Bug#495623: compiz slow performance on intel 915
public_debian wrote: Package: compiz Version: 0.7.6-5 Severity: important the performance of compiz fusion on debian lenny with an intel 915 graphics card is bad... especially when scrolling. This may be due to the card not managing memory properly (geedy behaviour). This bug is not found or isn't as serious on ubuntu hardy... You should send your X config and log. This is probably related to EXA, and I think Ubuntu changed the default EXA migration, it might explain why the behavior is slightly different. Bug#495157:
On Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:08:42PM +0200, Tomasz Ka%u017Amierczak wrote: It seems that you were right - I have at least two libgadu.pc files, one in /usr/local/lib/... and the other in /usr/lib/... I think it can be caused by improper uninstall of some of the previous versions of kadu, that I've installed from sources and that contained libgadu. Sounds likely. So this bug report seems to be invalid. Closing. Should I do anything beyond removing the old libgadu? In order to fix my system? I think that removing all traces of libgadu from under /usr/local should be enough. If that version was very diffent from the one provided in a deb, and if you have other local programs that are linked against it, you also might need to recompile them. regards, -- Marcin Owsiany [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://marcin.owsiany.pl/ GnuPG: 1024D/60F41216 FE67 DA2D 0ACA FC5E 3F75 D6F6 3A0D 8AA0 60F4 1216 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#462835: Debian bug #462835 grub-pc: alloc magic is broken
Am Montag, den 18.08.2008, 23:06 -0400 schrieb Bharath Ramesh: Sorry for a late reply. No problem. I do not get the alloc magic is broken error any more with grub2 and lvm.mod. Grub2 never works if I have lvm.mod included. What do you mean with that? What is GRUB telling you? Does it go to rescue mode without showing any error message or do does it hang? Please try the freshly new uploaded 1.96+20080724-8 version. There was a bug in the LVM module that the error variable was given back to the upper layer so it goes to rescue mode even if it shouldn't in that case. I ran grub-emu with my grub.cfg which I have attached with this email. I get the following error when I use the grub.cfg in grub-emu error: invalid arch independent ELF magic I have attached grub.cfg along with this email. grub.cfg_broken gives the above error while grub.cfg_working is the only working config file to make my laptop boot. This is normal grub-emu doestn't support modules at all but lvm.mod is compiled in, so you don't need to load it to use your lvm devices with e.g. `ls' command. Once again I am sorry for this late reply. Once again no problem :) A `late' reply like yours is better then getting none at all for months. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#495373: Poor support for the xmonad WM; blank windows with the cairo backend
On 19/08/2008, Yavor Doganov [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Michal, Here is what the upstream GNUstep Back maintainer replied: , | The log file looks like xmonad does not reparent windows, that way | GNUstep fails to compute any window border size and guesses them | (wrongly of course). That is about the only thing I could think of doing in | relation to this bug report. You state yourself that the original | problem is not reproducable for you. ` Do you have any clues about that? I took a quick look at the source code, but it's all Haskell... Just set the offsets to 0 when the windows are not reparented, and if somebody complains they can get the them calculated properly. With typical configuration you would be at most one pixel off even if the value was actually useful for something. It appears that the grey windows you get with cairo are unrelated to this problem. Can you try a GNUstep app with the cairo backend under a different WM (such as wmaker or anything else that is convenient for you to install)? Thanks. I do have wmaker installed because I use wmsetbg. The problem is the same with AClock running under wmaker except it does not complain about offsets. Bug#495630: libfaketime or just faketime?
