In any case, Artur, what kernel are you running?
   Custom 2.6.10 compiled from Debian kernel-source-2.6.10-4.
  Could you please try one of the kernel images on d.o and
  see if the problem persists.
 kernel-image-2.6.10-1-686 2.6.10-4 gives the same result:

To help debug this problem, is there a chance that you could try
out the 2.6.10 images that are in the debian archive. Also,
if you could attach the output of dmsg that might help in
tracking the problem down.

Bug#294559: Public domain licensing

2005-02-11 Thread Martin Samuelsson
Dear knowledge source,

As can be seen in #294559 I hope to become a debian developer. In the
same bug report one can see that the package I'd like to start with is
netbiff.

According to it's web page the license is:

License

All code contained in netbiff is released into the public domain.

Until I got asked me to double check with you I thought no problems
existed including software with public domained source code in debian.

It have been claimed that PD is a vague definition and the way GNU
defines freedom, PD is only almost free because future versions might
not be free. But that only applies do derived works, right? My
understanding is that once released under the public domain, the
public's right to that release can't be revoked? Have I gotten that
entirely wrong?

Will the upstream developer have to add a copyright claim to the PD
license too to make it legal?

I could try convince the Author to change to another license if there
are serious problems with having PD software in debian. However I would
prefer not to since I consider it to be the Author's right to choose
what license to release his work under and respecting the wishes of
others are important to me.

As far as I can tell, less is the only program on my machine behaving
strangely. Also, if I ssh into another machine from mine, less seems to work
correctly, while the opposite does not work (ssh to my machine from another).

I also downloaded and compiled less-382, and it works just fine.

 Besides that, maybe strace shows something...

I've attached the output of strace, but I suspect you may not find anything
interesting in it because the problem seems to go away when I run less
through strace. I used this command:

strace less testfile 2less.strace

 Is this happining on all files as soon as they contain lines longer than

  As an example, I have written a file that consists of 40 lines of
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789

  If I make my console window very small - 26x12 (to cause wrapping, and
  such that it fits nicely in an e-mail) and view this file in less, I see:

  This looks ok. Now I'll press the down arrow once, then the up arrow
  once. Here's what I see:

  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789klmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789

  Now if I press the down arrow again, I see this:

  0123456789
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  0123456789

 Do you have any environment variables or configuration files that affect
 less' behavior? Like ~/.less, $LESS, $LESSOPEN?

  No ~/.less file, and no variables with LESS in them. The problem exists
  in both xterm, konsole, and on a plain console. I also noticed that when
  less first opens this kind of file, it displays too many lines. For
  instance, in the example above, less tried to display the first 12 lines,
  even though there was only room for 6 since the lines were wrapped
  around.

2005-02-11 Thread Luke Campagnola
Some extra information for this bug: If I specify the full path to the less
binary, the problem goes away.

For example:
$ less -S file
Does not yield the same output as
$ /usr/bin/less -S file

 This led me to believe there was another less someplace else on the system,
however which verifies I am indeed running /usr/bin/less

Bug#294559: Public domain licensing

I've never heard of this. Public domain works are free.

One theoretical problem with public domain software: not all jurisdictions,
as far as I vaguely understand, actually have a notion of releasing your
work into the public domain.

A problem some authors have (and probably should have!) is that simply
saying released into the public domain isn't disclaiming warranty, so
the author might be inviting legal trouble onto himself.

For both of these reasons, I usually recommend that people who want to
permissively free a work use the MIT license, or the 2-clause BSD license,
which are well-established, simple licenses that allow pretty much anything.

However, I've never heard any serious claim that works released into the
public domain aren't free, and I've never heard of revoking a work from
the public domain (if you could do that, it was never in the public domain
to begin with).

Bug#293203: less: Lines longer than screen do not display correctly

2005-02-11 Thread Luke Campagnola
I figured it out:
alias less=less -r
and the manpage says:
. . . Thus, various display problems may result, such as long lines being
split in the wrong place.

