Bug#359763: Bug #359763 and about:config prefs
Where are these font.name and about:config preferences and how do I change them? I can edit about:config in firefox, but I see nothing about it in thunderbird and grepping the thunderbird directory for it turns up nothing (except for this message). In the fonts dialog of the thunderbird preferences, the monospace font is set to monospace for the western language/charset. But, there is no unicode/utf-8 choice here so I don't know how one would set fonts for utf-8 charsets. -jason Alexander Sack - Debian Bugmail wrote: Hi, thanks for the info!! We still need evidence of the various claims about -fpic vs -fPIC on s390. Although I found some evidence of -fPIC being needed in some cases elsewhere (and even more so on s390x than s390), could not even find the GOT size. I am unable to reproduce this, audacity starts just fine here. Greetings, Joost Damad Thanks for looking into this; Audacity still doesn't launch and the same error message is shown. AFAIK it's on a standard testing system (except for the Marillat and tux.org repositories for non-free multimedia stuff) using a custom kernel from Debian sources. However on receiving your email I tried launching a bunch of other applications and found that xmms is also failing to launch and gives a very similar message: Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) serial 232 error_code 8 request_code 2 minor_code 0 with only the indicated number being different. I'd only be guessing, but does that mean the problem is with some dependency of both of these packages? Do you you know what these messages refer to? It's possible that some part of my installation is dodgy; I have tried reinstalling Audacity, xmms and all the gtk libraries I could find, but no change. In any case, would I be correct in saying that this bug (if it is a bug) is not specific to Audacity? If so, where should I go from here? As I cannot reproduce the bug, and I fear it is not directly an audacity problem, and I also think the problem does not happen in unstable, this bug actually has as effect that audacity has been removed from testing. It may be a good idea to mark the bug as unreproducable and lower its priority. This would at least allow audacity to enter testing again. What do you think? Bug#361304: vino: causes xorg to take 100% cpu
Can you try the unstable version (it'll pull a number of libs from unstable as well) and see if it's any better? This version is using libxdamage, so I have reasons to think it will. Done. xorg CPU usage is 12-20% now with a client connected vs. 0-1% with no client connected. Better, but still seems high. Additionally the display (on the client) updates very slowly now - windows kind of shuffle over the screen when moved, etc ... Of course there is lag with the testing version as well, but not that bad. Any other ideas? Or is such performance expected at this point in vino development and I should try other remote-control means? Thanks, C.

Bug#361024: about glibc bug(?)

So please don't claim this is a glibc bug. The test program included in #226716 fails under 2.4 kernel and works as expected under 2.6 kernel. So I think this is glibc bug (unless that program is buggy itself). The version of libc6 package I use is 2.3.6-4. Bug#359909: subversion: FTBFS: Ruby test fails
[Daniel Schepler] The patch didn't help. After some more investigation, I found that installing official i386 ruby1.8 packages fixed the test failure, and in fact if I rebuild ruby1.8 locally adding -fno-strict-aliasing to the CFLAGS, the rebuilt packages also fix the test failure. Thank you very much! On the basis of those hints, I obtained access to a Debian powerpc box this morning and did some tests. My findings: at least on powerpc, ruby1.8 compiled with gcc 4.0.3 works whereas ruby1.8 compiled with gcc 4.0.2 does not. Of course, the version in sid was compiled with gcc 4.0.2. Interestingly, -fno-strict-aliasing didn't seem to have any effect, only the compiler version. (I'm talking about ruby1.8 itself - we've always used -fno-strict-aliasing for the subversion ruby _bindings_.) Steve Langasek has scheduled ruby1.8 to be rebuilt on powerpc, so we'll soon see whether my observations are correct. Thanks again, Peter signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#361372: statd: calls /etc/init.d/inetd directly from postinst
Package: statd Version: 1.0.1-6.1 Severity: serious Justification: missing dependency When testing statd with piuparts, I get the following error: Setting up statd (1.0.1-6.1) ... /var/lib/dpkg/info/statd.postinst: line 5: /etc/init.d/inetd: No such file or directory dpkg: error processing statd (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127 The chroot that piuparts builds for testing does not contain the inetd program, and therefore also doesn't contain the /etc/init.d/inetd script. This may indicate a missing dependency, but it might be that calling the init.d script only if it is there is a better fix than depending on inetd. We have, after all, several inetd implementations in Debian. Also, you shouldn't call the init.d script directly, but via invoke-rc.d. Bug#361024: about glibc bug(?)
