Bug#422874: util-vserver: Should recommend vserver-debiantools
Hi No I do not think it is off-topic. However suggest it would be a good thing. Regards, // Ola This might be rather off-topic for this bug report, but I still haven't understood what the purpose of vserver-debiantools is. What does it do that util-vserver doesn't? (Especially given the initpost script Hollow wrote for 0.30.213.) I was going to say the same thing -- Most of what vserver-debiantools does is rolled into the debian build method in 0.30.213. If there is anything that vserver-debiantools has that isn't in util-vserver, it should be identified so we can pull it in so we can have one set of utilities, rather than multiple accomplishing the same tasks. The purpose of vserver-debiantools was to make it possible to install a Debian vserver. In the beginning there were no support for that at all, so that is why it was written (by Paul Sladen I think), and then packaged by me and I continued the development of it. The following features exist in vserver-debiantools: * Package caching, which means that you can reuse downloaded packages from one creation of a vserver to the next. * strip a server You can take a normal Debian server and run stripserver on it to make it useful in vserver environment. * Automatical removal of packages not very suitable for a vserver environment. * Automatical removal of a number of init functions. * Configurable mirror location. * Generation of a number of files in /etc, like reduced inittab, etc. * Randomized crontab so that not all vservers execute the cron at the same time. * Generation of a vserver, that is actually suitable for real booting, i.e. over NFS. The reason behind this is that you may want to maintain NFS bootable computers within a vserver environment to correct a number of faults. I assume that a couple (or all) of these features exists already, but I do not know if all exists or not. The main reason however why I keep this package is for backwards compatibility. Some people, including myself are used to this way of creating a vserver. newvserver --hostname xx --ip x.y.z.e --domain x.y.com I think the last thing is the main reason. If all the listed features, from above is already in util-vserver then I do not think we should suggest vserver-debiantools. However if util-vserver do not have all the features above (except for the backwards compatible newvserver command of course) then I think it is useful to have a suggestion of that package. The reason why I do not want to recommend vserver-debiantools is that I know that building a vserver is working quite well just by using util-vserver at its own. Bug#423141: Ratpoison bad build?
Package: ratpoison Version: 1.4.1-3 Severity: normal In the current binary package of ratpoison, it is possible to trigger an abort() by opening many tabs in Opera (www.opera.com), and hitting C-leftarrow, C-rightarrow (switch tabs), and C-t w repeatedly in quick succession. The gdb backtrace shows abort() being triggered somewhere inside xrealloc(), indicating some kind of memory corruption. However, I built a local copy of ratpoison with debugging symbols included, and could not trigger the bug. I rebuilt with dpkg-buildpackage and could not trigger the bug either. Perhaps the binary in the uploaded package wasn't correctly built somehow? --T -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#416512: removed disk md-device
On Wednesday May 9, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Neil Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007.04.02.0953 +0200]: Hmmm... this is somewhat awkward. You could argue that udev should be taught to remove the device from the array before removing the device from /dev. But I'm not convinced that you always want to 'fail' the device. It is possible in this case that the array is quiescent and you might like to shut it down without registering a device failure... Hmm, the the kernel advised hotplug to remove the device from /dev, but you don't want to remove it from md? Do you have an example for that case? Until there is known to be an inconsistency among the devices in an array, you don't want to record that there is. Suppose I have two USB drives with a mounted but quiescent filesystem on a raid1 across them. I pull them both out, one after the other, to take them to my friends place. I plug them both in and find that the array is degraded, because as soon as I unplugged on, the other was told that it was now the only one. Not good. Best to wait for an IO request that actually returns an errors. Maybe an mdadm command that will do that for a given device, or for all components of a given array if the 'dev' link is 'broken', or even for all devices for all array. mdadm --fail-unplugged --scan or mdadm --fail-unplugged /dev/md3 Ok, so one could run this as cron script. Neil, may I ask if you already started to work on this? Since we have the problem on a customer system, we should fix it ASAP, but at least within the next 2 or 3 weeks. If you didn't start work on it yet, I will do... No, I haven't, but it is getting near the top of my list. If you want a script that does this automatically for every array, something like: for a in /sys/block/md*/md/dev-* do if [ -f $a/block/dev ] then : still there else echo faulty $a/state echo remove $a/state fi done should do what you want. Package: vpnc Version: 0.3.3+SVN20051028-3 Hello! In the script vpnc-script in function do_ifconfig there is only ifconfig called, but ifconfig is without path. Bug#423152: claws-mail: unusable for me without maildir plugin
