to set a broken default in cdebconf
 just because other tools are broken, especially when there's no sane
 workaround -- automated installations with the current cdebconf just
 won't work...

Automated installations can set debconf/showold to false.

Sorting is implemented in cdebconf CVS (was Re: Countrychooser commited in CVS)

  I first need to add some sorting in English.and after this, we
  will be thrown in the known problem of translations sorting (which is
  not countrychooser specific, by the way)

 This requires changes in cdebconf, so you should not focus on it now.

Sorting cannot be performed at run-time because locales package is not
installed. Sorting items when building packages is painful because
the needed UTF-8 locales have to be installed. So the only option is
to statically build sorted lists. Thus I implemented a new field in
cdebconf to tell in which order items have to be displayed. Consider
for instance:
  Choices: a, b, c
  Choices-ll.UTF-8: x, y, z
  Indices-ll.UTF-8: 3, 1, 2
The first 2 lines have their usual meaning, ie. 'a' is translated into
'x', 'b' into 'y' and 'c' into 'z'. The Indices field tells that items
must be displayed as z, x, y for this language.
This has been tested on countrychooser with the help of the attached
script;
  $ sort_countries --lang=fr --locale=fr_FR.UTF-8 \
   debian/templates  debian/templates.sorted
Now if templates is replaced by templates.sorted, countries are sorted.

Remaining issues:
  * iso-codes French translation contains commas, which confuses
cdebconf. Other languages have surely the same problem.
  * This script should be split into 2 parts:
  a. print the sorted list (ie $output) into a file sorted.$lang
  b. read sorted.$lang files and add Indices fields.
This way sorted.$lang files could be put under CVS wings and
translators might check that countries are sorted as expected.
Maintainer can run (b) without having locales installed.

Denis
#! /usr/bin/perl -w

use Getopt::Long;
use POSIX;
use locale;

binmode STDIN, ':utf8';
binmode STDOUT, ':utf8';

my $lang = '';
my $locale = '';
GetOptions (lang=s = \$lang, locale=s = \$locale);

die Usage: sort_countries --lang=langcode --locale=locale
unless length($lang)  0  length($locale)  0;
setlocale(LC_ALL, $locale);
my $cnt = 0;
while () {
print;
next unless s/Choices-$lang.UTF-8: //;
chomp;
my @list = split(/, /);
my @block = ();
my $output = '';
for my $country (@list) {
chomp $country;
if ($country =~ m/^\x{00a0}/) {
$cnt++;
push @block, $country. .$cnt;
} else {
$output .= join(\n, sort @block).\n if (@block);
@block = ();
$cnt++;
$output .= $country. .$cnt.\n;
}
}
$output .= join(\n, sort @block).\n if (@block);
$output =~ s/.*? (\d+)$/$1/mg;
$output =~ s/\n/, /g;
$output =~ s/, $//;
print Indices-$lang.UTF-8: $output\n;
}

 Seems to be the only way

 However, in the meantime, the country sorting by region has been added
 by Joey.

For English names only.

 No idea if this changes the proposed scheme. I don't really
 like having sorted.* files in CVS as this loses one advantage we had
 until then : the translations were completely outside the
 package. With this, we somewhat put them again in the package

I am afraid that there is no other solution if you want sorted entries
before the locales package is installed.

I just committed a change in cdebconf/src/frontend.c which might help

can be replaced by commands like
   echo get foo/bar |\

If this works, a more user-friendly approach is to have debconf-set and
debconf-get be symlinks to debconf-communicate, and add few lines to
behave in a different manner according to executable name.

 Won't this make it kind of hard to preseed a debconf db and force some
 questions not to be shown?

On the contrary, this change helps in this area, see #229648.

 I don't know if this is a m68k problem or what, but a fix is just to
 move the comment below the Template: line. See the diff below.

This is a bug in po2debconf.

 I'd go ahead an apply it, but I have no idea what that does to
 translators.

I removed this comment which seemed pretty useless, and moved others
in partman-basicfilesystems and partman-ext3.
Thus partman, partman-basicfilesystems and partman-ext3 should be
uploaded, their templates files are currently corrupted.

 Or it is false
 Another point is if i select high property for the second module,
 cdebconf will show me the module_params question but with by the

 example, i have configured parport_pc: io=0x378 irq=7
 i will have in plip module question plip: io=0x378 irq=7
 but plip can only have parport=X options
 so if the user must have a blank field for plip options

 So i have to create different questions using the same template and the
 solution is db_register

Absolutely.

