Bug#427917: please cand you package/add xgridfit ?
Kt, 2007 06 07 15:06 +0200, Gürkan Sengün rašė: Package: fontforge Version: 0.0.20070501-2 Severity: wishlist can you add xgridfit to it? http://xgridfit.sourceforge.net/ No, this one not fits to the FontForge package. But this bug would be retitled to ITP and reassigned to the new xgridfit package. The current state of the xgridfit archives on sourceforge.net are not very good for packaging, but we can ask the upstream to fix these problems and we can do the new package for Debian. Bug#427860: marked as done (adduser: please add debconf question about UID ranges)
Stephen Gran wrote: The major problem with changes like this is that adding something to adduser means adding something to debian-installer. I know they are unhappy about adding new debconf questions, even low priority, during the install. Since there are better ways to do this (you can ship hooks in a custom d-i image, I believe), I am inclined not to do this. Take care, Thats fair enough, I wasn't aware of the impact on d-i, I thought d-i would invoke the adduser package. I'll look into the custom hooks. Well, that debconf question could also have been for internal use only, making it preseedable. That wouldn't interfere with d-i in such case and would even not need more translation. Geoff, please also note that the *first* created user UID *is* preseedable by using passwd/user-uid. That may help you in solving some issues with automated installs maybe. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#427986: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#427986: samba: not permitted access to share IPC$
Quoting Gordon Haverland ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: samba Version: 3.0.25a-1 Severity: normal It has been ages since I did anything with samba, so mostly a newbie. I was trying to set things up for user security, however that might be attained, and testing things from a Windows-XP box (XP Home I believe). I had attempted to write a complete smb.conf from the beginning, instead of making incremental changes to something minimal. And almost everything I tried resulted in this IPC$ problem. I then tried building something in small steps from almost nothing. When I added a valid users = ... line, I started getting the IPC$ message again (and logons/browsing failing). Usernames in lowercase, in uppercase, or repetitions of a lowercase and an uppercase name were all tried. They all cause the same problem. In searching for answers, I ran across lots of bug reports where this seems to be a symptom, but hadn't run across solutions. So, there are probably a few different things which create this IPC$ symptom. I can work with the setup I eventually created, so I don't need a resolution to this. I was adding this to the [globals] section, which in afterthought was probably a mistake. If so, perhaps this is something that testparm can look for? I tried sending this once before, and then realised exim4 wasn't properly configured. Hopefully this other copy won't resurface. Well, part from the above explanations, could you post your smb.conf, explain exactly what problem is happening and eventually post level 3 logs (at first attempt). Up to now, we're mostly in the dark to understand what your problem might be. I seem to understand you're using valid users in the [globals] section. If you do so, don't be surprised to get unexpected results. valid users is a share parameters as explained in the smb.conf manpage (funnily, it seems to work slightly but that may be mor ea kind of side effect than anything really intended). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I won't need to keep an eye on it on the debconf page anymore, since the D-I stats are emailed to me. Yeah, any of the .po files from d-i are the debconf templates. So do you know any reason we would want to use one version over the other, or should I have a look at them both and take whichever is based on the more current source? Pick either one: I think they're pretty much the same. I grabbed one from the D-I pages on Alioth, and the other from the debconf page. :) I've compared the files that you sent, and although the source strings match, which means each of the translations is complete, the translations in each file are different. Bug#394770: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#394770: Anyone with an idea to avoid smbd to keep rotated logfiles opened after the log rotation happened?