Package: claws-mail Version: 2.9.1-1+b1 Severity: important First I would like to thank you for packaging claws-mail for Debian. It is (still) my prefered mailer. Also feel free to downgrade this bug if you consider so. As stated in the subject, for me the package is totaly unusable as I have all mail in Maildirs and without the updated maildir-plugin it won't even start. I know there are ways around this (like setting up a local IMAP server, or downgrading to the version available in your repo), but I started using mutt instead (the whole point of having Maildirs was to be able to access them with various mailers, GUI or TUI). I am getting more and more comfortable with mutt so you might loose one very dedicated user if the maildir-plugin is not packaged soon :) Regards, Andrei -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.20-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages claws-mail depends on: ii libaspell15 0.60.5-1GNU Aspell spell-checker runtime l ii libc62.5-7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcompfaceg11:1.5.2-4 Compress/decompress images for mai ii libetpan11 0.49-3 mail handling library ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.12-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnomeprint2.2-0 2.18.0-2The GNOME 2.2 print architecture - ii libgnomeprintui2.2-0 2.18.0-2GNOME 2.2 print architecture User ii libgtk2.0-0 2.10.12-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice6 1:1.0.3-2 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libldap2 2.1.30-13.4 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpango1.0-01.16.4-1Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpisock9 0.12.2-9library for communicating with a P ii libsm6 1:1.0.2-2 X11 Session Management library ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8e-4SSL shared libraries Versions of packages claws-mail recommends: ii aspell-en [aspell-dictionary] 6.0-0-5.1 English dictionary for GNU Aspell ii aspell-ro [aspell-dictionary] 0.50-2-3~2 The Romanian dictionary for GNU as pn claws-mail-i18n none (no description available) ii claws-mail-tools 2.9.1-1Helper and utility scripts for Cla pn metamail none (no description available) ii xfonts-100dpi 1:1.0.0-3 100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi 1:1.0.0-3 75 dpi fonts for X -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#423141: Ratpoison bad build?
* H. S. Teoh [EMAIL PROTECTED] [070510 08:26]: In the current binary package of ratpoison, it is possible to trigger an abort() by opening many tabs in Opera (www.opera.com), and hitting C-leftarrow, C-rightarrow (switch tabs), and C-t w repeatedly in quick succession. What architecture are you using? Does the backtrace stop with xrealloc or does it show where this is called? Could you try to run it in valgrind or put a xtrace between ratpoison and the server so I can see what opera is doing when switching tabs? Hochachtungsvoll, Bernhard R. Bug#423091: xtightvncviewer: tightvncviewer defaults to raw encoding when connecting to localhost
Hi Brad On Wed, May 09, 2007 at 01:21:52PM -0400, Brad Barnett wrote: Package: xtightvncviewer Version: 1.2.9-21 Severity: important When xtightvncviewer connects to localhost, it automatically assumes that it should use raw encoding. For example, the output states Same machine: preferring raw encoding. However, this should not be the case, as many people use ssh (often with -C) to get past firewalls and also because of ssh compression, improve the speed of VNC. Prior versions of tightvnc did not do this, and tightvnc should be able to dynamically switch encoding as it does for normal links anyhow. I agree that this is something that should be changed. Please remove this recently added featured, as it makes tightVNC extremely annoying in many circumstances, and it should have no problem switching to best-encoding on its own anyhow. I've created the package like this: apt-get install build-essential apt-get build-dep nfs-kernel-server apt-get source nfs-kernel-server cd nfs-utils* vi debian/changelog - add a changelog entry vi support/export/client.c - add the free(old); line debian/rules binary cd .. dpkg -i nfs-kernel-server*.deb nfs-common*.deb I reproduced the problem on a test system like this: # On the server - mkdir /exports for i in testdir{a..z}; do mkdir /exports/$i echo /exports/$i *(rw,async,no_root_squash) /etc/exports done invoke-rc.d nfs-kernel-server restart - # On 10 systems I run the following script - #! /bin/bash SOURCE=testserver:/exports MOUNTPOINT=/tmp/mount DELAY=1 [[ -d $MOUNTPOINT ]] || mkdir $MOUNTPOINT while true; do for i in testdir{a..z} BOGUS; do mount $SOURCE/$i $MOUNTPOINT sleep $DELAY umount $MOUNTPOINT done done - On the server I run top sorted by memory usage. When rpc.mountd reaches approx 1 minute of cpu time, the memory usage has increased by 0.6%. If this bug is already fixed in new upstream versions (didn't check), do you think it's possible to backport the fix to stable and ask for it's inclusion in a stable point release? I believe it should be applicable, but I'm not sure if this is the bug you're actually seeing. Do you have tons of mounts and umounts? Should I repeat this with 1.0.12? Bug#423161: Few minor bugs and improvements