Sheplyakov Alexei wrote: On Fri, 07 Apr 2006 19:17:03 +0200, Aurelien Jarno wrote: glibc does support TLS on all kernels (even non-linux ones), if there is the corresponding kernel support. So please don't claim this is a glibc bug. The test program included in #226716 fails under 2.4 kernel and works as expected under 2.6 kernel. So I think this is glibc bug (unless that program is buggy itself). The version of libc6 package I use is 2.3.6-4. Ok let's take an example then: On a 2.4 kernel: #mount none /sys -t sysfs mount: unknown filesystem type 'sysfs' # On a 2.6 kernel: #mount none /sys -t sysfs # As you can see the first one fails with 2.4 kernel and successes with a 2.6 kernel. Can you conclude that mount is buggy? No it's just some missing features in the 2.4 kernel, just as for TLS and the glibc. The only problem in bug #226716 is that the glibc should refuse to execute such programs instead of silently failing. But in the case of the current bug, this is actually the case, it says cannot handle TLS data. So this is not a bug in the glibc. Bye, Aurelien -- .''`. However in the sgt version, all squares need to be connected, not just the clients. Could the other choice be allowed as well? I'm afraid I don't understand quite what you're asking for. Do you want: 1. The option of a fixed server that does not need to be rotated. 2. The possibility of blocks with no wire or component. Bug#361375: tetex-base: [dvips] Unable to create fonts for commands from the textcomp package
Package: tetex-base Version: 3.0-17 Severity: normal Hello, I compiled a latex file with arrow symbols from the textcomp package. Bug#350704: libgdchart-gd2 FTBFS
Hi, Since the libgdchart-gd2 maintainer hasn't responded to your request for more information, let me fill in my best guesses. I think there used to be a package literally called libgd2-dev, which has since been dropped from the archive; if true, this could explain how the package was able to build before. It appears libgdchart-gd2 replaced the libgd2-dev output, whatever it was, with libgd2-noxpm-dev | libgd2-xpm-dev in both -dev packages, so that's probably a reasonable dependency string to use. Thanks, Daniel, for clarifying this. And sorry for being so unresponsive. I have been busy with real life, and with other issues regarding yaird and linux-26. I agree with Daniel that binary dependency resolving to libgd2-dev should be adjusted to use libgd2-noxpm-dev | libgd2-xpm-dev instead. Sorry for a slow response, I just noticed. Thanks for the feedback. To me, it might just be easier if libgd2-noxpm-dev, libgd2-xpm-dev had both Provides: and Conflicts: against libgd2-dev. There is only Conflicts:; is there any reason there is no Provides? regards, junichi -- [EMAIL PROTECTED],netfort.gr.jp} Debian Project -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#361385: xscreensaver-command -watch should UNBLANK before the user unlocks
Package: xscreensaver Version: 4.24-1 Severity: wishlist Hi, I'm using xscreensaver-command -watch to force my radeon to blank the screen when xscreensaver starts. When I lock the screen, the radeon get blanked. My problem is that when I come back and want to unlock, the screen gets unblanked _after_ I enter my password, which basically means I have to enter my password blindly. I'd like xscreensaver-command -watch to send UNBLANK before we enter the password to unlock the screen, and eventually send something like UNLOCK after the password is entered. Bug#361386: par2: support for split files
Package: par2 Version: 0.4-7 Severity: wishlist QuickPAR, the dominant win32 par2 utility, supports creation of 'split files'. Basically, if a single file is to be protected it splits it into a number of equal parts with .001, ..002, etc. suffixes. Conversely it will automatically consider and join such files during recovery. A workaround is something like 'cat filename.0?? filename par2 v filename.par2' but this is getting tedious as this style becomes more prevalent on usenet. Could such functionality be added to par2? Bug#357971: [PATCH] Allow the image to be further processed with external tools and remove dependency to arial.ttf