On Sun, May 27, 2007 at 04:21:21PM +0200, Christian Perrier wrote: tags 394770 confirmed found 394770 3.0.25a-1 thanks This bug about smbd processes keeping logfiles opened after the log rotation happened is still here. Indeed, this is because we just reload samba (invoke-rc.d samba reload) and, therefore, the smbd processes keep the log files opened. As *restarting* samba is not an option (server admins will hate us, and their users will hate them), does anyone have an idea here? Should we report to upstream that smbd should close the opened log files when it is sent SIGHUP? That sounds like a suitable solution. I'm surprised this isn't already done, though; maybe the problem is that not all of the smbd processes get signalled when the parent received a SIGHUP? -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#428009: Scribes icon doesn't work
Hi Scott Scott Severance wrote: Package: scribes Version: 0.3.2.6-1 Severity: minor The scribes package's /usr/share/applications/scribes.desktop has Icon=scribes. On my system (Ubuntu Feisty), that description results in a broken icon. The system can only find an icon when displaying icons at the size of Nautilus' 100% icon size. At any other size (including menus and panels), the icon doesn't work. I think that's because the icon cache isn't updated. Does running sudo gtk-update-icon-cache solves the issue? If so, I'll add a call to dh_iconcache to the Ubuntu package (I can't to Debian, but it shouldn't be a problem). To solve this bug, I edited data/scribes.desktop.in and set the icon path to /usr/share/pixmaps/scribes.png. I don't know if this is the proper solution, but it works. I've got a fixed package in my repository: http://severance.homelinux.org:8066/falcon/ That's not a fix, it's a workaround. The icon you have to use is the one in /usr/share/icons. As I think about it, I suppose it's possible that this issue could be due to a difference between Debian and Ubuntu. I built the Debian package from source and am using it on Ubuntu. Ubuntu has the same package as Debian. It's automatically synced, since there hasn't been any change yet. Have a nice Day Emilio Scott Severance signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#418990: gweather applet does not work anymore
Hi, I ran the same problem (libgnomevfs2-extra was not installed, so gweather-applet stopped working). I don't have g-d-e installed (evolution + epiphany + totem etc are really a lot of space if I don't use them), so I didn't get the dep for libgnomevfs2-extra. If libgnomevfs2-extra isn't installed, the weather applet can be added to a panel, configured, and seems to run. When the VFS http call fails, it sits in 'Updating' and eventually fails. It's really hard to tell that this is a packaging/package installation issue. Although libgnomevfs2-extra in the recommends for gnome-applets (at 2.18.0-3) it's really hard to tell that this is actually a dependancy for gweather-applet. Looking quickly at the gnome-applets bug list, many of the gweather bugs listed are just the lack of this package being installed. libgnomevfs2-extra is 540k installed, with the http module being 110k of this. Could libgnomevfs2-extra be added as a dependency to gnome-applets, or libgnomevfs2-extra be rolled back into libgnomevfs2-0? If this is a bad idea, or not possible, could there at least be a README.Debian for gnome-applets pointing out the requirement for libgnomevfs2-extra to be installed for gweather-applet to work? This was the first thing I looked for to see if there was a known fix, and I'm guessing that it would cut down on related bug reports. At the moment, there is no way AFAICT to find out what's going on without searching the Debian bug database (which most people probably aren't going to get to). Bug#428030: fvwm: cursor disappears when secondlife client is running
Subject: fvwm: cursor disappears when secondlife client is running Package: fvwm Version: 1:2.5.18-3 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** Hello, when I run the secondlife client, now SecondLife_i686_1_16_0_6 just downloaded from secondlife.com, within fvwm (stable version), the cursor blinks and almost disappears when focusing outside the SL client window. The cursor disappears e.g. on xterm's, on the fvwm menus and on the background. The ghost cursor is still working propertly: one can select text in xterm and click on fvwm buttons all right, but working without actually seeing the mouse becomes pretty annoying... More info: 1- the problem occurs regardless of the way (keyboard/mouse/Alt-Tab) employed to move the focus away from the SL client; 2- the problem occurs equally for other windows in the same and in other virtual desktop screens; 3- my .fvwm2rc policy is: ColormapFocus FollowsMouse 4- also, the keyboard reacts rather slowly under these ghost-mouse conditions; 5- the problem ceases upon exiting from the SL client, and re-occurs when that one is started again; 6- no such problems occurs under gnome. I understand that the SL client may not be fully compliant with some X11/unix standard, but I believe no WM should be tricked by specific running programs into sabotaging other running programs, so maybe this should be classified as important. The current state of the xgridfit archives on sourceforge.net are not very good for packaging, but we can ask the upstream to fix these problems and we can do the new package for Debian. What does Debian fonts packaging team think about xgridfit? Would this package be useful for Debian? Yes, packaging xgridfit would be useful. It is already required to generate Junicode with all the features. Currently the ttf-junicode package lacks hinting. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ttf-junicode/+bug/117214 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=428034 Other fonts like Old Standard also use xgridfit for hinting. It is a great way to hint a font, it makes things a lot easier to work, read, and modify. From what I understand a path in one of the scripts would need to be changed. What is wrong with the upstream package regarding packaging? Cheers, Denis Moyogo Jacquerye

