Bug#315358: mailman: Unicode error

2005-06-22 Thread Joris
Package: mailman
Version: 2.1.5-8
Severity: important

When going to the membership management, I get the following error:
UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xf9 in position 20:
ordinal not in range(128)

The web-interface shows the sorry, we've hit a bug message.

This renders things quite unusable :(

This is the full logfile:

Bug#315359: aptitude: Dependancy Resolution likes to /Break/ packages!

2005-06-22 Thread Elliott Mitchell
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-2

I'm doing a update from what is now oldstable to stable, using Aptitude's
interactive mode. There are a number of cases where Aptitude's dependancy
resolution likes to select packages that are unneeded. Sometimes these
selections even cause packages that were not otherwise broken to be put
in a broken state!

1 It wants to select libwww0. This appears to be from tetex-bin
which depends on libwww0 | libwww-ssl0, however; as libwww-ssl0 is
already selected tetex-bin is non-broken, and as libwww0 and libwww-ssl0
conflict, this moves both of them to a broken state! A further note, an
older version of libwww-ssl0 is already present.

2 Aptitude wants to install xlibmesa-dev, despite the selection of
libglu1-mesa-dev. libgle-dev_3.0.7-2 is installed, and inventor-dev is
selected, but both of those are satisfied by libglu1-mesa-dev. This could
be due to an older version being installed, but that is slated for
removal, and the installation of both would break both.

3 Aptitude also really wants exim4/exim4-base/exim4-config. Likely
this comes through one of a zillion things that recommend or depend on
exim4 | mail-transport-agent. Thing is a *lot* of packages provide
mail-transport-agent (and notably nearly all of those have a far superior
security track record). Due to the installation of other packages which
provide mail-transport-agent, selecting those packages merely puts them
in a broken state!

4 Aptitude's decision to select flex-old due to the recommendation
of bison++. Yet, due to the installation of flex, this selection causes
both to be broken.

This looks like the dependancy resolution code doesn't look far enough
before deciding that a dependancy isn't fulfilled. Notably for #1 I'd
have to guess it is simply finding that the first item in that OR isn't
fulfilled and therefore selecting that without exploring and finding
that the second IS fulfilled.

This seems to suggest that mark-sweep should be used for identifying
broken packages, rather than a graph traversal. This would also take care
of the problem of circular dependancies.

A simple solution would be the one suggested for #149049. I'd tend to
refer to it as Forbidding the installation of a package, but the idea is
the same. As a matter of fact I also agree with the use of '=' for this
purpose and in fact I'd tend to use the Hold flag as this also is the
same idea (being held at version zero/not-installed). Same issue occurs
with dselect actually. I simply want to tell it DO NOT SELECT THE BLOODY
PACKAGE! I'LL TAKE CARE OF ANY BREAKAGE LATER, AT MY OWN CONVENIENCE!

Sorry about that, because I'm having to take care of this over a number
of sessions it gets annoying after a couple times.

Hi Daniel,

thanks for the fast reply.
No, this is gnome-terminal, colour scheme black on white. I just tried
xterm and konsole, but these don't show the problem. So this could be a
problem of gnome-terminal.

Bug#273208: xfig: Exporting to eps and other formats fails: fig2dev: command not found

2005-06-22 Thread Hagen Schendel
I recently stepped into that xfig/transfig trap, wondering why I was not
able to export eps. Most people I know use xfig to export eps and pdf.
Thus I would consider the eps export function to be one of the core
functionalities of xfig. If a core functionality of a program depends on
another package then this should be reflected by its package
dependencies. Everything else is bad practice in my opinion. Even if
there may be situations where you only want to draw a picture but do
not want to export it to something different to the FIG format. Please
switch the xfig package to depend on transfig.

 Yes I have, it (or something close to it) will get into the next
 release. However I'm not going to release a new version of a package
 for some minor manual page changes.

Yes, I agree that makes the most sense.

 I'm curious to know why the hurry? I missed it for some reason in the
 last release.

No hurry at all. I noticed the problem, checked the BTS and noticed a
semi-old bug without any comment. I was really just curious as to the
status.

 The only diference is in the kernel version which is 2.4.27 on the

 is related to the problem but I did not find other diferences...

I don't think so, thanks.

Does it take precedence over the Policy for PEAR modules I found at:

  This is because the questions are skipped when debian-installer/locale

  always the case as soon as localechooser has been run once.

 No, I fixed that last night.

Hmm, well, bad timing, then. Of course, this happens when I decide to
take again some care of my udeb packages..:-)

I'll recheck with my daily builds as you just uplaoded the fixed
version which should have made it in my daily builds.