Greetings, My name is Cyril Bouthors and I'm the new Debian maintainer of camE. First of all, let me thank you for your great work you've done for the last years about camE , it's a great soft that I've been using for quite a while now. We had feedback from Debian users and they want two little modifications to camE: 1) Allow the image to be further processed with external tools by moving the action_post_shot code to after save_image() This can be achieved by applying the patch called action_post_shot-after-save.patch into CVS. More information can be found at http://bugs.debian.org/296954 2) remove the dependency to arial.ttf, which is a non-free font provided by Microsoft under a specific and proprietary license. This can be achieved by applying the patch called free_font.patch into CVS, which basically replaces arial.ttf by FreeSans.ttf More information can be found at http://bugs.debian.org/357971 Please have a look at the attachments. I hope you'll include them into the CVS soon and into the next upstream release. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any suggestion or remark. Bug#361382: util-vserver: overwrites admins choice for /etc/vservers/.defaults/vdirbase
Package: util-vserver Version: 0.30.210-5 Severity: normal I've manually changed the symblic link /etc/vservers/.defaults/vdirbase to point to a partition with enough free space. But after every update of the package this gets reset to the default /var/lib/vservers. Is there a better way to configure this permanently? I could imagine two possible solutions to preserve admins modifications to /etc/vservers/.defaults/vdirbase: * create the symlink in postinst if it does not exist, remove on purge * add a low priority debconf question for the location and use this and if the directory specified does not exist, ask the user whether it should be created. It may be desirable to add this to fbi's parameters in the fbgs script or automatically enable it if -P is present, my patch does not do either. regards, Jan -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-k7 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=de_DE (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages fbi depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-3GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libcurl3 7.15.3-1 Multi-protocol file transfer libra ii libexif12 0.6.13-4 library to parse EXIF files ii libfontconfig12.3.2-1.1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.1.10-1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libjpeg62 6b-12 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libpcd2 1.0.1 A library for reading PhotoCD imag ii libpng12-01.2.8rel-5 PNG library - runtime ii libtiff4 3.8.0-3Tag Image File Format (TIFF) libra ii libungif4g4.1.4-2shared library for GIF images (run ii zlib1g1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime fbi recommends no packages. -- no debconf information diff -ru fbida-2.01.orig/fbgs fbida-2.01/fbgs --- fbida-2.01.orig/fbgs 2004-03-28 13:32:16.0 +0200 +++ fbida-2.01/fbgs 2006-04-08 12:29:19.0 +0200 @@ -21,7 +21,7 @@ -xxl) gsopts=$gsopts -r150x150 shift ;; - -q | -a) + -q | -a | -k) fbiopts=$fbiopts $1 shift ;; diff -ru fbida-2.01.orig/fbi.c fbida-2.01/fbi.c --- fbida-2.01.orig/fbi.c 2004-06-30 15:41:54.0 +0200 +++ fbida-2.01/fbi.c 2006-04-08 12:20:29.0 +0200 @@ -1103,6 +1103,8 @@ int editable = 0, once = 0; int need_read; int i, arg, key; +int first = 1; +int keepzoom = 0; char *info, *desc, *filelist; char linebuffer[128]; @@ -1145,6 +1147,7 @@ editable= GET_EDIT(); backup = GET_BACKUP(); preserve= GET_PRESERVE(); +keepzoom= GET_KEEP_ZOOM(); steps = GET_SCROLL(); timeout = GET_TIMEOUT(); @@ -1203,9 +1206,10 @@ sprintf(linebuffer,loading %s ...,fcurrent-name); status_update(img,linebuffer, NULL); fimg = read_image(fcurrent-name); - scale = 1; + if (first || !keepzoom) + scale = 1; if (fimg) { - if (autoup || autodown) { + if ((autoup || autodown) (first || !keepzoom)) { scale = auto_scale(fimg); if (scale 1 !autodown) scale = 1; @@ -1230,6 +1234,7 @@ } if (img) info = make_info(fimg,scale); + first = 0; switch (key = svga_show(img, timeout, desc, info, arg)) { case KEY_DELETE: if (editable) { diff -ru fbida-2.01.orig/fbi.man fbida-2.01/fbi.man --- fbida-2.01.orig/fbi.man 2004-06-08 10:36:57.0 +0200 +++ fbida-2.01/fbi.man 2006-04-08 12:25:37.0 +0200 @@ -76,6 +76,9 @@ .B -p preserve timestamps (when editing images). .TP +.B -k +keep zoom factor when switching between images +.TP .B --comments Display comment tags (if present) instead of the filename. Bug#310689: cdrecord fails to detect ATA device with -scanbus
