Package: lazarus Version: 0.9.24-0-12 Severity: wishlist Thanks Please have a look at the lintian warnings at [1]: * dh-make-template-in-source and debian-files-list-in-source I filed this bug upstream at [2] some time ago. * out-of-date-standards-version and patch-system-but-direct-changes-in-diff + If I am correct using the patch system to convey all the changes should allow to bump the standards version. + If I understand correctly having configure in the dependencies of the clean rule in debian/rules makes the diff.gz file contain a lot of generated (and thus unnecessary) changes in the Makefiles. + A README.source should be added to explain the use of the patch system. Bug#481606: Questions about MiKTeX package manager for Debian
Hello Norbert, Just back from the mountains myself. Norbert Preining wrote: Hi Paul, quick reply, I am half a day off the mountains, On Di, 15 Jul 2008, Paul Gevers wrote: I am currently working on packaging the MiKTeX-tools for Debian, which consists mainly of a LaTeX package manager. (I hope you know the tools.) No idea what these tools are. MikTeX is Windows specific AFAIR, and I have no idea what they are doing. The main tool from MiKTeX that also works under Linux is meant to install/update/uninstall LaTeX packages from a MiKTeX repository. An additional tool lets you create MiKTeX packages from local LaTeX packages (not relevant for most people I guess). A third tool shows information about the package. The rest are aids to these tools. By the way, how do you feel about such a LaTeX package manager for Debian? Do you think it might be useful? Or does TeXlive include a I would say that it is *MAYBE* a good idea, but I guess the problem is that - where to put the updated packages? you don't want to overwrite files installed by the dpkg package manager that way, or your system will be messed yompletely. And we will NOT accept *any* bug reports anymore since we cannot guarantee that we can reproduce that ;-) - where to put new packages - how to work across updates of TeX Live, where suddenly files in TEXMFLOCAL are older than the ones in TEXMFMAIN/texmf-texlive? Honestly, I don't see a big advantage, since the package manager just circumvents the Debian packaging structure, which is *bad* by definition. manager which does the same thing? I read somewhere that TeXlive is also (partly) based on MiKTeX. No, definitely not. We use scripts developed by TE for teTeX, and Miktex maybe also uses these scripts, other than that there is no interaction. Pity for that, but it is not on our (upstream TeX Live) side, since we proposed to have a common packaging structure. But the developer of MikTeX is not interested in cooperating with TeX Live. So please first explain what these magic tools should do? BTW; TL 2008 will have the TeX Live Manager (tlmgr), inlcuding a Perl/Tk interface, for managing, updaing etc. No idea how I will integrate that one with Debian, enough to do to program itself (what is also my job). So I guess that the functionality of the TeX Live Manager will be quite like the functionality of the MiKTeX manager, only the TeX Live one is integrated into a complete TeX environment. Which gives me the feeling that getting the MiKTeX-tools into Debian will hardly be worth the effort, aside from the problems you mention above, which I have not yet solved in any way. Bug#481606: ITP: miktex-tools -- package manager for TeX
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Paul Gevers As my first contribution to Debian I intend to package the MiKTeX tools from Christian Schenks MiKTeX project. * Package name : miktex-tools Version : 2.7.2960 Upstream Author : Christian Schenk * URL : http://miktex.org/unx * License : GNU General Public Licence, Other/Proprietary License Programming Lang : C++ Description : MPM (MiKTeX Package Manager) is a command-line program used to install TeX packages from a web-based MiKTeX package repository. MPM was originally intended to be a tool for MiKTeX users. But the program can be helpful for users of other TeX systems too, because many of the MiKTeX packages are system-independent. Several additional utility programs are also included: * initexmf is used to configure MiKTeX. * md5walk is used to calculate the fingerprint of a package. * mpc (MiKTeX Package Creator) is used to maintain the contents of a custom package repository. * mthelp is a utility to lookup TeX package documentation. Information about MiKTeX tools can be found at http://miktex.org/unx/. This package is quite large and unfortunately also involves libraries, but I believe that I nearly coped with that. I do have some issue figuring out how the License should read. The text in the project itself says: Copying conditions for MiKTeX To the best of my knowledge, all software in this distribution is freely redistributable (libre, that is, not necessarily