Ok, so how about some further clues as to what kind of debugging information you might be looking for? I am not in the habit of hacking in the udev/kernel area, so everything should be in pretty much of a vanilla Debian testing state. Failing that, if you are *sure* it is not a udev problem, how about some suggestions for what other package to assign this bug to? Is it a kernel issue? Bug#426694: GStreamer GnomeVFS plugin fails to recognize extra protocols
On Fri, Jun 08, 2007, Josselin Mouette wrote: A whole hook system in gnome-vfs2 and all packages providing modules, just to workaround a broken design in GStreamer ? The broken design is in GnomeVFS too. The Gtk and Pango module systems provide registries of the modules, while GnomeVFS does not. Fixing GStreamer in a clean fashion will only be possible if GnomeVFS provides such a registry; otherwise, starting GStreamer apps checking all GnomeVFS modules will be slow because of the time to load all the *.so files and to dlopen() them with all their shlibs. Plus, as I said, this would/could completely disappear from GnomeVFS packages when dpkg triggers will be available. I would take care of the transition since you seem to see it as a huge burden. Wouldn't we have triggers in sight and wouldn't GnomeVFS be deprecated on the long term, I would even propose to take the occasion to have a new dh_gnomevfsmodules system which would permit encoding the binary module version in a virtual dep just like for Pango and Gtk; but the ABI isn't likely to change as GnomeVFS will be phased out. -- Loïc Minier

Bug#427917: please cand you package/add xgridfit ?
Yes, packaging xgridfit would be useful. It is already required to generate Junicode with all the features. Currently the ttf-junicode package lacks hinting. I know, because there's no xgridfit... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ttf-junicode/+bug/117214 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=428034 Other fonts like Old Standard also use xgridfit for hinting. And where do they take xgridfit from? From what I understand a path in one of the scripts would need to be changed. What is wrong with the upstream package regarding packaging? Bug#428021: Should not depend on mediawikis
Hi ! Le Friday 08 June 2007 06:17:58 Jack Bates, vous avez écrit : I manually installed MediaWiki on my web server and want to install texvc to enable math support, however I don't want to install the Debian mediawiki package. Unfortunately the Debian mediawiki-math package depends on mediawiki. I don't think it is not a good idea. texvc has no use without mediawiki and is intented only for using along with mediawiki. I think there are two ways for you: * either compile texvc for your own from your own mediawiki (not that difficult, it is only a 'make' in the math/derectory as far as i remember) * Either install the debian package for mediawiki As a side question, I'd like to know why you didn't install debian's package directly ? If you beleive there is anything that makes it unusable for you, then you better send bug reports about that... Romain

Bug#426694: GStreamer GnomeVFS plugin fails to recognize extra protocols
Le vendredi 08 juin 2007 à 10:26 +0200, Loïc Minier a écrit : The broken design is in GnomeVFS too. Whoa? The gnome-vfs registry is far from being as clean as that of gtk and pango, but you can't say it doesn't exist. If you want the list of supported methods, you just have to read the /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/*.conf files. There is absolutely no need to dlopen the modules, you only have to check the module is present (because the .conf files are in /etc - not a good idea - they can be still here while the module is removed). Plus, as I said, this would/could completely disappear from GnomeVFS packages when dpkg triggers will be available. I would take care of the transition since you seem to see it as a huge burden. Not so huge, but completely unnecessary, and made for implementing a broken solution (as touching libgstgnomevfs.so) in the end. -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Bug#423006: Workaround OK
Hi. FYI, the proposed workaround in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=420754#5 helps solve the issue. I've patched /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions, then issued : mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-4-xen-686 2.6.18-4-xen-686 After that : the lib/ in the initrd image contains the libcrypt.so.1 lib ... As to know why sh needs libcrypt.so... it seems weird to me but that's just a naive opinion. These bugs should probably be merged... but I hope someone more qualified will have a better judgement. Bug#422141: SRM: ViewCVS update for etch?