Bug#315030: writes gateway ip to /etc/resolv.conf when using preseeded settings

2005-06-22 Thread Joshua Kwan
Hi all,

Christian Perrier wrote:

Pong.

Dealing with getting into college, things have been really hectic and
I've been only able to pay sparse attention to any package. I am more
than willing for other people to pick up my slack in my absence.

I will certainly return during this academic year (August onwards.)
Currently I am doing an internship at Sun Microsystems. I can handle
very severe bug reports, but honestly Debian is currently second
priority. Except, of course, when I will see everyone at Debconf; that
entire week is devoted to Debian.

 This is not incompatable, actually: even if Josh answers with OK, I
 come back to d-i development and will take care of netcfg, this
 package is important enough to have one, even two, backup
 maintainer(s).

Seconded.

Apologetically yours,

Bug#315287: hotplug: reseting whole usb bus when plugging new device, leading to kill the usb root FS

2005-06-22 Thread Benoit Hamet
'rescan' the whole system in the case of a debian system beeing on an
usb root FS.

This is a kernel issue.

 Marco, could you espand on what the kernel issue is.
 Is it the same bus rescan = bad issue that we were discussing last week?

It seems that's related to the device/driver. I try the same experience
with a 128Mb USB key USB2.0 certified, and it works well. I try with a
Card Reader USB1.1 (don't have the references under the hand) and a 1Gb
Flash Card and then the whole things is reseted, killing the root FS
... I read the previous bus rescan = bad issue in the bug tracker, and
that's perhaps similar ...
I will try tomorrow to test the system with the debian compiled 2.6.8 to
see if I found the same problem ...

Benoît.

What screen resolution are you using?

Bug#312740: Packaging of rote and anyterm

Hi,
Well, it seems I don't have a lot of options now, do I? :)
OK, since you want to maintain them so much, they're yours.
But please, next time look at the ITPs before packaging something, it's a
shame to have duplicated work.
As I said, I have made the rote packages too therefore I have some notes on
your packaging:
a) librote-dev should depend on libncurses5-dev (you'll find out yourself
when you try to pdebuild anyterm ;)
b) You _have_ to package 0.2.6+20050511 (CVS snapshot). It has some very
important fixes - without them anyterm doesn't work very well, read the
anyterm homepage.
c) (minor) Upstream COPYING has LGPL v2.1 - you are referencing LGPL
version 2 or newer in debian/copyright.

I'm CCing Phil Endecott, upstream author of Anyterm who has offered to help.
Please look at the discussion in #311597, Phil has made some interesting
suggestions.

Good luck, I'm looking forward in seeing these in Debian!

Faidon

I can spend some time to make the test if you prepare a build for that. I've

on mod_delay on it, proftpd crash within 2 hours.

Be sure to build a real Sarge version.

Let me know how to do the test too.

 The prior art argument is pretty much irrelevant in our question as long
 as the legal status quo is different and the patent has not been
 challanged.

Wouldn't this be a case where pubpat could be asked to review the patent and
try to challenge it? Debian is, after all, quite well-known, and if this
patent really
 - has prior art and thus should be available, and
 - is enforced aggressively enough that some developers have been scared
away,
I think pubpat might be interested.

(The two items above were hinted at in this discussion - I'm not familiar
with the case, just jumping in.)

Yes. That's what I want. But then I get the error messages. I don't

With UTF: Latin 1, Western Europe (CP1252) the umlauts are rendered

that will help you. The contents seems to be binary -- the typical

Bug#315339: Same problem here...

2005-06-22 Thread Torsten Landschoff
Hi *,

I upgraded to current unstable yesterday and that brought in a new
version of lvm2, named lvm2_2.01.12-1_i386.deb.

Booting my system today I got the following error:

Setting up LVM Volume Groups...
  PV segment VG free_count mismatch: 0 != 4294958459
  Internal error: PV segments corrupted in target.
  Volume group target not found

  Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
  PV segment VG free_count mismatch: 0 != 4294958459

Maybe this is related to the fact that I set up lvm using lvm1 years back.
The metadata is still in lvm1 format - perhaps that's it what triggers the
bug.

All configuration data available at request.

 Does it take precedence over the Policy for PEAR modules I found at:

 Let me know if there is a better place for me to ask these questions.

It is in incoming queue for a few month and stucked, because there is no

too.

I don't agree with this unofficial Policy for PEAR modules. The packages are
installed by `pear' command and it is completly wrong, because it is another
package manager with own dependencies. In fact my pear-package tool is some
converted from `pear' packages to `dpkg' packages, i.e. like alien for RPMs.