gratis), within the Free Software Foundation's definition and Debian Free Software Guidelines. If you find any non-free files included, please contact me. That said, MiKTeX has neither a single copyright holder nor a single license covering its entire contents, since it is a collection of many disparate packages. Therefore, you may copy, modify, and/or redistribute software from MiKTeX only if you comply with the requirements placed thereon by the owners of the respective packages. To most easily learn these requirements, I suggest checking the TeX Catalogue at: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/catalogue.html (or any CTAN mirror). The Catalogue is also included in MiKTeX in doc/html/catalogue/, but the online version will have updates. Of course the legal statements within the packages themselves are the final authority. Should I really check every single file in the project for Debian? Bug#481606: Status update on Bug#481606: ITP: miktex-tools -- package manager for TeX
As a matter of fact, I have. I have asked the mail list about advice on the libraries [1][2] with some off-list communication. As a result of those responses I decided to first get some experience with packaging by packaging something smaller (and without libraries). I recently finished that so I am back to miktex-tools. I got some of the libraries that are in Debian to work with the software, while others seem to be adapted to the project. I am still working on this. I will see if I can upload a preliminary package (which is not at all done yet) this weekend. Asking Texlive maintainers is a good idea (I will do this). Unfortunately nothing I can see has happened since (am I missing something?) Could you let me know if you intend to fix several lesstif2 issues (maybe using the debdiff attached to bug 522157 [1])? I would appreciate it as I put quite some time into it and it would help me motivate for the upcoming issues. (I don't want to sound whining thou). Bug#506977: FPC: copyright infringement in pre 2.2.2 sources
Package: fpc Version: 2.2.0-dfsg1-9 Version: 2.0.0-4 Severity: serious Thanks As can be read in the changelog of the latest version the old source of fpc has a copyright infringment: - Possible CodeGear Copyright infringements in the source were reworked using cleanroom approach. Following the full discussion for the same issue in Ubuntu (discussed in LP bug 275688 [1]) it looks like upstream is now positive of the infringement. Upstream removed all old releases from their servers. Debian should probably seek for a similar solution or relicense (although the latter solution is said in [1] that it should probably never be mentioned) I know it is late for Lenny, but I think we should look into this ASAP. I will point debian-legal to this bug as well. Paul [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fpc/+bug/275688 signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#506977: FPC: copyright infringement in pre 2.2.2 sources
Hi debian-legal (please keep bug cc on reply) I just filed the bug below about a copyright infringement in the fpc source from before version 2.2.2 (that is everything except unstable). I am also following and trying to help on the Ubuntu bug which discusses the same problem [1]. Could you help by explaining what needs to be done (if anything) with the current old-stable, stable and testing sources? It looks like we should take this seriously, but I fear this is slightly above my head. Especially the fact that upstream removed all the old releases from their website seems to mark that they took it very seriously. Bug#506977: bug 506977 ( ubuntu 275688)
Dear FTP-masters, Please have a look at bug 506977 (of which the last and most explaining comment is below this email). The issue involved is a copyright infringement in the source of fpc before version 2.2.2 (i.e. everything version except for the one in unstable). I fear that we should either update or remove the sources of fpc on all but unstable releases. In Ubuntu I checked that the following packages builddepend on FPC: lazarus imapcopy hedgewars libhdate gearhead m-tx python-soappy poker-network I assume, but have not check yet, that the same goes for Debian. With kind regards, Paul Marco van de Voort wrote: Hello, Note: I'm the FPC core developer that also features in the Ubuntu correspondence. Carlos (the maintainer of this port) can confirm that, or have a look here: http://www.freepascal.org/aboutus.var The probable infringement was brought to our attention in early 2007. The infringement was made amenable mostly due to trivial means (variable names, fairly small procedures that were the same). The other side was really cooperative, and gave us time to clean up massively, without having to immediately pull all sources, and we employed at tool to identify potential problem sources, and found a lot