Hi, At 1181240179 time_t, Mark Brown wrote: As documented in #422141 (originally #372655) the etch version of viewcvs is unable to display files in a CVS repository which have been updated using the etch version of CVS. Since this seems like a major enough problem to warrant an update to etch but you appear to be rather busy at the minute I was wondering if it would be helpful if I were to prepare a NMU for etch? There is a simple patch in #372655 which would be my first port of call. CCing debian-release since I figure this is worth an update no matter if I do an NMU or not so we may as well ask for permission now. As I understand it, it makes it unusable with cvs repo created and used with etch? In that case, I think that makes an NMU worth it. Cheers, -- Julien Danjou .''`. Bug#428044: tex4ht: texmf.cnf snippet needs lower number
Package: tex4ht Version: 20060913-1 Severity: important Hi, in texmf.cnf, earlier entries overwrite later ones. /etc/texmf/texmf.d/90tex4ht.cnf tries to change the setting of TEX4HTINPUTS, but fails to do so because tex-common defines it in 85Misc.cnf. Bug#428020: More info. Not just open dialog.
tags retitle 428020 Geany's Dialog boxes show up on wrong workspace thanks I've been looking into this some more. It seems that the problem is not as simple as I thought. Also, my steps to reproduce are incomplete. It looks like the reason that the open dialog was different is because I already opened it. I was using geany in workspace 1, and opened some files. I then moved it to workspace 2, and when I opened the open dialog again, it was stuck in the past, and opened in workspace 1. The preferences dialog worked fine because I hadn't opened it yet. However, after I open the preferences dialog in workspace 2, and then move geany back to workspace 1, the preferences dialog will always open in workspace 2. Same behavior for Save As. For some reason, I can't get the Set Include and Arguments window to exibit this odd behavior. It always works right, opening its window in the current workspace, regardless of how many times I open it, or where. -Brandon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#418990: gweather applet does not work anymore

Ack; on the other hand, Recommends will be enforced more strictly soonish. libgnomevfs2-extra is 540k installed, with the http module being 110k of this. Could libgnomevfs2-extra be added as a dependency to gnome-applets, or libgnomevfs2-extra be rolled back into libgnomevfs2-0? I proposed moving the http module to libgnomevfs2-0 too; but one drawback is that it would pull the krb5 stack in the deps. -- Loïc Minier

Bug#427559: problems with your proposal of suid root backend runner
Hi Jerome, Jerome Alet [2007-06-07 21:42 +0200]: Martin, you suggest a suid root backend to launch other CUPS backends as root. Only as a temporary workaround. This is not really possible as far as I know, for several reasons : It does work, since cups itself uses it for lpd. the easiest way was certainely to chown root.root mybackend chmod 700 mybackend (NB that 700 is not a Debian Policy compliant permission either, so we have to slightly change that for the backends we ship by default in the package. But that's not a problem as long as 700 works, too). as specified in CUPS' documentation. don't forget that many CUPS backends are written in scripting languages, and won't support being suid root. Right. As I pointed out in an earlier comment, the right thing to do (IMHO) is to change the derooting to make backend invocation compatible to upstream again. I'll look into that at some point. For now I'm just going to disable the derooting until we have a good solution for this. Nothing. Just read the man page. RETURN VALUE times() returns the number of clock ticks that have elapsed since an arbitrary point in the past. For Linux 2.4 and earlier this point is the moment the system was booted. Since Linux 2.6, this point is (2^32/HZ) - 300 (i.e., about 429 million) seconds before system boot time. The return value may overflow the possible range of type clock_t. On error, (clock_t) -1 is returned, and errno is set appropriately. this is clear, robust simple. with libc 2.3 it failed for some reason. Now it does *NOT* fails, gives you your _wrapped_ (see manpage) uptime, and user time of the calling process, that is 0 (and that's not a surprise as your example didn't run long enough). If you want ot test for error, you should test res against (clock_t)-1. negatives values are not an error and for any value != (clock_t)-1, the tms struct values can be trusted. full stop, just quoting the documentation. And if that breaks your oracle database or whatever, then the application is making false assertions about what times(3) does. -- ·O· Pierre Habouzit ··O[EMAIL PROTECTED] OOOhttp://www.madism.org pgpFDDuvObokQ.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#428056: Doesn't correctly display text/plain; format=flowed mails
