Bug#418007: xorg: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates review
Package: xorg Version: N/A Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Debian maintainer, On Saturday, March 17, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for xorg. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report. Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. Please try to avoid uploading xorg with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Monday, April 09, 2007, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until Saturday, April 21, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. On Sunday, April 22, 2007, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Bug#417976: [INTL:ka] XKB Georgian keyboard layouts
The patch has already been reported in upstream (freedekstop), just wanted to make sure it reaches Debian sooner. I'm not really sure that this will happen. When it comes at etch, it is now definitely too late given the planned release date (next week-end!)...and we can safely bet that, if the layout is fixed upstream, it will reach Debian lenny pretty soon. So, in short, if this bug has been reported upstream, I see a very low benefit in keeping it opened in Debian. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#418009: utmp.5 innaccurate re xterm, outdated re libc5
Package: manpages Version: 2.43-0 Severity: minor xdm(8) should not create a utmp record, because there is no assigned terminal. Letting it create one will result in errors, such as #fin# ger: cannot stat /dev/machine.dom#. It should create wtmp entries, though, just like ftpd(8) does. IIRC we _did_ have some breakage when xdm started adding utmp records, but that was long ago, and all fixed by now, and it does create utmp records now. So this paragraph is out of date. Note that the utmp struct from libc5 has changed in libc6. Because of this, binaries using the old libc5 struct will corrupt /var/run/utmp and/or /var/log/wtmp. Debian systems include a patched libc5 which uses the new utmp format. The problem still exists with wtmp since it’s accessed directly in libc5. Of course, Debian systems no longer contain a libc5 as of etch. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- no debconf information -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

There is always a problem to detect when a mirror is broken and when it is actualy setup bad. Given that an archive without Release file is quite unusable with the secure apt in etch anyway I think it is acceptable for debmirror to insist on them for full functionality too. Do you have any case where those files are actualy missing on purpose? Hopefully nobody does that anymore. stable amd64 woody amd64 anything pre-etch amd64 how about just a quick hack fix to ignore missing amd64 for stable (and woody too, i suppose), then? that's the most common cause for complaint with this particular bug - i only found it because i wanted to add 'stable' to my mirror at work and found that i can't if i am mirroring amd64 (which i am, because my servers at work are amd64 boxes). the problem will mostly go away, at least for debian's archive, when etch is released. very few people will still be mirroring sarge or woody at that point. craig -- craig sanders [EMAIL PROTECTED] BOFH excuse #67: descramble code needed from software company -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi, Thanks for reporting this bug. I will consider making exaile depend on only one of the two gstreamer packages. ARE YOU INSANE?!!!11 sorry, I lost it there... let me explain: First of all: there is the xfce4-taskmanager (dunno if it's in the debian repos yet) Second: Xfce4-panel is an xfce-core application. Adding the gnome-system-monitor launcher to it would be a death-sin. gnome-system-monitor depends on a lot of gnome-libs. using it with xfce kind of beats the purpose. (Running Xfce in 50MB of ram is really out of the question then) Third: The right-click menu has a clear purpose aswell: 1) on the panel, it is for adding and removing plugins. 2) on a window-button in the taskbar, it is for performing operations on that window (like closing it) Conclusion: There is absolutely no good reason to add this functionality to the panel. That's solved adding opt --noauthmd5. I think it should just check and if imapd doesn't know MD5 auth just don't use it, unless explicitly told to do so. Anyway, on 2nd try 1.217 tops at 153MB and completes without errors. So the OoM problem seems ironed out, thanks :) +150MB still looks quite a lot to me. Perhaps imapsync .deb maintainer should resync 'unstable' with upstream. thanks -- paolo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Hello, we discussed the problem of the syntax files a while ago, with Fathi Boudra, and concluded that we as kile devs ensure that kde/trunk, kde/branch/3.5, kile/trunk and kile/branch/1.9 always have the same version of latex.xml. So any update of kdelibs on your side should include the newest latex.xml from the kde svn. But in the last update of kdelibs-data, version: 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-8 (Debian sid) is latex.xml v1.23 included and not the newest version of the kde 3.5 branch (which is v1.25 and was committed 5 weeks) ago. So how can we ensure in the future that users get the newest syntax files? Thanks Thomas Braun member of kile dev team -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#418023: Interfaces managed by NetworkManager have MTU 576