more. So we cut real wide, and reengineered all potentially infringing code. (all in all a nontrivial amount). However because the infringement was so trivial, and relicensing counterproductive and confusion, it was decided to pull all releases. So in august, after 2.2.2 came out, we removed all older releases from our site, and assumed the mentioning of the copyright problems in our release manifest would be enough to warrant a swift upgrade. I hope it need no explanation that that was a pretty painful step, removing 10 years of history of our project. However, here we are now, 3-4 months after the release and the heads up, and the infringing code is still served from Debian servers. We are not happy with this. Note that it is also not fair to the other party who has been patient, and now could see the code still floating around. In short: please remove the old versions as soon as possible, or upgrade. Marco. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Looks like quite a lot of packages seem to have go. The removal request looks reasonable to me :( Yesterday I found out that python-soappy and poker-network do NOT build depend on fpc. That was a mistake because reverse-build-depends fpc gives more output than only fpc (i.e. it reverse build depend on python-fpconst) Paul signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

If I look at your screenshot, I see the line with the filename and filesize, which is not present in my out-of-the-box nedit. How did you get that to appear? In other words, I can not reproduce your problem yet, and suspect that it MIGHT be related to personal settings. In order to find out, it might be useful to either tell what your personal settings are, or try and (temporarily) disable them and see if the problem persist. This could help us identify where the problem really is. Paul signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#308635: Yes, the bug is still there (Jan 2010)
[No need to e-mail explicit to me, I receive the bug-reports anyway.] The problem is reproducible without this statistics line. Just open nedit, and use file-new to generate a couple of tabs. Then change between the tabs several times; each time you change tabs, the bar consumes more space. For the record, the statistics line can be activated from Preferences - Statistics line I can indeed get the statistics line now as well, thanks. Unfortunately, for me the problem is still not reproducible. So we need to dig into the difference between your setup and mine. First, could you start nedit AFTER you temporarily renamed your ~/.nedit/nedit.rc file to something else? If this solves the problem, could you attach that file to the bug report. If it does not solve the problem could you for completeness give the output of
dpkg -l nedit lesstif2 libc6 libx11-6 libxt6
Don't forget to rename the file back to nedit.rc after you're done. How do you start nedit? How do you switch tabs? Just to be sure, does the problem exist if you start with
LC_ALL=C nedit
Paul signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#511505: winff does not run at all
Just for the record, via IRC (#debian-bugs) I had somebody with a powerpc test winff and he got the following result. So I think it has to do with the architecture. One remark (I don't know how to test this without uploading a new version): I didn't include the ${misc:Depends} in the Depends field because it didn't include any new dependencies on my system. But maybe it needs that when building for powerpc... It would be great if somebody with a ppc could build winff from source including the ${misc:Depends} and confirm that the depends are different from the original package. Hello all, Probably a stupid question, but anyway, I have a question regarding mime support. In my package I use the icon-generic field, but this field has only be included in shared-mime-info version 0.40. Hi Tomáš Please run apt-get source winff in a directory where you want to have the source. Then, in that directory, change debian/control to include ${misc:Depends} in the depends line, i.e. it should read: Depends: ffmpeg, xterm | x-terminal-emulator, ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends} Now, make sure you have installed: debhelper, lazarus-ide, fpc and fakeroot Then run fakeroot debian/rules binary, and you should find a binary (winff_xxx.deb file) in the directory below to install. It's now been over two years since the last response from the former maintainer (?), and the bug is still present in Lenny. What does the time line look like for a fix? Upstream is (slowly) working on a maintainer release. I am adopting nedit and have a beta of the new upstream release present for review on mentors.debian.net. Bug#510157: winff: Can't run ffmpeg
