Bug#490123: dnsmasq: appears to be vulnerable to cache poisoning attack CVE-2008-1447
Package: dnsmasq Version: 2.42-4 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole dnsmasq appears to be vulnerable to CVE-2008-1447, the DNS cache poisoning exploit. From my reading of the source code and observation with tcpdump, dnsmasq doesn't do any source port randomisation. dnsmasq binds a UDP socket for each of the forwarding name servers when they are added (on startup, or configuration change), then uses those sockets forever. The source port doesn't change between queries. tcpdump confirms this. thanks Hamish -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages dnsmasq depends on: ii adduser 3.108 add and remove users and groups ii dnsmasq-base 2.42-4 A small caching DNS proxy and DHCP ii netbase 4.32 Basic TCP/IP networking system dnsmasq recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#409510: xpdf-utils: difference from poppler-utils?
On Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:22:34PM -0700, Matt Taggart wrote: I am working on packaging some software that uses pdftotext and didn't realize until today that there were two, one in xpdf-utils (which I was used to using) and one in poppler-utils (that was new to me). I was concerned that they might have different sets of flags so I started poking around to see if I could figure out what the difference was, but couldn't find much. Nothing listed in their descriptions or /usr/share/doc/* stuff. The only hint I found was that xpdf-utils conflicts/replaces/provides poppler-utils, but after reading this bug it appears maybe I shouldn't read too much into that? Could you write a paragraph or two explaining how the two projects relate and if I can expect them to be reasonable replacements for each other and include it in the README.Debian, or put something in the package description, or something? Ideally this would be in both packages, but at least in xpdf* since it does the c/r/p. I understand the description might be politics, but at least we could have some history of their origin/forking/etc so people could decide which to use on their own. OK, I'll add something in the next release. Indeed the answer is politics. libpoppler is a fork of the PDF handling code from Xpdf, used in evince etc. The project also provides poppler-utils as clones of the original tools found in xpdf-utils. Bug#489247: gpredict: Incorrect KDE menu entry showing up in Lost and Found [nb]
On Fri, Jul 04, 2008 at 02:00:21PM +0200, Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: When testing the Debian Edu desktop in Lenny using Norwegian Bokmål as the language setting , I noticed a 'Lost and found' (Tapt og funnet) menu entry in the KDE K menu. This menu section is used for applications with broken .desktop files. The gpredict package was one of the three packages with an entry there. The entry read 'GNOME Predict'. I'm not sure what is required to solve this, but believe the KDE menu entry should be moved to a more appropriate location. Thanks Petter. gpredict just uses a menu category of HamRadio, which is one of the xdg desktop specification's secondary categories. It doesn't list any of the primary categories because I don't think any of them are appropriate, but this isn't really policy compliant. There's a package called extra-xdg-menus which provides a suitable menu for HamRadio and also Electronics applications. gpredict might Suggest that package, as a solution to this bug. Bug#415239: gpf from powernow-k8: hardware fault
This problem turned out to be a hardware fault/BIOS bug anyway. The Athlon 64 x2 939 devices can't support 4 DIMMs at 400MHz, only up to 2 (or 3). 4 devices needs to be slowed down to 333MHz. I expect this is due to excessive capacitance inside the chip. The BIOS is supposed to be aware of these and slow down the memory if it detects 4 DIMMs, but my Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 isn't doing that. I overrode the settings and forced 333MHz and now it's stable. Weird fault. Trying, but lack of bulk re-scanning functionality makes this difficult. :( I don't want to trash my whole database because it contains last-played data though. This is actually a big annoyance as I move files around in my collection using other programs. Or I retag. But rhythmbox doesn't notice these changes. If I re-import I get files in their new locations, but their old locations are still in the db; I don't see a way to remove entries for deleted files automatically. Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: gpredict (and other hamlib-using packages) has been queued for binNMUs on all architectures. Fixed packages should be available in unstable soon, with no further action required from the maintainer to resolve this bug. I was planning to wait for the next hamlib to do anything because the package has been renamed again. Upstream's library filename is libhamlib-1.2.4.so.2.0.3, in the case of hamlib3. The API is compatible between versions but they keep changing the library filename unnecessarily. That's recently been fixed. Our hamlib4 contains libhamlib.so.2.0.4 (Joop pulled in the filename fix early, to remove the -1.2.4), meaning no more mass rebuilds in the future. However the package name still doesn't match the library version (not such a big deal). So, Joop is intending to change the name one last time to libhamlib2. Details are at http://lists.debian.org/debian-hams/2006/03/msg00012.html ; looks like it hasn't been uploaded yet though. So another round on binNMUs will be needed at that stage. Grrr, that's bad. I'll see if I can fix it soon. It works correctly in 3.01 which is in testing and unstable. If you can upgrade you will find this is already fixed. I will try if I can backport the Etch packages to Sarge. Do you know if anybody has tried that before? Unfortunately, there are no xpdf packages at backports.org. I just tried it here and it built fine. I can publish the debs if you want them, though it's simple to build them yourself. I've got another beta for you at http://toadstool.se/dist/geotoad/ The biggest change is how we're assembling the Windows executables. Please test on a Windows machine if you have it handy. The windows download is a lot larger now and will open much slower, but hopefully be more reliable under Windows 2000. I've switched from compiling executables with exerb and ruby 1.8.2 to using RubyScript2Exe with ruby 1.8.4. Here are the other changes: * If no caches are found in the TUI (text user interface), don't exit * Update the software listing in the FAQ * Do better at finding fun_scores.dat, and handle the loss if we cannot find it. Bug reported by Jason Beaird. * Rebuild Windows .exe to avoid timeout.rb deadlock. Bug reported by John Hooey. * You can now enable verbose (debugging) mode from the text user interface by pressing v. * fix single-comment-in-GPX bug (and most likely others) reported by Medcin Medcin * fix --output relative path bug * display outputDir, not pwd in the TUI directory prompt I plan to release geotoad 3.9.0 tonight if no major issues are found. When was this change made to suspend2? The code might want to try using /proc/software_suspend if /proc/suspend2 doesn't exist, in order to support older versions of suspend2 (unless this change was ancient). Good idea. It looks like it changed in 2.2-rc8; 2.2 was just released last night. I've attached a new patch although I haven't actually tested the revision yet (but it is trivial). Also, if you've tested it, I'd appreciate if your patch would remove the # XXX: untested! comment I had to write. ;-) Good point :-) One issue is that it can't work out where to resume from itself; this has to come as a resume2= parameter or hard-coded in the kernel. Bug#350235: ide pcmcia problem
Hi Marco, It looks like this thread discusses my problem: http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/11/4/287 However z20_persistent.rules seems to contain the relevant magic already...? It does seem like there was a change in the kernel recently that may be relevant. It should have been a fix though rather than breaking things. But maybe the recent changes in sysfs processing in udev broke the rule. First, try removing the symlink to persistent.rules to verify that it actually is what is exposing the bug, then after you succesfully loaded the driver check with something like: udevinfo -a -p /block/hde/hde1 why it's not working. I will try this. My email access is going to be limited in the next few days while I am travelling. (Especially access where I can connect my own machine.) A workaround may be to add again this rule: BUS==ide, SYSFS{../removable}==1, DRIVER!=ide-cdrom, GOTO=no_volume_id I tried this already (it was in the post I linked to) and didn't see any effect, but I'll double check. thanks, Hamish -- Hamish Moffatt VK3SB [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