Package: network-manager Version: 0.6.4-7 Severity: important I noticed that all interfaces managed by NetworkManager seem to have an MTU of 576 bytes (the minimum). This seems to have a negative effect on download speed, or certainly not a positive one. As nm_system_get_mtu() in src/backends/NetworkManagerDebian.c returns 0, NetworkManager doesn't seem to set the MTU explicitly though, so I'm not sure where the default is coming from. I verified that hacking the above function to return 1500 results in interfaces managed by NetworkManager having an MTU of 1500, with a line like Apr 6 12:18:52 thor NetworkManager: information^ISetting MTU of interface 'sungem' to 1500 in syslog. --- System information. --- Architecture: powerpc Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-rc5 Debian Release: lenny/sid 500 unstablemirror.switch.ch 500 stable security.debian.org 102 experimentalftp.ch.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed =-+-= libc6(= 2.3.5-1) | 2.3.6.ds1-13 libdbus-1-3 (= 0.94) | 1.0.2-1 libdbus-glib-1-2(= 0.73) | 0.73-1 libgcrypt11(= 1.2.2) | 1.2.3-2 libglib2.0-0 (= 2.12.9) | 2.12.11-1 libgpg-error0(= 1.4) | 1.4-2 libhal1 (= 0.5) | 0.5.8.1-9 libiw28 (= 28) | 28-1 libnl1-pre6 | 1.0~pre6-4 libnm-util0 | 0.6.4-7 iproute | 20061002-4 iputils-arping| 3:20020927-6 dhcdbd(= 1.12-2) | 2.0-3 lsb-base (= 2.0-6) | 3.1-23.1 wpasupplicant (= 0.4.8) | 0.6.0~cvs20070224-1 dbus(= 0.60) | 1.0.2-1 hal (= 0.5.7.1) | 0.5.8.1-9 ifupdown | 0.6.8 adduser | 3.102 -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://tungstengraphics.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer
Bug#418016: Recent security update of libx11-6 (1.0.3-7) made opera segfault

Bug#418034: console-data: Greek 8x8 font (iso07.f08.psf) does not contain Greek characters!
Package: console-data Version: 2:1.01-7 Severity: normal Tags: patch l10n Hello there, I am emailing from Greece. The fonts `iso07.f16', `iso07.f14' and `iso07.f08' have (as expected) exactly the same character table (encoding). I tested `iso07.f16' and `iso07.f14' and they display correctly. However, `iso07.f08' is completely wrong. The characters in there are not Greek, that's for sure! I drew it with `cfe' and I send it to you as an attachment. I hear somebody has done this in the past but I couldn't find any fonts (or maybe I didn't search well enough). Anyway, here it is. It may not be the best possible font, but it is correct. I tried to mimic the style of the Latin characters in the font. I am using Debian version 3.1 . I was using version `2002.12.04dbs-49' of the console-data package but I downloaded the latest version (2:1.01-7) from the unstable release and the font is still wrong! The 3500/350 kbps explains me why it takes so long (hours compared to 15 min in my case). Right. Although it's not really a slow link. However, i am a bit suprised that transfering several files at once is longer than transfering only one. I was thinking that you get a better time transfering more file on a LAN and that it makes no difference transfering on a slow link... Do you have any idea ? In general I would tend to agree. However, this only applies if unison used separate SSH connections for each transfer. This does not appear to be the case, so it transfers everything in a single SSH tunnel, and thus it cannot go any faster, really. I am not talking about syncing per se. I am talking about the first time directories are transferred. You alway sync with unison... It is a file synchroniser ;-) Even the first time it is syncing. Just making sure you know what I mean. Anyway, i hope that i have understand your problem. Here is the solution i will propose to upstream: * implement a flag/option max-simultaneous-file-transfer which will limit the number of file transfered in parallel * document that this option help to speed up transfer on slow link * document that this option can reduce the risk of an interruption/resume by processing a more step-by-step transfer, since after having finished to transfer a unit you won't loose it after resuming. Do you agree ? Yes, sounds great. Bug#418016: Recent security update of libx11-6 (1.0.3-7) made opera segfault

FWIW, this is the bit of the patch to XCreateImage which causes the problem: + } else if (image_bytes_per_line min_bytes_per_line) { + return 0; Seems pretty clear to me that Opera has *a* bug, since the failure here is caused by XCreateImage returning a null image due to bad arguments, and Opera failing to check the return value before dereferencing it. FWIW, if I change this 'return 0' to a 'sleep(20)' and attach to the process, I get the following backtrace: #0 0xf752f03b in nanosleep () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #1 0xf752ee8e in sleep () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #2 0xf76764ae in XCreateImage () from /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 #3 0x0865efee in ?? This is with opera_9.10-20061214.6-shared-qt_en_i386.deb for Debian testing. FWIW, the problematic invocation has an 'image_bytes_per_line' value of '3' and a 'width' value of '1', but the bits-per-pixel for the display is 32 (i.e., 4 bytes), so the check fails. The zeroth problem was booting. Somewhere in the help where you find it right away it says to use noacpi if the system hangs. I tried that and it didn't work. In another spot more buried (I think in the special parameter section) it says use acpi=off. Well, only the acpi=off worked. 