tags 510157 + wontfix It seems that you are running a version of ffmpeg from experimental, or self-compiled, please read the /usr/share/doc/winff/README.Debian file. The current version of the presets in winff *should* work with the unstable version of ffmpeg. More specifically, the presets supplied are compatible with libavcodec version 51. I will update winff when an updated version of ffmpeg enters unstable. As winff is still usable with other versions of ffmpeg after minor user intervention I do not consider this bug severe. A fix for this copy/paste bug was probably included in the previous upload of lesstif (version 1:0.95.0-2.3). Bug#536068: [nedit] Nedit does not support some accented characters in tabs
NEdit doesn't support two-keys accented characters (such as ê, ï, â, etc.) in any tab except the first one. - In the first tab all is OK, every French accented characters are supported: é, è, ê, à, â, î, ï. - In any extra tab, the following accented characters can not be typed: ê, â, î, ï. More precisely it concerns any characters that uses ^ or ¨. Note that they can still be paste... but not typed. Confirmed, this depends however on your locale. In Dutch it is even worse, because more characters need a two-key, but then again, less words need accents. Not sure what you got, but I just got the letter without the accent. I will investigate if this is an upstream bug, or a bug in the lesstif2 library. I couldn't find any explanation to this crash in the logs. I've purged my configuration, re-installed it from scratch and never managed to reproduce it. If it still happens, maybe I can provide you an executable with debug symbols so you can give a usable call-trace. I think you have fixed this problem with the upload of 0.9.28.2-10. It was exactly access violations that were fixed there. I have seen several packages that had the access violations removed after a rebuild against the latest version of fpc an lazarus. @ Michael, can you test the latest version of lazarus : 0.9.28.2-10? @ Abou, creating a debugging package would be great. Bug#595292: mounting cdrom by ordinary program
Hi all, With upstream of daisy-player (ITP: #595292) I am working on getting a Daisy player for Daisy talking books into good shape. I am having concerns about the current hack of upstream to ensure the program is able to read from a cd. The upstream source contains one udev rule to create a daisy-player link to the cdrom device and in the run parameter it adds a line to /etc/fstab allowing everybody to mount the cdrom. When daisy-player is run without options, it tries to mount the device and plays from it. I don't believe this is the way to do it, but I have not found yet what is appropriate in this case. I would appreciate some hints to what to do to obtain the desired effect, i.e. that the program can automatically read from cdrom if present. /lib/udev/rules.d/daisy-player-rules ENV{ID_CDROM}==1, GROUP=cdrom, \ MODE=0444, SYMLINK+=daisy-player, RUN=daisy-player.sh /lib/udev/daisy-player.sh #!/bin/sh mkdir -p /media/daisy-player grep daisy-player /etc/fstab || echo /dev/daisy-player /media/daisy-player auto noauto, users,ro /etc/fstab Thanks in advance, Paul signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#595292: ITP: daisy-player -- player for Daisy talking books (DTB)
I have an Ubuntu package in progress in my Launchpad PPA: https://launchpad.net/~paul-climbing/+archive/daisy Paul signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#595292: progress report
Upstream is now using udisks to mount the cd-rom in his version 5.0. Because he wants to use madplay options -s, -t, and -o, he is currently building his own madplay, which of course is unacceptable for Debian. I am discussing the possibilities with him. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#595292: update on packaging
Upstream created a new version of daisy-player, version 5.2, which moved away from udev, and uses udisks. Upstream does not compile it's own version of madplay anymore, so that issue is solved. I updated my packaging in my ppa and in the GIT repository. I will have some people test the package and I will update this bug with the next status. Bug#603161: faulty window clipping in nedit - other programs affected as well
I tried a couple of more programs (ones which I normally do not use), and I found that there are several other programs besides nedit that have the same problem, for instance xpaint (2.9.1.4-1), xfig (1:3.2.5.b-1+b1) and xmgrace (1:5.1.22-8), and the problem occurs (mainly) at the sliders at the left and the bottom of the window. I guess that the programs which are affected use the same library for drawing window content. Than it is probably caused by lesstif. Assuming all these programs depend on it. If you don't look yourself, I will look into the dependency, but unfortunately, lesstif bugs are hard to get fixed because interest of programmers is low (and the code is difficult).