Bug#294656: malloc: Input/output error with IDLE and Thunderbird

If the IDLE command is used and you connect with Thunderbird (German 1.0)
having IDLE support enabled you get these error messages at each login:

Feb 6 19:36:11 mail imaplogin: malloc: Input/output error
Feb  6 19:36:13 mail imaplogin: LOGOUT, user=whatever,

ip=[:::212.221.107.132], headers=273, body=1922, time=41

If you use SSL the message looks like this:
Feb  6 19:36:13 mail imapd-ssl: malloc: Input/output error

It seems this problem has been there for a while, as there is also an
italian report on
http://lists.debian.org/debian-italian/2004/11/msg00729.html

I did not experience any data loss yet, but removed the IDLE capability
just to be sure for now
Can you please post your courier-imap configuration file
(/etc/courier/imapd) ? Do you have the FAM daemon running ?

Bug#294703: request: relativize filename when adding a catalog

2005-02-11 Thread Sean Champ
Package: sgml-base
Version: 1.26
Severity: wishlist

(Pardon the outline format)

* Summary

I was trying to register a local catalog in the super catalog at
/etc/sgml/catalog

* What I did

Protypically put, I did:

  cd /usr/local/sgml/foo/bar
  update-catalog --add --super qux.cat

* What I'd expected

I'd expected that /etc/sgml/catalog would then have contained a line:
  CATALOG /usr/local/sgml/foo/bar/qux.cat

* What I found

The file /etc/sgml/catalog contained a line, like:
  CATLOG qux.cat
...a relative pathname, which did not resolve to the qux.cat that I'd
thought I'd specified.

* Wishlist item, Summary

It could be keen, if update-catalog would notice that a file's pathname
should be recorded, as it being an absolute pathname (or a relative
pathname, but if relative, then resolving to the file that would have been
identified in the call to 'update-catalog')

* Proposed Workaround

  update-catalog --add --super $PWD/qux.cat

* Conclusion

This is a not a huge issue, granted. I just thought it could be wishlisted.

Thanks

Bug#293421: Installed size of development package has quadrupled since GTK+ 2.4.14

2005-02-11 Thread Loïc Minier
Hi,

[EMAIL PROTECTED] - Thu, Feb 03, 2005:

 I'm guessing that -g was not switched on in the previous version. Perhaps now
 that the -dbg packages are available, the -dev packages should be stripped?

 dh_strip is correctly called, and for .a files, strip --strip-debug is
 called.

 I've tried running strip and strip --strip-debug on the .a myself,
 and looked whether the .a was still usable. I've built a Gtk binary
 with:

bee% gcc test.o ./libgtk-x11-2.0.a /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.a \
/usr/lib/libatk-1.0.a /usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.a /usr/lib/libm.a \
/usr/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.a /usr/lib/libpangox-1.0.a \
/usr/lib/libpango-1.0.a /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.a \
/usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.a /usr/lib/libdl.a /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.a \
/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.a /usr/lib/libfontconfig.a /usr/lib/libXcursor.a \
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.a /usr/lib/libXrender.a /usr/lib/libXft.a \
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXinerama.a /usr/X11R6/lib/libXrandr.a \
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.a /usr/lib/libpng12.a /usr/lib/libjpeg.a \
/usr/lib/libtiff.a /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.a /usr/lib/libfreetype.a \
/usr/lib/libexpat.a /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.a /usr/lib/libfontconfig.a \
/usr/lib/libXrender.a /usr/lib/libz.a /usr/lib/libm.a -o test

 I could build it with the current version in Debian (which is 'strip
 --strip-debug'ed), but not with a stripped version.

 There might be a lot of reasons for this problem, the ones I think of
 are:
 - gtk wasn't built in the same way as it was before upstream (I'm
   talking of the autoconf/automake/libtool/etc. changes upstream might
   have made),
 - gtk simply added many symbols and cross-references and the size
   increase is normal,
 - previous .a were unusable,
 - strip is wrongly called in dh_strip and might remove a lot more than
   what we think,
 - strip has a bug and should remove more or have more configuration
   parameters to remove things from the .a.