I think we should talk about PEAR modules on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 We're working on this. An updated package for sarge / etch / sid has
 been prepared and will be tested.

 Backporting to woody is not trivial (the code is more than 4 years old),
 but we'll do a best effort.

The patches have been applied or backported for both
stable/testing/unstable (same version) aswell as oldstable. It now is
awaiting review/testing by the other maintainer (Jeroen) and if that
turns up no problems they can be released.

2005-06-22 Thread Emmanuel Fleury
Package: xmms
Version: 1.2.10+cvs20050209-2
Followup-For: Bug #161702

I have a very similar problem but I have a way to reproduce it 100% sure.

I was listening to an OGG radiostream
(http://ogg.tv-radio.fr:1441/encoderfinter.ogg) then I tried to see the
File Info. Xmms took 97% of my CPU and even closing the windows was
not enough to keep it low. Only the termination of the Xmms program
could make it go.

The strace show nothing particular. So, it might be a different issue.
But, in case of doubt as the symptoms are very similar I submit as a
follow-up of #161702.

Bug#313396: please allow ensure to take std::string and std::ostringstream

2005-06-22 Thread martin f krafft
also sprach Vladimir Dyuzhev [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2005.06.22.0655 +0200]:
 Well, I've applied it. To some extent. First, I made the ensure a template
 function, so it happily accepts both std::string and const char*:

 templatetypename T
 void ensure(const T msg,bool cond)
 {
if( !cond ) throw failure(msg);
 }

... if you think this is type-safe enough? If I do a mistake and
pass e.g. an int as message, the error will be in the failure
constructor, which may or may not be as clear as you want it.

 But I refused to include the std::ostringstream part. I feel it's more
 a ad-hoc hack, and thus should be avoided.

Yeah, okay.

 (I'm really wondering why
 you're building messages of THAT length?

They are short, but they needed an integer in the text because they
were run as part of an algorithm:

Here, a simple example from my playing around with boost::graph:

  template typename GraphType
class AdjacencyChecker
{
  public:
AdjacencyChecker(GraphType const G) : G_(G) {}

typedef typename boost::graph_traitsGraphType::vertex_descriptor Verte
void operator()(Vertex const V)
{
  typedef typename boost::graph_traitsGraphType GraphTraits;
  typename boost::property_mapGraphType, boost::vertex_index_t::type
index = boost::get(boost::vertex_index, G_);

  std::ostringstream ost;
  ost  vertex   index(V)  ' ';
  std::string out(ost.str() + has two adjacent vertices);
  typename boost::graph_traitsGraphType::adjacency_iterator ai, ai_end
  boost::tie(ai, ai_end) = boost::adjacent_vertices(V, G_);
  ensure(out.c_str(), ai_end - ai == 2);
}

  private:
GraphType const G_;
};

  template
  template
  void TestObjectType::test4()
  { // test adjacent vertices
SimpleBidiGraph g(EDGE_ARRAY[0], EDGE_ARRAY[NUM_EDGES], NUM_VERTICES);
boost::graph_traitsSimpleBidiGraph::vertex_iterator vi, vi_end;
tie(vi, vi_end) = boost::vertices(g);
std::for_each(vi, vi_end, AdjacencyCheckerSimpleBidiGraph(g));
  }

 provide a short hint; the rest is in test itself!). Good news is that
 your can easily use std::ostringstream in ensure now with

   ensure(oss.str(),1==2);

 as ensure accepts std::string now.

Yes, this will be fine.

 P.S. I've finally imported the code into the SF CVS (oh, my, all these
 years the code was stored on my machine only!), so you can get it
 using anonymous CVS, I guess.

 ZIP/TGZ package will be on the web site soon as well.

Nice. I'll wait with the Debian package until the weekend then. Thanks,

umlaut and the second character following after that umlaut is missing.
So I receive wre instead of würde or brlegt instead of überlegt

The history saves messages I've send in utf-8, but the umlauts I have
received seems not to be stored in utf-8. The second missing character
is saved correctly. So it's a problem with displaying because of wrong
saved character encoding.

That bug makes it difficult to read. So please fix it soon.

Alexander

Bug#315381: fsck.jfs segfaults in some situations when replaying journal

2005-06-22 Thread Nico Schottelius
Package: jfsutils
Version: 1.1.7-1
Severity: critical

Using fsck.jfs on my loopback file caused it multiply to segfault.
I could 'fix' it by using --omit_journal_replay.

I don't know in which state the filesystem has to be to segfault fsck,
but someone should check the log replay source.