1. The first problem to crop up was with the language and timezone. I live in Germany, but am a native english speaker and wish to install in English. As soon as you've selected the English language, you can only choose timezones from the USA and it's territories. Luckily I was still *allowed* to choose a german keyboard! Please try thinking less for the user and allow hir to choose whichever timezone s/he desires...I'm sure most people know which timezone they live in! 2. The second problem wasn't too much of a problem, just irritating: when detecting disks, the cd, and the network card, it *kept* asking me whether I wanted to install the floppy module. I would deselect it and and continue, and in the next step it would again ask me about the floppy module. Other than that, the detection of cd and network card worked ok. 3. The third problem was with partitioning the harddrive. You can tell it that you want to use a partition as an encrypted partition, but afterwards it doesn't do anything with it and you can't tell it where you want it mounted. I don't see what this option really does, since you have to luksFormat it, etc. by hand afterwards anyway. It would be nice if the installer would support encrypted partitions where you could select options and a mount point and have the installer set everything up. Especially encrypted swap is easy, it just needs an entry in /etc/crypttab and an appropriate entry in /etc/fstab, so encrypted swap should be an option too! 4. The fourth and worst problem came when I tried to reboot my new system...didn't work at all, no grub screen, nothin. Had no idea why. Tried using the install cd as rescue cd, but it wasn't much of a rescue, it just wanted to re-install. I re-installed twice and fiddled with the bios. Luckily, at some point I accidentally booted with my sata1 hd disconnected and it started grub (!) but couldn't find a bootable image. Then I understood: grub had been installing itself to /dev/hdb, even though I hadn't installed any of the system there (hdb was my old hd from my old system which I had attached to transfer data from). There was never any question in the install about where grub should install itself other than to the master boot record but didn't mention which drive, and it didn't occur to me that it would install itself preferentially to hdb instead of to sata1 when I wasn't installing the system there and had configured no mount points from hdb! Big Bummer and big waste of time! The other errors were no big deal, but this really caused me some grief! -j -- Feel free - 10 GB Mailbox, 100 FreeSMS/Monat ... Bug#418044: cupssys: cups constantly updates the printcap file, preventing laptop_mode to spin down the disk
Package: cupssys Severity: important Since the last update on my laptop, cupsys keeps the disk spinning. I tracked this down and identified that it writes its printcap file regulary (and likely with a fsync()/fdatasync(), else it won't keep the disk spinning). In my configuration cups logs to syslog, I did not test if the logging would cause the same. A workaround is to disable printcap generation in cups. But this is certainly not a good solution. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.20.4 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. On Thu, Mar 30, 2006, Holger Duerer wrote: I don't agree that the data file has to be so large. Just removing the needles whitespace (empty lines, leading space used for indentation) remove a substantial amount of cruft. Not including translations that are the same as the original name itself, makes a dramatic reduction (down to about 6.4MB). Thanks for your interesting comment! I've opened an upstream bug against intltool-merge which is used to generate Locations.xml from po-locations/*.po. I tried stripping spaces as you suggested, but this only saved some 16% at the expense of making the file unreadable in my text editor. :-) gzipping the file made for a 86% compression, which is way more interesting. (Removing blanks before gzipping only made a 0.7% compression difference). If you have some XSL powers and removing translated strings identical to the untranslated template truly compresses the file, I'm interested in hooking this in the build process. I expect gzipping will still give better results, so I would take a patch to implement gzipping as well. :) Bye, -- Loïc Minier
Bug#413041: bug reproduces in standalone jasper
Hi Sam and Larry, Sam Hocevar wrote: I don't know what went wrong the first time, I tried again and Electric Fence found it. Please test. It works for me on both broken2.jp2 and broken4.jp2. Your patch works, with all broken*.jp2 files. Here is a slightly better one that checks the numstepsizes value a bit before and returns an error instead of using assert(). Thanks for all your work on this! Your last patch looks good, and I could upload it right away. So, RMs, is there anything special I should care about when uploading this lib (besides the usual QA-checks) at this stage of release? I would just upload to unstable and ask you to let it into etch. Bug#418045: sarge to etch upgrade report
Package: upgrade-reports Hello, summary: upgrade went fine, except that the network connection broke down during upgrade, see below. today I upgraded my home server from sarge to etch. This is my dialout router with the following services: ppp, postfix, firewall, apache, dns, ntp, dhcp also these packages are installed and should work: tiger, blosxom and ddclient. I logged in from my laptop via ssh. This laptop receives its ip address via dhcp from this server, with these settings in dhcpd.conf: default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; it looks like that during upgrade of netbase the laptop lost its ip address but couldn't get a new one, so my ssh session lost connection, the problem was that i couldn't log in again, as ssh refused the connection at that state. This happened at the question for /etc/services. Fortunately I also could log in on the console. Some minor issues: while removing fontconfig: fc-cache: error while loading shared libraries: libfontconfig.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory while setting up udev: sed: can't read /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules: No such file or directory As far as i can see all the services are working again, so I'm happy :) Good work!