 Questions we need to solve:
 - is the .a correctly built (might include too much from the ground
   up)?
 - could we strip more from the .a and still use it?

   Regards,

Bug#294707: tomcat4: Tomcat ignores allowLinking resource on restart (not reload) from manager

2005-02-11 Thread Sergey Sholokh
Package: tomcat4
Version: 4.1.31-local-3
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Tomcat forgets allowLinking resource on restart from manager
interface.
Quick investigation has shown - during stop allowLinking resetting to
false and the system startup will fail.
I have found that bug in tomcat maillist
(http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21818)
In HEAD that bug is fixed.
But in debian package not yet :-(

I have stolen a patch fron CVS and apply to source from debian package.
After install that package I had pass some test with restart
application from manager (I use log4j symlink in WEB-INF in my webapp). Its
work fine.

Bug#294704: ipopd-ssl: after client's failure to connect processes (ipop3d) remains

2005-02-11 Thread Peter Stelmachovic
Package: ipopd-ssl
Version: N/A; reported 2005-02-11
Severity: important

Client tries to connect and I see in logs something like

pop3s SSL service init from 192.168.1.215

but that is all. The client reports failure in connection and that it
was refused by the server.

The problem is that the corresponding processes ipop3d does not exit
but remains and can be listed with ps auxf | grep pop

root 26622  0.0  0.0  4016 1592 ?S   Feb10   0:00  \_ipop3d
root 30559  0.0  0.0  4012 1592 ?S   Feb10   0:00  \_ipop3d

Moreover as there is a limit on connections pre source in xinetd when
such processes acumulate it results into denial of service for that
client. (Yes this can be changed but that is not a solution)

Note that this happens only when the client is connected to the internet
with a gsm edge card. That is via mobile operator.
If he is connected with wireless or cable everything is O.K.

Look at http://bugs.debian.org/129968, maybe it would give you a hint.

BTW, I placed 01tun.rules file with content:
KERNEL=tun,   NAME=misc/%k, SYMLINK=net/%k
and this annoying message does not appear anymore.

It looks for me that hotplug should have an exception for net/tun (but not

If the installer is started with linux26 it fails to detect the cd-rom
drive (a TEAC CD 224-E). This step works if I use the default 2.4
kernel. With 2.4 I can see it even as cat /proc/ide/ide0/hda/model.
This returns the correct desription of the drive.

Peter Hopfgartner

Bug#286515: are you sure swap can be labeled?

2005-02-11 Thread Vassilii Khachaturov
 You could use something like

 LABEL=root /  ext2defaults0   1
 LABEL=swap none   swapsw  0   0
 LABEL=home /home  ext2defaults0   1

 in your /etc/fstab, instead of /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda1.

Is your fstab example a real life one, or fictional? in the 1st case,
how did you manage to have the swap labeled??

I don't know how can one label a swap partition, if at all.
mkswap/swapon/swapoff don't seem to be providing such an option.
I know I can remove the swap partition and create another
one with one big file on it to hold the swap, but I suspect from the
architectural reasons this will be worse than using a dedicated partition.

I have suffered my share of problems with trying to keep
2.4 and 2.6 going together smoothly on the same machine
(see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=286515 )
and came up with nothing better than going single and
moving the appropriate fstab (sda flavoured for 2.6 and hda for 2.4)
in place. BTW, I have never figured how to force the cdrw
not to work in the ide-scsi emulation mode in 2.6; even with the
ide-cd driver preloaded by /etc/modules and an option

 options ide-scsi ignore=hdd

added to the modules.conf (via update-modutils), the scsi
emulation still grabs hdd (somehow pulled in by the sata_sil?)

vassilii

Are the static GTK+ etc libraries actually usable at all? As I
understand it, GTK+ can be linked to a static library but there are
still many libraries it opens at runtime (gdk image loaders, gtk input
methods, Pango engines) which makes providing .a files pretty useless.