Bug#315385: svn-inject: fails to detect upstream version if .orig.tar.gz is a symlink

2005-06-22 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Package: svn-buildpackage
Version: 0.6.7
Severity: normal

I decided to use svn-buildpackage on my packages so I tried t svn-inject
all my current sources. However until now I always used uscan (package
devscripts) to download new upstream sources and this program keeps
the old name to the archive but it creates a symlink with a proper name.

Example:
$ ls -l libxml-mini-perl_1.2.8.orig.tar.gz
lrwxrwxrwx  1 rhertzog rhertzog 21 2004-11-07 09:42
libxml-mini-perl_1.2.8.orig.tar.gz - XML-Mini-1.2.8.tar.gz

This works fine with all common tools (dpkg-source, dput, etc.)

Now I tried to svn-inject that package and I got this
$ svn-inject libxml-mini-perl_1.2.8-2.dsc
https://svn.freexian.org:8084/debian/pkg/
cp /home/rhertzog/partages/debian/paquets/XML-Mini-1.2.8.tar.gz
/home/rhertzog/partages/debian/paquets/tarballs
mkdir -p libxml-mini-perl/branches/upstream
tar -z -x -f /home/rhertzog/partages/debian/paquets/XML-Mini-1.2.8.tar.gz
mv XML-Mini-1.2.8 current
 svn -q import -m[svn-inject] Installing original source of libxml-mini-perl
libxml-mini-perl https://svn.freexian.org:8084/debian/pkg/libxml-mini-perl
 svn -m [svn-inject] Tagging upstream source version of libxml-mini-perl copy
https://svn.freexian.org:8084/debian/pkg/libxml-mini-perl/branches/upstream/current
 2 more arguments
svn: Path 'current' already exists
Command svn -m [svn-inject] Tagging upstream source version of
libxml-mini-perl copy
https://svn.freexian.org:8084/debian/pkg/libxml-mini-perl/branches/upstream/current
 2 more arguments failed, how to continue now? [Qri?]:
[...]

The log skips the useful arguments ... but I watches the process list and
the command which fails is mostly:
svn copy .../branches/upstream/current .../branches/upstream/

Checking quickly the source code, I see that $upsVersion was concatenated
at the end of the last arguement. But it looks like $upsVersion is
empty... so this means that svn-inject failed to guess the upstream
version correctly.

Furthermore, in 'tarballs' the program copied archives with the original
name and not the Debian name:
$ ls tarballs/
XML-Mini-1.2.8.tar.gz

I'm pretty sure this will create problems later.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions if needed.

 Now, what prevents us writing helper-packages to maintain a subset of,
 say, /srv/webapps/?

The underlined portion above.

Consider: it's common practice to have /srv/$HOSTNAME for services
hosted by the system. Let's say somebody's internal web applications
hostname happens to be 'webapps' (and they decided not to bother with
the FQDN in the directory). Now you've just trampled over their local
configuration. If anything, /srv/www is even more likely to be already
in use.

Once something has been declared to be site-specific, you can't go back
on that.

Now, helper packages that maintained a *generic* location would be fine.

Bug#295760: Uploading ming to Debian

  ES Hi,
  ES I was toying around with ming at some time, but development had stalled.
  ES I was interested in the perl extension, and when development picked up

  ES I dislike PHP (most php apps are really bad code, but with fancy looks),
  ES so I dropped it. I don't want to maintain a package I don't use myself.

Thanks for your reply, I understand all your points. As it seems that
both me and Klaus need libming, I would consider working together on
the packaging.

I'm short in time too, but I can do something. Klaus, what do you

Bug#315383: evince: disturbed pdf display

 Some people managed to create pdf file which looks completely messed up in
 evince. It's also disturbed in xpdf, so the root of the problem might be in
 some shared library. The document looks fine in Acrobat Reader 7.
 I have no clue why this is the case (I did not search for bug duplicates),
 but maybe you'll find this document (attached) useful in tracing the problem.

Can you describe your issue with this document or send a screenshot? It
seems to be rendered correctly here.

Bug#315393: Problems installing Sarge on OldWorld 7300/200 Mac

2005-06-22 Thread Jan-Benedict Glaw
Package:debian-installer
Architecture:   powerpc
Flavour:pmac

Hi!

