Bug#662780: cups: new version causes printer to hang for ages, then only print a blank page

2012-07-15 Thread Julian Gilbey
I have tried using the latest testing versions: cups 1.5.3-1,
cups-filters 1.0.18-2+b2, and everything relating to the original
report is now working.

I am happy to close this bug report; if there is anything else that is
not fixed but not directly connected to the original report, perhaps
this should be filed as a separate bug report?

Fine with me. There was nothing printed in a while so I cannot say for
sure. But if it is solved for Julian, that sounds reasonable. And if it
is not fixed, bug reports can be reopened or separate bug reports can be
submitted.

Thanks,

Paul

at the system usage (`htop`, `ps aux | grep gs`), the Ghostscript
process used 100 % of the CPU.

Were you printing to PDF using 'Print to file' or cups-pdf?

The first one »Print to file«. Probably that does not use CUPS at all,
does it? I will try with CUPS-pdf and report back.

Indeed, 'Print to file' doesn't use CUPS. However, it is preferred over
cups-pdf as it does directly produce a PDF file. I'd not recommend
using cups-pdf because it is not designed to process PDF input, which
is what your application will send to CUPS if you are using the GTK
print dialogue.

Brian.

I'm still waiting for cups-filter 1.0.16 to enter testing before I try
it out.

I still see it with cups 1.5.2-8 and cups-filters 1.0.5-1, upgrading now
to check with current version...
and cups 1.5.2-11 / cups-filters 1.0.18-1 exhibit the blank-page printing
at least (I don't have a PDF that I know for sure to trigger the ghostscript
takes forever part of the bug handy right now, but feel free to mail me
the one that caused the problem for you and I can try it here too.)

I suspect, reading the Ubuntu bug reports, that some fixes were applied
specifically for Kyocera (and Brother, respectively) printers, and since
mine is a Lexmark those fixes don't trigger for me. I haven't looked at
the code though.

/Anders

There is a discussion related to this problem here:

LP #950713 may not be exactly the same bug but may be worth a read.

Bug#662780: cups: new version causes printer to hang for ages, then only print a blank page

2012-03-06 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: cups
Version: 1.5.2-5
Severity: important

I am printing to a Kyocera printer via a socket://x.x.x.x URL, using
the ppd appended at the end of this email. Version 1.5.0-13 of the
cups family printed to it fine, but having just upgraded to version
1.5.2-5 in testing, all that happens is the printer sits for ages (in
excess of 5 minutes), then emits a single blank page. And that was
just trying to print a test page - the same for anything else.

I don't have time to dig much further this week, but please let me
know if there are tests you would like me to perform to isolate this
problem.