Bug#294681: acpid should do something about sleep/suspend

Am 11.02.2005 um 04:07 schrieb Peter Eckersley:
Package: acpid
Version: 1.0.4-1

Having just made the transition from apm to acpi, I found both acpi and
acpid to be rather unhelpful packages when trying to get suspend
working. Google eventually tells you that you need to echo things into
/proc/acpi/sleep (which happens to work on my system).
Then the system clock starts wandering all over the place, and I had to
research the hwlock --hctosys solution. Acpid should at least
include
something like:

http://csd.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~eagle/acpid.html
in its examples, if not a more explicit debconf framework of attempt
to
implement ACPI suspend [Y/N].
Packages which include hwclock should drop a script to be executed
by acpid. I was blocking this stuff because person one wants to see
support for gnome feature xyz, person two for kde, etc. This could get
quite complex and maybe its better if the applications provide scripts
themselves.

Bug#253777: kill -9 after some time?

2005-02-11 Thread Thomas Hood
 I've seen this many times, most recently on an upgrade of squid:

 Unpacking replacement squid-common ...
 Preparing to replace squid 2.5.5-4 (using .../squid_2.5.5-5_i386.deb) ...
 Stopping proxy server: Waiting
 . Failed.. done.
 Unpacking replacement squid ...

 For some reason squid just doesn't stop. Manually killing squid works.

I have seen this too, but it doesn't happen every time.

I have two comments.

1. 120 seconds is a _long_ time to wait for a service to shut down.
   Is the initscript waiting too long?

2. After some period of time, should the initscript not attempt to
   kill squid again? After some period of time, should the
   initscript not kill squid with SIGKILL?

Please note that start-stop-daemon has a very useful --retry feature
with which initscripts can perform escalating kills. The pdnsd and
dnsmasq initscript are good examples to follow.

Bug#294431: Standard network configurations

2005-02-11 Thread Thomas Hood
Please note that the standard way of setting up a Debian system that
lacks a permanent network card is:

$ cat /etc/hostname
foo
$ hostname
foo
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost foo
...
$ hostname -f
localhost.localdomain

The setup that I recommend, and which I plan to promote as the future
standard, for machines without permanent network cards is:
$ cat /etc/hostname
foo
$ hostname
foo
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.1.1 foo
...
$ hostname -f
foo

If the machine has a permanent network card with a permanent IP address
(i.e., not assigned by DHCP) but no permanent domain name then the
standard configuration is:

$ cat /etc/hostname
foo
$ hostname
foo
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
202.13.55.88 foo
...
$ hostname -f
foo

If the machine has a permanent network card with a permanent IP address
and a permanent domain name then the standard configuration is:

$ cat /etc/hostname
foo
$ hostname
foo
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
202.13.55.88 foo.foodomain foo
...
$ hostname -f
foo.foodomain

On installation, squid should be able to handle all these standard
configurations without failing in order to be considered fit for
release.

Bug#294718: php4 switch to threadsafety renders accelerators unfunctional

2005-02-11 Thread Jan Gerle
Package: php4
Version: = 4:4.3.10-3

From version 4.3.10-3 on php4 is built with enabled thread-safety. This
renders accelerators like turck-mmcache or phpa unfunctional. Maybe turck can
do the thread-trick (phpa cannot, I mailed with the author), but aptitude
forces me to uninstall turck when upgrading from 4.3.10-2 to 4.3.10-3.

Btw.: According to the author's website, turck-mmcache is capable of working
on a threadsafe php4.

I suggest to split up the package into a threaded and a non-threaded one as
most of the corporate users rely on accelerators (and not all of them got the
Zend-one).

Furtheron a dependancy to caudium has been established (need to install
caudium when installing php4) which doesn't make sense to me.