Package: tkabber Version: 0.10.0-1 Severity: minor Tags: patch Hi! I would like to report about few minor bugs in Tkabber packaging: 1) Currently Tkabber isn't hosted at http://www.jabberstudio.org/. Its download URL is now http://tkabber.jabber.ru/download 2) Respectively watch script doesn't work anymore. 3) Config files and XRDB examples are compressed now. To use them, user has to uncompress them and copy somewhere. I's say that it's inconvenient. 4) Since Tkabber artwork is changed I'd change tkabber.xpm also. 5) Menu file doesn't contain long title. In GNOME it leads to ugly empty tooltip. Attached patch contains possible solutions to these issues. Bug#411654: bootchartd only works if /bin/sh is bash
Hello Ziga, Ziga Mahkovec schrieb am Mon 07. May, 18:32 (+0200): On Sat, 2007-05-05 at 13:57 +0200, Jörg Sommer wrote: Yes, if you _use_ an initrd. What about mounting the proc filesystem in bootchartd? I've checked Debian's init scripts and they are aware of a mounted procfs—at least, because this _could_ happen on an initrd. I'm reluctant to have bootchartd mount /proc. It just seems too intrusive for a monitoring package. It might work fine on Debian, but there's a host of other distributions that would need to be tested. Do you plan a new release with this patch? Is svn.sf.net down? Bug#415910: bootchartd stops too early
Hello Ziga, I have another bug and would like to hear what you think about it: Michael Biebl schrieb am Fri 23. Mar, 00:55 (+0100): Package: bootchart Version: 0.9-4 Severity: normal /sbin/bootchartd contains the following lines in the wait_boot() function: # The processes we have to wait for local exit_proc=gdmgreeter gdm-binary kdm_greet kdm # early_login in FC4 starts gdm early, so fall back to mingetty local early_login=no grep -q early_login /proc/cmdline early_login=yes if [ $runlevel -eq 2 -o $runlevel -eq 3 -o $early_login = yes ]; then exit_proc=mingetty agetty rungetty getty fi Though, in Debian the display manager/X is started by default in runlevel 2. So we wrongly exit to early when using a display manager. Please also keep in mind, that gdm is by default run at S21 and Debian doesn't have a early_login variable. And indeed, I don't get the full boot process listed in the final bootchart.png. The cleanest solution imo would be to add a stop script stop-bootchartd which runs at /etc/rc(2345)/S99stop-bootchartd and which stops bootchartd instead of grepping for running processes. Do you think it's possible that wait_boot() checks if /var/run/bootchartd.pid becomes writable and then writes its PID there. Then a init script can send a signal to it after the boot process came to end. package binutils tags 274544 + patch thanks I have found what looks like a solution to this problem. Please see attached patch. The error is actually quite obvious when spotted; the function bfd_demangle, according to its documentation, is perfectly able to return NULL. I think it might be a good idea to send the bug upstream; I am a little concerned that this might not be the best solution, mainly because this solution would not work in the 2.16.1cvs20060413-1 version, where a different variant of this problem occurred. Right. Through this it cannot be removed even if another style is installed. Right. This is suboptimal but intentional. I suggest to improve the dependencies a little bit. My suggestion is not basedon to much knowledge, so please look carefully: I am providing a suggestive patch which binds openoffice.org-common to openoffice.org-style-default and adds a provideto the packages openoffice.org-style-crystal and openoffice.org-style-tango, which are the KDE and Gnome default styles. By that, on a KDE or Gnome system, the andromeda style can be removed. Correct. But you oversee that on systems where GNOME, KDE and something else installed the *user* chooses what to use by gdm/kdm or whatever. And the tango style only is default on GNOME and the crystal style is only in KDE. The Problem now is, when you only have tango or crystal installed (and not andromeda) and you use something else than GNOME or KDE (Xfce fits in the GNOME case) you get *no* icons but text in the toolbar. To fix it, you could cherry-pick a858c006fae17 == tags/v1.5.2-rc0~70^2 (or revert 42905294de). (Actually this is not a patch, but IMHO it's as good.) Bug#412437: Starting packaging...