 Why is this 'Unknown'

 because if we want to create a preconfigured d-i for automatic
 installation, we will just have to add in questions.dat
 Name: ethdetect/module_params/parport_pc
 Template: ethdetect/module_params
 Value:  io=0x378 irq=7

Yes, and where is the problem? I just performed a simple test, and
pre-seeding seems to work as expected, so I still do not see why
there is a problem with these unknown owners.

 This can be easily fixed within rootskel

 how do you do that?
 create an specific template for all modules?, if think it's ugly
 so what is the use of register?

No, all I had in mind is to write
  /usr/bin/debconf-loadtemplate d-i /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.templates
in rootskel/src/lib/debian-installer.d/S20templates, and
  #!/bin/sh
  exec /usr/share/debconf/frontend -o d-i /usr/bin/main-menu
in rootskel/src/sbin/di-main-menu, I believe that all questions will
then be owned by d-i. IMO this is only cosmetics, and it needs
testing.

 but is this all you want?

 yes, i think
 does 'confmodule -o debian' work ?
 because i see that frontend is a link to debconf

No, AFAICT the -o flag must be passed to di-main-menu, as written above.

 I've added comments to all the prebaseconfig progress bar stuff.

Thanks.

 Got a question for Denis. This kind of minor change tends to create
 insanely large diffs (6000 lines for this change), and sometimes all
 that changes is some line numbers. Just adding a line to the top of a
 template throws off all the line numbers in all the po files for stuff
 furhter down. Would it be possible to make po-debconf omit the line
 numbers, or possibly use stanza numbers or template names instead, or
 would that mess up po editing tools?

I thought about removing line numbers, but they can be very useful, e.g.
podebconf-display-po takes a PO file as input, read line numbers to
re-create the original templates file and display it. It is very useful
to check translations with special formatting. Of course it is unable
to re-create complex templates files as those of the d-i, but it works
pretty well for normal stuff. For this program, using stanza numbers
might be an option.
But PO editors indeed allow jumping to source files, and this will be
broken.

The ideal solution seems to be that debconf-updatepo updates line
numbers only when preparing a release, e.g. po2debconf could first
call debconf-updatepo with a specific flag, but it should ideally be
performed only once when building a package, which does not seem
trivial. I will try harder to find a solution.

 Damm, it is still buggy and results in the two debconf questions being
 prompted in ispell dicts/wordlists postinsts.

Your update-default.in script should have an option to not ask debconf
question, which will be used when invoked from postinsts. Otherwise
it seems to be pretty hard to guarantee that questions are not asked
twice until all packages have switched to the new scheme.

  Miroslav, I just committed a fix for termwrap, could you please check if

 Great!
 base-config now displays proper iso8859-2 characters.

Good news.

 (But after base-config finishes, it displays several screens long mess
 which seems like a usage messages from consolechars -- likely there is
 some bad parameter somewhere).

 And of course, any messages *after* base-config (well, termwrap) are
 mangled again, but that's another story (I suppose console-tools need
 to setup iso-8859-2 font in /etc/console-data/config).

[Moving this discussion to debian-boot]

Absolutely, configuring console-tools when it supports the selected
locale is IMO the way to go. For this I am willing to add another
field to languagelist, like console_font(map), e.g. in your case
iso02.f16(iso02), /etc/console-tools/config would then be configured
with these values, and 2nd stage should work out of the box (and
will continue to work after base-config exits).
Of course, languages which need special terminal emulators are not
affected by this change.

Unless someone disagrees, I will add this field in languagelist and
patch termwrap accordingly.

base-config, kbd and console-tools

2004-02-26 Thread Denis Barbier
Hi,

is there any reason why base-config depends on console-tools instead
of console-tools | console-utilities?

It is not clear for me whether console-tools or kbd should be used;
the former seems to be unmaintained upstream but have an active
Debian maintainer, whereas this seems to be the opposite for kbd.
In a recent (01/2004) thread on the linux-utf8 ML (currently offline, so
no pointer, but Google should find its cached version) about problems
with UTF-8 and console, kbd upstream advised to throw console-tools away
and install the newest kbd.
Does someone have some experience on this topic?

 I belive this is a bug. I can't think of a good reason to set LANG=C in
 /etc/environment.

The locales/default_environment_locale question asks whether a locale
should be the default for the whole system. If answer is None,
/etc/environment is untouched, otherwise LANG=$locale is added into
this file. Are there suggestions to make it better?