Cheers,
Jan

Bug#292478: oops on boot with usb cdburner attached

2005-02-11 Thread Uwe Dippel
I *guess* I'm sitting on the same problem, though here the report would
read slightly differently:

Had this since I added 2.6.8-1 to 2.6.7: 2.6.8 starts and kind-of freezes
after some lines of kernel-error-messages; after mounting the harddisk.
Didn't bother, hoping that it would go away with the next version. But on
2.6.8-2 the same thing happens. 2.6.7 boots fine, though.
It boots, does a lot of things then writes some error messages. No,
/var/log/kern is and remains empty whenever I (fail to) boot to 2.6.8.
So here is
what happens:
...
[c01042ad] kernel-Thread_helper+0x5/0x18
Code: 89 01 89 48 04 b8 00 01 10 00 c7 43 04 00 02 20 00 8d 9a 8c
6note: kblockd/0[42] exited with preempt_count 1
Yenta:

[then it continues for a few lines until:]
...
ieee1394: Host added:ID:Bus [0-00:1023] GUID [434fc0003ab22838]
From then onwards, nothing. It still echoes Enter; but nothing more
happens. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-D don't do anything
either.
Then I found this bug (292478). And checked. If I unplug the usb burner,
it does boot; so I guess it is the same bug. But here, 2.6.7 boots great
with burner (and burns great). Only with 2.6.8 the trouble crept in.
I'm sitting on a DELL Latitude D400, and here I attach the whole dmesg.
Of cause, I boot without usb-burner; and attach the device later, so
that you know its details (scroll down):

Hi
I'm using combined log format for apache:
LogFormat %h %l %u %t \%r\ %s %b \%{Referer}i\ \%{User-Agent}i\
\%{forensic-id}n\ combined
I think it was default format for apache and I didn't changed it.
You are right for apache 1, but apache2 doesn't have the forensic-id field.
I'll patch the config file by attached patch. I'll also add a note to
README.Debian.

An alternative way would be to change the regexes to be non-greedy (which
could also speed the parsing up a little bit), but that would need more
testing for corner cases (and smells more hackish IMHO).

Bug#294722: dhcp: Missing define in debian/patches/token-ring.patch?

2005-02-11 Thread Michael Banck
Package: dhcp
Version: 2.0pl5-19.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

the token-ring patch does this in common/dispatch.c:

+#ifndef HAVE_ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR
+# define ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR HTYPE_IEEE802_TR
+#endif
+ case ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR:
+   tmp - hw_address.hlen = 6;
+   tmp - hw_address.htype = ARPHRD_IEEE802;
+   memcpy (tmp - hw_address.haddr, sa.sa_data, 6);
+   break;
+

However, it seems to not #define HTYPE_IEEE802_TR anywhere, so this code
is bound to fail on systems which do not #define HAVE_ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR
in their include/cf/foo.h header file. The other HTYPE_* get #defined in
include/dhcp.h, so this belong there as well I guess. However, I am not
sure what HTYPE_IEEE802_TR actually should be defined as. net/if_arp.h
#defines HAVE_ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR as 800, but it also #defines ARPHRD_FDDI
as 774, while include/dhcp.h has HTYPE_FDDI as 8.

Also, I think it be better to move the #endif down the block, as is done
for most of the other types:

#ifdef HAVE_ARPHRD_NETROM
  case ARPHRD_NETROM:
tmp - hw_address.hlen = 6;
tmp - hw_address.htype = ARPHRD_NETROM;
memcpy (tmp - hw_address.haddr, sa.sa_data, 6);
break;
#endif

and just add an addtional check like

#ifndef ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR
# define ARPHRD_IEEE802_TR HTYPE_IEEE802_TR
#endif

The last issue is that it should be checked whether ARPHRD_ETHER is
defined and probably be defined to HTYPE_ETHER if not.

cheers,

Michael

Bug#294725: k3b hangs then crashes on startup

2005-02-11 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: k3b
Version: 0.11.19-1
Severity: grave
Hello,
This might be related to Bug#292892, since the symptoms are similar, in
which case it is presumably not actually a k3b bug. But it's not
exactly the same so I figured I'd better report it here. I'm not sure
whether this one should be grave or important, but it certainly
renders k3b entirely unusable to me, so I'm going for grave for now.
Sorry if I have gotten this wrong.