I got two 7300/200 these days and tried to install Debian Stable (sarge)
on them. Looking through the ppc-specific installation instructions, I
want to give some hints/bugs/wishlist items (note that this box isn't
pre-installed with MacOS, so I cannot just copy over the hd-install
stuff, no BootX, no StuffIt, no nothing):

  * The 7300/200 seems to not be able to boot off a CD-ROM, at least I
failed to do that using

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/3.1_r0a/powerpc/iso-cd/debian-31r0a-powerpc-businesscard.iso
Maybe I just used a wrong boot command line, but the install
instructions are somewhat poor describing the actual boot process
(note: I just got these Macs and never ever touched any Mac before).

  * Booting from floppy images

(ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/installer-powerpc/current/images/powerpc/floppy-2.4/*)
   also didn't work. The {ofonly,}boot.img floppies are just always
   ejected.

  * The install manual references a boot-floppy-hfs image, but that's
not in the sarge installer directory. Though, it exists in woody's
installer.

  * After failing with installing sarge, I tried to install woody. The
boot-floppy-hfs.img boots (boot floppy:vmlinux), the installation
basically works (http://www.biccard.com/alan/7200/7200boot.html).
Even the Quik part was fixed (contraty to the document above), nice.
However, woody's installer kernel (2.2.x) seems to have some trouble
with the MESH SCSI controller. On both of my Macs, tested with three
different HDDs, I got into I/O errors sooner or later (sometimes
during debootstrap'ing the initial installation, sometimes later
on).
   Unfortunately, it doesn't work to initially boot with
boot-floppy-hfs and then continue with sarge's boot/root/driver
floppies. These do have devfs issues and are unwilling to work.
   Woody's install document

(ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-powerpc/current/README.txt)
even references the SRM console, so it's obviously just copied from
the Alpha port and was fixed in some places afterwards.

So I'd like to get sarge boot floppies (or a CD, if the 7300/200 can
boot off it) to install Debian on this box. Also, the documentation
should be a bit more verbose especially about the boot command and
eventually ask the user to first reset the OF variables...

Thanks, JBG

#. Type: multiselect

msgid
localepurge will remove all locale files from your system but the ones for
the language codes you select now. Usually two character locales like \de\
or \pt\ rather than \de_DE\ or \pt_BR\ contain the major portion of
localizations. So please select both for best support of your national
language settings. The entries from /etc/locale.gen will be preselected if
no prior configuration has been successfully completed.
msgstr

Bug#313378: Ubuntu package

2005-06-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

FYI, I tested 0.2.36 as well and it works just fine with ALSA 1.0.9. I
updated and uploaded the Breezy package, you can grab it from
archive.ubuntu.com if you want to.

The packaging is a mess (lots of changes in the package diff.gz), but
I did not want to diverge from Debian so much, so I left it as messy
as it was before (maybe a bit more, though). A proper cleanup would
require a patch system and the submission of bug fixes upstream.

Thanks and have a nice day,

Bug#315162: reprepro doesn't remove lockfile under certain circumstances

2005-06-22 Thread Bernhard R. Link
* Sven Mueller [EMAIL PROTECTED] [050620 23:53]:
 Package: reprepro
 Version: 0.3-1
 Severity: minor

 I noticed that reprepro doesn't properly remove its lockfile under two
 circumstances:
 1) If the configuration file distributions contains an unknown field,
for example Updates: instead of Update:. It outputs an error
message which correctly gives a workaround to the mistake, but it
creates and doesn't remove the lockfile.

That is an error in 3-1 which was fixed in 3-2, which I was too late to
get into sarge. (But the binaries should be installable on sarge without
problems)

 2) If reprepro is terminated by CTRL-C, it doesn't remove the lockfile
either.

Ctrl-C support is not yet implemented at all. I fear I will have to use
another error handling to support it. Better not terminate it this way.

Hochachtungsvoll,
Bernhard R. Link

In finally, I am a segmentation fault and I can't launch this program.

If I see in my /home/shingara/.config, I don't find the XDG_CONFIG_HOME
variable.

Hi,

since .config is a file in the present case, and not a directory, it
causes different troubles as mentionned above.

I then suggest that:
 * check the type of files with a `test`-like function: regular files,
   symlinks, directory...
 * be more explicit in the second message. Example: tell the (full)
   location of the target file, which could help finding out the
   problem. And indicate the error number/description could help too
   (then no more use playing with strace ;-)).

I think that this bug should be tagged Upstream.

Hope it helps.

Best regards,

Hi,

I found with Cyril Brulebois where the problem was. In fact my file
.config is my kernel config. This name is the default name of a kernel
config. Since it's a hidden file, it can easily be forgotten in the home
directory. I moved this file and my problem was then closed, a directory
.config/ made with the xfce file's configuration.

This problem can be frequent, and I agree with Cyril Brulebois's
proposition.