owner 412437 [EMAIL PROTECTED] thanks Right now, I don't have much time to start with it, so plz, take it :) Ok, Thanks. I've taken ownership of the ITP bug and made a start. There's quite a bit to be done in packaging this: 1) The 'branding issue' The theme, name and icons all appear to be non-free. I don't expect any amount of negotiations will result in a compromise on the trademark issue that's acceptable to both parties short of a rebranding, a la icedove. There are user contributed themes available, so it should be fairly easy to produce something to work around these problems. Any good ideas for a name? Anyone handy in an SVG package care to make some icons and a theme to match the name? 2) Xulrunner Currently the build process tries to use its own patched version of xulrunner. This doesn't really make sense for Debian I don't think, since there is already an xulrunner in Debian that should in theory work on all the various architectures. I've had a quick look through the patches that are applied to the version of xulrunner used by songbird, and quite a few of them look like they'll fall under one of the following categories which means we don't need to worry about them: - Non-linux specific - e.g. bugSB738_mac_enableminimize-sb_0_2.patch is MacOS specific. - Already in Debian xulrunner - e.g. bug346843-sighandler-x86_64- sb_0_2.patch or similar I'm pretty sure is in the xulrunner patch set, and since it only controls the SIGSEGV handler it doesn't really matter much anyway. I'll check up on this one anyway. - Some of them will require further investigations - e.g. bug176182- jsautorequest-sb_0_2.patch I'm not really sure what it's for or how it fits with the Debian xulrunner patch set. Judging from the report on bugzilla.mozilla.org it looks like this patch has been applied upstream (1.8.1?), and so probably will be in Debian's xulrunner shortly. Still, all of these patches need to be reviewed, and the songbird build process needs to be patched to use the system xulrunner, rather than it's own one. 3) Flash. Songbird uses the flashplugin for somethings. As I understand it there is a free version of flash available. Is it compatible enough though? What about the new version adobe are supposed to be working on? 4) Plugins. Songbird recommends to users that they install a couple of extra plugins on first run. We really should package these to I think. My plan is to start addressing #2 over the next week or so - I'll post some packages on people.debian.org probably once it's building. Hopefully it won't be too long before it's in a suitable shape for an upload to experimental or unstable. Alan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I reproduced the problem on a test system like this: I used your scripts (although only from one machine), and I'm not able to reproduce it with nfs-kernel-server from etch. The memory count goes up a bit, but then stabilizes. Should I repeat this with 1.0.12? Do you think 1.0.12 will get accepted in 4.0r1 (if it fixes the problem)? Your best guess at this point is probably Valgrind. Recompile the etch version with debug information (remove the dh_strip line in debian/rules), then run mountd with valgrind --leak-check=full rpc.mountd -F -d all. After it's started leaking, just Ctrl-C it and see what comes out. Package: ark Version: 4:3.5.6-3 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Ark is not working with package unrar-free, despite it is suggested by Ark. Ark tries to run unrar to unpack RAR archives, but unrar-free package contains only unrar-free binary. Please make ark usable with unrar-free package too. Or remove it from suggest field, but it would render ark useless for RAR archives unpacking for people using only free software. Bug#408116: Syntax error in sqspell.php
found 408116 0.80.1 thanks Hi, I'm very sorry, but due to other activities I didn't discover earlier that sqspell.php has a syntax error. It needs to separate the values of the array with a comma: ,. I've created attached patch that fixes the issue. It also removes the closing ?, which is not necessary any may cause problems if somehow inadvertently whitespace was added after it. thanks! Bug#420679: wrong screensize

This is highly annoying, since the external display has higher resolution than the internal. So when I undock again I'm left with a laptop that I cannot use in a sane manner because 25% or so of the desktop is outside of the physical screen. You can't reduce the virtual resolution with xrandr at that point? Probably; but it's still a nuisance, since there's no way to execute xrandr from gdm (for instance), so until I log in I cannot change the resolution. The only reasonable *default* IMHO is to use the lower resolution for both screens when using mirrored mode, since that's the only option that will made things look mirrored (or possible to use the resolution of the main screen). Having the configurable is fine by me (I guess some people might find it useful), but manually invoking xrandr isn't... Bug#423171: possible-missing-colon-in-closes should not check ancient entires
Package: lintian Version: 1.23.30 Hi, I got these warnings on checking squirrelmail: W: squirrelmail: possible-missing-colon-in-closes l436:Closes #143277 W: squirrelmail: possible-missing-colon-in-closes l438:Closes #136612 W: squirrelmail: possible-missing-colon-in-closes l530:Closes #125866 This concerns changelog entries from more than 4 years old. I don't think it's right for lintian to be expecting me to change those entries, especially because it brings no benefit since that changelog entry will not be processe by dak to create close-messages. I suggest to only check the topmost changelog entry, as some other tests already do aswell if I remember correctly. thanks!