This is a generell problem caused by the unwillingness of the Linux kernel maintainters to provide useful interfaces for generic SCSI passthrugh. The Linux kernel maintainers are unwilling to provide an orthogonal way of sending SCSI commands to any type of device that speaks SCSI in a single address space. Note that this has not been the case in the past, so it seems that some narrow minded people are fighting their private war against usability. If you like to know names where to complain: Linus Torvalds and Jens Axboe are the prople who are mainly responsible for the degradation of usability. But in the case of the current bug, this is actually the case, it says cannot handle TLS data. The problem is that changes in glibc break a lot of applications which used to work just fine. The worst thing is that backwards incompatible changes were not announced. There has been no change in the glibc on this side. The change is in *libstdc++6*. So this is not a bug in the glibc. The problem is that gdal has code to support 64-bit ODBC, but assumes that SQLLEN will be a #define -- which with UnixODBC, it isn't. The only reliable test for the presence of SQLLEN is therefore a configure test; but for Debian's purposes, the attached mini-patch should be sufficient. Bug#148194: debian-policy: Clarification needed regarding multi-line fields

From a lintian perspective, we're intentionally not checking for wrapped lines in the debian/control file because all of the tools cope. If worried about breakage in scripts that parse the .dsc and .changes files, I think the best thing to do would be to state that wrapping is permitted in the debian/control file, but not permitted (except for defined fields that already allow multiline values) in DEBIAN/control, .changes, or .dsc files. I believe lintian currently implements exactly this check. I can prepare text if there's general agreement that this is the right direction to go. Bug#357793: cdparanoia: Missing scsi generic interface
Daniel Baumann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Joerg Schilling wrote: I really don't understand why people still use something that is worse than cdda2wav. Because cdparanoia doesn't have the burden of an upstream author with a controversal social competence. cdparanoia of course has no burden of an upstram because there is no upstream activity since 5 years... Looking at Debian bug lists verifies that ~ 45% of all bugs are caused by the patches applied by Debian and another ~ 45% are caused by Linux Kernel bugs. The kernel problems only may be avoided by using other OS (FreeBSD, Solaris or any other OS where the problems of users are taken seriously). The burden coming from Debian maintainers that apply counter-produtive patches seems to be something for that I cannot provide no solution. But you are of course always free to use an unmodified original source to compile your software. For cdrtools, you get this at: ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/ I hope that Debian maintainers would first check binaries from original unmodified sources (soon after a bug report appears). In case that the problem is caused by a patch that comes from Debian, the patch should be removed (this would remove _all_ non Debian-packaging related patches soon). In case that the problem is caused by the Linux kernel I would expect help from Debian maintainers against the unwillingness of the Linux Kernel maintainers and in case of a rare bug in the original software, I would expect cooperation from the Debian maintainers [ For those who don't know, I'm speaking of #350739 and the discussion of JS on pkg-cdrtools-devel. ] You do not need to point me to the recent problems of the Debian legal management and I did already realize that you seem to be involved in these problems. I encourage you to read my comment at the end of this discussion (from Wed, 05 Apr 2006 17:20:59) in hope that you are willing to discuss things without prejudice.