When I start k3b, I get the splash-screen, and it gets to Reading Local
Song database. At this point it hangs, for several minutes, using most
of my processor time. Then it crashes.
Running k3b from the terminal produces the following output:
 helen:~ k3b
 k3b: ERROR: (K3bCdDevice) Unable to do inquiry.
 KCrash: Application 'k3b' crashing...
 zsh: alarm  k3b
That's all.
Please let me know if I can provide any more information about this
problem.
Thanks,
Helen.

 Is there a problem with this? Could something along these lines be
 done
 when -lfoo (as opposed to -optl-lfoo, which for consistency should
 probably be left alone) is given on the ghci command-line?

 I'm no library expert, so there may be a cleaner/simpler/more portable
 equivalent to the above.

I'm not that familiar with libtool, but I guess what you're doing here
is creating a dummy shared library which is linked against -lpthread,
and linking that into GHCi?

I don't see any reason why we couldn't automate the process, except that
getting all the fiddly details right would probably be a nightmare. And
would you require libtool to be installed? What about other platforms -
Mac OS X?

Cheers,
Simon

Hi,
I have just realised that whatever k3b is doing when it crashes on
startup, it doesn't do that when I run it as root. So that's not as
bad, though clearly it isn't ideal either.

Sorry for the hassle of having a mistitled bug with the wrong severity

Bug#294130: README.mailman: Multiple databases should now be possible

2005-02-11 Thread Jonas Meurer
On 08/02/2005 Julian Mehnle wrote:
 README.mailman says:

 | As long as lurker doesn't support multible databases per instance, you

 I don't have any experience with older versions of lurker, but I see that
 there is a dbdir option in lurker's config file, so I would guess that
 the current version of lurker actually _does_ support multiple databases,
 provided that multiple config files are used.

that's correct indeed, but you'll have to install seperate instances of
lurkers binary to configure different htdocs (webcache) directories as
well.
therefore i see currently no possibility to run more than one lurker
instance with the debian lurker package installation.

if you need to split the archive into private and public lists, please
contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've already requested this
feature, but there are still some residual issues that have to be
settled.

 If this is correct, it should be possible to create separate archives for
 individual private lists or for individual sites (groups), and
 README.mailman should be fixed not to give a wrong impression. (Maybe
 even instructions on how to set this up could be given.)

nice idea, any i'dd be glad to see suggestions for the documentation as
soon as multible instances are supported.

the biggest problem is how to connect these two archives? do you need to
have access to all lists in the private area? or would you split the
archives without any connection?

what about that situation: you have 5 public and 5 private lists.
now the first private list has 20 subscribers, second, third and fourth
each 30 and the fifth private list has 40 subscribers.

remember, you need a unique account for every subscriber of every list.

every private list would need a seperate private lurker instance here,
wouldn't it?

to make it even more complicated, what about people who have access to
more than one private list? should they have one account for all, or one
account for each of the lists?

i was prosperous if lurker would have support for multible instances.

bye

 One thing to consider is degree of difficulty :-)

  I believe the plan for md5 and sha1 and such is to use the much
  faster openssl versions in the future (based on a long thread
  debating future interfaces to such things on python-dev last summer).
  That'll sidestep any tedious license issue and give a better

 I wasn't around for that discussion. There are two viable replacements
 for the RSA implementation currently used;

 libmd http://www.penguin.cz/~mhi/libmd/
 openssl http://www.openssl.org/.

 The libmd implementation is by Colin Plumb and has the licence; This
 code is in the public domain; do with it what you wish. The API is
 identical to the RSA implementation and BSD world's libmd and hence is a
 drop in replacement. This implementation is faster than the RSA
 implementation.

[...]

 Currently md5c.c is included in the python sources. The libmd
 implementation has a drop in replacement for md5c.c. The openssl
 implementation is a complicated tangle of Makefile expanded template
 code that would be harder to include in the Python sources.

I would prefer that one as a short term solution. Patch at #1118602.

Since i wanted to use the $1/$2 provided option to the prerm script, which
resulted in a /=D/vmlinux-2.6.10-power4 path, it obviously failed.