The libfaketime LD_PRELOAD hack would be really useful to me for writing a test suite for some time-sensitive code. However, packaging it as a library seems a little bit weird. I'm tempted to package it instead as a simple binary package called faketime, by analogy with fakeroot and fakechroot. I'd write (and provide upstream, if they want it) a simple /usr/bin/faketime wrapper script and man page if i went this route. Any thoughts on the right thing to do? It seems a little silly to worry about the nuances of library packaging when this is clearly not used as a typical library would be used. (e.g. calling ldconfig in post{inst,rm} makes no sense). OTOH, upstream does explicitly call the package libfaketime. I welcome suggestions. --dkg pgpmVmX9SmGzb.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#495628: general: setting system users' homes in their data directory slower security scanning
Quoting alex bodnaru ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: general Severity: normal putting the home directory of users like postgres or especially backuppc in their data directory makes routine scans of tiger over the homes directory for user related suspect files work significantly slower. there is no reason to scan those directories, since they contain structured data only, but only accidental logins of those users may bring bad thing here, and this should be the second reason not to set their homedirs here. Why don't you discuss this with the respective maintainers of these packages? I doubt that an overall policy about this is, at this very moment, something that can really happen and I highly suspect that this bug report just gets ignored by many (not judging its validity, which I have no competent advice about). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#495614: desktop-base: No orbit-moreblue theme for gdm
I'm not sure if this bug has to be addressed within gdm, so please feel free to reassign. It just seems as if desktop-base provides the themes for kdm, so imho it would be logical if it did the same for gdm. gdm currently ships debian-moreblue, but I wonder if we should ship MoreBlue Orbit in desktop-base (and slim, and xdm etc.) IMHO, desktop-base should ship default artwork for customized component, gdm included. cheers, Fathi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#486507: #486507: Confirm this bug and workaround
Hello, I can confirme this strange bug too. Vmware works fine on my lenny workstation but fails on my notebook (both are up-to-date lenny). This workaround fixed the problem for me: 1. Bug#495618: desktop-base: Please provide artwork for splashy and/or usplash

I'm not really sure how is splash screen integrated in Debian (I mean, default install doesn't install some splash screen, and it seems to not work on some installs). I wonder if it's worth adding themes to desktop-base for them (but they sure can integrate them) Thoughts? some days ago, on a thread of debian-desktop ml: At the moment, desktop-base doesn't interact with usplash/splashy only (we don't have an official bootsplash used in Debian, I have hope for Lenny+1). I agree, it could be nice to provide usplash/splashy themes but current packages (desktop-base, usplash, splashy) doesn't allow this customization. For splashy, it's trivial as it uses background wallpaper and a configuration files only but for usplash, we need to add theme library build to desktop-base. Indeed usplash and splashy must handle desktop-base provided theme. I guess mostly for Lenny+1. We could add bootsplash related artwork now. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I did read the messages of Alessandro but they needed more consideration. - The RFA called for adoption of the package in conjuction with egroupware, which AFAICT, neither of you considered. - There is currently a release freeze, which means that no new packages, least of all completely new upstream versions, should be uploaded. - I saw in the changelog Added php4 dependencies. Bug#495541: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: Please reactivate CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS_POWER
(the bug was already reported to powertop) Quoting maximilian attems ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Being the source of the change, the consequences should have been tracked by the kernel team and the change made at the moment all userspace utilities have been updated. Which is what I call a transition. no the kernel is not a lib if an app doesn't work with default kernel it is plain buggy. I think this is mostly rethorical. Changing settings in the kernel is pretty much similar to changing the version of a library. So, it should be handled mostly the same way, IMHO: identify the affected packages, talk about it in -devel, organise a transition with the affected maintainers, track this down in the BTS and do the change when everything is ready. That undoubtfully consumes resources and I know these are scarce. In such case, the only solution left is to minimize such invasive changes. I sincerely hope that this story will lead the kernel team to consider such approach for upcoming similar changes you guys might want to do. deprecated ACPI_PROCFS_POWER will be set for lenny as it is show now that too much userspace is still too buggy to interpret the sys files. Thanks you very much for that decision. I think this is the wise choice, indeed, and I appreciate that the kernel team is taking this seriously. Really, it's much appreciated. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#495555: copyright-file and README.Debian are practically useless
Juhapekka Tolvanen wrote (2008-08-18 16:52 +0300): This is weird: Normally /usr/share/doc/packagename/copyright tells, where pristine source-code was downloaded from, but in this package it is not said. unicode is a native Debian package which means that Debian is the upstream and uploads to Debian archive can be considered as releases. The relevant section in the policy manual: 12.5 Copyright information [...] In addition, the copyright file must say where the upstream sources (if any) were obtained. It should name the original authors of the package and the Debian maintainer(s) who were involved with its creation. I think this belongs to the category if any. Bug#495359: perl is in an unusable state during etch-lenny dist-upgrade and breaks the upgrade process
On Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:14:24PM +0300, Niko Tyni wrote: Even if this is deemed to be a policy violation by the gs-common package, I suspect it's not the only one, and finding them all is non-trivial. In light of the above, I think it is a policy violation and I don't really think we have much choice here. For the gs-common / defoma case, the way out would seem to be something like: - go through the packages depending on defoma in Etch, find broken prerm scripts and make sure they have equivalents in Lenny that survive 'failed-upgrade'. It may be possible to do most of this by changing /usr/bin/dh_installdefoma behaviour and binNMUing the packages, not sure about that. Hm, this doesn't seem too bad. The gs-common package is somewhat a special case because it has a prerm in Etch but not in Lenny. Most prerm scripts treat 'failed-upgrade' as a no-op so that installation continues normally. - remove all defoma-app invocations from the 'prerm upgrade' code paths in lenny so we don't hit this again in the future ... or guard them with '|| true', I suppose. - (optionally) fix /usr/sbin/defoma-app in lenny to fail gracefully when its dependencies are unconfigured, particularly when File::Copy can't be found, to avoid the 'failed-upgrade' path if defoma happens to get upgraded first As for others, I suppose we'll have to fix them as they show up. It looks like libxml-libxml-perl.prerm is one. As above, the Lenny libxml-libxml-perl.prerm survives 'failed-upgrade', so this is a false positive. A systematical way of finding them could be to unpack new perl and perl-modules on Etch and then doing partial upgrades for all the Etch packages one by one somehow. That would take quite a while, I suppose. Scripting this is pretty easy however, just running something like etch# apt-get install $package etch# perl -pi -e s/etch/lenny/ /etc/apt/sources.list etch# apt-get update etch# dget perl perl-base $package etch# dpkg --unpack perl*.deb ${package}*.deb should do. The 'apt-get update' can be optimized away with separate etch and lenny chroots. -- Niko Tyni [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I am sending them to you in the hope of making mod_musicindex even better. I broke the changes up into three different patches, which address three different issues: * mod_musicindex overwrites cookies that it did not create * streaming playlists to IE7 does not work * form buttons do not work with IE7 Awesome, thanks a lot for this extremely valuable feedback. I don't use IE (I don't even have it on any of my machines) so feedback + detailed description of the issue + patch is really very cool! I'm currently on vacation so I'll look into this in depth sometimes soon, but from what I've seen so far, Patch 1 is a no-brainer and is accepted, Patch 2 is also good to go as far as I could tell, and regarding Patch 3, I'll see if I can make this a bit cleaner (I'm thinking about modifying the form itself rather than the interpreting code) I'm CC'ing a Debian bug as Patch 2 and 3 directly concern it (and probably fixes it as well), Many thanks for your input! The full bug report hisory is here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=494995 and the .config from the submitter here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=25;filename=config.i386.gz;att=1;bug=494995 In short statically linking the uml kernel fails with the error below. Any idea what may be wrong? Accordingly, this will not be a major priority for me unless you can give me a more specific usage case. The problem is not the cost, but the fact is that one cannot change the disk and/or reinstall may be risky (e.g. old laptops which is my case for the moment, but also handhelds, where disk space is always limited). Also, this is only 26 MB for gnucash, but other packages had/have the same problem, so that it could end up in hundreds of MBs. -- Vincent Lefèvre [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Web: http://www.vinc17.org/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: http://www.vinc17.org/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / Arenaire project (LIP, ENS-Lyon) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#495653: samba: libc free() crash in smbd
Package: samba Version: 2:3.2.0-4 Severity: important Since update to 3.2.0, smbd crashes with segfault whenever a user (from WindowsXP) needs to authenticate. Bug#495656: apache2-mpm-worker: ThreadLimit directive goes unnoticed
Package: apache2-mpm-worker Version: 2.2.3-4+etch4 Severity: important Hi, Using the ThreadLimit directive when configuring apache2 to use the mpm_worker_module, the startup messages show that this directive is ignored. Apache always maintains the value 64. there is a #define DEFAULT_THREAD_LIMIT 64 setting in file ./server/mpm/worker/worker.c: of the apache2 source package. Well, I don't know who's fault it is, update-manager or dpkg-reconfigure, but programs that don't have focus really shouldn't grab focus from other programs. Bug#495355: libgtk2.0-0: libgnomepreakpad.so missing for gtk apps
reassign 495355 gnome-session thanks Le dimanche 17 août 2008 à 11:09 -0400, Jerry Quinn a écrit : It appears that bug-buddy got removed because the upgrade from gnome-core 2.14.3.6 to 2.22.2 no longer depends on it. I can install by hand, but it seems like that dependency should still be enforced if it's something expected by apps. Well, it’s gnome-session that should not set the environment if bug-buddy is not installed. Cheers, -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Bug#495040: how about requesting removal of libflash
Hi Iwamatu-san, I was doing summary of browser plugins and encountered this package and this RC bug report. Technically, this RC bug report may not be correct to say serious. It is just important. Just because some sites crash browser does not mean this is RC. (I did not check but this may require recompile to fix this.) But this package in this version is not so useful since youtube marks this as too old to be used and refuse to serve video. This package deserve to be removed since it is not maintained. The latest version is GPLFlash v0.5.4 on 31-01-2007 while your package is 0.4.13-9 on 6 May 2006. There are 2 good FREE flash players swfdec and gnash these days. (Both are current and do decent job working with youtube. (Both do not work as google street view.) In light of these facts, the best thing to do is remove this package per maintainer request or leaving this bug report as serious by not changing severity. Just my thought...