Package: debbugs Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- First, to see what I mean just look at this bugreport via webinterface and notice how the lines in the Package information-table below starting with 1(!) whitespace followed by OR appear to have 2 whitespaces. Compare this with the output of your mailclient which should just show 1 whitespace. The problem is the MimeType format=flowed http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3676 4.1. Interpreting Format=Flowed If the first character of a line is a space, the line has been space-stuffed (see Section 4.4). Logically, this leading space is deleted before examining the line further (that is, before checking for flowed). If a mail is encoded with format=flowed a line starting with a single whitespace is encoded with 2 whitespaces. A reasonable mailclient will strip one whitespace again when a user reads the mail. Unfortunately debbugs does not. So mails written with reportbug-ng and icedove (which uses format=flowed by default in plaintext mails) suffer from this cosmetical issue. Bug#427990: glibc: PIE executables core dumps on hppa
Hi! Sébastien Bernard a écrit : Package: glibc Severity: important Tags: patch start.S file is messing up the paramaters when using the -pie option. This causes instant segfault on hppa when trying to run an pie executable. This causes portmap and nscd to break on this arch and maybe many other executables. Here is a patch that fix the start problem, but all pie programs must be relinked to fix the segfault. I have seen this patch on the mailing list and I have tried it, but unfortunately the glibc is currently not buildable (even without this patch), due to a unidentified toolchain breakage. Guillem Jover [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: reassign 423944 libshishi0 thanks On Mon, 2007-05-14 at 19:08:22 -0700, Josh Triplett wrote: Package: inetutils-telnet Version: 2:1.5.dfsg.1-4 Severity: normal File: /usr/bin/inetutils-telnet When using telnet for any connection, including those not involving Kerberos in any way, telnet complains that ~/.shishi/tickets does not exist, and creates ~/.shishi . The dot directory is created from inside libshishi, in lib/init.c (maybe_install_usercfg), I don't think it should be created from there. For the warning, that's useful information so that users can diagnose why shishi is not working if there's missing files, but probably would make sense to disable the output if not asked for, like in verbose mode or similar. There may be multiple problems, that can have different solutions, here. For example: * It seems that 'telnet' might not need to initialize Shishi at all, unless it will use a Kerberos connection. * The complaint is printed. * The directory is created. I will look into if it is simple to make inetutils defer the call to shishi_init until Kerberos is definitely needed. Thoughts on the other problems appreciated. Maybe the directory should simply be created, with no warning? /Simon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: dpkg Version: 1.13.25 Severity: grave Hello, during a class explaining to the participants how important the consistent state of a system is, dpkg happily installed a broken Debian package, which was corrupted during transmission from a mirror. The latter seems to kind of delay them, so part of actual assembler code is now before the first emitted split marker, which then is erroneously taken as prologue material and copied into every split assembler source resulting in lots of duplicate definitions. As a temporary workaround, a build with --with-gcc=gcc-4.1 succeeds. Bug#426694: GStreamer GnomeVFS plugin fails to recognize extra protocols
On Thu, Jun 07, 2007, Loïc Minier wrote: I've added a simple hook system to gnome-vfs2 in SVN which doesn't look like too much of a kludge and should be trivial to convert to dpkg triggers when they land. gnome-vfs2 can't be uploaded right now, but people are welcome to look at the system before this happens and let me know what could be improved. After a debate with the other GStreamer Maintainers and considering notably that: - other types of plugins are affected (libvisual, LADPSA, Python) - upstream is currently implementing a clean solution it was decided to revert the GnomeVFS hook system as it is overengineered for the interim. The upstream bug on the subject is at: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350477 -- Loïc Minier
Bug#420611: Interesting....
With 'Option Composite Enable' the composite extension is now enabled. I guess something must have changed between versions dfsg-2 and dfsg-6. I'll see if it still works without the line there at all and have a general play with it over the weekend.