After looking at : /usr/share/kernel-package/rules, it is obvious why this
happens, since preinst/prerm only get a subset of the = variables substituted.
I am not sure if this is a mistake or intentional though. The current
kernel-package/rules code is :

Bug#294740: /usr/bin/php4: preg_match() throws pcre_fullinfo() errors

2005-02-11 Thread Max Roeleveld
Package: php4-cli
Version: 4:4.3.10-3
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/php4

After upgrading php4 packages today, I'm left with a setup that refuses
to run preg_match() in PHP scripts. The resulting error message is
  Warning: preg_match: internal pcre_fullinfo() error -3 in [file]
on line [line].

This issue seems -very- similar, if not completely the same, to bug
#280823.

The PCRE version as reported by phpinfo() is 3.9 02-Jan-2002, which
strikes me as odd. Another box (running testing instead of unstable)
reports 4.5 01-December-2003.

Hopefully, this bug is as easy to stomp as the one mentioned above...

real
problem.

Erm... AFAICS, you have this entirely back-to-front. apt *does* *not* depend
on libapt-pkg-perl; quite the opposite, in fact.

apt provides a virtual package which specifies its API version. The version
of apt in unstable provides libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5-3.3, whereas the version of
experimental provides libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5-3.5.

The latest version of libapt-pkg-perl (which is maintained by the perl
maintainer, not the apt maintainers) still depends on
libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5-3.3, which is quite correct as the package in unstable
must use the same API version as the apt in unstable.

IMHO, this bug should either be closed or reassigned to libapt-pkg-perl as a
wishlist request for an upload to experimental that depends on the new API.

Adam

gaia ~ $ netselect -vv ftp.fr.debian.org
Running netselect to choose 1 out of 1 address.

ftp.fr.debian.org  ms  30 hops0% ok

  I think this is mainly due to the fact that I'm hosted behind an aggressive
(and stupid) firewall.
I don't know exactly what goes through, but I can tell you this:

  UDP doesn't come, whichever the situation;
  only outbound TCP connections are allowed;

  Obviouly, ping probes do work, so I don't really know what to say.

  Could the problems come from this ?? Would there be any workaround ?

Unfortunately a license that says it is in the public domain is

gnome-calculator does not obey operator precedence when performing
calculations.

e.g., it calculates 1 + 2 * 3 = 9 instead of the expected 1 + 2 * 3 = 7.

Hi,

That's not a bug, according to the website
(http://calctool.sourceforge.net/):

One of the most important things to remember about calctool is that
calculations are performed from left to right, with no arithmetic
precedence. If you need arithmetic precedence, then you should use
parentheses.

The devel is working on a new branch with arithmetic precedence, so this
bug should be fixed in the next versions.

Cheers,

Sebastien Bacher

2005-02-11 Thread Carsten Wolff
Hi,

where does the strace come from? What did Matt do to get it? I can't reproduce
any problem.
And can you please point me to an archive of the discussion you talk about? I
would like to see, what Matt wrote, too.

Thank you,

Bug#294668: faqomatic: Maintenance job fails if HOST contains a dash

2005-02-11 Thread Jereme Corrado
Hello Ruediger,

What's Ruediger Blach talkin' 'bout, Willis?
 If the value of the HOST variable in
 `/var/lib/fom/meta/maintenance_job_conf' contains a dash,
 `/usr/share/perl5/FAQ/OMatic/Debian.pm' fails:

Thanks for reporting this. I will ask my sponsor to upload a
corrected package today once I have double checked it.

 Looks similar to bug #291305.

Similar, it dies in a later test but yes, it's the same idea.

Thanks once again,
jereme

I suspect that it is caused by this line

But that this doesn't work for you seems strange.

 and linking that into GHCi?

Yup.

 I don't see any reason why we couldn't automate the process, except that
 getting all the fiddly details right would probably be a nightmare.

Like I say, I'm no expert either :-(

 And would you require libtool to be installed? What about other
 platforms - Mac OS X?

If the necessary bits aren't available then you can fall back to acting
like -optl-foo and are no worse off than currently.

I think libtool is supposed to take care of the portability side for
you, so hopefully lots of special casing won't be necessary. I don't
know how well that works in practice, though.
